#6 One More Score Has been in stronger races lately and should find this class drop to his liking.
Race Summary Yes I'm a Beast has an edge in quality experience and results vs. these and from the opening strides will be the one to beat.

#8 Poiema Was a leader in all three starts and lasted for a maiden win last out; can overcome the post in a hurry.
Race Summary David's Rose should benefit from having been in good races and should be able to hold together vs. these.

Hong Kong Preview: Special M seeks a joyful win

#7 Special M can deny #3 Joyful Win a third consecutive victory in the Kowloon City Handicap (1000m, or about five furlongs) at Happy Valley Jan. 12.

Joyful Win has looked very good in his last two starts, showing blistering speed to lead all the way in both. However, he didn’t hold on by much at his most recent victory, and has a six-pound penalty and the outside barrier against him.

Chances are Joyful Win will run strongly, but his early speed could well play into the hooves of Special M., who won nicely three starts back at Happy Valley despite missing the start. And though well beaten at his next start at Sha Tin, he again put in a strong finishing run to take second behind The Runner back at the Valley a week ago.

Special M will benefit from barrier three and is proven at Happy Valley over the 1000m trip. He should be very hard to roll.

Among the runners are three horses that have just two starts in Hong Kong between them: #8 Stoltz, #5 California Forest, and #10 Gold Marquis. All are worth considering for exotics.

Stoltz was a close second to Special M on his Hong Kong debut Dec. 15. The former Australian, who won three times in his home country, should be on the speed most of the way.

California Forest, whose two victories in Ireland when known as Coill Avon included one over multiple 2021 group one winner St Mark’s Basilica, faded for fifth on debut in Hong Kong Dec. 22. He also has a nice gate of five and could get a sit behind Joyful Win.

Gold Marquis, who won two of his three races in New Zealand when known as Designer Genes, races for the first time in Hong Kong. He looked very good in New Zealand but may find 1000m a little short. The market will be a good guide to his chances.

#1 Harmony Fire drops In class and has some good claims here, especially with Zac Purton in the saddle, while #9 Heart Conquered may be better for a seven-week break since his last start.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: Dr. Ann #4, 9/2):

Trainer Gerald Bennett is having a solid Meet at Tampa Bay Downs, and his 7-yr-old mare by Eskendereya is going to get the opportunity to turn the tables on Mizzen Air #8. The last time these 2 met, Bennett’s charge was unable to secure the top spot in a claiming contest. With Sammy Camacho aboard, the team should be visiting the winner’s circle. I would not be too concerned about Nothins Free #6 … her barn does not have good numbers 1st off-the-claim. Stick with Bennett for a score!





Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Ripley Effect #10, 8/1):

In this MC event on the Tampa grass, I particularly like the look of this filly by Soldat. That sire was no War Front, but in this case, her offspring has a number of interesting points going for her. First, she already has her debut out of the way, and that tells us that there is a chance she already knows what to do around a racetrack oval … run like the dickens. Even though Kathleen O’Connell does not have strong 1st out turf stats, I think the addition of jockey Antonio Gallardo is a fabulous sign. His experience on this surface is without question. The 1st time Lasix angle is a popular one to back too … Most importantly, the price of 8/1 on the M/L looks excellent, but expect it to ratchet towards 5/1 based on the facts aforementioned.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #10 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)



Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 5: Turf, 1 Mile, ALLW27k, F&M 4+):

Tampa is known as a spot where well-known turf trainers do battle in the class ranks like MSW and OC Co. Over the years, Chad Brown and Christophe Clement have invaded, and continue to face Arnaud Delacour. When it comes to Brown’s shipper, In Italian (GB) #2, this 4-yr-old by the great Dubawi (IRE) is going to be the odds-on favorite. With a pair of races under her saddle (her debut was @TAM back in March of last yr), she gets Sammy Camacho aboard. Brown is going to win his share of turf events at the Tampa Meet, but I am hoping that this is not one of them. Sure, this filly was sharp back at Belmont on routing on the turf, but she comes back to the Sunshine State after a long break. The same critique could be offered concerning Clement’s entry, Hit the Woah #3. We have not seen this daughter of Vancouver (AUS) since the Saratoga summer. She had some up-and-down form before that. Some of it is quite classy … @GP/@BEL. Still, she probably needs a race, and that makes me want to turn to Delacour. He has an uncoupled entry in Kitten Tales #6 and World Tour #7. The latter is a former Mott runner that ran last month at this very condition on the Tampa grass. She could not control the fractions upfront, and lost the lead before the top of the lane. It would be logical to back her, since she has recency, but I do not care for her M/L price. Instead, I want to push for the ladder climber, the Florida bred filly by Kitten’s Joy. The class hike is not necessarily an issue for me, and who doesn’t like Daniel Centeno and the experience he brings to the blades? At 12/1 … hope that happens … this well-bred turfer could be a magnificent overlay, if she can rival these more tested routers. I think it can happen … here is the bet!

BetOnline has a bigger card on Wednesday with eight racecourses for wagering. There are at least two thoroughbred evening races on the schedule at Charles Town and Penn National Race Course.

The most notable track operating during the afternoon hours is probably Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. Gulfstream Park is home to the Pegasus races at the end of the month. There is a $3,000,000 Grade 1 race on the dirt and then a $1,000,000 race on the turf.

Some of the best horses in the US will be at Gulfstream Park on January 29 in Hallandale Beach. We’re heading to Florida on Wednesday, but not at Gulfstream Park. Tampa Bay is our spot on Wednesday afternoon.

