Top Horse Racing Picks for Friday, March 11, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I discovered lots of surprises at Aqueduct Racetrack, Golden Gate Fields, and Tampa Bay Downs for my Friday horseracing picks, including five underdog moneymakers, as well as a bona fide 20/1 longshot at Tampa Bay. That should make our bankrolls happy. Very happy indeed..

Be sure to check out all the races at one of our best horseracing wagering sites.

    Good luck!
    Friday’s Picks for Aqueduct Racetrack

We’re on the dirt track for race two, a one-mile claiming race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I’m backing the 4/5 morning-line favorite, Royal Realm, ridden by top jockey Trevor McCarthy.

This four-year-old gelding finished in the money seven of his 12 career starts, winning one, which puts him in the spotlight in this six-horse field.

Mertkan Kantarmaci trains Royal Realm for owner Robert J. Amendola.

Race four is a one-mile starter allowance run on the dirt track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 3/1) Girl of Tosconova, piloted by Jorge A. Vargas, Jr.

This six-year-old mare moneyed eight of her 16 career starts, winning three, which gives her a slight statistical edge on the morning-line favorite, and a much more significant statistical advantage over the rest of this seven-horse field.

Regularly ranked among the top 100 trainers for the past two decades, Charlton Baker trains Girl of Tosconova for owner Saul J. Kupferberg.

Race seven is a one-mile allowance race on the dirt track for New York-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward. My money’s on the 2/5 morning-line favorite, Shalimar Gardens, with Manny Franco in the irons.
When the morning-line favorite is at 2/5 and the second-favored is at 6/1, you guess that the 2/5 favorite has got to be something special—and you’d be right.

This four-year-old filly finished four of her six career starts in the money, winning one. The only two races she didn’t money were her fourth-place finishes in the Raven Run Stakes (Grade II) at Keeneland in October and the Comely Stakes (Grade III) here at Aqueduct in November.

Horacio De Paz trains Shalimar Gardens for owner Barry K. Schwartz.
My Friday Picks for Golden Gate Fields

Let’s start on the all-weather track with race four, a six-furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races (maiden, claiming, and starter races for $16,000 or less not considered in eligibility).

I’m betting on the second-favored (at 5/2) Red Hot Lass, with jockey Assael Espinoza aboard.
This four-year-old filly finished four of her five career starts in the money, winning two. Versus the rest of this six-horse field, she’ll do.

Forty-year horseracing veteran Tim McCanna trains Red Hot Lass for owners Cindy Desimone, Fred Desimone, Tim McCanna, Mark Peters, and Bruce Philipie.

Race five is a six-furlong claiming race on the all-weather track for four-year-olds and upward that have never won two races (maiden, claiming and starter races for $4,000 or less not considered in eligibility). I like the 5/2 second-favored Magic Tiger, ridden by jockey Pedro Flores.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed six of his nine career starts, winning two, which puts him in the statistical spotlight of this seven-horse field.

Owner and former jockey Jamey R. Thomas trains Magic Tiger for co-owners Theodore Kelsick, Ted Merrill, Kevin Riggs, and Troy Thomas.

Race seven is a 5-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming run on the all-weather track for three-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Slack Tide, piloted by veteran jockey Irving Orozco.

This filly moneyed both of her career starts, finishing second on her first maiden attempt last June, then winning the Angie C. Stakes (Black Type) at Emerald Downs a month later. She should have no trouble, then, finding her way to the winner’s circle.

Breeders’ Cup veteran Blaine D. Wright trains Slack Tide for Ten Broeck Farm, Inc.
Friday Picks for Tampa Bay Downs

We’ll start on the dirt track with race four, a one-mile and 40 yards allowance optional claiming run for four-year-olds and upward. I’m calling this one for the second-favored (at 5/2) Winfromwithin, ridden by Chantal Sutherland.

This four-year-old colt has the best of this six-horse field, with four money finishes in his seven career starts, two of them wins, including the Columbia Stakes (Listed) here at Tampa Bay last March. And he finished third in the American Turf Stakes (Grade II) at Churchill Downs in May.

Top-ranked Jorge Delgado trains Winfromwithin for Lea Farms, LLC.

Race six is a seven-furlong starter optional claiming run on the dirt track for four-year-olds and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the third-favored (at 9/2) Creekmore, with Isaac Castillo in the irons.

In this experienced field of eight, this five-year-old gelding has the statistical best of it: 18 money finishes in 28 career starts, nine of them wins—including his most recent at Tampa Bay last month.

With more than two decades in the horseracing business, Michael Dini trains Creekmore for owner John E. Follmer. Dini tapped jockey Castillo to saddle Creekmore for that victory run last month.

Race eight is a six-furlong allowance optional claiming run on the dirt track for four-year-olds and upward. I’m making a two-dollar investment in the success of the 20/1 longshot Newyearsblockparty, with top jockey Ricardo Feliciano in the irons.
If I’m backing the 20/1 longshot, you can imagine just how sorry the rest of this eight-horse field must be.

