Pegasus World Cup: XBTV Expert Workout Analysis

            January 28, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

XBTV workout analysts Michelle Yu, Millie Ball and Zoe Cadman take you through the morning moves of leading contenders Saturday in the Pegasus World Cup Day main events at Gulfstream Park. Visit XBTV.com for an extensive library of workout video, available free each racing day.

Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Race 9) Workout Report // Michelle Yu

            SWEET MELANIA

            1/18/22

            Palm Beach Downs

            4 furlongs

            :48.98 (9/31)

            WATCH AT XBTV

A shade faster than her usual :50 half, she was throttled down from the go and was aching to do more. She found a happy medium down the lane with good energy and galloped out without taking a deep breath. Watching her works this month is a study in a trainer getting a horse to peak at the right time, she looks primed and ready to go.

            //

            SHIFTY SHE

            1/22/22

            Palm Meadows

            4 furlongs

            :49.50 (42/92)

            WATCH AT XBTV

Filly had a stiff, in-company work the week before (where she was bested) and finished her prep work with a relaxed, solo half-mile. Asked to quicken down the lane, she found more and stretched out with her usual low and long action.

Pegasus World Cup Turf (Race 11) Workout Report // Millie Ball

            COLONEL LIAM

            1/22/22

            Palm Beach Downs

            5 furlongs

            1:01.34 (8/15)

            WATCH AT XBTV

Defending Pegasus World Cup Turf Champ Colonel Liam had an extremely pleasing drill on 1/22 over the Palm Beach Downs surface where he's been training since early December. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. could not have willed this colt to go any slower over the 5 furlongs without disrupting his rhythm. Every time his stablemate, the graded stakes-placed Liam, crept up within breathing distance, the grey powerhouse would lean a little harder into the bridle. For this reason, I believe the shorter 1-1/8 miles distance of this year’s PWC Turf will be more ideal, as he can take a tug in the afternoon. Bringing him in fresh was the barn's plan, and judging from this work, he certainly puts enough into his training to get himself ready.

            //

            HIT THE ROAD

            1/16/22

            Santa Anita

            5 furlongs (T)

            :58.40 (1/1)

            WATCH AT XBTV

Hit the Road is due some luck. He came down with a fever the day before the Breeders’ Cup Mile and scratched. Then, due to heavy rain the San Gabriel came off the turf and again the colt was scratched. Unlike Colonel Liam, Hit the Road's 119-day freshening was not part of Dan Blacker's plan. Despite that, his colt is working better than ever. A superior work horse on the turf, on Jan. 16 Hit the Road was sharp under jockey Umberto Rispoli. What impressed me most was his ability to sustain his action and energy well beyond the wire, while working alone and having completed his final quarter in a swift :22-1/5. It's possible the deviation from his original campaign is working in his favor.

Pegasus World Cup (Race 12) Workout Report // Zoe Cadman

            LIFE IS GOOD

            1/22/22

            Palm Beach Downs

            5 furlongs

            1:00.90 (3/15)

            WATCH AT XBTV

After watching this work I'm not sure I have enough superlatives to describe it. Jaw-droppingly terrific could be one. With regular rider Amelia Green in the irons, Life Is Good set off from the pole like he meant business, and he did. At first a tad high-headed with Amelia tugging at the reins; once he hit the half-mile pole, he settled into a nice rhythm and cruised through the lane with plenty left in the tank. Actually, the best part for me was the gallop-out, all the way to the five-eighths pole. He should, if need- be, get a comfortable stalking trip outside of Knicks Go depending on the breaks for both horses.

            //

            SIR WINSTON

            1/20/22

            Palm Meadows

            4 furlongs

            :47.80 (1/46)

            WATCH AT XBTV

Given a sharpener here working in company and getting a good time. He started on the outside of his barn mate and stayed there while moving fluidly through the lane. He's a good horse and is coming into this as well as ever – while never the flashiest workhorse. Proven on dirt and will love the distance. Will be a price play “when” the speed duel ensues.

