The 76-64 Seattle Mariners are currently in a five-team 'scramble' for the AL's two wild card spots. Seattle rallied for an 8-5 victory at Houston on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday traveled back to Seattle for a three-game interleague series against the 49-95 Arizona Diamondbacks, who were swept in a three-game series at home by the Mariners last weekend. The Diamondbacks have lost 10 of their last 11 games and are on pace to finish 52-110, which would be the second-worst mark in franchise history behind the 51-111 squad from 2004.
Taking the mound on Friday will be Madison Bumgarner (7-9, 4.52 ERA) for Arizona and Marco Gonzales (7-5, 4.25 ERA) for Seattle. Bumgarner was part of a San Francisco starting rotation that helped the Giants win World Series crowns in 2010, 2012 and 2014. His 2014 postseason was legendary, as he made seven appearances (six starts), with an ERA of 1.03 over 52.2 innings with a KW ratio of 45-6. He was named the 2014 World Series MVP, finishing the series with a 2–0 record and an 0.43 ERA (one ER allowed over 21 innings). However, his last good season was back in 2016, when he went 15-9 with a 2.74 ERA. He was just 19-25 with San Francisco from 2017-19 and then signed as a FA with Arizona in 2020. He made nine starts in 2020, going 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA (team was 3-6). He's shown brief flashes of his old self this season but overall, his struggles have continued. He enters this contest 0-2 (team is 0-3) in his last three starts, allowing 14 ERs over 17 innings (7.41 ERA).
Gonzales began with St Louis back in 2014 but was traded to Seattle during the 2017 season. He went 13-9 in 2018 and 16-13 in 2019, before going 7-2 with a 3.10 ERA in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season (lowest ERA of any of his MLB seasons). However, Gonzales was forced to deal with injuries and ineffectiveness in the early part of 2021. A left forearm strain sidelined him for all of May and prior to July 4, he was 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA in 10 starts (team was 4-6). However, he's 6-0 with a 2.79 ERA over his last 13 starts (team is 10-3).
Sure the price may be a 'little high' but Seattle owns MLB's second-best moneyline mark at plus-$3,005. It is just $32 shy of the Giants, who own a record 14 games better than the Mariners! As for Seattle, the Mariners own MLB' worst moneyline mark at minus-$3,480, just under $1,300 worse than the second-worst team. Seattle also owns the worst road moneyline mark at minus-$2601. Easy choice to say, "Play Seattle."
