Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks
Fair Grounds - Race #6
Picks Notes
#6 Jo Dee's Angel Love that this guy has shown some speed and versatility, as he can run from a touch off the pace as well. This level might be a really good fit for him out of those allowance races at Canterbury, and the fact that he's in for a tag is no real concern, considering they twice offered him up for $15,000 earlier this year.
#5 Denver City Pace should appreciate getting back on the grass after that dud last time out, and he's down in class for this one, too. Pace player will likely have company early, but he's in the mix with something like his previous turf tries.
#1 Chimney Rock He is a very likely winner here while racing against a softer group than he has been accustomed to seeing in most of his career, but I just couldn't line up behind something like the 2/1 ML price when there are some others with decent form in here.
Race Summary Jo Dee's Angel gets the edge from what might be a perfect spying position just behind a couple of pace players. He has been very tough when in for a tag in the past and might offer a playable enough price.
Fair Grounds - Race #7
Picks Notes
#7 Isolate He has some tactical pace that might give him the jump on a couple of logical players who may be racing from just a bit further off it, and he has kept some pretty decent company in the past. Dangerous.
#8 Verb He's quick enough to get in the mix early from the wide draw, but he has really lacked that final finishing gear in nearly all of his recent starts. Easy enough to see him prompting, bidding, and settling for a piece.
#5 Coltonator He's a pretty reliable finisher, but he has been stuck at this level for some time and has not frequently been a serious threat late. His best stuff is obviously good enough to land this, but I wouldn't want an underlaid price.
Race Summary Isolate is capable of something better than he showed in that last one, and he might find himself in a perfect spot to prompt the leaders turning for home. Expecting an improved try.
Fair Grounds - Race #8
Picks Notes
#3 My Sweetness She showed some finishing interest in her debut on the turf, but she faded late when trying the dirt last out. She's probably going to end up being better than that on the main track, but she returns with Lasix for the move back to the lawn. Tough if she builds on the first turf try.
#7 Shishito She moved nicely into the pace on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs, and she gets Lasix while trying the turf in this second start. Have to think she's going to like the footing.
#6 Dreamworker He'll head right to the turf after a modest debut try when routing on the main track at Churchill, but he has a pretty fun pedigree for the grass try with Animal Kingdom on top of a Scat Daddy mare.
Race Summary My Sweetness and Dreamworker might be the right ones to use to try to beat Shishito if she gets overbet for tough connections, but My Sweetness has fewer questions to answer on the turf, having turned in a useful effort on the Keeneland lawn in October.
