Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Santa Anita for February 26, 2022
    By: Aaron Halterman

We’ve made it to the weekend, and we’ve got another loaded Saturday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the late sequence on the card. We will also have full card selections for Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s see if we can get this home today.

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

    Gulfstream Park February 26, 2022

    Race 9: Maiden Special Weight

#2 Complete Agenda was solid when stretching out in distance last time out, and should like even more distances today. #3 Montauk Point is similar to our top choice. He was solid when going long last time, and should improve today.

    Race 10: Allowance Optional Claiming
    freestar

#6 Star Seeking was a solid second at this level in her debut race in the United States, and will be tough today if she moves forward off of that effort. #1 Black Sand won nicely over the synthetic surface last time out, and should be tough once again today.

    Race 11: Claiming

#10 Spin Rate moves back to the dirt for this race, which is his best surface, while also taking a big drop down in class. #6 Meteorito was a solid second against tougher last time out, and should improve today running first time out for the Delgado barn.

    Race 12: Maiden Special Weight

#4 Vocalize was a solid third on debut last time out, and should be tough in this spot with improvement off of that effort. #6 Thistle debuts in this spot for Chad Brown, who has two first time starters you must respect in here.

Oaklawn Park Selections and Rebel Stakes Pick for February 26, 2022

      By Kyle E in Horse Racing — Feb 25th, 2022 8:04pm PST

Oaklawn Park Selections and Rebel Stakes Pick for February 26, 2022

It is $1,000,000 Rebel Stakes (Gr. 2) Day at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas. This is the biggest day on the schedule for Oaklawn Park, with the Rebel a prep race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Bob Baffert has a talented horse running in the Rebel Stakes, though as of right now, will be unable to participate.

      Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

Barring some last-minute appeal that Baffert wins, he will not be permitted to run at the Kentucky Derby. He was also recently stripped of the 2021 Kentucky Derby win with Medina Spirit. The official win goes to Mandaloun, who will be participating in the Saudi Cup.

Oaklawn Park has 12 races on the dirt worth $2,039,000 in prize money. We’re playing the Rebel Stakes and two more races on the Oaklawn card. Head below for our best Oaklawn Park picks and Rebel Stakes prediction on February 26, 2022.

The $300,000 Honeybee Stakes (Gr. 3) is the second-biggest race at Oaklawn Park on the card Saturday. Six horses are expected to participate in the Honeybee Stakes in this one.

Yuugiri and Secret Oath should have a good go in the Honeybee. Yuugiri finished 1st, 2nd, 2nd in three starts. He ran home for a $120,000 win by 7 ¼ lengths on September 17.

That was incredibly impressive for a first-time participant. The filly came back to place 2nd behind Sandstone by 10 ¾ lengths in the $200,000 Rags to Riches Stakes on Halloween.

In her next and most recent race, Yuugiri placed behind Dream Lith by 1 length in the $400,000 Golden Rod Stakes (Gr. 2) on November 27. He has to be in contention.

Secret Oath is in her best form with back-to-back wins on December 31 and January 29. She finished 1st, 5th, 1st, 1st in her last four, most recently a 7 ¼ length blowout in the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes.

Before that easy win, Secret Oath won a $120,000 allowance race on New Year’s Eve. That was too easy, too, with an 8 ¼ length win. In this current form, Secret Oath is the most dangerous runner.

      Purse:$84,000

Race 8 is an $84,000 event covering 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Western River and Quick to Blame should have a big chance to win on these terms.

Western River is 7th, 7th, 2nd in three races in his career. He finished 7th on August 15 and then came back strongly on September 3.

In his August 15 attempt, Western River finished 7th in a $51,000 event and then did better in a bounce-back spot at Ellis Park on September 3.

Western River placed 2nd behind Ready to Purrform by a nose in the same grade. Is he ready for an $84,000 assignment? Quick to Blame says no.

Quick to Blame is 3rd, 2nd, 2nd in three career races. The colt has placed 2nd in back-to-back outings at Oaklawn.

In his most recent race, Quick to Blame placed behind Ethereal Road by 4 lengths in an $84,000 event. As the favorite, more was expected in that one.

This is the same class, but Brad Box must feel confident versus a fairly weak field. I’m on Quick to Blame to be the leader at the wire.

      Purse:$1,000,000

Race 8 is the feature $1,000,000 Rebel Stakes (Gr. 1) at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. It’s a big one, with 50 points going to the winner and the grand prize of a $1,000,000 purse.

Ben Diesel and Newgrange are on my win list for the Rebel Staes. If you want a decent longshot winner, then Ben Diesel has to be on the shortlist.

