Today’s Gulfstream Park Hot List races to watch
    Thursday, March 3, 2022

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
    Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
    * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (8) Act Like Artie (B) broke through the starting gate then led until the final furlong. Can make amends for that loss here. (2) Panotti won her last two and may emerge as the key rival. (1) Katz a Dream was a good second last time and cannot be ignored. (7) Lido Key seeks a third straight win and cannot be ignored. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-8.

3rd race – (3) Kimari didn’t fire in the Breeders’ Cup but can start 2022 on a winning note. (1) Union Maiden should benefit from a rail trip after racing wide last time. (2) Fire On Time may enjoy a switch to turf. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3. Doubles: 1-2-3 with 2-3-5-6.

4th race – (5) Especiallea makes his debut for Gargan after a claim and can handle this field. (2) Superposition comes off a nice maiden win and will be a factor here. (3) Royal War drops a notch and fits in well here. (6) Skywalking should be a stretch threat here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5. Exactas: 2-5 over 3-6 and 3-6 over 2-5.

7th race – (3) Famous Gent drops off the Joseph claim and should prove best in this field. (7) No Commission steps up after a claim by D’Angelo and looks dangerous in this spot. (10) Bee by the Sea could be a contender at this level. (2) Loyal Louie is in good form and is worth a look here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-7-10. Doubles: 2-3-7-10 with 1-3-4-7.

8th race – (1) Liam’s Kiss (C) was bet down from 7-2 to 5-2 and posted a solid maiden win. Looks good in her first try against winners. (3) Nostalgic will welcome a return to the main track. (7) Myfavoritedaughter has a nice turn of speed and could be tough to catch. (4) Princessofthenorth should be factor while switching to dirt. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3. Exactas: 1-3 over 4-7 and 4-7 over 1-3.

Top Horse Racing Picks for Thursday, March 3, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

For my Thursday horseracing choices, I uncovered a good mix of favorites, underdogs, and outright sleepers at Charles Town Races, Sam Houston Race Park, and Turf Paradise.

You’ll find the favorites at Sam Houston and Charles Town, the latter of which also yields an 8/1 sleeper, as does Turf Paradise.

Don’t forget that you can review the full race-cards for each of the three tracks at our best horseracing wagering sites.

            Good luck!
Thursday Picks for Charles Town Races

Let’s start on the dirt track with race two, a 6-1/2 furlong claiming race for West Virginia-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. I’m going with the 7/5 morning-line favorite: Cherokee Castle, piloted by Wesley Ho.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money four of her five career starts, winning one. In this inexperienced six-horse field, she looks least likely to fail.

Cherokee Castle is trained by owner Ronney W. Brown, who put Ho in the saddle for Cherokee Castle’s maiden victory in December.

Race six is a 1-1/8 miles claiming race for four-year-olds and upward that have not won a race since September 3, 2021. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Gio Dude, ridden by Carlos Eduardo Lopez.

This seven-year-old gelding has a slight statistical edge over the favorite—as well as the rest of this eight-horse field—with a record of 25 money finishes in 43 career starts, nine of them wins.

Michael E. Jones, Jr. trains Gio Dude for owner Carlos Lee.

Race seven is a 4-1/2 furlong claiming race for four-year-olds and upward that have not won a race since September 1, 2021. I’m calling this one for the second-favored (at 2/1) Strong Like Bull, with Gustavo Larrosa in the irons.

Compared to the rest of this ten-horse field, this ten-year-old gelding has the stats to win this race in a walk: 20 money finishes in 32 career starts, with 15 wins, including the Immortal Eyes Overnight Dash Stakes in 2019 here at Charles Town.
And Strong Like Bull isn’t resting on his laurels—he moneyed six of his eight most recent starts, winning five. He’s got this.

Sherry L. Jackson trains Strong Like Bull for owner Devin D. Walker. Jackson chose Larrosa to saddle Strong Like Bull for his most recent win in January.
Thursday’s Picks for Sam Houston Race Park

We start on the dirt track with race six, a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for three-year-old fillies. I like the 9/2 third-favored entry in this race: Half Page, ridden by Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez.

This filly moneyed both of her career starts, winning her initial maiden attempt in December at Remington Park, then finishing second in an allowance race here at Sam Houston in February.

Thirty-year horseracing veteran Jaime Castellanos trains Half Page for owner Darrell W. Bravenec.

Let’s go to the turf course for race seven, a one-mile allowance race for Texas-bred four-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 4/1 second-favored Silver Luke Silver, piloted by Jansen Melancon.