Seriously, this four-year-old colt has better stats than the morning-line favorite, with seven money finishes in 13 career starts, three of those wins. In comparison, Ashiham, the favorite, moneyed four of his seven starts, winning one.

Incidentally, Ashiham last won a race (his maiden) in August of 2020. Newyearsblockparty won his last race (claiming) a mere seven months ago. Advantage: Newyearsblockparty.

Longtime horseracing veteran Jeffrey A. Poole trains Newyearsblockparty for owner Danny Lee Linville.

Oaklawn Picks: Cost a Fortune, long shot play of the day on March 11
      By J.N. Campbell

Oaklawn Park Picks - Friday, March 11, 2022

      Race 1: 8-2-1-3
      Race 2: 9-4-2-6
      Race 3: 1-4-7-2
      Race 4: 1-8-6-2
      Race 5: 5-9-6-8
      Race 6: 4-9-2-6
      Race 7: 2-8-7-10
      Race 8: 6-1-2-4
      Race 9: 11-6-3-4
**Most Likely Winner: # (Race )**
**Best Value: Cost A Fortune #2 (Race 7)**

      Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Justin’s Quest #9, 7/2):

Trainer Tom Van Berg comes from racing royalty, and he runs a tight ship when it comes to conditioning. In this race, he sends a 7-yr-old gelding back to the starting gate. Last out, this runner dropped down in class from the Clm16kn3L standard, and was certainly competitive against Clm10kn3L Co. Francisco Arrieta tried to get to the wire to arrive in-time, but it did not happen. Even with the outside post position, I think up against this group the seasoned veteran by Justin Philip could give Van Berg his 5th win of the Meet. I wouldn’t leave this one off any tickets!

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #9

      Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Cost a Fortune #2, 10/1):

I have no idea if Tim Dixon’s charge will be 10/1 when loading commences on Friday … but I sure hope so. This is a filly by Runhappy that is owned by David Rogers, and the 3-yr-old is taking a major class drop. That might be worrisome if it weren’t for the fact that Dixon just went too far up the class ladder off-the-claim. The connections got this one back in late December after dropping a ticket in the hot blinking box down in the Racing Office. Her form for Greg Compton, and before that, Jeremiah O’Dwyer was spotty. But Compton did bring her to Hot Springs, and she won an MC30k against open company. The rider switch from Francisco Arrieta to Luis Contreras isn’t the best news, but I will take it. Like I said, if the price is right, this one is a bet. Her latest works @OP look sharp enough to me.

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

      Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, OC62.5kn$y, F&M 4+):

Here is a tough condition that brings together quite an eclectic group of older female runners. What with the weather conditions being up in the air on Friday afternoon, it will be a question of who is in and who is out? If all 6 go, then I am sure no matter how the track sets up, Steve Asmussen’s Joy’s Rocket #1 will be close to the top of the tote. That is probably deserved, since the filly by Anthony’s Cross just missed last time out in a tough “Non-G” @OP. After some smart works, she appears ready to go once again with Joel Rosario getting the call. I am not sure that her form is in question, it is just the fact that she never seems to be the victor. I understand the way that Racing Secretary Pat Pope wrote this one is meant to keep certain winners out, but I want an entry that knows her way to the Larry Snyder Winner’s Circle. In that vein, I am getting behind John Ortiz and the excellent Novel Squall #6. I watched this filly by Violence score in impressive fashion back on 19 Feb. in a challenging OC62.5kn2x. David Cabrera really started some of his hot riding at that point, and this 4-yr-old really helped him elevate his game. I think her form is fabulous, as she continues to maintain a high-level of fitness. Maybe another rail running victory is in her future … Let’s use her on top, and play an ice-cold Exacta with the M/L favorite!

      Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 6 w 1

Aqueduct Picks: Can anyone take on De Paz's Shalimar Gardens on March 11?
        By J.N. Campbell

        Aqueduct Picks - Friday, March 11, 2022

        Race 1: 3-4-1-5
        Race 2: 5-6-2-4
        Race 3: 6-5-9-7
        Race 4: 1-7-3-6
        Race 5: 9-1-4-7
        Race 6: 4-3-7-2
        Race 7: 3-1-7-5
        Race 8: 7-9-2-4
**Most Likely Winner: Wild Carp Diem #6 (Race 3)**
**Best Value: Suspended Campaign #1 (Race 4)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Wild Carp Diem #6, 7/2):

Here is a colt by Carpe Diem that has not seen a dry surface in some time. You have to wonder if he got one, what would be his reaction? Jim Ryerson has this one entered at the same level for the 3rd time in-a-row, and I am thinking that he is due to break his maiden. In 4 career starts (3 on dirt and 1 on turf @AQU), he was perfectly adequate. That assertion though does not stir bettors who are after “wins.” In this spot, Ryerson goes with the “1st Time Blinkers,” and that is a popular angle to support. Maybe this is just what this colt needs, and he can showcase his talent for stretching out. That’s the light switch that is needed here with Manny Franco (his only rider ever) in the saddle.

        Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Suspended Campaign #1, 8/1):

Trainer David Duggan is a much better conditioner than his AQU record would speak to … I like this entry of his, a filly by Honor Code. She comes back to the MT, and I am hoping that she finds a faster set-up. I think it is rather obvious that she prefers to steer clear of moisture. In her last race, at this very level, she just could not get going in the slop. Since she likes to work from the back of the pack, she really needs a good stalking trip. If celebrated jockey Kendrick Carmouche can make it happen, then betting her should make for a significant overlay.

        Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile, ALLW72kn1x, F&M 3+ NY Breds):

The Friday “feature” brings together a nice group of 7 older females, but let’s face it, all 6 of this lot will be trying to best heavy favorite, Shalimar Gardens #1. The Horacio De Paz-trainee missed at even money last time at this exact level, so how do you interpret that performance? My argument is that this filly by Uncle Mo is not the same horse as she was last year. Sure, she has talent, but maybe this is just the right spot to take her on again. Manny Franco gets the call again, but she will not have an easy time of it in this spot, despite the class that is lacking out of the others. This bet I have constructed is a pure hunch play, and perhaps once again, De Paz’s charge will misfire. You never know what can happen … it’s just like life … a horse race.

        Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Wheel, 2/3/4/5/6/7 w 1

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Santa Anita for March 11, 2022
                By: Aaron Halterman

It’s another Friday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the late sequence on the card! We will also have full card selections for Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s see if we can get this home today.

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                Gulfstream Park March 11, 2022

                Race 6: Claiming

#2 Days Humor is a logical 10-1 shot here now that she is moving back to the synthetic surface. #1 Red Wind has been a consistent runner on this surface this meet, and should be competitive today, especially running first off the claim for Dibona.

                Race 7: Maiden Optional Claiming

#2 Cadencia moves back to the turf for this race, while also dropping down in class, while running second off of a long layoff. #5 Proliferation was seventh on debut last time out, but should move forward off of that effort, while cutting back in distance.

                Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Smarmy was a nice winner at Churchill Downs last time out, and is spotted in a decent race to make it two in a row today. #7 Merseyside gets back in with Florida breds today, which should help her chances significantly.

                Race 9: Maiden Special Weight

#6 Watch It will move over to the turf for this race after running a solid second over the synthetic surface last time out. #1 Mozay has hit the board in three straight races, and seems to prefer the turf over the synthetic surface, which helps her chances today.

                THE TICKET

                $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 1,2,4,5,6 / 2 / 2,7 / 1,5,6,7 – $20

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (March 11)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday where there is an eight-race card from 12:00 to 18:00. All betting locations are open except for the branch at Daegu which will stay closed this week due to the ongoing forest fires in the area. Attendance at any racecourse or OCB must be pre-booked through the MyCard app. Here are the previews:

                  Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens get things underway. Having won a January trial, (3) TRIPLE THUNDER was well-supported on debut at this distance on February 18th and having raced handy throughout, he finished in 4th place in a fair time. He should have come on for the experience and has claims here. In that race, Triple Thunder was half a length behind (1) WIDAEHAN SEONTAEK in 3rd. The latter was improving at start number two, and he came from well off the pace. He draws much better today, gets Perovic aboard and a bold showing can be expected again. Those two will probably dispute favourite status but the solitary debut-maker may have a say. (5) FUSAICHI looked well when trialing, running on well and 1200M may suit first-up. (6) BAEK GU and (7) CHEONGHO BOSS are others to consider.
Selections (3) Triple Thunder (1) Widaehan Seontaek (5) Fusaichi (6) Baek Gu
                  Next Best 7, 9
                  Fast Start 3, 7, 9, 10

                  Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

This lot all have patchy form so it’s hard to have too much confidence. (7) YEONGSEONG QUEEN is the only one to have a runner-up finish to her name, something she achieved at start number two at 1000M. She sandwiched that result between two clangers, but Kim Hye-sun, who rode her to that 2nd, returns and in a much smaller field she can sit a bit closer and run on. If you value consistency a little more then (2) VICTORY NINE is the one to side with. He has raced fairly in his last few outings and comes in off an unspectacular 6th of 12 over 1300M a month ago. Unspectacular would be enough to see him close here. (4) GOLD SWEET won a trial in January and while she offered nothing on debut, she can be given another chance here. As for the rest, (9) DOCTOR TANGO did manage a 4th place four starts back, while (8) WONDERFUL REALTY has the fastest time among those who have tackled the distance before.
Selections (7) Yeongseong Queen (2) Victory Nine (4) Gold Sweet (9) Doctor Tango
                  Next Best 8, 3
                  Fast Start 2, 3, 4, 9

