AFLAXENDREAM - Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. Trainer Laugherty moves this animal down the class scale to face a lower rated field. Look for a strong performance given the class advantage. This filly is in fine form, having run a nice race on September 14th, finishing third. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. This filly's last speed rating is strong enough to score here, I'll play her back again this time around. GIMME CLEARANCE - The rider/trainer pair of Dominguez and Silva has a strong return on investment together. I like horses that return to a similar class level after dropping at least five Equibase class figure points like this one did last out. I believe she'll be competitive at this class level. Filly took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape.

LA LA ANGEL - When scrutinizing today's class figure, she will have to notch a much better fig than last race out to be competitive in this dirt sprint. LINDA'S CITY - The Brain tells me to keep my distance from horses in sprint contests that haven't finished in the money in short distance events recently. MISS CELESTE - Finished fifth last time out. Would have to perk up to land in the top three today. Earned a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure in the last race in a $10,000 Maiden Claiming race on September 2nd. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that fig.

Gibson, who is 7-2 with a 1.97 ERA in his "home" starts, is off a quality effort but the Phillies didn't give him enough run support. That shouldn't be an issue today; Howard is 1-6 with a 6.51 ERA for his career. He's supported by a Pirate pen which has a 5.20 ERA on the road. The Philadelphia bats came alive yesterday with 12 runs. With the Pirates just 23-54 on the road, this one goes to the surging Phillies. Consider laying the wood.

The White Sox are division champs, and we will see if they suffer a let down in their first game since clinching the AL Central.
Dylan Cease will toe the slab for the Sox, and he has an ERA over 5.00 on the road. He allowed six runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings in his only start against the Indians this season.
Cleveland will hand the ball to Shane Beiber, who will likely be on a pitch count in his first start coming off the DL.

#309/310 ASA FREE PLAY ON Under 54 Points – Liberty vs Syracuse, Friday at 8 PM ET - At first glance we see two teams that want to run the football which in turns means less clock stoppage and lower scoring games in general. Liberty ranks 20th in rushing attempts per game at 44, Syracuse is 64th at 36.5. Both teams may have a hard time establishing the run though as the defenses they face are stout against the rush. In fact, the Flames have the 3rd best rushing defense in terms of yards allowed per rush at a miniscule 1.5RYPA, while allowing only 44 rushing yards per game overall. The Orange are giving up 92 rushing yards per game which ranks 26th while allowing 2.5 yards per attempt (17th best in the nation). Liberty does rate much better in terms of yards per point scored at 11.6 which is 21st, but Syracuse ranks 92nd in that same statistical category at 17.9YPPT. Another key factor here is pace of play as both have been conservative in their offensive approach this season. Liberty is averaging 71.5 plays per game which is around the national average, but Syracuse runs just 64.5 plays per game which ranks 107th. The Flames had two 40+ point outbursts but they came against a pair of bad defenses in Old Dominion and Cambell. The one defense they played which is like the Orange was Troy and they managed just 21 points in that game. Syracuse has played in two lower scoring games versus Ohio U and Rutgers before posting 62 on Albany last week. Coincidentally, that offensive outburst last week by the Cuse has driven this line up higher than it should be. The bet here is UNDER.

The Cardinals are playing a doubleheader today. My involvement - a pizza bet - is fading Jack Flaherty. He's scheduled to start against Zach Davies in Game 2. St. Louis is hot. The Cubs are in rebuild mode. I understand that. I also know, though, that those backing the Cardinals are paying a premium to get Flaherty - and he's not going to pitch very long. I consider Flaherty one of the best pitchers in the National League. But he's endured an injury-plagued season. He missed 2 1/2 months because of a strained oblique muscle and then he was shut down following his Aug. 24 appearance because of shoulder soreness. He hasn't pitched since. The Cardinals are going to be extra careful with him here. They want to ease Flaherty into the postseason when the games really matter. So essentially the Cardinals are laying a monster price in what amounts to a glorified bullpen game. I'm not a fan of Davies, but he does have a 1.69 ERA in three starts versus St. Louis this season. The wind is blowing out at 14 miles per hour, so there should be plenty of runs. The Cubs are the more powerful team ranking 11th in homers with 202. The Cardinals are 20th in homers with 176.