Race of the Week: Pegasus World Cup | Saturday, January 29, 2022

              January 26, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

$3 MILLION PEGASUS WORLD CUP AT GULFSTREAM PARK

              The Lead:
Since the dust settled in early November at the Breeders' Cup, the on-track buzz has been building to see a clash of elite speed among two of the event's champions. That clamor comes to fruition Saturday over 1-1/8 miles in the sixth running of the $3 million Pegasus World Cup, presented by 1/ST BET, Race 12 on a dozen-race lineup at Gulfstream Park. KNICKS GO and LIFE IS GOOD displayed extraordinary talent in separate tilts, and now racing fans and horseplayers get the chance to see them match up on the racetrack.

Horseplayers at Xpressbet and the 1/ST BET app can enjoy up to a $20 money-back guarantee on win bets in the Pegasus World Cup, World Cup Turf and Filly and Mare Turf if your selection finishes second or third. Also take advantage of $25,000 in multi-race wager hit-and-split promotions with Xpressbet and 1/ST BET.

              Field Depth:
A 9-horse field includes a pair of Breeders' Cup champions, KNICKS GO and LIFE IS GOOD, also features a Belmont Stakes winner in SIR WINSTON. Add in Grade 2 winner CHESS CHIEF, Grade 1-place STILLETO BOY and Grade 2-placed TITLE READY. The obvious standout class is KNICKS GO in terms of strength of schedule, though the talent of LIFE IS GOOD makes up for some of what's missing on his resume in comparison.

              Pace:
The heavyweights are the speed. Expect rail-drawn KNICKS GO to fire to the front (he was going to regardless of post) and for LIFE IS GOOD to be right there mixing it up with him. Horses within 3-4 lengths of them going down the backstretch are going to be in gassed mode by the top of the lane. Closers should round out the exotics.

              Our Eyes:
KNICKS GO went 1:09-4/5 in last year's Pegasus World Cup and still drew off to win by nearly 4 lengths. He has an ability to fly and re-break at the top of the stretch that you see in many Brad Cox trainees, but none to this degree. His win over the track and distance are separators with LIFE IS GOOD, who has neither raced at Gulfstream nor been beyond 1-1/16 miles. I won't make any declarative statements of superiority about the pair; cases can be made on both sides. And you get the game's two best money riders of the day, Joel Rosario and Irad Ortiz Jr. Let the slugfest begin!

Any hope of an upset relies on the fast favorites drilling each other into submission. Good luck with that complete fall-out as KNICKS GO has won 8 of his last 10 (4 straight) and LIFE IS GOOD has won 5 of 6 lifetime. The chance of both of them dueling to defeat is quite slim. As a bettor, you're hoping for 1 of 2 things in this race: first, taking just 1 of the key players and singling them in multi-race wagers, thus creating value as many players will use 2 and increase the numbers of guaranteed losing tickets to pay the winners; second, you're hoping the speed duel takes a toll on 1 of them and you can get a price closer along for second in the exacta.

Two potential exacta splitters for me are TITLE READY and SIR WINSTON. That's partly because CHESS CHIEF has been so Fair Grounds-centric in his results that he may just be a horse for course there, and STILLETO BOY figures to be too close to the pace for his own good, along with stretch-out sprinter ENDORSED. As for TITLE READY, he's fresh and his workout tab is far more lively than is normal, indicating he could be doing very well. SIR WINSTON goes for a Mark Casse barn that's firing on all cylinders at Gulfstream to start 2022 and he should have tired horses to pass in the lane.

              Most Certain Exotics Contender:
KNICKS GO hasn't missed a superfecta since coming to Brad Cox's barn and is the defending champ proven in this race.

              Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
SIR WINSTON gets the pace set-up and the barn is smoking now.

              Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
It's no picnic tossing LIFE IS GOOD, but the gamble has to be to get a major player out of the exacta.

$50 exacta part-wheel KNICKS GO over TITLE READY and SIR WINSTON.

Pegasus World Cup: Knicks Go On The Scene | Tuesday, January 25

                January 26, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

                From Gulfstream Park:

Defending Champion ‘Full of Himself’ at Gulfstream Park

*HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Korea Racing Authority’s Knicks Go was ‘full of himself’ on his first morning at Gulfstream Park Tuesday since shipping from New Orleans for a title defense in Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) presented by 1 S/T.

