Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Harbor Knight #3, 5/2):

One of the leading Louisiana-based trainers in the state has this 5-yr-old gelding back in action at the Fair Grounds. Ron Faucheux has solid numbers, and you know when you back one of his charges, they have a great chance to score. Last out in a claiming game race, the son of Harborage ended up 2nd, but the significant moment in that race was the furious rally that he mustered. With a bit of rating early, I think he should be in an excellent striking position towards the top of the lane. This one is a bet at anything over 5/2 on the tote.

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Jo Dee’s Angel (BC) #6, 6/1):

Lately, trainer Greg Tracy has been red-hot over at Delta Downs. He also has runners at the Fair Grounds, and I like the look of this one by Second in Command. Getting drawn to the outside gate will help get him clear of any traffic. Earlier this year, Tracy’s runner was plying his trade up at Canterbury Park. A series of solid efforts at a higher level make this one enticing as the gelding gets back at it. In for a tag ($25k), the best news is that Jareth Loveberry gets the call, and after a sensational season up at Arlington, we know he has skills to ride in grass sprints. I am hoping this one is going to be above 6/1 on the tote. Let’s go!

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 6F, OC40k, 3+):

A group of 8 sprinters make up this field, and it looks like a pretty evenly matched field. Trainer Vickie Foley has what I consider to be a pretty tepid favorite in Coltonator #5. I am concerned that this 5-yr-old by Congrats was such a short price in an OC62.5k race back at Churchill in mid-November. That was a mess of a day under the Twin Spires, and maybe that is why the gelding failed to get the job done … He has a solid record at the Fair Grounds (8/2-2-1), so maybe that is why the odds are so low. With Brian Hernandez in the irons, it makes sense that Foley’s charge might be well-bet. I want to use this runner, but I am pretty keen on the other Hernandez jockey who is entered in this race. Colby H. gets Tom Amoss’ Isolate #7, and this one makes much more sense to me at odds of 7/2. Not only does the colt by Mark Valeski have better odds, but Amoss is going to send him out with a race under his belt. See, his last contest on 21 Nov. was the colt’s 1st with his new trainer. Before that, he was under the care of Kathy Ritvo. Down at Gulfstream (and once up @AQU), this one never missed the board in 5 career starts. The 3-yr-old should be fit enough to get the job done. It’s Hernandez vs. Hernandez … the Thursday ice-cold Exacta!

            Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 7 w 5

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Therisastormbrewin #4, 2/1):

Here is a gelding by Broken Vow that was claimed many a time in 2021. Linda Rice to Michelle Nevin, and those in-between ... all tried to get this one to the winner’s circle … to no avail. Now, Rob Atras will attempt the feat, and I think he has a good chance. This is an accomplished conditioner, and his numbers speak to it. With Kendrick Carmouche in the saddle, what must happen is this 5-yr-old has to break well, get loose on the lead, and perhaps he can control the fractions enough to get home in the end. Ever since his last win (AQU-26 Mar), he has been up against it. Maybe this time, at odds of 2/1 or higher, he can win the day for Atras …

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Opt #5, 10/1):

This 5-yr-old gelding by Will Take Charge has extensive experience against OC45k state bred company on the NYRA grass courses. But this time of year, the Ribaudo Barn likes to make the switch to the MT @AQU. Last year at this time, the runner went turf to dirt, and finished 2nd in a couple of MT route races. Coming into this level makes a ton of sense, and Trevor McCarthy gets the opportunity to ride. His numbers during the Meet are not stellar, but he can notch a win aboard this one. My sense is that the gelding is fit enough. My question is … will his odds remain around 10/1. I am not so sure … best to tote watch, and make an appraisal then. Let’s say this, if he is above 5/1 by post time—that’s a bet.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #5 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 7F, AOC80k, 2):

The focal point on this Thursday card is a tough AOC match—6 will go. All of these runners entered here have experience, and there is not one that has the look of a 1st time starter. The central query is can anyone beat the couple entry … Life Is Great #1 and Hagler #1A? Based on their form, even if one scratches, they look formidable. Both are coming off wins at the MSW80k/90k level. The Klesaris and Rudy Rod. Barns will look to be dueling for the lead at the break. Of course, I want to try and beat both of them with an ice-cold Exacta … taking advantage of those bettors that want to capitalize on the 2 for 1 special. For my money, I am particularly interested in Bill Morey’s Florida Gator #4. This gelding is going to be a square price, around 8/1, gets the services of Carmouche, and has a great leg kick. By Lea, and thus First Samurai, I am hoping that Morey has him ready to fire after that last race at Churchill Downs. Welcome back to NYRA … go get ‘em Gator! Let’s play this runner over the coupled entry … that could turn into an Exacta to load up on!

              Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 4 w 1/1A

Daily Horse Racing Tips – Aqueduct – 16th December 2021
                By Spotlight Racing Group

                Aqueduct
                NAP Fast Break (1:19 Aqueduct)
                Next Best Perceived (3:08 Aqueduct)
                Other Forgotten Mission (2:38 Aqueduct)
                Break and gone

Race 2 at Aqueduct is a $50,000 Claiming contest over six furlongs on the dirt surface and it’s the horse in stall six, Fast Break, who can strike for Orlando Noda and his team.

This five-year-old son of Uncle Mo consistently runs his race as he’s only finished out of the first three on three occasions from thirteen starts which include three victories, two of which were here at Aqueduct, with his Maiden Special Weight win being over course and distance.

Coming between those two was an Allowance victory at Pimlico back in April but it’s his win here last time out that really catches the eye.

Over a seven-furlong trip, he was four wide, and even five wide, coming into the turn but when he was given a shake of the reins by Irad Ortiz Jr. he stretched clear to win by an impressive six and a quarter lengths, which was quite something considering he done much more running than his rivals during the race.

That effort was convincing on the eye and connections are dropping him back to six furlongs for this, but that shouldn’t be a problem especially as he’s drawn away from the rail and he should be able to stalk the pace from there, so all looks set for a big run under Irad’s brother Jose Ortiz.

                Perceived back in action

Linda Rice’s Perceived is lightly raced for a five-year-old which tells me that he’s had his issues off the track but he has plenty of ability and has been freshened up for this $45,000 mile Claiming event, Race 6.

After three failed attempts to break his maiden, this gelding then reeled off back-to-back victories over this course and distance, albeit the two wins did come a year apart, but he’s shown a liking for this track and his six and a quarter length victory in this grade back in January was an impressive one.

He ran well on a few occasions after that win and has since been off the track since May, so he comes into this off a seven-month break, but he has won off of a lay off before so that isn’t a concern and I doubt we’ve seen the best of him yet so from an inside draw in stall two he should go close.

                Mission accomplished!

The $28,000 Claimer over six furlongs at Aqueduct, which is Race 5 on the card, is an open looking race in which there’s plenty of value to be had and one colt who looks to be overpriced is Forgotten Mission, who broke his maiden at Monmouth Park three starts back and could quite easily hit the board here.

This colt had been finishing just out of the frame in Maiden Claiming races before making all of the running over an extended five furlongs in a Maiden Special Weight and he could get an uncontested lead here from stall five.

Best Horse Racing Bets for Thursday, December 16, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I chose my races from Aqueduct Racetrack, Fair Grounds Race Course, and Turfway Park for my Thursday picks, which turned out to be an epic day for underdog wagers.

Among the long-odds moneymakers, I did find a single morning-line favorite that merited a bet—but even that race revealed a 50/1 longshot worth a value show ticket.

Don’t take my word for it, though. Make your own SWAGs with a review of the full race-cards at all three tracks at one of our top horseracing wagering sites.

                  Good luck!
                  Thursday’s Picks for Aqueduct Racetrack

We’ll begin with race two, a six-furlong claiming race on the main track for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 7/2 second-favored Fast Break, ridden by Jose L. Ortiz.

This five-year-old gelding finished in the money nine of his 13 career starts, winning three, but his 2021 record is what convinces me: Five money finishes in eight starts, two of them wins. That’s the best you’ll find in this nine-horse field.

Orlando Noda trains Fast Break for Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons Racing.

Race six is a one-mile claiming run for three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. I like the fourth-favored (at 6/1) Perceived, with Jose Lezcano in the irons.
This five-year-old gelding finished five of his nine career starts in the money, winning two. He’s posted consistently high-speed figures throughout his career.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers in both wins and earnings for thirteen consecutive years, Linda Rice trains Perceived for D.J. Stable LLC.

