Gulfstream Park Hotlist - March 16

          March 15, 2022

Today’s Gulfstream Park Hot List races to watch
          Wednesday, March 16, 2022

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
          Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
          * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (7) The Connector was third in a stakes and looks best in this spot. (6) Reservenotattained won easily on dirt but is untested on Tapeta. (2) Henry’s World has speed and looks like the one to catch. (4) Bam Bam Blu steps up in company but can be a factor here. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 6-7. Exactas: 6-7 over 2-4 and 2-4 over 6-7. Doubles: 2-4-6-7 over 1-2-3-7.
2nd race – (1) Wicked Fast was disqualified from a win last time but can make amends for that in this spot. (2) Panorama Truck won by a nose on Tapeta and should be well-suited by turf. (3) King of Truth might enjoy these conditions. (7) Fast N Steady has back class and merits some attention. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-7.
5th race – (3) Anna and Mia debuts for Ward and looks like the one to beat. (2) R Girl’s Werth It was fourth in a similar spot and will be a factor here. (6) Musical Design is another Ward firster worthy of attention. (5) Perfect Provision could be tough to catch here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-6.
7th race – (2) Thataint Tooshabby (B) is unbeaten in two turf starts and can make it three in a row here. (7) American Heroine gets back on turf and should be the main rival. (1) Beechnut Trophy exits a nice maiden win and cannot be overlooked. (4) Running Legacy switches to Irad and will make her presence felt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-7. Doubles: 1-2-4-7 with 2-5-7-10.
8th race – (5) Dreaming of Audrey (C) was bet down from 3-5 to 3-10 and missed by a neck. Perhaps this will finally be graduation day. (2) Lemonade Lady was claimed by Joseph last time and looms as the one to fear. (10) Soupster rallied for third last time and belongs in the exotics. (7) Black Swan was a game second and figures to be in the picture once again. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-7-10.

Top Horse Racing Picks for Wednesday, March 16, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

The favorites will carry the day at the three tracks I reviewed for my Wednesday horse racing picks—Charles Town Races, Sam Houston Race Park, and Tampa Bay Downs.

That’s not to say I only picked the morning-line favorites to win. That would be wrong. I found a number of solid underdog moneymakers, but not enough to outnumber the faves. In one case, I went with the M/L fave only because he seems least likely to lose—high praise indeed, eh?

Don’t forget to take a look at your best online wagering options before you head on down to my picks.

            Good luck!
Wednesday’s Picks for Charles Town Races

Let’s start on the main track with race four, a 1-1/16 miles claiming race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races (West Virginia-bred races not considered in eligibility).

I agree with the morning line: The entry least likely to lose in this unimpressive field of eight is the 7/5 favorite, Buff’s Eye View, piloted by Darius Thorpe.

This seven-year-old gelding finished in the money 18 of his 30 career starts, winning five, including the West Virginia Lottery Breeders’ Classic Stakes (Black Type) in 2018, the same year he broke his maiden. In fact, he won four of his five races in 2018.
Although he’s posted plenty of finishes in the money since, Buff’s Eye View didn’t win again until last October. And yet, he’s got the best stats in this race.

Longtime horseracing veteran David Walters trains Buff’s Eye View for owner-breeder Michael J. Miller.

Race six is a 1-1/16 miles starter optional claiming run on the dirt track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the morning-line’s favorite in this race: Bearakontie, with Inoel Beato in the irons.

This five-year-old mare moneyed 13 of her 20 career starts, winning nine. In fact, she won seven of her last eight races. She’s got this.

Bearakontie is trained by owner Robert J.W. Johnston, who tapped Beato to saddle Bearakontie for his two most recent victories.

Race seven is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races (West Virginia-bred races not considered in eligibility). My money’s on the second-favored (at 2/1) Door Buster, ridden by top jockey Arnaldo Bocachica.

This four-year-old filly finished 12 of her 15 career starts in the money, winning five. She’ll see some serious competition from the morning line favorite, Boundtobebad, but should easily prevail.

While Boundtobebad has moneyed 21 of her 24 starts, including a double fistful of stakes races, she’s proven virtually incapable of sealing the deal (three wins in 2019, one in 2021).

Ollie L. Figgins, III trains Door Buster for Jay A. Reese, LLC.
Wednesday Horse Racing Picks for Sam Houston Race Park

We’ll start on the turf with race three, a 1-1/16 miles claiming run for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races. I’m buying a win ticket on the fourth-favored (at 5/1) Math Mystery, with Leandro D. Goncalves in the irons.

