Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks
Fair Grounds - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 Global Empire Worth a look at a square price after that really dull run last spring at Gulfstream, as he'll return with blinkers in a race without serious early speed, so maybe he goes on a mission and gets brave.
#2 Alejandro He has been a pretty reliable performer, and he has faced some tough customers along the way in his six races. He doesn't have a ton of excuses left, but his baseline effort is good enough to keep him in the picture.
#1 Crump Willing to try to beat this guy in the multis, as he has come up short as the chalk in three straight races, and he has not been a serious threat late in any of those tries. He's not impossible, but I think he'll be overbet here.
Race Summary Global Empire ran pretty well in his career debut here in February, but he has not backed it up in a couple starts since. He returns now with blinkers after some time away, and maybe that fresh speed can keep him in the mix.
Fair Grounds - Race #7
Picks Notes
#6 Adelaide Miss She has been tough when racing outside of stakes company, and she has some tactical pace that should leave her in a great spot into the far turn. Capable player.
#3 Mom's Red Lipstick She landed her only previous route try, and she might have a little upside here while moving back around two turns. She seems to have been working forwardly for this one, and the price should be right to have her on the tickets.
#1 Clara Peeters She has enough positional pace to find a good spot early on, but she has come up short at 4/5, 9/5 and 1/1 in her last three starts, so I'm happy to let her beat me here.
Race Summary Adelaide Miss has been a pretty reliable runner in her tries outside of the stakes ranks, and this doesn't feel like a super deep group for the level. Something like the 9/2 ML price would appeal.
Fair Grounds - Race #8
Picks Notes
#1 Miss Nitap She had a trickier trip than it looks last out when she lost position into the turn and had to re-rally after that. The rail draw does mean there is a chance something similar happens here, but she seemed like she has some more run than she was able to show that day.
#2 G's Squeeze She was plenty impressive when clearing her first state-level allowance condition in a romp last out, she doesn't seem to be meeting too much pace here today. Dangerous on the engine.
#7 New Year's Party She had the unfortunate luck of running into a graded stakes caliber LA-bred in that last one, and her best chance here would come if all the potential forward players got into battle early on -- maybe a bit unlikely, but not impossible.
Race Summary Miss Nitap got a trip note for me last time out, and she is probably quick enough to find a pressing spot just behind G's Squeeze. Would love to see them prompt her from the outside with purpose.