Race seven is a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race for two-year-olds. The morning line seems to think this race is a lock for the 1/1A coupled entry, but I‘m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 underdog, Florida Gator, with veteran jockey Kendrick Carmouche aboard.

This gelding moneyed all three of his career starts, winning one. He ran third in his initial maiden run (he actually finished first but was DQ’d down to third after the hard bump of a competitor in the upper stretch), graduated in his second, and came from behind to finish second in a starter allowance race at Churchill Downs just last month.

Regularly ranked in the top 100 for wins, earnings, or both, twenty-year racing veteran William E. Morey trains Florida Gator for owners James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario. Morey put Carmouche in the irons for Florida Gator’s graduation victory.
My Thursday Picks for Fair Grounds Race Course

We’re starting on the turf course with race four, a one mile claiming run for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won three races. I like one of the three 9/2 underdogs in this seven-horse race—Carson’s Princess, piloted by Jose Riquelme.

This three-year-old filly finished eight of her 11 career starts in the money, winning two—both of which were in 2021, which edges her to the top of the statistics in this field.

Shane Wilson—who’s having the winningest year of his twenty-plus years in the racing business—trains Carson’s Princess for owner Phyllis L. Presswood.

Race six is a 5-1/2 furlong claiming run on the turf for three-year-olds and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 4/1 second-favored Denver City, ridden by Mitchell Murrill.
This five-year-old gelding moneyed six of his eight career starts, winning five—a five-win streak that lasted from last December until he finished fourth in the Remington Park Turf Sprint Stakes (Black Type) this past September.

Thirty-year racing veteran Chris A. Hartman trains Denver City for owner-breeder James W. Rogers.

We move back to the main track for race seven, a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting on the 5/1 underdog, Vice Versa, with Juan P. Vargas in the irons.

This five-year-old gelding is the statistical standout in this eight-horse field, finishing in the money for 14 of his 23 career starts, eight of those wins. In 2021 he’s maintained his stats, finishing six of his ten starts in the money, winning three.

Shane Wilson trains Vice Versa for owner Wayne T. Davis. Wilson has tapped Vargas to saddle Vice Versa for his last four races.
                  Thursday Picks for Turfway Park

Let’s start on the all-weather track with race three, a six-furlong claiming run for three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. I like the 5/1 underdog, Z U At the Races, with veteran jockey John McKee aboard.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 18 career starts, winning two, but it’s his 2021 record that impresses me: Six money finishes in 11 starts, two of them wins. That makes him the statistical leader of this ten-horse pack.

James M. Watkins—who professionally is having a very good year—trains Z U At the Races for owners Dennis Pohl and Lawrence J. Gavilsky II.

Race six is a one-mile allowance optional claiming race on the all-weather track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 6/1 fourth-favored Takntothecleaners, ridden by Rodney A. Prescott.
This three-year-old filly finished four of her five career starts in the money, winning three. Her only non-money finish was a disappointing sixth place in the Kentucky Downs TVG Preview Dueling Grounds Oaks (Black Type) at Ellis Park in August.

Ethan W. West trains Takntothecleaners for owner Michael Hernon. West has put Prescott in the irons for all three of Takntothecleaners’ victories.

Race seven is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance race on the all-weather track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I agree with the morning line: buy a win ticket on Tiz Splendid News, piloted by veteran jockey Gerardo Corrales.

This three-year-old filly moneyed five of her six career starts, winning one. She notably finished second in the Trapeze Stakes (Black Type) last December at Remington Park. In this lackluster field of 14, she’s the star.

Breeders’ Cup veteran Wesley A. Ward trains Tiz Splendid News for Well Glory 81, Inc.

Incidentally, the 50/1 longshot in this race, Margaret Drive, is worth a look. The three-year-old filly is jockeyed this race by Samuel E. Bermudez, and she’s trained by Sharon Simon for owner Inocencio Quezada.

Normally, her record would be nothing to write home about, but in this race, that record isn’t all that horrible when compared to those of the rest of this field: five money finishes in 17 career starts, one of them a win. Yeah, I know. Still, worth a value show bet.

