Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

Hawthorne Racecourse has a 14-race card set for this evening. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 11. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

1-Zero Net Profit (5/2)-Wired the field in last with a 59.1 opening half and probably won't be able to get that much of a breather tonight. Usually, this filly is slow leaving and races from the back. Will look for more speed tonight in its 2nd Haw start and bank on the upswing to continue.
5-Marcia (3-1)-Has won 3 of 9 here and this will be the 4th start back in the Miller barn. Bender has steered in the last 3 and the last 2 have been versus this kind. One move type should be in the hunt versus this crew with a sharp steer.
6-Johnnys Gal June (4-1)-This is a soft bunch and although only 1-13 is still worth using here. Team Leonard entry makes the 2nd start for them and did race a lively 2nd half. This four-year-old might be racing into shape for the upcoming Night of Champions and will look for a strong effort.

Race 12

4-Loyz Say When (6-1)-This Leonard 2-year-old trainee makes its 4th career start and has been racing evenly. There isn't much form in this race. This filly has stayed on stride and has a pilot that can make the most of an inside trip.
6-Todos (4-1)-Three-year-old filly broke as an even money favorite on 8-30. Has built a foundation at the fairs and should be a player if minds manners.
8-Freddie Da Fox (3-1)-One of these days or years this 6-year-old will win again and there isn't anything to fear in this field. Hopefully the price won't be short, 0-27 in Stickney and 0-32 in the last 2 years but just missed in the last 2 starts.

Race 13

2-Lucky Crusader (5-1)-Won versus similar 2 back and then moved up and was in too deep. Now back to the kind where a win could happen. Should get a way in a good seat and could use one nice move to sweep by down the lane.
4-Upbeat Big Guys (25-1)-The program shows this 7-year-old moving up in class but this really isn't any tougher than NW310CL. That said, is only 1-27 lifetime and the trainer/driver takes a seat so might not be bet. But raced the last half in 55.3 on 8-30, and if the pace is solid Big Guy should be rolling down the lane.
6-Et Tu Brute (7/2)-Seekman tried a gate to wire plan versus the $8k claimers in last and that didn't work. Same pilot tonight and this is a better spot. The Hansen barn doesn't race often but has booked 33% winners over the last 30 days. Should get the top here and won't have to go in .55 in the opening half. Looks like a main player with a smooth trip.

Race 14

2-Sharia (12-1)-Price shot will need a good steer and from this post should be close to the lead throughout. This mare has been an every other good start horse, and this is the time for a good try.
8-Dome With Kisses (5-1)-Comes off a win and now steps-up. Lasix kicked in the 2nd try and this is not a deep group so will use after a 57.1 back half. Has hit the board in 4 of 6 with 2 wins at Haw and should offer a solid price. The Eckley barn has batted 28% winner in the past 30 days and Wilfong should be able to get into striking range by the top of the lane.

Kentucky Downs – Race 7. Post time: 3:41 CT

2 – Koala Princess (6-1)

Couldn’t have been more impressive winning her debut sprinting on grass at Monmouth Park last month, taking control quickly and then cruising to an eight length romp without ever being asked for her best. Obviously, this is a much tougher task, but the daughter of More Than Ready acts like a quality 2-year-old that should handle today’s extra furlong without any issues whatsoever. Probably quick enough to make the lead but handy enough to stalk and pounce if the race shape dictates, the A. Delacour-trained filly lands hot-riding J. Rosario and is worth a play at or near her morning line of 6-1.

Kentucky Downs – Race 8. Post time: 4:15 CT

6 – Tobys Heart (3-1)

Talented daughter of Jack Milton was a willing third in the Lake George S.-G3 at Saratoga in late July but today returns to sprinting where’s she’s proven to be most effective. Freshened and training smoothly in the interim, the B. Lynch-conditioned filly has the perfect second flight, stalking style for this course and distance, and with the switch to J. Rosario she should be primed for a major effort. At 3-1 on the morning line, she’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Golden Gate

Golden Gate Fields is in our sights this week, and the Late Pick 4 in races 6-9 is enticing.

Three claiming races and what looks like an evenly matched maiden race make up the sequence, and a $72 suggested ticket with a 3x4x3x4 approach is the strategy this week.

Here’s a look at the combatants that show up on the ticket”:

6th Race (7:15 p.m. ET, claiming)

REV REE was claimed at this level two back when she lost by a head, and then followed with a good third for a higher price.

Trainer Jack Steiner has put her back to the purchase price and this looks like a great opportunity to get to the winner’s circle. Can adjust to pace and will fight it out to the end.

Also on the ticket: GOLDEN IRIS, SAY IT WITH ROSES.

7th Race (7:45 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

LMLOOKNFORMISCHIEF has had just one start, and it was a good one over this strip as he improved position and held on for second, while not threat to the clear winner.

That race has some perky fractions, especially for this first-time starter to face, and he can improve with that race under his belt.

Also on the ticket: NUESTRO ENGREIDO, VINNIEBOB, SLOOP JOHN B.

8th Race (8:15 p.m. ET, claiming)

PARTY SPIRIT came up on the short end of a three-horse photo finish last out and showed significant improvement in going so.

She’s definitely heading in the right direction in her career as that on-the-board finished was her first in four previous start, and she wasn’t really close in any of those.

She took to the Golden Gate turf last time and continued improvement will make her a strong player.

Also on the ticket: BLUEGRASS SKY, SILK ROAD SALLY.

