Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 7/1/21

    July 1, 2021
Every Thursday through Sunday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

    *

Gulfstream Park Race 3 – Post time: 1:54 ET
    3-My Sassenach (8-1)

A pair fillies by the good regional stallion Uncaptured top the field in this Florida-bred maiden juvenile sprint at five one-half furlongs. Lara’s Lady will be trying to make amends for her no-excuse runner-up at 50 cents on the dollar in her debut last month after displaying good quickness to take control early but then being worn down late while more than four lengths clear of the rest. From a barn that has excellent stats (25%) with second time starters, she’s very likely to clear the field from her rail draw but today must negotiate an extra furlong and might prove vulnerable again in the closing stages and she may not offer much value at even money on the morning line My Sassenach impressed in a :10 1/5 breeze prior to the April OBS Sale and then sold for $152,000 through the ring, so she’s clearly well-regarded. Low profile connections should ensure a square price (she's 8-1 on the morning line), so let’s put D. Braddy-trained filly her on top as a win play and then for protection hook her up in a solid exacta box with the speedy Lara’s Lady.
    *
    *
Belmont Park Race 5 - Post time: 3:02 ET
    5-Sweet Sugar Baby (12-1)

This maiden juvenile dash for New York-bred fillies should boil down to the two daughters of Mission Impossible drawn side-by-side outside in this six runner event. Sweet Sugar Baby, a $40,000 OBS March sale purchase after a strong :10 1/5 breeze during the preview session, vans down from Finger Lakes after a series of steady but unspectacular workouts that should have her fit enough for a major effort first crack out of the box at a juicy 12-1 on the morning line. Clearly, she won’t have to be a world beater to act with this group, her main contention coming from the second-time starting Parx shipper Darn That Song, off slowly before finishing a respectable third in a hot race just eight days ago. She’ll have no excuses from her cozy outside draw. We’ll use both in an exacta box and then press in the win pool with the much higher priced Sweet Sugar Baby on top.
    *
    *
Ellis Park Race 6 – Post time: 2:42 CT
    3-Costa Terra (9/2)

By the highly-promising freshman sire Gun Runner from the dam of the good Stakes winner Pneumatic, Costa Terra debuts in this five furlong dash for juveniles and looks to have found a proper spot to win at first asking. A couple of sharp gate workouts in May at Keeneland catch the eye, and in a field in which the known element doesn’t impress the S. Asmussen-trained colt appears cranked up for a major effort. He’s 9/2 on the morning line and at anywhere near that price he’ll offer good wagering value in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.
    *
    *
Woodbine Race 7 – Post time: 4:24 ET
    2-March to the Arch (9/5)

Primarily a high-class grass performer throughout his 25-race career but highly-capable over the local synthetic surface as well, March to the Arch faces what appears to be a stiff task in his first outing since finishing unplaced in the Breeders’ Cup Mile last November in this year’s edition of the 8.5 furlong Dominion Day S.-G3. A deep closer that generally requires help up front to have his best chance, the M. Casse-trained gelding will need to be fit and ready in a race that projects to be slowly-run early. However, the local work tab is sharp and steady, so with a distinct class edge and a history off firing huge off a layoff we’re expecting the son of Arch to overcome an unfavorable race flow and make him a strong play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

AI Picks: Woodbine's Dominion Day | Thursday, July 1

      June 30, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk
A special Thursday, July card at Woodbine celebrates that nation’s Canada Day festivities. Woodbine will offer an 8-race program beginning at 1:20 pm ET. The feature event is Race 7, the $150,000 Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes.
The 1/ST BET app looks at 52 handicapping factors and more than 200,000 past races to determine its AI selections. You can use the automated handicapping factors, or create your own factor filters to incorporate angles you prefer.

We’ve included the official track morning line odds with the Woodbine picks for the holiday stakes. Full selections can be found in the 1/ST BET app, where you can bet Woodbine racing and dozens of tracks worldwide.

      //

      Woodbine // Race 7 // 4:24 pm ET // Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes // 1-1/16 miles

