Nothing has come easy for preseason Big East favorite Villanova, which opened the season 4th in the AP's preseason poll. Villanova was 7-3 in non-conference games, then went 16-4 in Big East play. However, Providence, coming off a 13-13 year (9-10 in the Big East), won the Big East at 14-3. The 8th-ranked Wildcats (No. 2 seed Big East) eked out a 66-65 win on Thursday over 7th-seeded St John's and will now face 3rd-seeded Connecticut (20th in the latest AP poll), which beat Seton Hall 62-52 last night. The Huskies are 23-8 on the season and Villanova 24-7.
Dan Hurley had a nice run at Rhode Island (won 25 & 26 games his last two seasons with NCAA bids) which got him the UConn job. He's in his fourth season at Storrs and last year got UConn into the NCAAs (Huskies will be back 'dancing' win or lose here). Guards Gole (15.8 & 4.1 APG), Martin (13.5 & 7.6) and Jackson (6.7 & 7.0) start in the backcourt, with the 6-9 Sanogo (14.9 & 8.7) and Whaley (7.9 & 4.8) starting in the frontcourt. The 6-9 Polley (7.7) is the top reserve. Against Seton Hall, Cole and Martin paced the Huskies with 17 points apiece, while Whaley added 10 points and Sanogo pulled down 11 rebounds.
Villanova head coach Jay Wright owns two national titles (2016 and 2018) but as noted above, it hasn't been smooth sailing. Wright is going with a basic six-man rotation so far this season. Collin Gillespie has fully recovered from an MCL injury that ended his 2020-21 campaign early. He leads the Wildcats in scoring with 16.2 PPG. Fellow guards Justin Moore adds 15.3 & 5.1 and Daniels chips in 10.4 PPG in the role of 6th-man. Up front, it's the 6-7 Samuels (10.2 & 6.0), the 6-8 Dixon (9.4 & 6.6).and the 6-7 Slater (10.2 & 3.6). Caleb Daniels moved into the starting lineup and led the way with 19 points against St John's. Jermaine Samuels was struggling with back spasms (he was riding the stationary bike to stay loose and came through with seven points and eight rebounds). Eric Dixon also had four points and nine rebounds in 15 minutes despite feeling ill right before tip-off. Justin Moore added 15 points and Collin Gillespie had 14 as the Wildcats rallied from a 17-point deficit.
The veteran-laden Wildcats never panicked when they trailed by 17. They kept competing, and the result was another win and the ability to advance in this rugged tournament. "This conference is as good as it's ever been this year," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. "We just knew St. John's was really good. We weren't down. We weren't disappointed with how we played at half down seven. We just got out of sync a little bit." I think last night's 'scare' is just what the Wildcats needed, and I expect them to be in Saturday's title game (hopefully, against Providence).

The North Carolina Tar Heels are playing as well as anyone in the ACC right now. They are 6-0 SU & 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall. That includes a 94-81 upset at Duke as 11-point underdogs in the regular season finale.
The Tar Heels avoided the letdown and crushed Virginia 63-43 in their first game of the ACC Tournament yesterday. Now they should still be fresh and ready to go tonight against Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels swept the season series with the Hokies and have won four straight meetings overall.
Virginia Tech will be playing its 3rd game in 3 days and is at a big disadvantage in the rest department. Plus, the Hokies had to go to the wire in each of their first two games. They needed overtime to beat Clemson before topping Notre Dame 87-80 yesterday.
