Tonight I go back to my Mocs on the conference road once again as they will cover this big number at Western Carolina.

The Catamounts are at the bottom of the Southern Conference standings, as they come into this home contest with losses in their last pair of games and in 5 of their last 6 games overall. Their only win in that span is a 94-90 overtime win over the Citadel. That is the same Citadel team Chattanooga just hammered 85-67 their last time out!

The Moccasins have won and covered 4 in a row, and they are 13-3 now for the year straight up. On the road they have won 6 of 8 straight up and have covered in 5 of those 8.

Tennessee Chattanooga did sweep last year's season series both straight up and against the spread and I like them to open this year's series with the road win and cover.

            2* TENNESSEE CHATTANOOGA

I know both the Hornets and the Sixers have been trending low when it comes to totals of late - Charlotte on a 7-2 Under run their last 9, Philadelphia having played their last pair Under the total - but I am looking for these teams to pile up the points tonight as they usually do when they face one another.

Both of their early December series meetings landed Over the total, as the Over in this series stands at 8-1 the last 9 times the teams have faced one another.

For the year, Charlotte is 23-18 Over the total, while Philly has played Over the total in 4 of their last 7 this season.

Let's go Over in the City of Brotherly Love tonight.

              1* CHARLOTTE-PHILADELPHIA OVER

Best Horse Racing Bets for Wednesday, January 12, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I visited Gulfstream Park, Parx Racing, and Turf Paradise to find my Wednesday picks, and oddly enough agreed with the morning line at all three tracks far more often than usual. Even when our opinion differed, it was on which of the two top favorites would win the day.

Oh, and I found some oddities in odds-making at Parx, but you’ll discover that when you get to that section.

Be that as it may, don’t forget that you can examine the full race-cards of all three tracks at one of our best horseracing wagering sites.

                Good luck!
                Wednesday’s Picks for Gulfstream Park

Let’s start on the turf course with race six, a five-furlong allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. While the morning-line favorite has had a couple of good workouts, she hasn’t raced since last June.

So, I’m buying a win ticket on the 7/2 second-favored Richies Great Girl, with veteran jockey Victor Lebron in the irons.

This five-year-old mare finished eleven of her fifteen career starts in the money, winning seven of them. She’s still posting speed figures that saw her through a four-race winning spanning the end of 2020 through to the middle of 2021.

Top-ranked in both wins and earnings since 2015, Larry Rivelli trains Richies Great Girl for owners Patricia’s Hope LLC and Richard Ravin. Incidentally, Rivelli also trains this race’s favorite, Senora Roma.

We switch to the dirt track for race eight, a one-mile starter allowance run for four-year-old’s and upward. I like the second-favored entry (at 3/1)—Critical Threat, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione.
Yes, I see that the heavily favored (at 8/5) Tiz Rye Time finished a respectable fourth in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (Grade III)—but that was back in 2020, and he hasn’t won a race since then, either.

No, I’m betting on Critical Threat, a four-year-old gelding that moneyed three of his six career starts, winning one, his initial maiden attempt.

Building on 2021—his best year in the business—Brendan P. Walsh trains Critical Threat for Pocket Aces Racing LLC.

Let’s switch to the all-weather track for race nine, a 5-1/2 furlong allowance race for Florida-bred three-year-old fillies. I agree with the morning line here: Bet on the 5/2 favorite, Chacalosa, piloted by top jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

This filly moneyed two of her four career starts, winning one—the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (Black Type) last August. Not a bad way to graduate the maiden class.

Larry Rivelli trains Chacalosa for Patricia’s Hope LLC.
                Wednesday Picks for Parx Racing

We’re on the dirt track for race seven, a 5-1/2 furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won four races. My money’s on the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Empress Irene, with Ruben Silvera aboard.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money nine of her 17 career starts, winning three, including her most recent, another 5.5 furlong dirt run with Silvera in the irons.

Longtime horseracing veteran Michael L. Catalano Jr. trains Empress Irene for Just In Time Racing LLC.

Race eight is a seven-furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 7/2) Hey Dewzpots, ridden by veteran jockey Mychel J. Sanchez.

This five-year-old mare moneyed six of her nine career starts, winning one—her graduation victory just last month. Not a great record, but certainly enough to stand out among this otherwise unimpressive ten-horse field.
Fun fact about this race, the morning line has five of the entrants in this race tied for fourth-favored at 6/1.

Michael L. Catalano Jr. trains Hey Dewzpots for owner John Julia.

Race nine is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race for four-year-old’s that have never won two races. I like the 3/1 morning-line favorite for this race—Because I Can, with Mychel J. Sanchez aboard.