He is 1st, 4th, 7th, 3rd in four races with a winning performance on October 31. Ben Diesel defeated Bourbon Heist by 3 ¼ lengths for a $120,000 purse.

He hasn’t struck since that one, but Ben Diesel had promising results on January 29 in the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (Gr. 3). Ben Diesel placed 2nd behind Newgrange by 1 ½ lengths.

Ben Diesel showed that he can run with the favorite in this race, so he must be considered. Newgrange is three for three with back-to-back Grade 3 wins.

Newgrange is coming off a win in the Southwest, noted above. Prior to this win, Newgrange had a win in the $100,000 Sham Stakes (Gr. 3) by 2 ¾ lengths over Rockefeller.

Baffert isn’t going to the Kentucky Derby, but his three-year-old colt, Newgrange, should shine in the Rebel at Oaklawn.

Scully: Spot plays for Oaklawn, Turfway Feb. 26
        James Scully

Saturday’s biggest racing will take place overseas, as the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) highlights six lucrative Thoroughbred stakes in Saudi Arabia, but Oaklawn Park will offer the $1 million Rebel S. (G2) for Kentucky Derby contenders.

I will focus my plays on Oaklawn and Turfway Park.
        Oaklawn – Race 7 (4:13 p.m. ET)

After not shipping from California, expected favorite McLaren Vale will scratch from the entry-level allowance, leaving Great Escape and Sky and Sand as the top two choices on the morning line, and an off track appears likely. #7 Ignitis ran his best race in the slop, rallying for third in the Smarty Jones S. two back, and he should appreciate the drop in class after an unplaced effort in the Southwest (G3). The D. Wayne Lukas trainee has more tactical speed than he’s displayed against stakes competition, and given the favorable draw Saturday, Ignitis should be able to race closer to the pace before offering his best.
        Oaklawn – Race 10 (5:49 p.m. ET)

#11 Plausible Denile will make his career debut in the six-furlong maiden special weight, and the Pioneerof the Nile colt doesn’t appear to be facing the toughest competition. A sibling to three stakes winners, including a pair of first-out scorers, Plausible Denile shows a five-furlong bullet work in preparation for Jimmy Divito, who does well with firsters and has a couple of wins this meet. The gray sophomore is listed at 5-1 with Geovanni Franco.
        Rebel S. (G2), Oaklawn – Race 11 (6:22 p.m. ET)

A little rank before finishing fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) last November, #7 Ben Diesel has been compromised by adverse post positions in his last two stakes attempts at Oaklawn, breaking from the far outside (post 13) in the Smarty Jones S. and the rail in the Southwest (G3). He still managed to finish a respectable third after a claustrophobic trip last time, and Ben Diesel is finally eligible to receive a favorable stalking trip here. And after being overbet in the last two, Ben Diesel should offer more value on Saturday (6-1 morning line).
        Wintergreen S., Turfway – Race 5 (8:14 p.m. ET)

Twelve fillies and mares will contest the mile feature, and a fair amount of speed appears to be signed on. #11 Natalies Charm will step up to the stakes level in top form for Tommy Drury Jr., recording a sharp 5 3/4-length score over a solid group of allowance rivals on Jan. 14, and her last-out Brisnet Speed rating (86) is on par with her main rivals. A favorable stalking trip is expected in the third start off the layoff, and Natalie’s Charm should be poised to strike turning for home.

The Jury: Bets and Fades for Feb. 26
            TwinSpires Staff

            February 25th, 2022

The TwinSpires Jury, consisting of James Scully, Kellie Reilly, Vance Hanson, and Alastair Bull, is back this week with thoughts on this weekend's action, including the Saudi Cup (G1) and Rebel (G2) cards.
            What is your best bet?

James Scully: #11 Natalie's Charm in Saturday's $100,000 Wintergreen S. at Turfway Park. The four-year-old filly brings improving form to her initial stakes appearance, crushing a solid group of allowance foes over the track and distance in mid-January, and she projects to sit a perfect stalking trip before making her presence felt in the stretch. Along with registering one of the top last-out Brisnet Speed ratings (86) last time, Natalie's Charm will be making her third start off the layoff for Tommy Drury Jr., who strikes at a 31% rate from a small sample. Natalie's Charm is listed at an enticing 15-1 on the morning line.

Kellie Reilly: The price will be woefully short, but #3 Secret Oath (3-2) should extend her winning streak in the Honeybee (G3). I'm hoping that the Arrogate filly romps again, and if she posts a time faster than the Rebel (G2), might she try the boys? After all, she is Triple Crown-nominated. What a storyline it would be for Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas to come up with another sensational filly at this stage of his career.

