Al Cimaglia: Scioto Downs Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 22, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, Scioto Downs has 13 races scheduled with the 0.50 Late Pick 4 beginning in Race 10. It's a competitive sequence and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 10

3-E R Truevalue (12-1)-Looking for a price and this 10-year-old has finished 2nd both times he has drawn inside. Drew the 8-hole and post 9 twice in the other 3 starts here. Could get away in the pocket behind #4 and if so might surprise at a big price.
4-Wegottatruckyea (8/5)-Claimed by Galliers on 5-18 for $7,500 and now drops in for a $6,000 tag. There isn't much gate speed in the field and this veteran should get the top without a problem and may not look back.

    Race 11

4-Atta Boy Chris (5/2)-Comes off a big try from post 8 and now makes the 3rd start at ScD, and this is the 3rd start on Lasix as well. Holiday should have this 3-year-old in play right from the word go.
7-Uncle Richard (12-1)-Raced from the rail in last and cashed a 3rd place check. Doesn't start quickly so that post draw didn't help much. Did race gamely to the wire in last and the price should be better tonight.
8-Velocity T Rock (7-1)-Raced evenly last week after breaking stride in the previous start. Did pace the 2nd half in .55 and it was an improved effort. Will look for the upswing to continue at a solid price.

    Race 12

3-Lucifers Legend A (3-1)-Morgan trainee takes a meaningful drop and gets needed post relief. Has the gate speed to be put in play early on and could get the top or drop in the pocket behind #5.
5-High On Paydaze (2-1)-Got on the point into a 53.2 opening half on 6-8, but faded and missed the top check by 1 length. This will be the 5th race on Lasix and showed improvement in the last start. if Jeremy Smith could rate the mile in a better fashion it might be picture time.

    Race 13

5-Northern Spy (3-1)-Makes the 2nd start for the Murphy barn and comes off a sharp try from post 9. The 0-19 record in 2021 is cause for pause but was facing better and fits with this crew.
7-Winna Winna (15-1)-Dropped to this level in last and almost made the most of drawing the rail but faded late to finish 3rd. Has the gate speed to get a good seat and is worth a swing at the morning line price.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    3,4/4,7,8/3,5/5,7
    Total Bet=$12

Monday Myths: Does the Summer Heat Take Its Toll?

      June 21, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk
Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

      Assumption:

Horses need more time to recover between starts during the heat of summer.

      Background:

The taxing nature of summer temperatures, and a horse population largely running on the diuretic Lasix, are believed to be reasons why it’s tougher to bounce back from an effort this time of year as we turn into the hot summer months.

      Data Points:

I dialed up the Betmix database to track return days of a very short nature (14 days or less), short nature (21-28 days), average nature (29-42 days) and extended nature (43-56 days). I looked at the performance of all horses nationally at all class levels in each of those return spans by each season on the calendar. For seasons, I used Jan-Feb-Mar as winter; Apr-May-June as spring; July-Aug-Sep as summer; Oct-Nov-Dec as fall. We looked at the past 4 years of data going back to the start of 2017 through 2020.

      Winter Return Days

Horses with very short return days (14 days or less) won 11.4% with a $0.74 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with short return days (21-28 days) won 13.3% with a $0.75 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with average return days (29-42 days) won 13.3% with a $0.71 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with extended return days (43-56 days) won 13.3% with a $0.74 ROI for every $1 bet.

      Spring Return Days

Horses with very short return days (14 days or less) won 12.4% with a $0.75 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with short return days (21-28 days) won 14.1% with a $0.76 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with average return days (29-42 days) won 14.5% with a $0.75 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with extended return days (43-56 days) won 14.5% with a $0.77 ROI for every $1 bet.

      Summer Return Days

Horses with very short return days (14 days or less) won 12.3% with a $0.70 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with short return days (21-28 days) won 14.1% with a $0.78 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with average return days (29-42 days) won 14.4% with a $0.76 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with extended return days (43-56 days) won 13.6% with a $0.70 ROI for every $1 bet.

      Fall Return Days

Horses with very short return days (14 days or less) won 11.6% with a $0.74 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with short return days (21-28 days) won 12.8% with a $0.78 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with average return days (29-42 days) won 13.2% with a $0.79 ROI for every $1 bet.

Horses with extended return days (43-56 days) won 13.0% with a $0.75 ROI for every $1 bet.

      Overall Findings:

Horses returning on the shortest layoffs (14 days or less) had the lowest win percentage in each of the four seasons. The difference in win percentages between short, average and extended returns were negligible in all four of the seasons, but slightly more pronounced in summer – where extended layoff horses fared .5% and .8% worse than those off short and average returns.

      Bottom line:

Nothing jumps off the page in terms of seasonal influence when it comes to the success or failure of horses returning from varying lengths of rest. Summer horses coming off the shortest layoff (14 days or less) performed as well or better than other seasons; the same goes for those off 21-28 days, and the 29-42 day breaks. The numbers do indicate that it’s a falsity to assume that a horse running back on short rest in the summer is statistically compromised.

      Additional Details:

You can go into Betmix and run your own queries for a deeper dive into this theory and any that you can create. For instance, which trainers do best at various levels of layoff and by season? The Betmix database shows Kelly Von Hemel (48%) and Dale Capuano (42%) are among the very best at summertime (July-August-September) returns from 14 days or fewer. You could sort this study by race class, distance or track to hone it in for the circuit and races you follow.

