MLB public betting, line movement September 5
        Patrick Everson

Trevor Story and the Rockies face the daunting task of trying to solve the red-hot Dodgers on Saturday night. The SuperBook at Westgate opened Los Angeles a -190 favorite.

MLB betting odds are on the board and taking money for a 17-game Saturday schedule, including a couple of doubleheaders. One of the day’s final games features unquestionably the majors’ best team, as the Los Angeles Dodgers play host to the Colorado Rockies.

The SuperBook at Westgate provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Saturday’s games.

        MLB line movement

The Dodgers are 30-10, playing .750 ball 40 games into this 60-game shortened regular season. Los Angeles is on a six-game win streak and is a ridiculous 19-3 over its last 22 outings. The SuperBook opened the Dodgers -190 and the Rockies +175, and there was no line movement by late Friday night for this 9:10 p.m. ET first pitch.

The Tampa Bay Rays (27-12) are almost as hot as the Dodgers, playing .692 ball overall while going a superb 21-4 in their last 25 games. Tampa Bay opened a solid -230 at home for Saturday’s 6:40 p.m. ET contest against the Miami Marlins (+205), and there was no line movement Friday night.

Max Fried is the unstoppable force for the Atlanta Braves, who have won all eight of his starts while he’s gone 6-0 with a stout 1.60 ERA. It’s no wonder the Braves opened -230 at The SuperBook against the visiting Washington Nationals (+205) for a 7:10 p.m. ET contest.

        MLB public betting

The Consensus indicates public bettors are firmly behind all three of the aforementioned Saturday favorites. As of late Friday night, the Dodgers were landing 71 percent of Consensus picks, the Rays were at 74 percent and the Braves 71 percent.

The Chicago White Sox were the most popular early Consensus play, drawing 84 percent of picks Friday night for a 7:05 p.m. ET road start against the Kansas City Royals.

NHL public betting, odds movement September 5
                  Patrick Everson

The Islanders and Flyers collide one more time Saturday, in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. DraftKings Sportsbook opened New York -122 and moved to -130 Friday.

NHL betting odds are part of a huge Saturday sports landscape, so of course the lone hockey game has to be a Game 7. The New York Islanders hope to avoid a playoff collapse when they tangle with the Philadelphia Flyers for a trip to the Eastern Conference finals

DraftKings Sportsbook provided insights on NHL opening odds and early odds movement, sharp money and public betting for Saturday's contest.

                  NHL odds movement

The resilient Flyers erased a 3-1 deficit in this best-of-7 series, winning the last two games in overtime, including a 5-4 double-OT victory in Game 6 Thursday. However, DraftKings opened the Islanders -122 late Thursday night, and New York’s odds stretched to -130 by Friday afternoon with Philadelphia a +113 underdog. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. ET.

                  NHL public betting

The Consensus, often indicative of public betting patterns, showed the Islanders getting the majority of early support. But it was hardly overwhelming support in a series with four one-goal games, three of which went to overtime. As of Friday night, New York was drawing 57 percent of Consensus picks.

My free play is in college football for Saturday, as I like the Arkansas State Red Wolves against the Memphis Tigers.

I know Memphis has been projected to finish near the top of the AAC, but with the climate of how things are going these days, there's no telling anything anymore. And with a chance to play football, I think we're going to see a wild shootout between highly explosive offensive units. This game might be decided by double digits, but I don't see Memphis winning by more than two touchdowns, let alone 20 points.

Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson has done a fantastic job with this program, leading the Red Wolves to six straight bowl appearances and at least eight victories in four out of the last five seasons. The Red Wolves enter the campaign with two proven arm under center in Logan Bonner and Layne Hatcher, which will help against a team like the Tigers.

Memphis has its offensive weapons intact, so matching the Tigers' intensity will be key.

I like Arkansas State to do that, with whomever Anderson decides to go with at quarterback. Bonner threw for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns prior to being injured. Hatcher took over for Bonner and ended up with 2,946 yards and 27 touchdowns. Running back Marcel Murray returns to anchor the running game after rumbling for 820 yards and six touchdowns, and most importantly, the Red Wolves have five starters back on the line.

Look for Arkansas State to hang tough and keep this one close to get the cover.

                            1* ARKANSAS STATE

After 3 comes 4, as in 4 games played in these Eastern Conference Semifinals and 4 games Under the total.

The Raptors somehow managed to win Game 3 on Thursday by a 104-103 score in a game that landed Under the total once again. That makes it 3-0 Under the total thus far in this Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Prior to their offensive "eruption", the Raptors had not managed to get to the 100 point mark in the previous 2 games contested.

For Toronto that makes it 5 of their last 6 this postseason Under the total and it also puts the Raptors on an overall Under run of 11 of 15 since arriving in Orlando. That 11-4 run does include one regular season meeting with Boston just before the playoffs started in the bubble.

The Celtics are on an even more pronounced Under run, as they have played each of their last 5 now and 8 of their last 9 overall Under the posted price.

If we are to include the regular season August meeting in Orlando against the Raptors that landed Under it is a 9-2 Under run now for Brad Stevens' team their last 11 times on the hardwood.

As for the series, the teams have been Under in 6 of the past 8 meetings.

Until I see evidence of a real offensive "eruption", I will look for another Under in this spot.

Celtics-Raptors Under the total in Game 4.

Saturday's comp play in baseball goes on the Yankees and the Orioles to land Under the total.

Both games of yesterday's doubleheader between the teams landed Over the total, as have all 4 series meetings this year between the division rivals.

Not only that, but each of the last 10 series meetings between the teams have also played Over the total.

That will not be the case tonight!

Gerrit Cole is only human, as evidenced by the fact he has lost his last pair of starts and has allowed 9 runs on 13 hits in his 10 innings pitched. My guess is Cole bounces-back in this spot and keeps the O's at bay.

Cole has already beaten the Orioles once this season back at the end of July as he is 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA in his 3 career starts against Baltimore.

Opposing hurler Keegan Akin will make his second career start. His first saw him allow a pair of unearned runs in his 4-plus innings worked.

This is a big total considering Cole could go out there tonight and fire a no-no.

Mark me down for the Under.
