The 3-5 Minnesota Vikings come into Sunday's game with the 5-3 LA Chargers, enduring a season's worth of frustrating losses. Their five losses have been by a total of just 18 points, including two OT losses. The Chargers know the feeling, as they had a similar start last season. Their first five losses were by a combined 19 points and also had two ending in overtime. The bottom line is, as the teams take the field Sunday at So-Fi Stadium, Minnesota's season is 'on the brink,' while the Chargers are tied with the Raiders atop the AFC West, with KC and Denver lurking just one game back at 5-4.

Minnesota has also had to deal with five players on the COVID-19 list, including two starters. Safety Harrison Smith will miss Sunday's game, but center Garrett Bradbury could return. There is also RB Dalvin Cook, who is facing a lawsuit from a former girlfriend, who alleges the running back assaulted her during an altercation at his home last year. Cook ran for over 1,500 yards last season with 16 TDs plus caught 44 passes. However, in six games this season, he has 554 yards rushing on 4.8 YPC with only two TDs and a mere 15 receptions. QB Kirk Cousins is once again putting up impressive numbers (68.2% / 2,140 yards 16 TDs and two INTs), as he has two excellent WRs in Jefferson (46 / 13.7 YPC / 4 TDs) and Thielen (45 / 7 TDs). However, Minnesota is averaging a middle-of-the-pack 24.3 PPG (17th). A big failing is the team is converting just 35.7% on third downs (25th of 32 teams).

The Chargers have a young and exciting QB in Justin Herbert (66.1% / 2,350 yards / 18 TDs and 6 INTs), who just broke out of a two-game slump that saw him 'earn' QB ratings of 67.8 and 66.7 in his previous two games. He completed a career-high 84.2% of his passes against the Eagles (LA won 27-24), throwing for 356 yards with two TDs and zero INTs (123.2 QB rating). RB Ekeler (479 yards / 4.7 YPC / 5 TDs / plus 36 catches and 3 TDs) is 10th in the league in scrimmage yards and has five 100-yard games this season. Like Cousins, Herbert has an excellent WR duo in Allen (57 catches / 2 TDs) and Williams (37 catches / 15.5 YPC / 6 TDs).

Both teams know all to well about "close finishes" but LA's hard luck losses are in the rearview mirror of the 2020 seson, while the Vikings are 'living it' right here in 2021. If the Chargers are going to a playoff team in 2021 (we know Minnesota will NOT be), they will have to win games like this. That's my bet and laying a FG shouldn't be an issue.

Kirk Cousins is having a quietly good year with a 103.4 passer rating while completing 68.2 percent of his passes and tossing 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Minnesota is 7-0 ATS in its last seven games after being outgained by 100 or more total yards in two consecutive games. Los Angeles is coming off a win at Philadelphia thanks to a last second field goal to snap a two-game losing streak. The Chargers are outscoring opponents by just three ppg at home where they are 2-2 and will be out to keep pace in the AFC West. Justin Herbert went 32-38 for 356 yards and two touchdowns last week against the Eagles which snapped a two-game slide where he posted passer ratings of 66.7 and 67.8. He faces a solid Vikings passing defense that is ranked No. 16 in the league and they are allowing 257.3 ypg through the air on the road. The Chargers are 2-11 ATS in their last 13 games after gaining 400 or more total yards in their previous game. Here, we play on road underdogs or pickems in the second half of the season averaging 1.25 or fewer turnovers per game after a game where they committed no turnovers going up against teams forcing 1.25 or fewer turnovers per game. Sunday's Free NFL Pick is on the Denver Broncos as a slim 1.5-point home favorite against the Philadelphia Eagles. I think when the Broncos traded away Von Miller the assumption was that this team was giving up on this season. Denver has won and covered each of their last two games and just played their best game of the season in last week's 30-16 blowout win at Dallas. The Eagles continue to be a team that gets respect, despite the fact that they are 3-6 with their 3 wins coming against the Falcons, Panthers and Lions. Philly has run the ball extremely well, but their defense sucks and it's not going to be easy for them to establish that run game against a good Denver defense. Bet the Broncos -1.5!

Just like me folks, I am going to keep this analysis extremely sweet and very short. LOL. Guys, if Kansas City is going to make a run at the playoffs, they must start here and they must start now. After this week, they have Dallas and Denver up next. So, they need some wins and more importantly, they need some self-confidence. Despite their offensive numbers dipping a bit, the Chiefs defense has tightened, allowing just 15.5 PPG over their last four outings. Let’s be honest, the Las Vegas offense sputters badly when facing aggressive defenses. I know they picked up DeSean Jackson. But he’s not a kid anymore and besides, if he was significant, don’t you think L.A. would have kept him around? This team doesn’t need any more distractions. Two star players and a coach all gone within the last few weeks. This is a real chance for KC to leapfrog a few teams in the AFC West guys. Andy Reid won’t mess that up. This is a very short price for the Chiefs to lay as they have taken six of the last seven meetings in this division rivalry SU. Laying under a field goal, take KC guys. Thank you.