Vance Hanson: Given his fondness for the track and his inherent class, I'd give #9 Mishriff (9-2) a big shot at repeating in the Saudi Cup (G1). American bettors are likely to overlook him a bit with more familiar foes like Mandaloun and Midnight Bourbon (among others) in the lineup, but that could potentially be a big mistake. His post-Saudi form from last year stands up remarkably well on all counts, with soft turf generally proving his undoing in his more disappointing tries. He still looks the class of this field.

RELATED: Recent Trends in the Rebel Stakes
Who is the horse to fade?

JS: #2 Newgrange in the Rebel at Oaklawn Park. The Violence colt ran big when dictating tempo in his first two outings, but Newgrange was all out to win the Southwest (G3) after being forced to track Kavod during the early stages. That rival drew inside him again in the Rebel, and with possible speed to his outside, Newgrange appears vulnerable in my estimation.

KR: Although my skepticism about Newgrange ultimately proved wrong in the Southwest (G3), it looked pretty much right for most of the race. I'll be incorrigible, dig in my heels, and take another stand against him in the Rebel. Maybe it's foolish to oppose a Bob Baffert hotpot here, but he faces a more challenging set-up from post 2 with the speedy Kavod on the rail. His Southwest victims Barber Road, Ben Diesel, and Dash Attack are eligible to take a step forward, and stakes newbie Chasing Time could be a danger. In fact, I'd hoped that Baffert would have entered McLaren Vale in the Rebel rather than the undercard allowance (the seventh race).

VH: Given my enthusiasm for Mishriff in the Saudi Cup (noted above), it's easy, then, to suggest fading the more prominent American shippers that will offer less value. The biggest of them, of course, is #7 Mandaloun, who earlier this week was awarded the victory in the 2021 Kentucky Derby (G1). A very good horse, obviously, but he showed throughout his three-year-old campaign that he's hardly immune to being out-finished at a short price.
            What else is worth noting?

JS: Excited to see how Mandaloun fares in the $20 million Saudi Cup. Following an outstanding win in the Jan. 22 Louisiana S. (G3), Mandaloun appears set for a big four-year-old campaign, and the Saudi Cup will provide a stiff class test. A victory would fuel anticipation for future matchups against Life Is Good, who is headed to Dubai World Cup (G1) next month.

KS: I've been focused on the Saudi Cup card all week, with race previews on Brisnet.com and a blog here on TwinSpires Edge highlighting price horses of interest in all the Thoroughbred stakes. If #10 Real World (20-1) transfers his high-class turf game to dirt, he could win the world's richest race for the old-school Godolphin team of Saeed bin Suroor and Frankie Dettori.

VH: There are a couple horses on the Saudi Cup undercard that might be worth using in exotics, or as flyers in the win pool. In Race 1, the Neom Turf Cup (G3), #5 Grocer Jack (20-1) debuts for William Haggas after bringing the equivalent of more than $1 million at auction late last year. Although a bit win shy, his form the last two seasons has been quite consistent. His most honorable defeat surely was his 1 1/2-length third in the 2020 German Derby (G1) behind In Swoop, who later finished a close second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), and 2021 Arc winner Torquator Tasso. In Race 3, the Red Sea H. (G3), #5 Dubai Future (12-1) is reunited with jockey Pat Cosgrave, who's guided the six-year-old to some of his better runs on turf in the past year. He's seemingly better than what he showed in his recent Dubai prep off a two-week turnaround.

Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

              February 26, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

The feature at Hawthorne Racecourse goes in Race 2, an Open Trot with a $13,700 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 5. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

              Race 5

1-Dilly Dilly Time (2-1)-Drops to a soft spot and should relish the company. Leonard could be out and rolling to take control early in the mile.
5-Illustrate (6-1)-Has a good chance to upset if Franco provides a sharp steer. Beat #1 on 2-12 and could offer some value.

              Race 6

1-Summering (7/2)-Four-year-old comes off a nice win and now faces more experienced foes but shouldn't wilt. Has been in good form and looks like a solid play at the morning line odds.
3-Eliza Dushku N (4-1)-This is Wilfong's choice over #9 and qualified well on 2-19 but hasn't raced since 9-11. Has hit the board in 6 of 14 in Stickney and could bag a win if fires hot off the bench.
5-Rosey Time (6-1)-This will be the 3rd straight steer by Bates, and he has been aggressive both times. There isn't any real gate speed in this field except for #3 and shouldn't use much gas getting on the point.