      #2 March to the Arch (9-5 ML) // 27%W // 47%P // 66%S

      #4 Mighty Heart (5-2 ML) // 19%W // 39%P // 54%S

      #6 Belichick (6-1 ML) // 14%W // 29%P // 47%S

      #7 Skywire (4-1 ML) // 14%W // 26%P // 38%S

      #1 Lookin to Strike (10-1 ML) // 11%W // 27%P // 43%S

      #3 Atone (20-1 ML) // 9%W // 18%P // 30%S

      #5 Malibu Mambo (12-1 ML) // 6%W // 15%P // 23%S

Notes: Trainer Mark Casse sends out 3 of the 7 entrants (Lookin to Strike, March to the Arch and Skywire), including the morning line favorite and 1/ST BET AI top win projection. March to the Arch makes his first start since last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile and was runner-up in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on the local turf a year ago; he’ll transition to the Tapeta for the comeback race. Reigning Queen’s Plate winner Mighty Heart was a race short of Triple Crown glory last year, but accounted for himself nicely in open company last time out at Churchill Downs in the Blame Stakes. He’ll rematch with last year’s Queen’s Plate runner-up Belichick.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Woodbine - Race #6
#11 Moonlit Silence Draws well to spy the splits like she did last time out, and she has the pedigree to suggest she'll be able to handle the move to the turf while moving around two turns.
#4 Using Coconuts She gets Lasix off the nose miss in the debut at this level, but she's adding ground while trying turf for the first time off the bench. She can win this, but there are principled reasons to stand against.
#5 Jungle Goddess She'll have to fire fresh at the longest trip of her short career, but the move back to the turf should serve her well after a dull chase-and-fade main track try here to close out her 2yo campaign.
Race Summary Moonlit Silence looks like she might land a really great trip while in touch, and she has some room to move forward in this second start off the bench with some trip/surface upside here.
        Woodbine - Race #7
#4 Mighty Heart Looks like he should be able to control the pace, and we know this Queens Plate winner can handle a two-turn trip on the main here. Tactical edge on the likely chalk.
#2 March to the Arch He's the clear one to beat as he kicks off his 6yo campaign over a surface on which he has a win and a second from two career tries, and he has a big class edge on most of these while coming down out of the Breeders' Cup Mile.
#6 Belichick He just missed in that comeback run at Churchill, and he has run pretty well over the local footing in the past. Chance, but think one of the top two will get home today.
Race Summary Mighty Heart and March to the Arch should be tough to get past, and while 'Arch is classier, Heart has a big tactical edge on him and doesn't meet a ton of other pace to deal with in this spot. Price should be better, too.
        Woodbine - Race #8
#7 Pocket I'll take a big swing with the 0-fer barn running this one off the layoff, but she returns off the layoff with a mostly regular worktab. The barn has gone 2-for-5 with this type of MCL turf route horse here the last two years, with winners at $22 and $58, so I'm going to hope the addition of blinkers coupled with the new trip wakes her up at a big number.
#8 Candy's Dream She has had 13 chances, but nearly all of them came in MSW company, and she ran okay on the main with better in her first try with MCL company. Tough if ready.
#11 Rosa's Soul Would definitely want this one on the multi-race plays with some upside in this second start off the layoff, and her only career turf try produced one of her best lifetime efforts. The move around two turns probably won't hurt.
Race Summary Taking a shot with Pocket for a barn that has not won a race since 2019, but they don't start many horses and have been a 15% turf operation the last couple of years, including a couple of longshot winners with this exact kind of company.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#3 MIDNIGHT MIRACLE Improved second start as a 3yo, moves outside in.
#6 HP MAMA B Tactical speed, loves to win, top connections.
#4 HAWAII Trotted evenly in pair of comeback tries, can't be discounted.
Race Summary Midnight Miracle cleared to the lead from post 9 before the first turn, yielded to the favorites, then re-rallied first-over in the third quarter to finish a clear second. She gets the call in Ontario Sire Stakes in her third start this year.
          Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #2
#8 I'M DONE TALKING Better than latest appears, can overcome impost.
#3 ROCKIN ZENDAYA Awakened at Pocono, passed the favorite for second.
#4 RODDYS AT IT AGAIN Best numbers, seeks repeat since arrival from Harrington.
Race Summary I'm Done Talking sat a pocket trip, overpowered the favorite in the lane and was wrapped up late under strong handling. She is today's Best Bet despite a negative post switch.
          The Meadows - Race #7
#3 WATCH N SEE Won in second start locally, can make good use of his speed in here.
#1 CAPTAIN FIREBALL Held off cavalry charge for second while no match for longshot runaway.
#10 REBEL DEVIL Hit board in 9 of 21 this year despite being plagued by bad posts.
Race Summary Watch N See steps up off an easy victory and holds a tactical advantage in a field that lacks speed. He's worth a play at 5-1 on the morning line. Play a 3-1-ALL trifecta.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#6 Robintakincharge Has outstanding speed and once in front, he can be very difficult to catch; well spotted here.
#2 Resident Is a main track only entrant and has the speed to dictate; very tough if this race is pulled from the turf.
#8 Joe Benjamin Crushed maidens last time in his 14th attempt; can be in the mix from the start and looks game enough to dig in for a piece.
Race Summary Robintakincharge is a strong threat on the front end and can be competitive at this level.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #6
#1 Little Bit Good Ran on for third last time and was a winner threat back. Can save some ground this time and she has the kick to be a legit danger.
#8 Isadorable Aida Was second in his first off the claim by Carlos David and can move up in his second for the barn.
#2 Princess Betty Is a main track only runner and has been in tougher races; solid choice if this comes off the turf.
Race Summary Little Bit Good gets a good pace in front of her today and can mount a big rally to win it.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #7
#4 Sheza Happy Girl Has been in some tough sprints lately and could appreciate the additional ground of this one.
#5 Siren's Lucky Song Was a maiden winner two back and has been a big player in all five starts; can mix it up from the beginning.
#1 Miss Mikaela Romped vs. maidens last out and has been fairly close in all six starts; should be able to stretch out.
Race Summary Sheza Happy Girl has been with some tough runners and has the class to battle it out; has a good chance at the distance.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2 - Post: 12:44pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $15,600 Class Rating: 64

