MLB | Red Sox vs Blue Jays
Play on: Blue Jays -134 at pinnacle

These teams have split the first two games of the series. Toronto won 8-0 on Tuesday and Boston responded with a 7-3 win yesterday. I like the Jays, 11-6 off a loss, in this evening's series finale. The streaky Matz is off a gem last time out. He struck out nine through five shutout innings. Pivetta has been solid and he's done a good job of keeping the ball in the park. He's giving up a lot of fly balls though and I won't be surprised if the Jays take him deep, at least once, here. The Jays are 4-0 the past four times that they allowed five or more runs in their previous game. Consider Toronto.

MLB | Red Sox vs Blue Jays
Play on: Blue Jays -132 at linepros

My free play is on the Tor Blue Jays at 7:37 ET.
The Red Sox take on the Blue Jays Thursday night in the rubber match of a three-game series at Dunedin, Fl (Toronto's home away from home until the team shifts its home base to Buffalo, NY on June 1). The Blue jays won 8-0 on Tuesday with Boston rebounding to win 7-3 last night. The AL East seems headed for a VERY competitive year (except for Baltimore), as the other four teams are currently within 1 1/2 games of each other. Boston leads at 26-18, while Tampa Bay (winners of six straight) is one game back at 25-19. Toronto is 23-18 (.561) and in a virtual tie with 24-19 New York (.558), just 1 1/2-games back of Boston.
Taking the mound for tonight's contest will be Boston's Nick Pivetta (5-0, 3.16 ERA) and Toronto's Steven Matz (5-2, 4.29 ERA). Pivetta began his career with Philadelphia in 2017 and in his first three seasons, was 19-30 with a 5.34 ERA. Pivetta made just three appearances with Philadelphia during the start-delayed 2020 season (all in relief), pitching just 5.2 innings while allowing 10 ERs (15.88 ERA). He was traded to the Boston Red Sox on August 21 and made two starts for Boston, going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Pivetta earned a place in the rotation during spring training and has delivered "big time," going 5-0 with 3.16 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, while holding opponents to just a .189 BAA over eight starts (Boston is 7-1).
The Mets expected big things from Matz but he failed to deliver. He was just BRUTAL in 2020, making nine appearances (six starts) in going 0-5 with a 9.68 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, while opponents owned a .323 BAA. Matz was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays on January 27, 2021 and opened the current season 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA. However, his next three starts were pretty 'ugly.' He lasted just 13.2 innings while allowing 14 ERs for a 9.22 ERA. Matz looked MUCH better in his last outing, pitching five scoreless innings with nine Ks (no-decision).
Doing the math on Pivetta tells us he's 7-0 with a 2.91 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox (Boston is 9-1). That said, I'm still skeptical of a pitcher with a 5.50 ERA in four seasons while with the Phillies. Matz has surely been an underachiever but I'm backing Toronto in this rubber match. The Blue Jays are 10-6 at their temporary home in Florida and finish up their stay in Dunedin with this game and then a four-game series with the red-hot Rays (Friday through Monday), before Shufflin' off to Buffalo.
        Good luck...Larry

Both of the first two games in this series were slugfests, with neither team getting any fast break opportunities. Without the ability to get good looks at the net, we can see this game being another low scoring affair. These two teams know how to defend the opposition, and these are both excellent defensive teams.

NHL | Golden Knights vs Wild
Play on: Wild +101 at pinnacle

Thursday NHL Free play. My selection is on Minnesota over Vegas at 9:35 pm et on Thursday.
Nothing has come easy for the Knights here in Minnesota this season as they've dropped three of four meetings with their lone win coming by way of overtime. If the first two games of this series are any indication, nothing will come easy in this playoff series either. The Wild know they can skate with the Knights. After letting Vegas carry the play in the opener, Minnesota actually came back fairly strong in Game 2, outshooting the Knights 35-28 but ultimately falling by a 3-1 score with Vegas capitalizing on its opportunities and picking up a critical win to even the series. Now I look for the Wild to punch back on home ice, where they check in 21-7 on the season, averaging 3.6 goals per game and outscoring opponents by an average margin of 1.1 goals. Note that Minnesota has gone 15-5 after losing two of its last three games this season, as is the case here. The Wild are also 14-4 when playing at home revenging a loss by two goals or more over the last two seasons, allowing just 2.2 goals per game in that situation. This has the makings of a long, back-and-forth series and I look for the Wild to regain the upper hand on Thursday. Take Minnesota (8*).

Thursday free play on Sandy Alcantara and the Marlins as they take the rubber game in their 3 game set with the Phillies and Vince Velasquez.

The Phillies are in a bit of a funk with losses in 4 of their last 6 and while Velasquez has found a bit of a groove with just one run allowed in each of his past 3 starts, the righty is no better than 4-4 in his career against some bad Marlins team with an ERA of 4.88 that suggests he will give up more than a run in tonight's start.

Alcantara was just shown the showers in his earliest exit of the season in his last start which came against the Dodgers, but the righty has enjoyed tremendous success in his young career when throwing against Philadelphia as he is 4-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 6 career starts against the Phils.

The Marlins win in last night's contest puts them at 7-3 since last season over the last 10 meetings.

Mark me down for a play on the Marlins for Thursday.

My comp winner is the Boston Red Sox plus the money against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fact is, Nick Pivetta is a big reason the BoSox are sitting atop the American League East, as he's been Boston's best starting pitcher so far this season.

He's 5-0 on the year, and he's limited opponents to a bleak .189 batting average. Pivetta has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his eight starts, and it starts with his delivery. Of the 750 pitches he's thrown, 107 have been struck. Only 6 have been considered barrel shots - a slim 5.6%. Not familiar with that phrase? It's a a well-struck ball.

More than 50% of his pitches have been his 4-seam fastball, while he's utilized his slider, curve and change on a need-to-use basis.

I don't believe the Blue Jays will be able to solve Pivetta, who hasn't allowed more than three earned runs since his second start this season. Since April 17, the team is 5-1, he is 3-0, he has a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (31-to-15), opponents are hitting just .173 against him and have a paltry .264 slugging percentage. In that span, 65% of his pitches have been in the zone, while he's frozen hitters 17% of the time. He's also induced groundballs on 72% of the pitches that have been hit in those six games.

This line is off, and I'm going to play the Red Sox.