              Race 7

1-Gregory John (12-1)-Fits with this crew and finally draws inside. Oosting should be able to hang around near the top of the stack and take a swing down the lane.
5-Solar (3-1)-Brushed to the front in an odd race in which the 1st half went in a very hot 54.4 and faded late. Willing to give another chance and will hope for a better journey.
7-Rndmnunpredictable (10-1)-Here's another who didn't get a smooth trip and finished with some life. Using at a price in a difficult race to read.
9-Louzotic (5/2)-Hasn't been able to finish but this is a soft spot. Not worthy of a tiny price from this post but should be in the hunt at the wire.

              Race 8

3-U'll Learn (3-1)-Bates picked over the 5/7 and won't be facing Open company this time. Looking for better on the drop but wouldn't want to swallow a short price.
7-My Uptowne Girl (7/2)-Beat this kind in last, loses Bates but Seekman can do the job. Could race near the top, and it's best to not overlook.

              0.50 Late Pick 4

              1,5/1,3,5/1,5,7,9/3,7

Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Workout Commentary for 2-26-22

                February 26, 2022

“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

Use (in order of preference): 1-Don’t Swear Dave; 8-Relaxed Artist; 6-Unreal

Forecast: The opener is a contentious Hillside Turf Course sprint for 3-year-olds that contains three Europeans making their U.S. debuts for winning connections. It’s a grass grab bag of sorts, so we’ll go three-deep and hope to survive and advance in rolling exotic play. Don’t Swear Dave performed better than the line will show when a willing fourth in the Pasadena S. over a mile seven days ago and is wheeled back on short rest while shortening in trip and dropping in class. This will be his fifth race of the season – kudos to the son of Connect – and while the rail post does him no favors the D. O’Neill-trained colt projects to settle within range and then have every chance from the top of the lane to the wire. Relaxed Artist has been visually impressive in workouts leading up to his U.S. debut for M. Glatt, though we suspect the son of Zoffany will need a distance of ground before showing his best stuff. He’ll be running on strongly late and may have enough quality to be dangerous under these conditions in just his third career start and his first since last June. Unreal was entered and scratched in the Eddie Logan S. in early January and then didn’t breeze for almost a month, so he’ll be making his first start since a smart maiden win sprinting on grass at Golden Gate Fields last fall. His recent work tab looks good, so this J. Wong-trained colt, with the proper stalking style for the course, merits a look at 8-1 on the morning line.

                Notable Workouts:

Almanera (February 20, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.3h TT). Grade: B
Prompted Island of Love (same time) outside down the backside, engaged workmate entering the lane and finished stride-for-stride with that one to the wire, neither one asked, final half mile in :12.1, :24.2 and :48.2, rather nice for D’Amato. Not a speed type but has some ability, probably will be most effective over a distance of ground. Seems fit.
                View Workout Video

Shut Up Michael (February 19, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.1h TT). Grade: B-
In blinkers, broke off a couple of lengths in front of Excelerina (5f, 1:01.4h TT) and finished head-and-head with that one, never really asked (workmate breezing, too, and may have been a tad best) in solid training track drill for D’Amato, final half mile in :12 flat, :24.2 and :49 flat. Expected more when unplaced in the Baffle S., may improve but needs a softer spot.
                View Workout Video

Oh Great (February 6, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.2hg). Grade: C+
European import was in gate drill with Carmen Miranda (5f, 1:00.2hg) and Memes (4f, :48.1hg) for Mullins and was always far back while lacking speed, splits of :25.1, :37.1, :49.3 and 1:02.2, not really asked much early but then appearing to pick it up a bit late. Certainly not a sprinter based on this drill, showed only fair form in England as a 2-year-old but did run well routing on synthetic in his last start overseas in August when winning a modest handicap via disqualification
                View Workout Video

Relaxed Artist (February 18, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.4h TT). Grade: B
In blinkers in training track drill for Glatt, broke off several lengths behind Just About Enough (5f, 1:03h TT) and powered on by through the lane while being asked and ridden, final three furlongs in :13 flat and :36.4, sharp in the closing stages. Was a good winner in Ireland in the spring of his 2-year-old season over seven furlongs and definitely acts like a distance-type. Decent sort of prospect, for sure.

Single: (in order of preference): 4-Big Sport

Forecast: Big Sport is a Chicago invader with speed figures that are more than good enough to win this $12,500 starter’s allowance sprint. However, It must be noted that several of these Midwest shippers from the B. Vanden Berg stable have not been able to duplicate their numbers on this circuit, and the barn’s record this meeting with similar runners is just 13-1-3-2. The veteran gelding won eight races from 10 starts last year after beginning 2021 competing at the $5,000 claiming level, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can transfer his Hawthorne form to Santa Anita. You can make him rolling exotic single but at 8/5 on the morning line in a five-runner event there probably won’t be much value to be found, so best advice might be to just sit it out.