                  Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

                  (7) SEOGWI POINT will be a warm favourite here. She stepped up to this distance at start number six on February 20th and recorded her best finish to date with 2nd, beaten half a length in a blanket finish following a slowly run race. She may be ridden a bit more forward here and, on that performance, is the one to beat. (9) LINE BREAKER was 4th in that race, les than half a length behind Seogwi Point. That was his third 4th place finish in four starts so far and he will be coming on strong again late today. (3) JIN MARK is another who tends to do her best work late on although she is yet to crack the top-two from thirteen starts. She comes back in trip to the distance at which she got her best result to date, and she can place here. (1) BOUNTY HUNTER and (8) NEW CROWN are among others in the frame.
Selections (7) Seogwi Point (9) Line Breaker (3) Jin Mark (1) Bounty Hunter
                  Next Best 8, 2
                  Fast Start 5, 6, 7, 9

                  Busan Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Fillies (and one mare) only here. (7) ONE RUSH is yet to finish any worse than 5th in five starts to date with her best being a 2nd over this trip two starts back. She ran 4th on her latest showing on February 11th, alongside a few of today’s rivals and this looks to be her race for the taking. She will though need to reverse the February 11th form on (10) RAON THE MILLION, who was handy throughout and equaled her best finish to date in 3rd. The same apprentice keeps the weight light, but she doesn’t draw well and may not have as much improvement in her as the favourite. Keep her safe though as she should be in this a long way again. After an inauspicious debut, (1) NAREUCAT has two 5th places and from the inside gate can continue to progress here. (8) MY PAL showed significant improvement last time and along with (3) SUSO POWER are others to take under consideration.
Selections (7) One Rush (10) Raon The Million (1) Nareucat (8) My Pal
                  Next Best 3, 6
                  Fast Start 5, 6, 8, 9

                  Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Competitive race for fillies and mares. We’ll keep faith with (6) STELL LUNA, who had a difficult day at the office over 1400M on her first try at this class on February 13th when she worked up to midfield from a wide draw but then weakened. She come back slightly in trip, has a much better gate and with Perovic up, she looks worth persevering with. (10) CHEONGMA HWANGHU is yet to win in fifteen attempts but has finished in the top five on no fewer than eleven occasions. She overcame the same gate to run 4th at her latest start at class and distance and is tactically versatile. Expect another solid performance even if she may again find at least one too quick. (3) DOCTOR KONGSUNI also remains a maiden but is on an upward trajectory. She comes up in class following back-to-back runner-up finished over 1200M and while up slightly in trip too, she has run through the line well and from a great draw is a contender. (9) GREEN PAPAGO is up in class following her maiden win and along with (4) BEST WIND is another in the frame.
Selections (6) Stell Luna (10) Cheongma Hwanghu (3) Doctor Kongsuni (9) Green Papago
                  Next Best 4, 1
                  Fast Start 3, 5, 6, 11

                  Busan Race 6: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

There is a warm favourite here in the shape of (10) H DAY. A winner over 1000M at class 6 level two starts back, he got a long way back on his first try at class and distance on December 17th but worked home well for 5th. He comes in here fresh and with a better early position, is the one to beat. (12) JATNAMUGIL similarly was a maiden winner two starts back at class 6 level, in his case over this distance, before running 5th on his first try at this class on February 25th. He likes to get on or close to the pace so he may need a bit of luck at the start, but he should be a danger here. So too (11) HARDY CHARLIE, who also goes best when on pace and his latest two finishes, both in 4th, are enough to see him into contention here. (7) CHEOGANG CUPID needed the run on his return from a lengthy absence in February. He has some ability though and has run fast times at the distance so be worth a chance at an each-way price. (6) HOT PLAY and (9) DOCTOR PRO are others with placing claims.
                  Selections (10) H Day (12) Jatnamugil (11) Hardy Charlie (7) Choegang Cupid
                  Next Best 6, 9
                  Fast Start 7, 11, 12, 13

                  Busan Race 7: Class 4 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

A very competitive race. (7) LANE KILLER was a winner over this distance at class 5 level two starts back before running 4th on his first try at this class on February 18th when he got a long way back and left himself too much to do. He does carry more weight today but is worth another chance in this company. (8) SONHADOR won back-to-back races at the end of last year to get promoted to this level and then ran a fair 3rd on her first crack at it over 1400M on Boxing Day. She has had a couple of months off since and while she comes up in trip and in the weights, has strong claims here. (3) BOLAVEN tackles two-turns for the first time too. His sole win so far came at 1200M, but he has run fairly at 1400M too. He is nicely weighted and drawn and can go close. (9) DASEUNG E and (10) ADELE CROWN among others with at least placing chances.
                  Selections (7) Lane Killer (8) Sonhador (3) Bolaven (9) Daeseung E
                  Next Best 10, 5
                  Fast Start 1, 3, 4, 8