The Brad Cox-trained 6-year-old, widely expected to be named Horse of the Year next month, will make the final start of his career in the Pegasus World Cup, which he won last year by a dominating 2 lengths, before starting a second career as a stallion.

“He shipped in here, arrived last night about 11:30. He settled in fine last night. His temp was good. He looked good this morning walking a little bit. His energy level was really good and we decided to train him,” Cox said. “We just jogged him about a mile and a half. He went really, really good. He seemed happy, fresh and full of himself.”

Following his victory in last year’s Pegasus, Knicks Go went on to establish himself as the premier older horse in North America, finishing off his 2021 campaign with a four-race winning streak, including victories in the Whitney (G1) at Saratoga and the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar.

“We’re trying to do what we did last year with shipping from New Orleans here. We didn’t have a plane this year, but that’s all good. That’s not going to be an excuse. He’s capable of getting on a van and taking his show on the road. He did that from Ellis to Saratoga for the Whitney the week of. It’s a similar situation,” Cox said. “He certainly seems like he hasn’t regressed one step from the Breeders’ Cup. We’re in good shape.”

In this year’s Pegasus World Cup, Knicks Go, whose victories last year were accomplished with dazzling speed from gate to wire, is expected to receive a serious challenge for pacesetting duties from CHC Inc. and WinStar Farms LLC’s Life Is Good, the front-running winner of the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Del Mar.

Knicks Go will once again be ridden by Joel Rosario, who has been aboard the Maryland-bred son of Paynter in all 10 starts since he was transferred to Cox.

Jeremy Plonk: Pegasus World Cup Post Draw Reaction | Tuesday

                          January 25, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup, presented by 1/ST BET, attracted the dual headliners expected – Breeders’ Cup champions Knicks Go and Life Is Good – among a field of nine drawn this afternoon at Gulfstream Park. The Pegasus World Cup headlines a 12-race card Saturday that gets underway at 11:30 a.m. eastern and features a dozen races.

Defending champion Knicks Go begins from post 1 in pursuit of becoming the first two-time winner of the Pegasus World Cup. The front-end specialist is expected to set the pace under pressure from Life Is Good, who makes his Gulfstream Park debut and leaves from post 4. From a tactical standpoint, the rail is perfect for Knicks Go, who confidently has been directed to the engine regardless of competition.

Beyond the ‘big two,’ the Pegasus World Cup field includes 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston. He drew post 6 for red-hot local trainer Mark Casse. Sir Winston would benefit from a speed duel between the favorites as he employs a come-from-behind style. Late-running Chess Chief should save ground from post 2.

Horseplayers who utilize the 1/ST BET and Xpressbet betting platforms for Pegasus World Cup Day can take advantage of several lucrative offers. They include up to a $20 money-back guarantee on win bets that finish second or third in the Pegasus World Cup, PWC Turf or PWC Filly & Mare Turf. Also note $25,000 in Saturday Gulfstream hit-and-split promotions on bets like the pick fours and pick fives.

The Pegasus World Cup will be televised live on CNBC from 4:30-6 pm ET and include live coverage of the Pegasus World Cup Turf and a tape-delayed airing of the Pegasus World Cup Turf.

Pegasus World Cup: Sir Winston Seeks to Repeat History | Jan. 24

Sir Winston Looks to Repeat History in Pegasus World Cup
2019 Belmont Champion Aiming to Pull Off 2nd Big Upset

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Tracy Farmer’s Sir Winston is on course for a start in Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park 2-1/2 years after achieving his career highlight with a 14-1 upset victory in the 2019 Belmont Stakes (G1).

Among the son of Awesome Again’s victims in the third leg of the 2019 Triple Crown was War of Will, his more celebrated stablemate in the barn of Hall of Famer Mark Casse who was coming off a victory in the Preakness Stakes (G1) three weeks prior.

“I told people before the Belmont, ‘I think you’re missing somebody.’ I said, ‘It wouldn’t shock me if he won.’ He was doing really well,” Casse said. “I kind of feel the same way now. I think he’s really back to himself and doing really well.”