                Notable Workouts:

Big Sport (February 9, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.2h). Grade: B-
Tied in with stablemate Fore Left (4f, :48.4h) and was second best, finishing about three lengths back at the wire, hard held early before drifting wide into the lane and flattening out late (workmate was breezing and much best, was recently claimed by this barn for $40,000). High-headed son of Kantharos didn’t look like much but we’ll assume he just wants to be let roll.

Use (in order of preference): 2-Cotopaxi; 8-Augusta Melody

Forecast: This extended grass sprint over the flat course is a challenging event in which several have similar speed figures. We’ll use two and hope that’s enough, but if you feel the need to spread deeper, go right ahead. Cotopaxi flashed improved early speed to take his foes gate-to-wire in a slightly softer starter $50,000 allowance grass dash last month while earning a number that makes him tough right back. A healthy work tab, including a bullet five furlong training track drill seven days ago, indicates he’s doing well and ready for another major effort. Augusta Melody should inherit a good stalking position outside and have dead aim and every chance from the quarter pole home. The Speightstown gelding exits a tougher race, and his numbers are gradually rising, so with just a slight forward mover today he’ll be right there.

                Notable Workouts:

                Cotopaxi (February 12, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:03h). Grade: B
Slow final time in solo training track drill for D. O’Neill but the Irish-bred gelding finished eagerly while under a nice hold and looking fine, final quarter mile in :24.2. Maintains his form.

                Single: 1-Memes

Forecast: This maiden $50,000 extended sprint attracted just five runners and appears to be an ideal spot the first-time gelding, Memes. The son of Practical Joke finished far back in a two-turn grass affair last month with a less-than-ideal trip, but in this seven furlong main track affair the P. Eurton-trained sophomore should be able to show his best stuff. A recent gate work caught the eye, so with the addition of bug boy D. Herrera and the weight break that goes with it, he’ll offer good wagering value at 4-1 on the morning line both in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

                Notable Workouts:

                Memes (February 13, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00hg). Grade: B
Much best in gate drill with Lottery Pick (4f, :47.4hg) for P. Eurton, always far in front while under very light coaxing only, splits of :24 flat, :35.1, :47.2 and 1:00 flat, quite nice for a maiden claiming type. Form isn’t much but he’s a first-time gelding and apparently improved because of it. Eligible to surface in a soft spot.

                Single: 2-Dubby Dubbie

Forecast: Let’s take a stand in this below-average $25,000 claiming turf miler In a race that should produce soft early splits. Based on our projections, Dubby Dubbie might find himself as the controlling speed without undue pressure, and given that type of trip, the J. Sadler-trained gelding could very well get brave and roll all the way to the wire. He’s been unplaced in three career starts over the local lawn but in each of those outings he faced better foes than he’s meeting today. Additionally, the veteran son of Ice Box has numbers that can win and has two easy recent breezes to have him on edge, so at 2-1 on the morning line he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Use (in order of preference):6-Ganadora; 3-Lady T; 1-So It Would Seem

Forecast: We’ll pass this six-runner maiden sprint for sophomore fillies while going three-deep in rolling exotic play. Ganadora is a Quality Road filly that brought $1 million as a yearling at Keeneland and makes her debut from a nice outside draw with a recent sharp gate workout for B. Baffert (27% with newcomers). She’s certain to get plenty of play, but there are two others that have credentials as well, so we’ll use her, but not as a single. Lady T was stakes-placed as a two-year-old and earned a big number when finishing second to Eda in the Anoakia S. while more than seven lengths clear of the rest last fall over the local main track. This extended sprint trip will compliment her closing style. So It Would Seem earned a respectable number when second in a maiden $75,000 affair in January and was claimed by J. Sadler, who protects her in a sign of confidence. She seems certain to improve but will have to in order to win at this straight maiden level.

                Notable Workouts:

                Lady T (February 12, Santa Anita, 4f, :50.1h). Grade: B-
Easy half mile solo breeze for Shirreffs, splits of :12.4, :25 flat and :50.2 while getting fit for return. Showed plenty of ability during her juvenile campaign but remains a maiden despite being stakes-placed.

Was hustled along most of the way outside High Connection (same time) while showing good speed throughout, splits of :23.3, :34.4 and :46.4 (eased up there) before coasting out five furlongs in 1:00 flat, nice work for Baffert while getting cranked for her debut. Didn’t do anything noteworthy in previous drills but definitely stepped it up here. Quality Road filly cost $1 million as a yearling and should be a live item in debut.