This seven-year-old gelding moneyed 24 of his 38 career starts, winning four.

I’d agree that on the face of it, those numbers don’t inspire confidence, but I’d also counter that Silver Luke Silver moneyed his last ten races, and—unlike the favorite—has won a race since 2020.

Amanda Barton trains Silver Luke Silver for owner Henry S. Witt, Jr.

We’re back on the dirt track for race eight, a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. I hope the morning-line favorite wins this race, but I’m not counting on it.

Instead, I’m buying a win ticket on the 10/1 underdog, Doctor Leo, with Carlos Montalvo in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding finished seven of his 12 career starts in the money, with four of them wins—almost identical to the record of the favorite, Collusion Illusion.

Now, Collusion Illusion’s five wins were his maiden graduation and four graded stakes races that included the Lazaro Barrera Stakes (Grade III) and the Bing Crosby Stakes (Grade I). That’s right: Back in 2020 he was regularly posting triple-digit speed figures and bringing home six-digit paychecks.
But Collusion Illusion failed to money a race in 2021, and he finished dead last in his single 2022 start, the King Cotton Stakes (Listed). Like I said, I hope he wins this race, but I don’t expect it.

Back to reality. Jaime Castellanos trains Doctor Leo for L and G Racing Stables.
My Thursday Picks for Turf Paradise

We’ll start with race two, a one-mile allowance optional claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. My money’s on the 7/2 second-favored Big Andy, with Karlo Lopez aboard.

This four-year-old filly finished six of her 14 career starts in the money, winning three—two of which she’s won in the last three months.

Robertino Diodoro trains Big Andy for owner Charles Garvey. Diodoro tapped Lopez to saddle Big Andy for her most recent win, a turf race in late January.

We move to the turf course for race five, a 7-1/2 furlong allowance race for four-year-olds and upward that have never won four races or have never won on turf. I’m buying a win ticket on the 8/1 sleeper, Provost, ridden by veteran jockey Glenn W. Corbett.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 15 career starts, winning four, giving him a statistical edge on the morning-line favorite, as well as on the rest of this eight-horse field.

Jack McCartney trains Provost for owners Harry Richardson and Perry Ray.

Moving back to the dirt track for race six, a A5-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 7/2 second-favored entry, Holy Tutta Bella, with Glenn W. Corbett in the irons.

This four-year-old filly moneyed two of her four career starts, winning one—her initial maiden attempt. She notably finished fifth in the recent Bell Of The Ball Overnight Stakes here at Turf Paradise in December.
Holy Tutta Bella has consistently posted solid speed figures during her brief career, and that steadiness has translated to a better statistical record than that of Smiling Spirit, the morning-line favorite.

Stacy Campo trains Holy Tutta Bella for owner John J. Campo, III. Stacy tapped Corbett to saddle Holy Tutta Bella for the Bell of the Ball Overnight Stakes run.

DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, March 3, 2022
              DRF StaffMar 02, 2022

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:05 GP 1st Looking for DESTINIQUE (#3, 6-1) to run well first off the claim for the Drexler barn, which continues to be productive in its first-ever go-round at Gulf; Munnings filly has the kind of kick that may be enough at this level, especially if she can get a good inside trip under the underrated E.Gonzalez. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:35 GP 4th Regrouped by Gargan after being claimed out of more difficult races in Maryland, ESPECIALLEA (#5, 4-1) scarcely could have found a much softer spot than this $12.5k race for N2L synth routers; his turf form isn't all that encouraging, but yeah, he might well return from the freshening with a new attitude. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:24 TUP 4th JOKER MATT (#1, 6-1) tried a tough 6 1/2 furlongs in his debut and ran evenly after being far back early. For a debut, that was actually OK. He tried a flat mile in his second start and simply ran better when 2nd at 7-1. Second time routing can only help and this colt draws inside which helps with a forward approach. This jock is riding quite well. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:59 TUP 5th HARD TO DENY (#5, 5-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:08 GP 9th Looking for HOF jock to hustle Z FIRST (#11, 10-1) out of there and quickly offset the potential ground loss as this Mr. Z filly stretches out from a sprint she surely needed; call for a mild upset in what shapes up as a wide-open finale. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:31 TUP 6th MONGOLIAN ROSE (#6, 8-1) might trip out best as there is a lot of speed in this race. This filly has some upside and seems to like this dirt. Form cycle hints at better as this filly goes third off the layoff. This horse has improved her Beyer in every start after her debut. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:40 WBS (Harness) 9th JUST DAISY (#5, 5-2) paced a 25 4/5 kicker in her return race and could do no better than fifth, which tells you all you need to know about how she was hamstrung by the dawdling pace. She does her best work racing up front and I expect her to blast this time; top call. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