                  Busan Race 8: Class 4 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                  (3) WINNER STAR may only have won one of his eight starts so far but it came in the Rookie Stakes, and he ran 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup championship juvenile race in early December. He swerved the Classic trial over 1400M last Sunday and lines up here instead having already run encouragingly enough twice over this distance. He draws well and will take some beating. (4) CHOEGANG LIGER enters in the best form of his career with two wins from his latest four including at this class over a mile. He comes up a furlong here, but he has been finishing off his recent races well and he should be competitive from off the pace again. (7) DUMUSAN too has been consistent across his latest starts, all of which have been at this distance. He tends to go back and run on and can run into the money again. (5) QUEEN HARLEY and (9) TOHAM STAR are others to look out for.
Selections (3) Winner Star (4) Choegang Liger (7) Dumusan (5) Queen Harley
                  Next Best 9, 2
                  Fast Start 1, 3, 5, 9

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$30,000 Guaranteed Pool

                    March 11, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Cal Expo begins the weekend with a 10-race program. The betting feature of the night is the 0.20 Pick 4 which starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $30,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                    Race 7

4-Frisky Pedro (2-1)-This Plano trainee doesn't make a habit of winning but has been cashing checks versus better. Drops to a more comfortable level and should be forwardly placed throughout.
7-Howtotrainurdragon (3-1)-Ten-year-old doesn't get onto the track that often anymore. But now drops to the level of its last win on 1-7. Not loving the short price but can compete for a picture if dialed on high.
9-Cowboys Dirtyboots (7/2)-Dropped to the basement and raced wide from the 7-hole to come a close 2nd. Ten-year-old bumps up a notch and won't be an odds-on choice this week. Paced the 2nd half in 57.2 and Svendsen should be rolling late again.

                    Race 8

5-Crackerjackoutlaw (7/2)-Comes out of a race where the field broke into 3 tiers and this gelding, and the one below were buried at the back. A return to the same effort as in the previous start, which was a win at this level, could end the same way.
7-Outlawnothnbutsmrt (8/5)-Team Goulet trainee has been in sharp form. This 4-year-old was 17 lengths back at the half and fell only 2 lengths short. The 56.2 back half is something to not overlook.

                    Race 9

5-Paddy Murphy (9/2)-Looking for some value and will toss the last 2 versus better. Draws well, won 3 back at this level and Kennedy can roll late off cover with an honest pace.
6-Dance Traveler (5/2)-Went the long way around and caught the field in the 1st start for the Plano barn. Returns at the same level and best to not overlook for another trip to the winner's circle.

                    Race 10

6-Lickcreek Speedway (8/5)-Winner of 3 straight has been doing it easily and should be another tiny price. Form has been so good it's difficult to shoot against, but this field could offer a stiffer challenge.
8-Summer Fantasy (3-1)-Defeated #6 back on 2-6 by getting the top and making every call a winning one. Plano should be looking to follow a similar plan here.

                    0.20 Pick 4

                    4,7,9/5,7/5,6/6,8
                    Total Bet=$4.80

                      Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Workout Commentary - 3/11/22

“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                      *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

Use (in order of preference): 2-Red Diamond; 4-Aventapp

Forecast: Red Diamond ran well over this course last year while earning speed figures that are good enough to beat this modest maiden $62,500 field of fillies and mares. The work tab looks good enough to have her fit, and she’s run very well twice off a layoff in the past, so let’s assume she’s ready to fire her best shot for Hall of Famer R. McAnally. Aventapp is slower on numbers than our top pick but has the benefit of a recent run when finishing second to a next out winner over the local lawn earlier this meeting. Let’s try to get by using just these two in our rolling exotics, with preference on top to Red Diamond.

Use (in order of preference): 2-Area Code; 1-Heaven’s Music

Forecast: Area Code finished a non-threatening fifth in his debut last month on grass in a race he had a right to need and today seems likely to produce a forward move with the switch to the main track and with F. Prat staying aboard. The son of Honor Code is a fit based on speed figures and certainly has more room to improve than the other logical contender, Heaven’s Music, who already has had nine chances while hitting the board six times. The winner most likely will be one of these two, so we’ll include both in our rolling exotics while reserving the main push for Area Code.

Use (in order of preference): Rose Maddox; 1-Youte; 6-Increase Stakes

Forecast: We’ll go three-deep in rolling exotic play in this six-runner allowance optional claiming turf sprint for fillies and mares, but otherwise pass the race. Late-runner Rose Maddox (TOC=7/2; ML=5/2) continues to break slowly and won’t reach her potential until she figures out how to leave with her company, but if she ever does get the hang of it the daughter of Grazen might turn out to be a decent California-bred filly. Second over this course and distance last time out with a furious late kick after spotting the field several lengths during the early stages, the S. Miyadi-trained sophomore should be capable of tagging the leaders close home with a good break and clean trip. Youte (TOC-9/2; ML=2-1) didn’t earn much of a speed figure when breaking her maiden over the local lawn in her second career start, but she did it the right way and certainly has plenty of room for further improvement. The C. Gaines-trained daughter of Danzing Candy switches to F. Prat, lands the rail, and projects to be running on strongly late. Increase Stakes (TOC=3/5; ML-3-1) broke her maiden under these conditions last month while on the pace under pressure throughout in game style while earning a decent speed figure. Loved by the analytics, the daughter of Square Eddie should be highly competitive right back and is a “must use” in rolling exotic play.