                  Rating:

                  #5 SASSY CAT (ML=3/1)

SASSY CAT - This horse obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has registered the highest speed fig on the turf at the distance-surface. Ran in the last race against better company at Gulfstream Park. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit her well. Just check out her last speed figure, 64. That one looks good in this field.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 VIVI'S DREAM'S (ML=4/1), #4 GOLDA BISCUIT (ML=6/1), #7 COMMANDER GRACE (ML=8/1),

VIVI'S DREAM'S - That was simply not a very good showing in the last affair. Doubtful for this participant to do much running with no success lately in a short distance event. GOLDA BISCUIT - While Equibase's speed ratings are strong, I would forget about the high one from the May 15th on the soft turf. Some horses just run well on the off going. When looking at today's class rating, she will have to earn a much better speed figure than in the last race to compete in this turf sprint. COMMANDER GRACE - Last performed on January 30th at Gulfstream Park, finishing seventh. Not likely to perk up off of that outing in today's event. Garnered a mediocre speed rating last time out in a $16,000 Maiden Claiming race on January 30th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that rating.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - SASSY CAT - Her TrackMaster turf figure is tops among these horses. This filly deserves your wager.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 SASSY CAT to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

Race 8 - Maiden Claiming - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $29600 Class Rating: 76

INNER TURF FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $15,000, IF FOR $14,000, ALLOWED 1 LB.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 3 DELIGHTFUL DREAMER 3/1
                    # 13 VIANI 9/2
                    # 8 CANDY'S DREAM 6/1
DELIGHTFUL DREAMER looks very strong to best this field. Facing a much less demanding field than last time out. Has been racing soundly and has among the strongest speed in the race for today's distance. Could provide positive gains based on decent recent Equibase Speed Figs with an average of 68. VIANI - Has to be given a chance versus this group of horses in this race displaying formidable figures recently and an average Equibase speed fig of 67 under similar conditions. This filly looks good for this event since Casse has a strong win percent with horses going this distance. CANDY'S DREAM - Has to be given a shot versus this group displaying very strong numbers as of late and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 70 under similar conditions. Ought to compete very well in the early pace clash which bodes well with this group.

                      # 2 PRINCESITA L 6/5
                      # 3 GIAH'S SPIRIT 3/1
                      # 4 PRETTY AND PROUD 10/1
I think PRINCESITA L is a very strong choice. Castro has been scorching the last month, winning at a nifty 36 percent rate. Ought to come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved swiftly to the lead recently. Ought to be given consideration - I like the figs from the last outing. GIAH'S SPIRIT - With one of the most competitive jockeys in terms of dividends at the window, don't count this filly out. Have to look at solely on class, with some of the top class figures of this group of horses. PRETTY AND PROUD - Conditioner boasts very strong win numbers at this distance and surface. With Velez in the saddle guiding her, this filly should be able to break out early in this contest.

                        Charles Town - Race #3 - Post: 7:57pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,800 Class Rating: 69

                        Rating:

                        #2 PISTOL P (ML=5/1)
                        #1 EISELE (ML=9/2)
                        #7 PONTICELLO (ML=3/1)

PISTOL P - Early speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. This bullring favors speedy front running horses starting from the inside. Seeing as this is what we have with this horse, I'm going to take a long hard look at this one. Entered an Allowance race at Charles Town last out and raced on a sloppy track finishing seventh. Expect better in today's race. EISELE - Ran last time out against much better company at Charles Town. The move down the class ladder should suit him well. Ranked number 1 in EPS (earnings per start). Another notice that this horse has the class to win. PONTICELLO - Really have to figure this fine animal is going to be right there near the finish line.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #5 LET'S GET PHYSICAL (ML=8/5),

LET'S GET PHYSICAL - No pace in this race to help this sustainer's dreams at winning.

#6 Town Classic-hard trying 8 year old has a 6-20-11 record from his 51 starts with over 353k in earnings. He has been in the money in 7 of his 8 starts on an off track, drops in class and will be tough to hold off.

#4 Happy Farm-came off a two month layoff last out and rallied to get his 5th win from 7 starts here. He keeps I.Oritz, likes an off tack and is the one to beat.

#3 Musical America-has been in the money in 4 of 5 on an off track and missed by only 3 at this same level last out. He cuts back in distance and that will help his chances at a price.