Use (in order of preference): 6-Tapwater; 7-Hear My Prayer; 4-Alice Marble

Forecast: Tapwater, a router most of her career, shortened to a sprint and ran very well when narrowly missing in the Las Cienegas S.-G2 down the Hillside Course last month, and in doing so may have found her niche as a late-running turf sprinter. In a race that should have enough early speed to compliment her closing kick, the veteran daughter of Tapit may be able to tag the speed close home. Hear My Prayer, an excellent third after cutting out the fractions in the same race Tapwater exits, faces plenty of speed in the presence of Bay Area shipper Dynasty of Her Own, but she is drawn outside of that one and therefore has the option to take back and employ stalking tactics. She has won that way in the past, so the veteran V. Cerin-trained mare is the likely choice and the one to beat. Alice Marble is a progressive Cal-bred with just eight career starts and room for further improvement. A solid runner-up in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint down the Hill last month, she is tackling open company today, but her speed figures suggest she has a decent sort of look. Toss her in somewhere at 4-1 on the morning line.

                Notable Workouts:

Alice Marble (February 13, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.2h). Grade: B+
Excellent work inside Rock the Belles (same time) for D’Amato, splits of 24 flat, :35.4 and 1:01 flat, never really and finishing with plenty left. Continues to improve with each race and workout and should be primed for another top effort. Handles any surface.

                Single: 5-Set Sail

Forecast: Set Sail has done everything right in the morning and looks plenty fit and ready to score at first asking in this seven furlong affair for older maidens. The son of Malibu Moon has good speed but has trained like a colt who will run on, so if he leaves with his field and avoids trouble, he certainly has the talent to handle this assignment. Listed at 5/2 on the morning line, the R. Mandella-trained sophomore offers strong wagering value at or near that price in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

                Notable Workouts:

                Vittoro (February 20, Santa Anita, 4f, :47.3h). Grade: B-
Caught him from the half mile pole to the wire with splits of :11.4, :23.3 and :48.1, a few ticks slower than given while finishing a length behind Martini Mischief (same time), never asked but second best (workmate breezing, too). Not bad but was hoping for a bit more. Finished fourth in his debut but it wasn’t much of a race.

                Elector (February 19, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01h). Grade: B-
Asked mildly late and finished okay in solo drill for Sadler, final quarter mile in :25 flat. Had nightmarish trip in debut and probably deserves another chance vs. older maidens.

Set Sail (February 18, Santa Anita, 7f, 1:25.3h). Grade: A-
Caught him from the half mile pole out to the seven furlong pole in a terrific solo move by maiden in Mandella barn, splits of :24 flat, :48.2 and 1:00.3, strong throughout and with plenty left late. Very good prospect by Malibu Moon, seems fit and ready and will be hard to beat first time out.

Use (in order of preference): 9-Mo Them Down; 6-Disko Tribute; 3-Awesome Rhythm

Forecast: Mo Them Down has been a massive disappointment – at least to those who have knocked him down to odds-on in his last pair – but with the removal of blinkers and as a first-time gelding the son of Mohaymen seems certain to attract plenty of support again in this maiden $50,000 turf sprint. He gets a break in the weights with the switch to bug boy D. Herrera and could easily wire this field if he can produce in the afternoon the same type of energy he shows in the a.m. Disko Tribute is bred for grass (Tom’s Tribute) and has done some decent work at San Luis Rey Downs. It’s an educated guess but we suspect this gelding can run some, so we’ll toss him in. Awesome Rhythm is a first-off-the-claim play for P. Aguirre (solid stats with this angle) and has every right to improve after finishing a reasonable third after a slow start in his debut. He’s up from the maiden $30,000 ranks but should be competitive at this level.

                Notable Workouts:

Mo Them Down (February 13, Santa Anita, 4f, :50.4h TT). Grade: B+
Went without blinkers, was always breezing while finishing about three lengths clear of Nothngoodcomseasy (same time) for O’Neill, final three furlongs under wraps in :37.3. Burned a ton of money in his last pair and isn’t one to trust but continues to impress in the morning and was recently gelded. Seeking another maiden claimer.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Rainbow 6 Ticket Saturday at Gulfstream

                  February 26, 2022 | By Jerry Shottenkirk

Saturday is a mandatory Rainbow Pick 6 payout day at Gulfstream Park, and it’s every bit the challenge you’d expect when trying to string together a half-dozen winners in races 7-12.

The Rainbow Pick 6 has a 20-cent minimum wager, but on days like this is can add up in a hurry. Searching for a single is an extreme challenge today as most of these events are wide open.