                      Single: 2-Micro Share

Forecast: Micro Share, the 4/5 morning line favorite, was scratched out of the Santa Ysabel S.-G3 last Sunday for this more realistic spot and the daughter of Upstart looks ready to graduate after finishing a distant second behind Adare Manor, who may very well be the best 3-year-old filly in the West. A recent outstanding workout (7f, 1:26h) in which she broke off five lengths in front of subsequent San Felipe S.-G2 winner Forbidden Kingdom and held him off while under a stout hold was quite impressive, so let’s expect the R. Mandella-trained filly to handle this assignment as a logical rolling exotic single.

                      Notable Workouts:

Micro Share (February 24, Santa Anita. 7f, 1:26h). Grade: B+
Broke off several lengths in front of subsequent San Felipe S.-G2 winner Forbidden Kingdom (7f, 1:25h) and after being challenged by that one entering the lane, gamely held way while traveling out to the seven-furlong pole (workmate was under late pressure), quite impressive under the circumstances for R. Mandella, splits of :24.1, :36 flat, :48 flat, 1:12.3 and 1:26 flat on our watches. Looks ready to earn her maiden diploma.

Use (in order of preference): 4-Sometimes Always; 2-Dream Robber; 1-Mad Catter

Forecast: We’ll triple this restricted (nw-2) $12,500 claiming sprint in our rolling exotics, but otherwise pass in a race that we have no real conviction. Sometimes Always (TOC=5/2; ML=2-1) has speed figures that can win and was more than five lengths clear of the rest when second over this track and distance vs. slightly tougher foes last month. He’s always been suspect under pressure close home (one win, six seconds) but if he can turn in two alike, he’ll be tough. Dream Robber (TOC-3-1; ML=5/2) is re-equipped with blinkers, drops for the money run and is a perfect one-for-one at this abbreviated sprint trip. He’ll be part of the pace throughout. Mad Catter (TOC=2-1; ML=4-1) looked decent breaking his maiden at the bottom $20,000 level last month with a number that makes him a fit right back. If he leaves cleanly from the rail, he should be a pace factor throughout.

Use (in order of preference): 5-Excelerina; 7-Annaghlasa

Forecast: We loved the way Excelerina (TOC=5-1; ML=9/5) inhaled maidens in her U.S. debut last month over this course and distance, lagging to the head of the lane and then quickening like a good filly to graduate going away with a solid speed figure. This raise to first-level allowance condition should be well within her capabilities, so let’s strongly prefer the P. D’Amato-trained Irish-bred on top. Stable mate Annaghlasa (TOC=7/5; ML=5/2) gives the barn two bullets to fire and is worth using on your ticket as a back-up or a saver based on the pace projection of the race that has her settling outside in an ideal stalking position, if not on the lead. This nine-furlong distance should be within her range and she’s fast on numbers, as well.

                      Notable Workouts:

Excelerina (February 19, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h TT). Grade: B+
Broke off several lengths behind Shut Up Michael (5f, 1:02.1h TT) and wound up head-and-head with workmate at the wire while finishing under a nice hold (workmate not asked, either), final three furlongs in :36.2. Won her U.S. debut with authority and should be very competitive on the raise.

Use (in order of preference): I’m Corfu; 5-Fury Kap

Forecast: I’m Corfu (TOC=4/5; ML=9/5) earned a sharp speed figure when finishing third in a very strong starter’s allowance sprint in his local debut last month and this drop to the $32,000 looks like a winning move for his Midwest connections. He’ll have to break running from the rail but if he can shake loose early, he should be able to dominate throughout. Fury Kap (2-1; ML=5/2) won his comeback race in okay style and is jumped considerably in class in a sign of confidence. We’ll use him on a ticket or two as a backup, but he’ll really have to step it up in the speed figure department to be a threat to our top pick.

                      Notable Workouts:

Fury Kap (March 4, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.2h). Grade: B
Went off quickly, was ridden through the lane and was doing his best to the end, final half mile in :23.1 and :48.4h for J. Sadler. Won his comeback in a soft spot last month, probably will produce a forward move based on this drill.