        #4
        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Parx Racing - Race #4
#1 Cajole Her form is hit or miss, but she has a couple of back tries that stack up nicely here, and she can play with these if she's ready to roll off the bench.
#8 Ninetypercentbrynn She has the form to be tough, but she has only been a serious win threat in one of her lifetime races and may be overbet again today with this group.
#5 Sky Queen She was favored off the bench for that comeback in which she went evenly, but she has some room to come forward in this second start off the bench while moving around two turns.
Race Summary Cajole will need to fire fresh to land this one, but some of the main players in here don't inspire a ton of confidence, and this filly might offer a fair enough price while trying two turns again.
        Parx Racing - Race #7
#6 Like a Saltshaker Two turns off the bench will always be an ask, but this guy's only career turf try nearly produced an open stakes score at Belmont last fall, and that kind of form would make him tough with the likely chalk here.
#8 Beren He has never tried turf or been two turns, so there are at least some principled reasons to try and beat him. Some bad weather in the forecast offers a chance this gets run on the main where he would be very tough.
#4 Pylon He's probably going to have some company near the top, but he has a little bit of intrigue while trying the turf for the first time. Talent is there to be competitive if he likes the new footing.
Race Summary Like a Saltshaker showed he could be competitive with turf stakes company last year, and he can probably find a pretty great trip from close range in a spot with a couple of confirmed speed types.
        Parx Racing - Race #9
#11 Cartouche She has some pretty good sprint form and a couple of decent back turf races, so this one-turn turf try might be right up her alley. Thinking she'll find a pretty good spot near the top at a playable price.
#8 Caravel She looks like the one to beat after the nice stake score at Pimlico, and she has never been beaten in three starts at the trip. Geroux in town to ride back.
#12 Jakarta Speed has been in the mix early with some tough groups, but she's pretty one-dimensional and might have to work too hard for things from the outside.
Race Summary Cartouche should offer a playable price while trying a turf sprint for the first time, and she handled the footing fine in the past when going long. This trip may suit.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Pocono Downs - Race #1
#3 SWEETONTHEBEACH Overhauled by sharp foe, can carry speed farther in here.
#6 EXTRILLA HANOVER Sustained rally to defeat the odds-on fave at Harrah's Philly.
#4 MORROCKIN K Romped from post 8, takes class hike, Napolitano's choice.
Race Summary Sweetonthebeach set the pace and shrugged off a challenge by Delightful Summer before a pair of sharp favorites passed by. She can maximize his speed in here at a tempting 9-2 on the morning line. Play a 3/4,6/ALL trifecta.
          Running Aces - Race #4
#6 SIN MACHQUEEN Class drop the answer for consistent 10yo, today's Best Bet.
#5 EXPLAINNOTCOMPLAIN First-over in last three starts, gets driver upgrade.
#4 DREAM CHASIN Set pace to stretch two back, rallied to just miss in latest.
Race Summary Sin Machqueen plays to a steady beat and gets the necessary class relief to rally for his 30th lifetime victory. Let's make him today's Best Bet.
          Scioto Downs - Race #5
#4 HAWK'S RED CHIEF Solid return run, looks to get back on the winning track.
#2 BELIEVEINYOURMACH Second in last pair, claimed, but 3-52 since 2020.
#5 ILOVEMYWOODY Needs some pace flow, can rally for minor awards.
Race Summary Hawk's Red Chief, a seven-time winner last year, raced close-up to the stretch in his seasonal debut before the deep closers arrived to get the money. He figures tough with a move forward today. Play 4-2 and 4-5 exactas.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #3
#1 Jungle Fighter Comes in off a win and was claimed in his last at Tampa Bay, where the turf racing is actually pretty solid. Can bring a lot of late heat in this one for his first for the Aldana Gonzalez stable.
#3 Lontani Ran a decent fourth in his first local start of the year and has done some good over this course in past seasons; can be closer to the pace than usual.
#6 Ego Was up in time for a similar price last time and moves his act over to the turf.
Race Summary Jungle Fighter ran in some very good races earlier this year and should be very competitive for this price.
            Indiana Grand - Race #6
#5 Jackson Gold Broke his maiden two back, had a lead vs. similar and settled for third going longer last time; turns back in distance and can get going earlier vs. these.
#2 Smokin Richie Set the pace and finished second in a race that came off the turf; big pace player today as well.
#4 Highest Praise Should speed vs. claimers last out and moves over to the turf; could be in the mix throughout.
Race Summary Jackson Gold can stalk a fast pace and can make his move when asked; one to hold off.
            Indiana Grand - Race #9
#1 Blueridge Mountain Was third in a three-horse photo here last time and runs without blinkers today; has been in the hunt in every one of his races for Amoss, who claimed since seven races ago in February.
#4 Rare Form Prefers to be on the front end and will run hard to get there; makes his first off the claim for Garcia.
#6 I Will Stand Pressed throughout and missed by a nose vs. similar; is in good form and could improve in his second on the track this season.
Race Summary Blueridge Mountain can be in the hunt for every bit of this one and will dig in when challenge; very game.