Since prevailing in the Belmont, Sir Winston, who is scheduled to take on likely 2021 Horse of the Year and defending champion Knicks Go and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Life Is Good in a star-studded Pegasus World Cup field, has experienced some rough moments. None proved more costly than a futile trip to Dubai, where the 2020 Dubai World Cup (G1) was cancelled less than a week before the race due to the burgeoning COVID-19 pandemic.

“We took him to Dubai. We were a few days from running and they cancelled the Dubai World Cup. We brought him back and it really knocked him on his rear,” Casse said. “He just didn’t come back the same horse. We ran him a few times and he didn’t run great. We just sent him home to Tracy’s farm and gave him a long time off. He’s come back and has gotten better and better.”

Sir Winston was out of action for just shy of a year but returned to the races a happier and healthier horse for a four-race campaign at Woodbine. The Kentucky homebred won an Aug. 19 allowance impressively, before finishing a close second in both the Durham Cup (G3) and the Autumn (G2). He capped off his very successful season with a victory in the 1 1/2-mile Valedictory (G3) Dec. 5.

“He got a little unlucky in a couple spots. For him to win at a mile and sixteenth, he needs to have a pretty good pace. He needs things to go his way,” Casse said. “He could have easily won a couple more last year.”

Sir Winston, who has produced a solid series of five workouts at Palm Meadows Training Center in preparation of the Pegasus World Cup, has impressed Casse with his enthusiasm during his comeback.

“It’s funny but I think he enjoys his job now more than before,” Casse said. “He’s very professional. He always has been, but he trains better, acts better. This is going to be a heck of a race. Hopefully, we can get a piece of the pie.”

Sir Winston, who has always run his best races at distances longer than 1 1/16 miles, figures to race off the early pace in the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus, well behind Knicks Go and Life Is Good, the front-running winner of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

“It looks like there will be some serious pace. Obviously, he needs a lot of things to go his way,” Casse said. “He’s feeling really well, and we believe he deserves a chance.”

Sir Winston broke his maiden Sept. 12, 2018 in his third career start following off-the-board finishes in a Churchill Downs dirt sprint and a two-turn turf race at Woodbine, scoring in a dead-heat in a mile-and-70-yard maiden special weight race over Woodbine’s all-weather surface. He concluded his juvenile campaign with a victory in the Display Stakes at Woodbine, encouraging Casse to try him on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Following out-of-the-money finishes in the Withers (G3) at Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and Blue Grass (G2) at Keeneland, Sir Winston didn’t merit a start in the 2019 Kentucky Derby (G1), but he did earn a start in the Belmont Stakes (G1) with a second-place finish in the Peter Pan (G3) at Belmont.

Although War of Will faltered in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont to finish ninth, Sir Winston stepped up to put Casse in the winner’s circle, closing from off the pace to win by a length over favored Tacitus.

Casse is hopeful that Sir Winston will be able to pull off his second big upset 2-1/2 years later in the Pegasus World Cup.

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Knicks Go tuned up for a title defense in Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park with a ‘bullet’ five-furlong workout Sunday morning at Fair Grounds.

The Brad Cox trainee, who captured last year’s Pegasus World Cup by 2-1/2 lengths, was timed in 1:00.40, the fastest of 57 workouts recorded at the distance at the New Orleans track. Exercise rider Edvin Vargas was aboard.

Sunday’s breeze was the son of Paynter’s second straight ‘bullet’ in a series of eight workouts (seven at Fair Grounds) since capturing the Breeders’ Cup Classic by 2-1/2 lengths at Del Mar Nov. 6.

Knicks Go, widely expected to be named 2021 Horse of the Year next month, is scheduled to ship to Gulfstream Park by van Monday for his final career start in the Pegasus, in which he is slated to clash with Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Life Is Good.

“He breezed good and we're really happy with him. We'll check him in the morning (Monday) and if everything is good to go, he'll be on the van and head out at 8:30 a.m.,” Cox said. “We'd like to get him there as quickly as possible; I'm thinking it will take around 13 hours. I'm flying in Monday afternoon, so I'll meet him there and we'll be ready to go.”