                      RACE 2: ARISTOCRATIC (#2)

Mi Tres Por Ciento is the horse to beat as he makes his first start off the claim for Linda Rice. His performances from this meet last year would absolutely crush this field, but there are some question marks surrounding him based on his recent form. He just hasn’t looked like quite the same horse since returning from a layoff in July, and needed an additional 3 months after that start before returning this fall. He was claimed for $40k by Linda Rice at Keeneland, but now drops to $25k after another 7 weeks on the shelf. He can obviously win, but I’m skeptical at a short price. I don’t want a fellow short price like Fast Break, who woke up for Rob Atras last month and is now claimed off that barn. The same goes for Baby I’m Perfect, who got a great trip to win going 7 furlongs last time out, but is unproven going this short. I instead want to look for some better options at more enticing prices. I would use Rejected Again, who gets needed class relief after facing tougher foes at the N1X allowance level. His form has declined recently, but he may not have appreciated turf or a sloppy track in his last two starts. My top pick is Aristocratic. I know his recent performances don’t quite measure up to those of the favorites, but he’s had valid excuses. He spent much of the year in the barn of a trainer who just doesn’t win on this circuit, ridden by a jockey who often gets way too aggressive. He was claimed by the sharp Gustavo Rodriguez barn last time and put in a better effort, rating on the front end before getting run down by a sharp foe late. He’s since been claimed by Charlton Baker, who doesn’t have great statistics with this move but generally does a good job with the horses who come into his care. He’s the primary speed form the inside and has plenty of prior races over this strip that would make him tough.

                      RACE 4: IT’S MANDATORY (#1)

The two likely favorites Therisastormbrewin and Profusion both come off good efforts. Therisastormbrewin drops slightly in class after checking in third at the $35k conditioned claiming level last time. He dueled for the lead that day and was negatively affected when drifting down to a dead rail in the stretch. That said, he was also competing over a muddy track, which he seems to prefer to fast going. He also figures to face pace pressure once again, as speedy rivals Spectatorless and A Colt Named Susie will also be looking for the lead. Profusion has improved in his last two starts going a mile, but he caught a very weak N2L field last time and is moving up in class of the claim for Linda Rice. The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting a fast pace so I want to give a long look to some closers. The most logical of those is Mandatory Payout, who moves up in class after being protected off the layoff last time. Yet I’m more interested in his similarly named foe It’s Mandatory. This Jeffrey Englehart trainee has spent much of his career racing on turf, but he’s clearly a better dirt horse and his overall form looks stronger once you parse out the grass races. He beat a decent group at Finger Lakes two back, and then ran better than it appears at Parx last time. That was a decent field and he did well to close for fourth after being badly compromised by a very slow pace. I like that he picks up Dylan Davis for his NYRA debut, and I’m not too concerned that he’s part of an entry since stablemate Jaa Mode doesn’t figure to attract much support.

                      RACE 8: CONVERTIBLE FREEZE (#11)

Workingman’s Dude is the one to beat after twice checking in third at this level. He had legitimate trouble in his career debut, but rebounded nicely in his second start, showing improved early speed before fading. He again performed well last time, taken off the pace by Jose Lezcano before rallying in the stretch. That was going 7 furlongs so he just has to stretch out an additional eighth of a mile here, and he looks like one that should handle the distance. I have more faith in him getting the mile than Devious Banker, who arguably owns the best dirt races in this field. He was a solid third on debut behind the superior Who Hoo Thats Me, and then was compromised by a two-wide trip against a rail bias on Oct. 22. A repeat of those efforts makes him a major player in this spot, and he goes out for the underrated Cleveland Johnson barn. However, he has more of a sprint pedigree and I’m somewhat skeptical of him handling a mile. My top pick is Convertible Freeze. This colt ran like one who badly needed the experience in his only dirt start, as he was off slowly and just looked unfocused racing at the back of the pack. He has subsequently improved in two turf starts, but I’m not sure that he’s necessarily a turf horse. He was making a move two back when he got guided into traffic in the stretch. And last time he was ridden pretty conservatively, not angled into the clear to hit his best stride until it was too late. I like him switching back to dirt, as progeny of Connect have combined to win 8 of 36 (22%) dirt route attempts. Brad Cox also has solid numbers with maidens going from turf to dirt routes.

                        Today’s Racing Tips – December 16th

There are five race meetings in Britain and Ireland on Thursday, with some competitive jumps action from Exeter, Fos Las and Naas. There are four handicaps on the card at Exeter, where easy ground should mean the field sizes are huge (at a track that usually does very well for runners). All-weather fans can enjoy the new surface at Southwell in the afternoon, and a twilight meeting at Chelmsford starting at 4pm.