This five-year-old mare moneyed three of her five career starts, winning two.
A brief history, to be sure, but the rest of this seven-horse field took at least twice as many starts to collect two wins.

With more than three decades in the horse racing business, Kari Craddock trains Math Mystery for owner-breeder Jim H. Plemmons. Craddock has put Goncalves in the irons for all five of Math Mystery’s races.

We’re back on the dirt track for race seven, a one-mile allowance run for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Pinch Assault, with veteran jockey Ry Eikleberry aboard.

This eight-year-old gelding finished 36 of his 56 career starts in the money, winning 14. He’ll see some serious pressure from the third-favored Sniveling, but should prevail.

A top-ranked trainer in both wins and earnings every year since 2010, Karl Broberg trains Pinch Assault for End Zone Athletics, Inc.

Race eight is a five-furlong allowance race for Texas-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the third-favored (at 5/1) Texas Mama, ridden by Ry Eikleberry.

This four-year-old filly finished ten of her 14 career starts in the money, winning three. She has proven more capable in the shorter sprints, and this race should be hers to lose.

Karl Broberg trains Texas Mama for End Zone Athletics, Inc.
My Wednesday Picks for Tampa Bay Downs

Let’s start on the dirt track with race two, a six-furlong starter optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. I’m backing the 6/5 morning-line favorite, Machismo, with Pablo Morales in the irons.

This seven-year-old gelding earned the morning line’s favor with 24 money finishes in 37 career starts, eleven of those wins. In this otherwise evenly matched field of six, Machismo is the standout. He’s been regularly posting triple-digit speed figures for the past 14 months.

Machismo is trained by owner David Wolochuk.

We move to the turf course for race seven, a 1-1/16 miles claiming run for four-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I’m betting on the second-favored (at 9/2) Joe Phillips, ridden by veteran jockey Samy Camacho.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed three of his eight career starts, winning one. More importantly, both of his money finishes also happen to be his most recent—which is what ultimately puts him at the top of the list in this unimpressive 11-horse field.

Top-ranked for both wins and earnings for the past two years, J. Kent Sweezey trains Joe Phillips for Westbury Stables LLC.

Race eight takes us back to the dirt track with a one mile and 40 yards claiming run for four-year-olds and upward. I’m going along with the morning line on this one: Bet the 5/2 favorite, End All Get All, piloted by Fernando De La Cruz.

This four-year-old gelding is the statistical leader of this field of eight, finishing in the money 16 of his 23 careers starts, winning five. More importantly, he’s moneyed all three of his 2022 races, winning one.

Gulfstream Park Picks: Joseph's Amazing Trip in R3 on March 16
                By J.N. Campbell

Gulfstream Park Picks - Wednesday, March 16, 2022

                Race 1: 3-6-7-2
                Race 2: 5-1-2-4
                Race 3: 1-4-3-6
                Race 4: 3-1-6-2
                Race 5: 6-7-3-2
                Race 6: 5-8-1-2
                Race 7: 8-1-5-4
                Race 8: 10-5-8-2
**Most Likely Winner: Amazing Trip #1 (Race 3)**
**Best Value: Faithful Ruler #3 (Race 4)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Amazing Trip #1, 9/2):

With rainfall in the forecast, it might be a smart plan to seek shelter on the AW track at Gulfstream. It can take significant amounts of moisture, and still play fair. In this spot, trainer Saffie Joseph is attempting to extend his lead in the trainer standings over the ubiquitous Todd Pletcher. He is up by 10 wins already … This filly by The Big Beast competed at this level last time at Gulfstream back in late January. She did not run poorly, and should be able to improve based on her work tab. Some handicappers do not think much of 3F practices, but when you are running in 5½ sprints, I think they can be of use. With Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle once again, Frank Calabrese’s filly should win. Getting odds of 9/2 sure would be excellent … but don’t count on it.