This four-year-old gelding finished in the money five of his eight career starts, winning one. He finished third in his initial maiden attempt, then won his next try, proceeding then to finishing third in his last three consecutive claiming races.

Another fun fact about this nine-horse race, the morning line ranks four of them at 5/1.

Longtime racing veteran Michael Charles Aro trains Because I Can for owner Albert R. Tassone.
My Wednesday Picks for Turf Paradise

Starting on the dirt track with race five—a five-furlong starter optional claiming run for four-year-old’s and upward—I’m buying a win ticket on the second-favored (at 4/1) Sombra Negra, ridden by veteran jockey Daniel P. Vergara.

This seven-year-old gelding finished 24 of his 39 career starts in the money, winning 14, which puts him at the top of the spreadsheet in the statistics for this eleven-horse field.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins, earnings, or both the past ten years, Justin R. Evans trains Sombra Negra for owners Justin R. Evans and Randy T. Thompson.

Race six is a 5-1/2 furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races. I agree with the morning line here and I’m betting my two dollars on the 2/1 favorite, Tothemoonandback, ridden by Keivan Serrano.
This four-year-old filly moneyed seven of her ten career starts, winning two—her initial maiden attempt back in October 2020 at Emerald Downs, and a much more recent claiming race here at Turf Paradise last November.

Twenty-year racing veteran Dayson LaVanway trains Tothemoonandback for owner Maria T. Gonzalez-Delgadillo.

Let’s move to the turf course for race eight, a one-mile allowance optional claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m betting on the second-favored entry (at 4/1) in this nine-horse field: My Indy, piloted by veteran jockey Harry Hernandez.

This six-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 18 career starts, winning three. He’s finished first in three of his most recent four races (and his last start ended with him crossing the wire a neck behind the frontrunner).

Bart G. Hone trains My Indy for owner Jamie Bolles. Hone has tapped Hernandez to saddle My Indy for his two most recent races.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 10: Blue Twirlin #7, 7/2):

When owner Gary Barber and trainer Mark Casse get together … there is a ton of history afoot. They team-up once again, and bring back to the GP turf this filly by Air Force Blue. Back in early November, she was not terribly impressive in an AW try in a MSW52k. Maybe the time off, some works, and a move back to the grass is in order. I sure would like to see Rafael Hernandez get on track. He is one of my favorite jockeys who regularly rides at Woodbine. Hernandez makes solid turf decisions, and can handle rating/traffic troubles like a professional Formula 1 driver. His numbers during the current Meet do not reflect his ability. This one will sure be a square price if she ends up at 7/2. What a bet on the hot pink silks of Barber & Co.!

                  Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Seguimi #2, 15/1):

Much to like with this long shot pick, who could end up north of 20/1 when this race goes off. Not only are the gelding’s odds looking favorable, but I think he has a measure of fitness too. Running up at Woodbine, he can handle the Tapeta, and the best news of all is that he is taking a major class drop. Simon Stuart is a trainer that you might not be familiar with, but do not discount his ability. I like this one’s recent work over at Palm Meadows, and he clearly gets a solid pilot in Junior Alvarado … what an unsung jockey, when compared to Ortiz or Saez!

                  Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

                  Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 6: Turf, 5F, AOC62.5k, F&M 4+):

It is time to turn and burn on the grass at Gulfstream, and this is going to be a fun one to handicap. As per usual, the difference between a 5F and 5 1/2F grass contest might seem similar, but I would argue that it is not. Looking through this field, I want a sprinter who has worked at this distance before both in competition and on the training track. Getting out of the gate cleanly, and securing a forward position is an absolute must. Based on this criteria, for my money I think that trainer Saffie Joseph’s Fouzia #4 looks best when it comes to style and form. She is a filly by Sky Mesa that can handle the distance, and likes to work out on the engine. The switch to Tyler Gaffalione is an upgrade, and his aggressive riding should be able to help this team get home, securing the victory. Let’s use this one as the “key,” and role under 3 others that can assist with the cashing of this ticket I have constructed. I particularly like … Larry Rivelli’s Richies Great Girl #3, Carlos David’s Reinagol #5, and finally, Phil Serpe’s Tiple #7. A class drop, a pair of wins at this distance, and NYRA form … those are the primary reasons for including these runners (in that order). Should be a blast to wager and watch this one go off! Who doesn’t like a turf sprint?

                  Wagering Recommendation: $2 Superfecta Wheel, 4 w 3/5/7 w 3/5/7 w 3/5/7

                        Race 6: Claiming

#6 Izshefrosted runs second off of the claim for Carrassco Jr., which usually leads to improvement. Look for this horse to be ridden for more speed today. #3 Palmgirl has been close several times at this level, and should have every chance to get the job done today.