Use (in order of preference): 3-Cash Equity; 4-Sniper Kitten

Forecast: We’ll use two in the nightcap, a stronger-than-par second level allowance turf miler for older horses. Cash Equity (TOC=5-1; ML=5/2) makes his U.S. debut for a barn that has superior stats with these types of European imports and based on his French form this P. D’Amato-trained colt should be hard to beat at this level. Multiple stakes-placed in good company last summer, the son of Toronado has put together a series of training track drills that should have him plenty fit, and with F. Prat taking the call you know this colt is extremely live and well-meant. Sniper Kitten (TOC=9/2; ML=20-1) was in too tough when setting the pace and then weakening to finish fifth in the Thunder Road S.-G3 behind subsequent Kilroe Mile-G1 winner Count Again. This is a much more realistic spot for the veteran son of Kitten’s Joy, who does his best running when held up early and allowed to quicken late. He is listed at 20-1 on the morning line but the analytics give him a much better chance thant that. The main push goes to Cash Equity, but both should be included in rolling exotic play.

                      Notable Workouts:

Cash Equity (March 6, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02h TT). Grade: B
Import in P. D’Amato barn broke off two lengths behind the talented sophomore filly Kitty Kitana (same time) and hit the wire a like distance behind, but wasn’t asked, final three furlongs in :36.2. Was a marathon type in France but should be effective at a middle distance on this circuit.

Frank Carulli: Stronach 5 Analysis | Friday, March 11, 2022

                        March 11, 2022 | By Frank Carulli

                        STRONACH 5 ANALYSIS
                        March 11, 2022

Form finally held in the Stronach 5 with a season-low $1,756 payout for a winning $1 ticket when the cross-country wager was offered February 25. But keep in mind the three previous installments featured a $29,000 average payout and winning horses that paid $30.40, $31.80, $39.40 and $67.60, respectively. Here's an early look at this week’s action, with an update to follow Friday after scratches:

LEG A: (Laurel Park, race 8, 4:24 EST) -- Go deep in a difficult opening leg. LOST MY VOWCHER was away last, checked nearing the final turn and rallied 5-wide to finish second. BAHAMA CHANNEL was 4-wide on the first turn and advancing on the second turn before he flattened out in the same race at 1-1/16 miles. TITAN’S WILL finished ahead of both runners, is proven at the distance and has a tactical edge in a race that lacks pace. LUDICROUS MODE has improved since the claim and should benefit from the added ground, but he can’t seem to avoid slow starts and very wide trips. UNION LEADER rallied to win 3 of his last 6 starts in California, all going a route of ground. He arrives off a cross-country journey with an 8/3-2-1 record on conventional dirt.

LEG B: (Santa Anita, race 3, 4:30 EST) -- INCREASE STAKES dueled inside and shook clear to break her maiden at 6F on the turf, now lands in a pace-controlling spot from the outside. YOUTE overcame a slow start and wide trip to beat Increase Stakes in a long sprint and will get deserved attention with Prat aboard for the first time. SQUARED SHADY sandwiched a series of fast workouts between back-to-back winning rallies on the Golden Gate all-weather surface and she has a 7/1-2-0 record on the Santa Anita turf to run back to.

LEG C: (Gulfstream Park, race 8, 4:37 EST) -- CAPTURINI chased a loose leader through fast fractions, took over in early stretch and beat a suspect field easily despite drifting a bit in the stretch. She arrives in top form for new trainer Claudio Gonzalez, who is far better than his 0-17 record at the meet and 17-percent win rate off the claim suggests. Let’s try her as today’s solo play.

LEG D: (Golden Gate, race 3, 4:47 EST) -- The last 10 times a race from Golden Gate has been a part of the sequence, four winners paid between $30 and $97, all fueling lucrative five-figure payouts. This race fits the mold, with class droppers, recent claims, layoff horses and a field of nine that is a combined 9-for-114, so include several runners on the ticket.

LEG E: (Gulfstream Park, race 9, 5:08 EST) -- SANURA, a daughter of Kitten’s Joy, can be excused for her one-mile debut on the turf when she broke slowly from post 11 and never threatened. She chased the 5-to-2 winner in a follow-up route on the all-weather track, when she shifted 4-wide near the top of the stretch ‘stayed on with good response’ to finish ahead of two next-out winners. WATCH IT showed promise with a 4-wide rally from post 9 to finish second in her turf-to-main track debut. Her dam was a Grade III winner in Ireland.

                        Suggested $1 Ticket

                        Leg A: 2, 3, 5, 8, 9
                        Leg B: 1, 5, 6
                        Leg C: 1
                        Leg D: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8
                        Leg E: 4, 6

                          Charles Town - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#2 Ishihara Think he's worth a bit of a price look with this group, as there are plenty of forward players signed on, and he has some ability to finish from off the splits. Along late if this starts to come apart.
#5 River Crossroad RVF He's the one to beat in here as he aims for a fourth consecutive win, but there is at least a small chance some other committed forward players make things difficult for those right up near the top. Respect at a short price.
#6 Youthinkthatsfunny He probably offers a better number this time around after the modest effort at even money last time out, and he has the tactical speed to stay in touch in the early stages.
Race Summary Plenty of respect for River Crossroad RVF in top form, but Ishihara should offer a significantly better number with what looks like a decent race shape waiting for him if they can settle off the splits and rally late.