Sam Houston Picks: Is Collusion Illusion the pick on March 3?
                By J.N. Campbell

Sam Houston Race Park Picks - Thursday, March 3, 2022

                Race 1: 3-4-7-1
                Race 2: 7-2-4-6
                Race 3: 4-7-6-2
                Race 4: 3-2-7-4
                Race 5: 2-6-4-8
                Race 6: 6-5-3-11
                Race 7: 7-3-9-2
                Race 8: 6-3-7-4
                Race 9: 3-7-5-6
**Most Likely Winner: Causeway Storm #3 (Race 9)**
**Best Value: Catchusifyoucan #6 (Race 6)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 9: Causeway Storm #3, 7/2):

On the Connally lawn last time out, this gelding by Preferred Issue tried the turf for the 2nd time in his career. It wasn’t a total wash because he did end up 3rd. That was against a tough short-priced favorite trained by Robertino Diodoro, named Whiskey Over Ice. Now, returning to the grass, Kevin Scholl’s entry will take on another rival from that race, King Kongo. I believe that Scholl’s budding turfer deserves another shot, and the real question is … can he exhibit a strong turn-of-foot at the top of the lane? If he can, then he has a great chance at a square price. Jockey Richard Eramia has some sodbusting skill … let’s go for it!

                Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Catchusifyoucan #6, 20/1):

Betting a horse off-the-bench is a risky business, but sometimes you can find one that makes a good bit of sense. Looking at the totality of a field, instead on a given horse, can help you can perspective. In the OC50k Division, many are going up, coming down, or maintaining … speaking of class that is … What is particularly difficult is when you break your maiden at the MSW level, and then summarily leap into a tougher group like this one. I don’t really trust any of the ones that have already been here, so that’s why I am backing a runner like Bret Calhoun’s 3-yr-old filly. She showed promise at Lone Star last year as a freshman, then during the summer went to Churchill, running in a “BT” race that was out of her scope. Now, after a chance to mature over the winter, plus a work tab under her, she comes into this spot. She is going to be a massive price, but could catch this group napping with Jose Alvarez in the irons. Calhoun has a strong reputation as a conditioner, and his charge gets 1st time Lasix … another plus. Bet this one, who possesses the best sprinting name possible!

                Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, AOC50kn2x, 4+):

Every year, Sam Houston gets a visit from an “out-of-towner” that at one time or another was a budding star elsewhere. Collusion Illusion #3 is just such a runner, and it was not all that long ago that this son of Twirling Candy was competing in “Graded” Co. Back in 2020 when he was running for Mark Glatt, he won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby S. at Del Mar, and competed in the BC Sprint (G1) at Keeneland. A venerable competitor, the now-5-yr-old is in the barn of Greg Tracy. Ownership, which includes MyRacehorse, wanted to make a switch, and they did. I am going to take a stand against this Florida bred because I am much more interested in Frank Lucarelli’s Bobby Brinkley #6. This is a gelding that the Northwest-based trainer ran at Lone Star, Remington, and Sam Houston in 2020 through 2021. A Texas bred, he then sent him to Emerald Downs in Oregon for a pair of “Non-G” events. By Shanghai Bobby, he can handle the dirt or the turf, and this specific sprint should suit him well. The addition of Stewart Elliott makes this one an even better deal. If I could get 15/1 … I am hoping … then Lucarelli’s speedster is a significant overlay. He is not in for a tag, and of course, most of the betting attention will be focused on Tracy’s latest acquisition. A nice ice-cold Exacta sounds like a plan to me!

                Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 6 w 3

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds for March 3, 2022
                  By: Aaron Halterman

It’s another Thursday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park today, which has a solid card. We will also be covering Fair Grounds for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. We’ve been hot lately, so hopefully we can keep it up! Let’s kick off the week in a good way!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                  Gulfstream Park March 3, 2022

                  Race 6: Starter Optional Claiming

#1 Joe Di Baggio gets back to the starter allowance ranks, which is where he is most dangerous. #3 Brasstown always shows up with a consistent effort at this class level, and today should be no different.

                  Race 7: Claiming
                  freestar

#3 Famous Gent has been solid over this surface, and runs first off the claim for Saffie today, while also dropping down in class. #2 Loyal Louie will look to make it two in a row after beating tougher horses last time out.