                        Race 7: Maiden Claiming
                        freestar

#7 Gold Watch was close at this level last time out, finishing second at odds of 5/2. She will be tough in this spot. #9 Golden Rocket was a solid third in her turf debut last time out, and with improvement she should be able to get the job done today.

                        Race 8: Claiming

#6 Nothins Free has won two straight races impressively, and runs first off the claim for a solid trainer today, which means she will be tough to beat. #8 Mizzen Air drops back down to the claiming ranks today, which is where she seems to belong after winning at a similar level two starts back.

                        Race 9: Claiming

#5 Flowmotion drops back to to the level where he is most competitive today, which should make him tough to beat. He lost by a neck at this level three starts back. #10 Minnesota Lucky gets back to the turf for this race, which looks to be his best surface.

                            #14
                            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                            Penn National - Race #3
                            Picks Notes
#4 Dance a Little Jig She still has some upside with just two starts under her belt in a race where some of these have had a bunch of chances. She has shown a little bit of finishing ability and might have found the right group.
#10 Emilia Strong She is a bit better than her recent form indicates, but any way you cut it she has had 34 starts and isn't offering any real excuses. Think she can land a piece of this at a price.
#7 Meemoo She's another who has run well enough to graduate with this kind in the past, but she'll be making her 14th start without a ton of upside. The bit she does have is that she gets back around one turn for this and might wake up a bit at this sharper trip.
Race Summary I guess #11 Spill the Tea has a big claim on this while dropping in class and getting out of New York, but the form isn't anything to really write home about, and she's probably an underlay. Lightly raced Dance a Little Jig can probably land this with another small step forward.

                            Penn National - Race #5
                            Picks Notes
#5 First Forever Like that she's back in with starter company after a trio of nice scored against progressively tougher company, and she has some versatility in style that should serve her well while landing a good trip from close range.
#6 Cutefacechubywaist She was able to pass horses to score last time out, but she doesn't always do so, making her at least a little suspect while likely chasing from this outside draw today. She's a good fit if she can manage the race flow.
#3 Littlebitalily She finished behind Cutefacechubywaist when they met last time out, but she has some dangerous pace to put to use again today. That said, I wonder if this one is won from just a bit off the splits.
Race Summary First Forever should be able to track the splits with a couple of decent pace types drawn further inside, and she might offer something just playable enough as the second or third choice here.

                            Penn National - Race #9
                            Picks Notes
#11 Americano It seems like there might be just enough pace in here to set things up for a finishing score, and this guy brings that even kind of form that can sometimes translate well if a decent pace battle develops.
#2 Fuel the Bern He brings some route pace cutting back that might leave him finishing up nicely late from a bit off the pace. He has been in with better groups than this in recent starts, but both of his local tries have been dreadful stopping efforts. Interesting, but no real confidence at what is probably unappealing price.
#6 Pettinberg He seems likely to be right up on the pace in the early going, but he has given away ground late in most of the races on his page, so he's dicey late as always. Capable if he gets loose, but I'd probably want every bit of the 4-1 ML price to think about it.
Race Summary Americano should be a square price after a string of grinding efforts, and maybe that type of form plays well today in a spot with a handful of forward players with typically suspect credentials late.

#2 DANCINGTHEBIGMOVE Discount latest from second tier, finished 1-2 four times in 30-day span prior.
#8 SHE'S NO SPINSTER Kept up the chase from the pocket as pace quickened, caught 'Escape.'
Race Summary Escape Again led until the closing yards through a :57.1 back half in a split race that timed 1-2/5 seconds faster. She starts inside of the She's No Spinster, who draws post 8 after sitting a pocket trip in victory last week. Play 4-2 and 4-8 exactas.

                              Picks Notes
#8 STATE OF WIGGLES Validated troubled trip two back with improved try at this level.
#5 MS PARKLANE POWER Second best as record fell to 1-for-30.
#7 SONNETT'S HANOVER Came back running after four months away, seeks repeat.
Race Summary Sonnett's Hanover corrected her breaking habit, awakened with Lasix and beat many of the same rivals she faces again. But as the morning-line favorite from post 7, try to beat her. State of Wiggles, despite drawing post 8, is worth a shot at 8-1 after she was a half length behind 'Sonnett' at the top of the stretch and faded to third on the class drop.

                              Northfield Park - Race #2
                              Picks Notes
#4 JUST ENUF SASS Took money, ran second in both recent tries at this level.
#2 CRIME FIGHTER Solid numbers, better starting spot, gets Merriman.
#1 MAN OF FIRE No match for pocket-pulling winner, has speed and the rail.
Race Summary Just Enuf Sass finished second in her prior two starts at this level. She chased the winning favorite from the pocket two starts ago and gained some in the final sixteenth. Play a 1-2-4 exacta box.