The suggested ticket amounts to $86.40, and he’s a look:

                  7th Race (3:01 p.m. ET, starter allowance)

UNPRECEDENTED has a slight edge, but not enough to jump all-in on him. As with five-furlong races, this is loaded with individuals all set on getting the lead.

He has enough early run to keep an inside position and could benefit from taking the shortest way home. This is a difficult race that could go several different ways.

Also on the ticket: AWESOME ANYWHERE, RECONFIGURE, SMOKIN RICHIE.

                  8th Race (3:33 p.m. ET, claiming)

IMPRESSIVE SPEED has been mostly on Tapeta lately, but his only win occurred on turf at Woodbine. He fired a decent third on the all-weather in his first Gulfstream start, and he does his best in a stalking situation and can benefit from saving ground. His win came at two turns and the 7.5 furlongs of this one could be an ideal distance.

Also on the ticket: MEAN MACHINE.

9th Race (4:05 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

BOURBON HEIST finished with interest in his pair of two-turn races, including fourth and second at Churchill Downs. Has enough speed to be where rider Edwin Gonzalez wants him to be and has enough punch to be effective at this 1 1-8th-mile distance. The longer run to the first turn gives him the opportunity to make up for the outside draw.

Also on the ticket: MONTAUK POINT, PIONEERING SPIRIT.

10th Race (4:37 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

APPLECROSS ran well off an eight-month vacation and was getting to the leaders late in the game. He was third beaten by a neck in his first attempt for Bill Mott after a change from Richard Baltas, and he’s been a decent late runner going this distance.

Has a good closing move but he’ll have to find a way through traffic, which is not always easy in mile turf events.

Also on the ticket: STAR SEEKING, QUEEN BOURBON.

                  1
                  1th Race (5:10 p.m. ET, claiming)

SPIN RATE is long overdue to get career win No. 2, and he’s in a good spot for it. He was fourth at a higher left the last time he was
on dirt and has tactical speed and can mix it up whenever it’s time to go.

                  Also on the ticket: METEORITO.

12th Race (5:43 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

VOCALIZE was third going five furlongs in his first career start and is a natural for stretching out to a mile. Wasn’t as sharp at the break and he needed to be but finished well against some talented young runners. Can benefit from having had that start and should move up with the distance.

Also on the ticket: GROWTH CAPITAL, THISTLE.

Gulfstream Park 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6:
                  7) #3 Unprecedented, #5 Awesome Anywhere, #6 Reconfigure, #9 Smokin Richie.
                  8) #2 Impressive Speed, #5 Mean Machine.
                  9) #3 Montauk Point, #8 Pioneering Spirit, #10 Bourbon Heist.
                  10) #5 Applecross, #6 Star Seeking, #10 Queen Bourbon.
                  11) #6 Meteorito, #10 Spin Rate.
                  12) #3 Growth Capital, #4 Vocalize, #6 Thistle.
                  The ticket: 3-5-6-9 with 2-5 with 3-8-10 with 5-6-10 with 6-10 with 3-4-6 ($86.40)

                    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                    Fair Grounds - Race #3
                    Picks Notes
#1 Funkylittleshack She has faded in both career tries, but she may still have some room to improve and might be able to find the front with this bunch. Still think she'll find something better to offer sooner than later.
#8 Delta Traveler She's the most likely winner in here, but it's tough to love her at what is likely to be a pretty short price in her 11th career start. She should get a fine trip from close range from this draw, but she typically finds one or two who are too good for her.
#4 Shesabeautydancer She went evenly in the debut run and will need to turn the tables on the chalk, but she might bring a better run with that debut try under her belt. Interesting enough.
Race Summary Funkylittleshack is one of many who will need to improve to get the best of Delta Traveler, but he has a little bit of pace and might be able to have a go of it early here. Maybe he gets brave at a price?

                    Fair Grounds - Race #8
                    Picks Notes
#7 Order for Porky Think this guy is worth a little swing, as he has some versatility and can adapt to whatever race flow presents itself into the first turn. He has some decent back turf efforts that would make him interesting here.
#4 Firewater Jake He has good tactical pace and should be able to land a good trip right near the top, but he has been settling for a lot of underneath shares in recent starts, and he might be useful in the gimmicks again here.
#3 Big Agenda He brings that good back class with him, having run second in stakes company here last year, and he appreciated the drop into a cheaper spot last time out when turning in a score. Worry he's a bit overbet in a tough race.
Race Summary Order for Porky ran pretty well on the Pimlico turf last year, and he brings good form with him while moving back to the turf in search of a third win in a row. Guessing he's an okay mid-range price.