                          Charles Town - Race #7
                          Picks Notes
#8 Midnight Shift He should offer a better price this time around after making his local debut with similar last time out. Think his best stuff does the trick here, and the race shape should work in his favor to spy the splits.
#4 San Antone He was very competitive with similar here in the last couple months, and I like that he has some versatility to adapt to how things unfold into the first turn. Might get the jump on the top choice.
#6 Sheriff Chip He's still an unknown over the local footing, but he has been in with some decent Laurel groups in recent tries, and his baseline effort looks on par with what it might take to land this.
Race Summary Midnight Shift might offer a decent enough price with San Antone and Sheriff Chip both likely to take some cash, and he's attractive even if he's a modest third choice on the board.

                          Charles Town - Race #8
                          Picks Notes
#6 Stratusfaction She showed some dangerous pace to score easily on the engine last time out, and she never really had a chance in her local debut two starts back. Could see her landing another one right away on the rise to face winners.
#1 Lady Licious She was an easy winner the last time she raced for this price, and she's getting down in class after a few races facing better than what she'll meet here. That said, she still has inconsistent running lines, and I wouldn't want to be here at too short a price.
#10 Toy Tiger She proved a good fit when dropping to this level last time out, and that kind of effort makes her one of the obvious players with these. Think an outside spying trip should be in the cards.
Race Summary Strausfaction will likely have a go of it on the front end here, and this is a pretty logical spot for her to try winners after getting a clean run on the engine last out to land the maiden win.

#5 FRANK DEFORD Ran away from odds-on fave two back, flattened out in latest, gets Lasix.

#4 BET THE LINE Three seconds in last five starts but seldom wins.
Race Summary Frank Deford couldn’t sustain a middle move after he missed a week sick, but he gets first-time Lasix and is re-united with Merriman, who coaxed a win out of him last month. Play 1-4 and 1-5 exactas.

#2 VIPER Won the last time he tested this level and was claimed.
Race Summary Make It Come True couldn’t factor against some proven rivals through a :56 back half in his first start off the claim. But he looms a front-end longshot consideration if aggressively driven from the rail in a pace-less race. Play a 1-2-6 exacta box.

#5 NOT ME GRAM Finished first or second in half of his starts this year.
#7 McKEE CREEK Brushed to clear lead, won by a neck for third time in last four starts.
Race Summary Tymal Torch showed improved speed and stamina from the rail last out, got past the 4-to-5 pace setter in the stretch and finished second. The 12-year-old is 0-13 the last two years but can reverse the trend with a move forward off that effort. Play 1-5 and 1-7 exactas.

                              Purse:$67,000

Race 2 covers 6 furlongs with a $67,000 purse up for grabs. Heaven’s Music and Area Code should be dangerous participants in this race.

Heaven’s Music is winless in nine attempts, with finishes of 2nd, 2nd, 4th, 3rd, 2nd in his previous five races. It’s going pretty well with consistent performances.

Heaven’s Music placed 2nd behind Quick Buck by a neck for $67,000. It was a nice run after showing 3rd on January 22 in a $39,000 race.

I don’t know if Heaven’s Music can consistently keep up in this class. Area Code finished 5th on debut on February 20.

Area Code was 5th in a $67,000 assignment. That doesn’t look special. However, the colt should do much better at 6 furlongs after a drop in distance.

Expect an improvement with Area Code having a nice opportunity to secure a win.

The fourth race at Santa Anita Park covers a mile for a $67,000 purse on the dirt. Micro Share and Sweet Talked are going to be tough customers in Race 4.

Sweet Talked made her debut on February 12 and it didn’t go as planned. She was 5th and could have been better, but she is open to improvement.

Sweet Talked was timed at 1:01.60 and 1:01.80 at 5 furlongs. Her best workout was a 4-furlong attempt of 47.20 seconds.

Micro Share is 3rd, 2nd in two attempts on November 20 and January 7. She showed 3rd in a $70,000 event and placed 2nd in a $67,000 race.

In her third race, the filly is going to be a dangerous one to strike home with a win.

                              Purse:$43,000

Fury Kap and I’m Corfu should be tough in Race 7. The seventh race has a $43,000 purse covering 6 furlongs on the dirt.

Fury Kap is 1st, 9th, 1st in three career starts. The only race Fury Kap didn’t win was a stakes race. In the two other easiest races, Fury Kap made it look easier.

He defeated Sometimes Always by 1 ΒΌ lengths in a $26,000 event on February 12. That was much easier and it showed with the final result.

I’m Corfu is 8 for 44 in his career and 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 6th, 3rd in the last seven. In his most recent win, I’m Corfu beat Colonel Klink by 1 length in a $24,000 event.

Since then, I’m Corfu has struggled to get to the front. I’m Corfu most recently showed 3rd in a $40,000 event. That was fine.

Not the best gelding, but against a field of this caliber, I’m Corfu should be reliable on a win ticket.