9th Race (8:45 P.M. ET, claiming)

PURR CAT comes out of starter allowance races and lands in a straight claiming event here, and the switch to this level should give her a good chance at victory.

She was sixth on the turf last time and moves back over to the main track, where she won here in May.

Also on the ticket: ANGELO’S PRIDE, KNOWN, PAPER BOY.

Golden Gate - Race #2

#2 Bender	He took a big step forward last time out when third at 39/1 with Del Mar MCL types, but the price gets much shorter this time around. That said, the other logical players have had plenty of chances, so this guy has a right to be tough here with some borderline career maiden types.
#4 Thatsabadboy	Forward player gets blinkers for this one and isn't far off what it might take to land this, but he has had 11 chances and is short on excuses at this point.
#3 El Joy	One of his better efforts came in his lone local try, but he is another who has chances and doesn't usually threaten the winner. Underneath for me.
Race Summary	Bender was competitive with Del Mar maiden claimers and might be a decent fit with the locals here as he heads north. The three other logical players drawn outside of him have combined for 29 losses already.

Golden Gate - Race #5

#4 Dartmoor	Price player has some modest finishing ability in a race where some cheap forward players may not stay this short trip. He goes second off the layoff after an encouraging effort last out.
#8 Smoke Stack	He'll drop to this level for the first time after an okay effort at the $8,000 when racing off the layoff. The one to beat at what probably becomes a pretty short price.
#5 Smiling Patrick	Speed drops from the $16,000 level after a string of fading efforts, and he's a danger if he gets loose with these cheaper types. I'd want him on the tickets.
Race Summary	Dartmoor is worth a price look in a race without a ton of finishing punch, and he can be in the mix with these if he can build on the comeback effort last time out.

Golden Gate - Race #7

#2 Nuestro Engreido	He was well behind the top pair when they met in August, and he has since come back to a good second in open company. I don't trust him a whole lot, but the price might be right to see if he can run back to the last one.
#5Lmlooknformischief	He finished a few lengths in front of the top choice in his debut, and he'll get bet as a logical player off that try. Tough if he moves forward here.
#7 Bandera Azteca	He has a right to come forward in this second lifetime start while adding blinkers, and the price may be fair to see if he can turn the tables on the likely chalk.
Race Summary	Nuestro Engreido showed a little bit of life in the last try, and that sort of effort is very much in line with what it should take to land this. Anything like the 8/1 ML price would feel playable.

Los Alamitos TB - Race #4

#3 Stir the Pot	Had only brief speed in a rare turf appearance last out at Del Mar, but was an easy maiden winner in fast time here two back. They'll have trouble catching him if he reverts to his dirt form.
#4 Nichiren	Has excellent speed and will try take it them early; comes off a second at Del Mar and probably won't be of much value on the tote.
#1 The Beat	Turns back to a sprint and has been running vs. sharp company; the addition of blinkers should keep him closer and he'll likely be moving well on the tail end of it.
Race Summary	Stir the Pot had a tremendous outing on this track two races back and anything close to that will make him difficult to catch.

Los Alamitos TB - Race #8

#1 Big Fish	His first two-turn dirt attempt resulted in a win in the Cal Cup Day Stakes at Santa Anita; has not been out since that day in January, but he has plenty of works over the past months and looks ready for his return. Takes on older but has plenty of performances that indicate he's worthy of the challenge.
#6 Desmond Doss	Won the Bertrando over this strip two races back and is a solid performer at the mile distance.
#5 Galilean	Was mid-pack vs. open company last time and last won when he took the California Flag Stakes last October at Santa Anita. Well connected and the morning line favorite.
Race Summary	Big Fish makes his return off an eight-month layoff and has the credentials to be a solid player off the bench.

Los Alamitos TB - Race #9

#7 Pedro Perez	Was third during the Los Al TB meet in July and then won and was second during the Los Al QH mixed season; likes the venue and has shown an interest in finishing well over the strip.
#1 Whisky My God	Showed good speed in all four starts but has been in retreat mode in his last three; takes a significant class drop and should be the one to catch.
#5 Calder Vale	Was sixth at Del Mar last out and might be able to pick up some pieces late in the game.
Race Summary	Pedro Perez will follow a scorching pace for this level and has enough late energy to be troublesome.

The Key: I like the price we are getting on the Arizona Cardinals Sunday. They ranked 6th in total offense last season at 384.6 YPG. They upgraded their offense in the offseason by signing AJ Green. And their defense was at least decent ranking 13th in the NFL at 351.9 yards per game allowed. They added JJ Watt in the offseason as well. The Titans will be good again, but I don't think their offense will be as good after losing coordinator Art Smith to the Atlanta Falcons. And their defense is a problem after ranking 28th in total defense at 398.3 YPG allowed last year. The Titans are also dealing with a ton of injuries and COVID issues coming into the season and chemistry could be a problem because of it. Ryan Tannehill missed practice time due to COVID, and he's trying to learn a new offense. Take Arizona.

The Panthers and Jets both have offensive lines that are ranked in the bottom 3rd to start the season at Pro Football Focus. The Jets will be missing a lot of key players, especially on defense. They won't be able to take advantage of the sub-par Panthers' offensive line. A road team with a rookie head coach and rookie QB making his first start against a really smart forward-thinking coaching staff. This will be the second year in Matt Rhule's system, and Carolina should improve by a few wins off their 5-12 record last year. This number seems low to me with all the injuries piling up for the Jets. I will take off 2.5 points for home field which would suggest Carolina is only 1.5 points better. I don't think so. Light play on the Panthers!