                    Fair Grounds - Race #9
                    Picks Notes
#10 Sayanotherprayer She woke up last out with the best effort of her career, and she might be able to spy a pretty decent pace in here with a few fairly committed forward players signed on. Think she has a chance to grind this one out.
#4 Cosmic Belle She's still lightly raced and probably has a small bit of upside with just two starts, and she proved a really good fit last out when trying the level for the first time. Think she's one of the obvious ones.
#7 Both Ours Would still love to see this runner who is by Half Ours o/o a City Zip mare get on the turf sometime, but she has been heading in the right direction in those last two starts, and she can probably stick around a long time here.
Race Summary This race gets a really solid 49 Betmix Longshot Score, and there might be enough pace in this cheap spot to set things up for a finisher from a bit off the splits. Sayanotherprayer might get an okay go of things while tracking some quicker runners, and maybe she has a move into the lane in her that gets her home at a price.

                      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                      Northfield Park - Race #2
                      Picks Notes
#5 FADE TO GOLD Rallied first-over to finish third, takes magnified class drop.
#2 GATORS BEN WINNING Dueled first-over a long way, good recent form, good price.
#4 ARROYA'S DANCE Inherited pocket at 3/4-pole, out-kicked late off layoff.
Race Summary Fade to Gold rallied behind the 3-to-1 winner at a notch above and meets several new rivals who exited a race in which the 1-to-5 favorite broke stride. Her class should shot in this spot, so bet to win and place.

                      Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #4
                      Picks Notes
#8 WIND BLOWN Took aim off cover, trotted evenly in lane before late surge between.
#3 POSEIDON SEELSTER Blew clear stretch lead in Preferred company, then was scratched last week.
#1 NO PLAN INTENDED Late kick has produced 1-2 finishes in half of his 30 starts.
Race Summary Wind Blown picked up cover in a lively outer flow, tipped 3-wide for the stretch drive and finished willingly in the middle of a seven-horse blanket finish. He draws outside again but retains betting value on the class hike. Play a 1-3-8 exacta box.

                      Hawthorne - Race #4
                      Picks Notes
#7 MAGGIE RHEE Loomed boldly in repeat bid, flattened out late, can make amends.
#5 IT'S TIME FOR FUN Full of run in stretch traffic two back, buried lesser in follow-up try.
#8 SEVENTIMESACHARM Hard hitter changed tactics from this post, rallied for second,
Race Summary Maggie Rhee, flushed out near the half, advanced steadily while first-over until she flattened out in the final 50 yards as the odds-on choice. She remains the one to beat in her third start this year. Play 7-5 and 7-8 exactas.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #4
                        Picks Notes
#1 Milliken Performed well in Kentucky and most recently was third in an allowance at Churchill; has some late pop in sprints.
#6 Reinvestment Risk Was third last time when he came off a 14-month vacation; was second in the Champagne and Hopeful as a 2-year-old in 2020.
#5 No Que No Doesn't have the class of the top two choices but has good speed and looks suited for the distance.
Race Summary Milliken ran well last year and has a good chance to carve out a good trip in his return; clearly talented.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #5
                        Picks Notes
#4 Fillmore East Lost a photo last time out on the Tapeta and looks like the one to hold off in this dash.
#1 Gregs Posse Was along for fourth last time and takes a drop in class from that one; potential late mover.
#6 She's Classy Finished well in her last three and was claimed out of his latest by Yanez; can be a factor from the start.
Race Summary Fillmore East came close last time out and can dig in when challenged in the stretch.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #6
                        Picks Notes
#3 Crazy Beautiful Has won six of 14 starts (11 times on the board) and has trained well for her first second the G3 Comely at Aqueduct in November; if there's a time to have the best chance to upset Letruska, this is probably it, although it's a long way from a simple task.
#6 Letruska Gave way after pressing some sizzling fractions and had little left for the finish of the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff; she's taken 17 of 23 and will be heavily favored. Could have some early company, and that's the best chance for this field to score a upset over this odds-on betting choice.
#7 Helping Lisa D Won a handicap here two races back and could be along for a minor award.
Race Summary Crazy Beautiful has the best chance of any of these to post an upset over the mighty Letruska. She finished 2021 with three on-the-board finishes and has worked well for her return. The 4-year-old season could be a very good one for the Liam's Map filly, and this could get it off to a great start.

COMMENTS: BREEZE RIDER is 3/4 a length from winning six of her last seven races. ALYDIVA has two wins and a second in three at Turfway Park. WAIT FOR NAIROBI should be better in her second start off the bench. NATALIES CHARM won her last by 5 3/4 lengths and could improve in her third start after a layoff.