Michael Scudamore’s maiden hurdler has shaped well under positive rides in two runs so far over hurdles at Ffos Las, possibly overdoing things from the front last time when very heavily backed. He will be suited by a drop back to two miles at Exeter on Thursday, and can put his experience to good use under Richie McClernon.

Stuart Edmunds useful handicapper ran a blinder over this course and distance last November in a huge field, and seems sure to be fully fit for this first run in 327 days. Soft ground suits him ideally, and he is very well treated now after not progressing from that effort last season.

                            Frank Cotolo

As our year-end report nears there are plenty of races that are still ready to be recorded in the 2021 betting record book, so stay with us for suggested contenders in selected features for any wager available. And—the never-ending TwinSpires H2W (horses-to-watch list) continues as those Mohawk Miles search for longshots in any class.

                            MOHAWK MILES
                            Thursday / Dec. 16

Each week we highlight some probable longshots from Mohawk Park in this features section. If they do not win at first crack, we add them to the H2W the following week as a bet-back while adding new possibilities to this Mohawk Miles section.

In Race 4–A decent qualifier brings Twin B Beachdreams back into action and he appears ready to make the scene.
In Race 7–Magics Wizard made up a lot of ground with his grinding style and could pay off well hitting anywhere on the board.

                            POWER PLAYS
                            Thursday / Dec. 16
                            Philly
                            Races 12, 13, 14

The late Pick 3 offers a good chance to end the day with a score. Here are our contenders we hope you consider when building your ticket.

                            Race 12
Clearly, morning line (ML) favorite Searching For You must be included, though starting the Pick 3 (P3) with a dead-on favorite doesn’t kill any tickets if it comes in. OK, use him, but not as a single. The outsider inside your ticket should be MB Matters. He picked up checks—including three wins and six seconds—this season, his first (did not race at two). His foes have dipped to this condition with a poor season behind them. A win here leaves you with little competition to win a good priced P3.

                            Race 13
Two stalkers can upset the public’s probable choice here. From the outside in, Protostar was gallant last week racing on the outside and just missed. Leaving from post 9 here he may have a clearer shot late. Also, Create lost the lead after a brief mid-race duel but held for second and offers a lot to the P4. Either of these two wrecks more tickets and lifts the probable P4 price.

                            Race 14
We go a bit deeper in leg 3, using Brigadoon, who has been waiting on the H2W list after scratching at Freehold. Drops into this, which is a good sign. Hes Rockin Ralphie is forgiven for his last race, a horrible trip expected at 99-1. He drops here to where he almost won for a new trainer. You could leave out the ML favorite, McNeil Z Tam, since a win by him would reduce the payoff—that is your call, because if this ticket hits otherwise, you have a lot of extra cash for the holidays.

Jeff Siegel’s “What Your Need to Know”
                              December 16, 2021

                              FAIR GROUNDS:

EIGHTH RACE – Although the trouble line makes no mention of it, Shishito was jostled and pinched back at the start in her debut in mid-October and actually did well to finish second while almost nine lengths clear of the rest in a highly-rated race two-turn all-weather affair at Presque Isle Downs. She seems certain to benefit from the outing, and as a daughter of Wooten Bassett from a mare by Monjeu figures to move up a ton with the switch to grass in this maiden event for juvenile fillies. She’s also a first-time Lasix user for hot trainer Michael Stidham, and with a healthy recent local work pattern and sporting the top speed figure in the field, she looks quite playable in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics at 5/2 on the morning line.

                              *

                              GULFSTREAM PARK:

TENTH RACE – We’ve been able to view a series of workouts on xbtv.com dating back to July at Saratoga by Avow and believe she has enough natural talent to win a maiden special weight sprint for juvenile fillies, even though we suspect she won’t show her best form until given a chance over a distance of ground. A $300,000 yearling from the first crop of Arrogate, she’s from the good middle distance stakes winning grass mare Peace Preserver, so while she’s probably not a quick type, trainer Todd Pletcher barn has been scorching hot during the early days of the Gulfstream Park championship season and has given this filly the proper foundation a be fit and ready. After proving much the best in a team drill gate drill six days ago at Palm Beach Downs without being asked, and at this extended sprint distance that will allow here to settle early and take hold late, we’re expecting a winning effort and therefore recommend a play at or near her morning line of 2-1.