                  Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Nostalgic gets back to the dirt for this race, while also taking a nice drop down in class after taking on stakes company. #1 Liams Kiss will look for her second straight victory after a nice maiden win over this track last time out.

                  Race 9: Maiden Claiming

#1 Swoonatra moves over to the turf for this trace, while also dropping down in class, which should improve her effort. #2 Tizmet also takes a class drop here, and should be the horse on the lead today, which could “lead” to an upset.

                  THE TICKET

                  $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 1,3,6,7 / 2,3 / 1,3,5,7 / 1,2,9 – $48

                    Today’s Racing Tips – March 3rd

There are 5 meetings on a busy Thursday in Britain and Ireland, with three NH cards the highlight from Clonmel, Ludlow and Taunton. The all-weather action is competitive as usual, with Newcastle in the afternoon and Southwell in the evening under lights.
                    Today’s Daily Nap

                    Hidor de B’ersy

                    Ludlow 1:30 pm

Tom Symonds bumper winner shaped really well on his hurdling debut at Carlisle when second behind the high class Nurse Susan, and had little trouble getting off the mark over hurdles at a short price at Fakenham 61 days ago. He remains with plenty of scope to keep on improving (will make a cracking chaser next season), and has been found a terrific opening here to defy a penalty.

                    Odds: TBD
                    Today’s Value Angle

                    Glimpse of Gala

                    Ludlow 2:30 pm

Charlie Longsden’s mare has held her form at a decent level all winter, and she shaped really well under a negative ride over this course and distance 42 days ago (dropped out last initially and unable to sustain smooth headway). A more positive ride is on the cards now from the 7lb claimer Bradley Roberts, and she will relish the decent ground expected back at Ludlow on Thursday.

                    Odds: 6.50

Odds are best odds available as at 4pm March 2nd 2022. Odds may now differ.

Harness Racing: Picks and Horses to Watch March 3-6
                      Frank Cotolo

More Mohawk winter series are on tap for the weekend and we have collected more contenders for specially selected features. The never-ending TwinSpires’ horses-to-watch list (H2W), which brought to the toteboard 53% of its picks, shares live entries to success in your exotic and win, place and show payoffs.
                      MOHAWK MILES
                      Thursday, March 3

Each week we highlight some probable long shots from Mohawk Park. If they do not win at first crack we add them to the H2W the following week as bet-backs or in selected features, adding new possibilities to this section.

Race 1 – Tymal Tiggs: Qualified with a win which could repeat itself for money.
Race 5 – Lyons Princess: Some good energy in the stretch to finishing fourth.

                      FEATURES
                      Thursday, March 3

Mohawk, Race 9 - ONTARIO GIRLS

The Ontario Girls pacing series, leg two, presents a bet-back spot for Just Daisy. Given stronger support than we thought, she was 8-5. However, she did not start well and cannot be dismissed for her performance in leg one. She may go off at a higher number here.
Bottomoftheninth finished third, racing better than the public’s 6-1 offering, and returns here with a better profile.
                      Friday, March 4

Mohawk, Race 8 - ONTARIO BOYS

The $43k Ontario Boys Pacing Series Final (four-year-olds) is a bet against a one-two-three finish as was last week’s leg. This week, Mustang Beach needs to be more aggressive and will be our minor upset choice for price and purpose. His dead heat last week with Hesincontrol may have been a surprise even to him and since the latter had a tougher trip he could catch them all. This pair is the key to some prices across the board and in exactas if they finish one-two.

                      Hawthorne, Race 8

Perseus Seelster is in a great spot to win his first race this year at the seventh attempt after scoring a sharp place finish. He stays in this class with better earnings than some which have won already this season. He is one of two here trained by Nicole Agosti and her other, Feeling Like A Ten, should be the public choice. This looks a good boxed exacta with the best payoff going to Perseus Seelster on top.
                      Saturday, March 5

                      Pocono, Race 3

Shipping from Rosecroft, Cyrus Peak beat a field of nine in a state-bred preferred conditioner. Trainer Eli Scott, Jr ships him to the mountains to go in the track’s Game of Claims series with all good intentions against a group that he should have no problem defeating.
Father Sarducci will challenge and the crowd may overrate him against the shipper but he will be good for single- and multi-race exotics with Cyrus Peak.

                      Meadowlands, Race 7

An outside contender, Heza Real Diamond can benefit from the obvious choices in this race. Toss out last week’s mile—he had no chance from the beginning and still made up some precious ground. Trainer Edwin Quevedo’s horses are resilient at a price and he has another great possibility here.