We’ll get started at Tampa Bay Downs with a 5-furlong event covering 7 for a $13,500 purse. Consider a look at Castle King and Himelstein to get into the winner’s circle in Race 4.

Castle King is 2 for 19 in his career and has finished 3rd, 5th, 6th in his previous three attempts. He showed 3rd three races back on September 30 for an $11,100 purse.

In his most recent attempt, Castle King finished 6th for a $16,600 prize. After struggling there, he’s down in class to the $13,500 level on Wednesday.

Himelstein is 2 for 15 and coming off a pretty nice performance on December 26. In his most recent, Himelstein placed 2nd behind Tak by 3 ¾ lengths in a $13,500 race.

This was after a transfer from Finger Lakes to Tampa Bay, where Himelstein appears to favor these conditions. An additional furlong in distance helped plenty as well. He should be right there at the wire.

Race 5 goes a mile on the turf for a $27,000 purse. Look at Hit the Woah and In Italian to have a big showing in this one. They should be involved in the stretch run.

Hit the Woah is 2 for 15 in his career and has been running in fine enough form recently. He’s finished 1st, 6th, 7th, 2nd in his previous four outings.

Hit the Woah is 1 for 7 and needs a class drop. She won six races back on November 13 in a $80,000 race. That was impressive by 1 ¼ lengths.

Since then, Hit the Woah has mostly been participating in stakes races. In her last three, she’s gone 7th, 8th, 7th.

Hit the Whoa most recently finished 7th in the $120,000 Riskaverse Stakes on August 26. This is a big class drop and she should enjoy the easier terms.

In Italian has finished 2nd, 1st in two attempts. As a rookie, In Italian placed 2nd behind Fate of Ophelia by a neck in a $26,000 race, and then came back for a win on May 8 at Belmont Park.

In Italian defeated Flaming Rogue by 3 ½ lengths for a $90,000 prize. That was an impressive go from In Italian and the filly is down in class. She should have the edge in this form over Hit the Woah.

Race 8 is a $17,500 event covering 7 furlongs on the dirt. La Castiglione and Nothins Free should be the top runners to watch in this race.

La Castiglione is 3 for 12 with some recent success. She has finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, 6th in her last four assignments. La Castiglione won back-to-back outings on October 20 and December 1.
She won two races back by ¾ lengths over Lets Take It Izzy in a $15,600 assignment. This followed a 2 length win for a $19,000 purse on October 20.

La Castiglione fell out of form going 6th most recently on December 31 in a $27,000 race. That effort sends her back down in class.

Nothins Free is 8 for 55 and is sizing up a hat-trick winning run on Wednesday. The mare is coming off back-to-back wins on November 26 and December 23.

In the first of two wins, Nothins Free defeated Glory Roll by 4 ½ lengths for a $13,000 purse on November 26, and then followed up on December 23 with a 12 ¾ length blowout for $15,500.

A repeat of that effort would be much too good for this field. La Castiglione might threaten, but expect Nothins Free to kick free.

We’re at Tampa Bay Downs to open the day on Wednesday afternoon. Fellow Florida track, Gulfstream Park, is also active. The Pegasus is scheduled for the end of the month at Gulfstream Park. Gulfstream doesn’t look like the most attractive card today, though.

The second event at Charles Town could unfold into a duel between Dew Dat and Mosler’s Touch in the stretch.

Dew Dat is 1 for 11 in her career, finishing 2nd, 6th, 1st in her previous three attempts. She is coming off a 7 ½ length win over Signs of Jealousy by 7 ½ lengths in a $12,000 race.

Preceding that attempt, Dew Dat went 6th in a $29,700 assignment. The drop in grade helped out well, with Dew Dat likely to remain competitive on Wednesday.

Mosler’s Touch is looking for the second win of her career in her 13th outing. She beat Deemed Essential by 5 ¼ lengths in a $29,700 event on October 8.

Following that attempt, Mosler’s Touch finished 5th, 4th, 2nd in her last three attempts. In her last attempt, she placed 2nd behind Charm Weaver by 2 ¼ lengths in a $12,100 race.

Expect a competitive battle between Dew Dat and Mosler’s Touch. I will give the nod to Mosler’s Touch.

Race 8 covers 4 ½ furlongs on the dirt for a $27,000 purse. Inspiring Justice and Storm Boarder should have a chance in the stretch run.

Inspiring Justice is 8 for 26 in his career going into Wednesday. The gelding has finished 2nd, 7th, 1st in his previous three outings.

In his last attempt, Inspiring Justice defeated Upheaval by 2 ¾ lengths in a $16,000 assignment on December 2. That was a promising run for Inspiring Justice, but before that attempt, things weren’t going so well.

He finished 7th on October 23 for a $27,000 event. Back up to that grade, we’ll see if Inspiring Justice has the right form to win this time.

Storm Boarder might be too tough from the outside. He is on a massive tear with five straight wins since May 2. In his latest, he beat Stage Left by 1 length in an $18,000 race.

That win came after a win by a head for a $27,000 purse on October 23, this in the same race that Inspiring Justice finished 7th in. Storm Boarder can win and should in this class on Wednesday.

PLAY BALL - Displays formidable speed figures on average overall when matched with the rest of this group of horses in this race. Garnered a sound speed figure in the last race. TRUE CROSSING - Gelding was in versus 'open company' on December 15th and should find this group easier to deal with. Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. Getting a weight break of 9 lbs from last race at Charles Town on Dec 15th. Its possible this could make the difference right here.