For exactas and triples, two good partners able to blow the payoff into the clouds are Bobcat Bay and Ocean Ridge N. The former can smile home late from the 10 hole and the latter is a Dylan Davis shipper, always a threat.

                      Horses to Watch

Review our choices and confirm the wagers available at the prescribed track. H2W offers possible contenders researched from reviewing races. Horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track with the date of their race and the race number (R6) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name, it appears on the list for the second time (horses are listed twice only if, at first, they failed to win. An “ae” signals also-eligible. Types of wagers to make are based on your judgment.

                          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                          Fair Grounds - Race #4
                          Picks Notes
#5 Path to Success He woke up last out when dropped in for half this price, and he'll probably go off at a decent number today on the rise while moving back to the grass. He might be worth another look on the lawn against this kind.
#8 Mr. Cunningham He proved a really good fit when trying this level for the first time, but he has given away ground in the stretch call of all six career races, so I don't entirely trust him to stay on at what will be a shorter price than last time around.
#6 King Tuff He was moving well enough late when passing horses for fourth in that first start with maiden claiming company, and he seems logical enough right back. He benefits if a couple of the forward players hook up early.
Race Summary Path to Success woke up when trying cheaper company last time out, but he might still be a reasonable fit while stepping up off the claim. Hoping he transfers the form while getting back to the turf.

                          Fair Grounds - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#6 Here Comes Kyle Think you can go a few different ways in this one, but he might offer another playable number while back with some similar competition. He might get the right trip while finishing into the splits.
#10 Spectrolite Might be worth giving him one more look in this third start off the layoff, as it isn't like he's been overmatched with the local company in the past. He'll have to hold up on solid splits to land this, but maybe he sticks around at a price today.
#8 Just Blaze Can't really argue with any of the recent turf form, but I worry he'll be a touch overbet in a race that appears to have several win contenders in it. Think it's worth trying to find a bit better price among the logical types.
Race Summary Here Comes Kyle should get another decent setup today, and he didn't miss by much last time out when facing many of these. Would be happy to take him as something like the second or third choice on the board.

                          Fair Grounds - Race #8
                          Picks Notes
#5 Rumble Ready He has run well in some of those recent sprint efforts, but the pedigree suggests he should be able to get around two turns at this trip, and he might be in line for a perfect run of the race while spying the speed from close up.
#10 Lord Zed All signs point to the fact that he should be tough here as he moves around two turns while making the second start out of the dangerous Cox barn. Maybe the trip is just tricky enough from out wide? He's probably too short of a price, too.
#3 Harmon Killer Brew He was much better in that second career turf try, and I wouldn't put it past him to transfer a good effort like that back around two turns with this bunch. More likely underneath.
Race Summary Rumble Ready should trip out from close range while trying two turns, and the hope is Lord Zed takes just a bit too much cash for top connections while making a logical stretchout move.

                            Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
                            Picks Notes
#5 TYMAL TIGGS Need not be much to win at first asking, final qualifier encouraging.
#1 WHOLE NINE YARDS Often rallies for minor awards, need some pace help.
#3 CURRENT DANGER Has win on resume, good form with Henry in bike and close-up ability.
Race Summary Tymal Tiggs wore trotting hopples for the first time in his qualifying win and has little to beat in his debut. Hoping the equipment change is a sign of more good things to come. Play a 5/1,3/ALL trifecta.

                            Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #9

#5 JUST DAISY Took serious money, victim of poor race shape, today's Best Bet.
#1 AWESOME HILL Versatile, loves to win, can pad $100k bankroll from rail.
#3 SHARE THE MOMENT Handled transition from half-mile tracks well, sports 38/12-5-7 record.
Race Summary Just Daisy, gapped off the gate at the start, was slowed by a :31.2 second quarter and a single-file alignment to the 3/4-mile pole. She finished with good energy and could upset at an inflated price with a better trip. Play a 5-1 exacta and bet to win and place.

                            The Meadows - Race #7
                            Picks Notes
#10 DR. BRAVESTONE Fits on best, taken to upset despite difficult starting spot.
#4 JIMMYDIDONEGODD Took money, went off stride, couldn't sustain middle move.
#3 KYUQUOT Well-traveled 4-year-old moves outside in after early break.
Race Summary Dr. Bravestone met winning favorites in his last two starts, fits well off his early February running lines and gets needed class relief as he tries to overcome a second-tier starting spot. Play a 3-4-10 exacta box.