                Wager: $100 Win, #1

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Faithful Ruler #3, 8/1):

Going back to the Tapeta, I found a gem of a runner in this gelding by American Pharoah. Trained by the able-bodied Brendan Walsh, this 3-yr-old is getting back to doing something that he likes … the AW surface. Two races back, he won going 6F at Turfway Park, and that was a frontrunning score by a neck in one of those tough MSW62k events that they host. The 2nd place runner has already come back and won, so that speaks well. Walsh tried to bring this one to GP in an OC75kn1x, and it was a big ask. Dropping down to this level seems much more appropriate, and the addition of Luis Saez is a welcome one. At odds of 8/1 on the M/L, maybe he can get the job done for a barn that has class …

                Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 7½, OC75kn1x, 3F):

Barring some kind of weather miracle or the Stronachs constructing a dome over the course, this turf race is bound to be moved to the AW. This is what the 1st Bet folks wanted to be able to do, so ‘cappers must plan accordingly. This is a high-level OC75k contest, and a few of these fillies are trying to make the leap from the MSW Division. Out of these, Saffie Joseph probably has the best-looking runner in Beechnut Trophy #1. A daughter of Real Solution, this one gets Lasix for the 1st time, and is coming off a 2½ month rest. Jose Ortiz will get the call, and that is a rider upgrade for sure. Always in-the-money, this Ramsey homebred was at her best back in early November, when she took on the boys and ended up 3rd on the AW. She should be tough once again … As far as those entries that are used to this kind of class level, I would not count out Carlos David’s Jumeirah #8. The filly by Twirling Candy will be a great price come post time, and she gets the services of Julien Leparoux. This is a seasoned rider who knows how to get his mount to the lead when it counts. He might try and steal this race on the front, and he will need to get a solid break being drawn so far to the outside. The distance in this spot is tough, but Leparoux has the skill. I want to use 3 other entries on this ticket that I am constructing ... They are: Joseph’s other half of the uncoupled entry, Running Legacy #4 (ridden by Irad Ortiz), Brendan Walsh’s Demogorgon #5 (in form), and finally, Christophe Clement’s American Heroine #7 (won by a head last time out in a MSW60k). Here is the bet in what is a very competitive contest on this Wednesday.

                Wager: Trifecta Wheel, $2, 1/8 w 1/8 w 4/5/7

Sam Houston Picks: Trainers Broberg and Asmussen continue to duel on March 16
                  By J.N. Campbell

Sam Houston Race Park Picks - Wednesday, March 16, 2022

                  Race 1: 1-5-2-3
                  Race 2: 5-1-4-2
                  Race 3: 6-7-3-1
                  Race 4: 2-1-6-4
                  Race 5: 8-1-6-5
                  Race 6: 9-6-8-5
                  Race 7: 6-9-1-5
                  Race 8: 8-2-3-11
                  Race 9: 6-3-2-7
**Most Likely Winner: Great In Red #6 (Race 3)**
**Best Value: Tatanka #9 (Race 6)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Great in Red #6, 8/5):

I have not taken the opportunity to discuss much about the training exploits of Cesar Govea, but he is having an impact on this Meet. His percentages are strong, and with 13 wins so far, that is pretty impressive. As he continues to march forward, in this Claiming Game event he has a mare by Custom for Carlos that looks pretty formidable. With turf experience on her form, you can expect that she will be ready to handle a crowd like this one. Over the past year, she was traded quite a bit in the Racing Office, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t built a nice dossier. The able Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez, who is riding better than ever on this surface, will get a shot at some redemption. The turf course at Sam has been promoting those that are close to the lead or on it … hopefully, Govea has a sound plan.

                  Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Tatanka #9, 8/1):

Looking for some value on this Wednesday card, we are after a pick that possibly did not live up to their potential in a prior race. Now, returning for another chance, this is the opportunity to back them to the hilt. That means we will have a major opportunity to score … Bret Calhoun has a strong stable based in the Southwest Circuit, and he has an uncoupled entry in this spot that looks promising. I like almost any sprinter by Goldencents because that means they have the ability to get out of the gate, moving succinctly. Last out, this gelding was not able to hold onto the lead that he established early on. Maybe the fractions were too stiff … if new jockey Jose Alvarez can control them, or simply get away from the closers, then this team might have a chance. Let’s roll …

                  Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #9 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile, ALLW37kn1x, 3+):

Trainers Broberg and Asmussen continue to battle for the training title at Sam Houston, and it is going to go down to the bitter end. The former has not held the distinction for 10 years, while the latter is looking to collect once again. On the Wednesday card, we are taking to the dirt going a mile, and both trainers have promising entries. Broberg sends Pinch Assault #1 over from his base at Delta Downs. That Meet is now closed, so it gives him the chance to shift some chess pieces around. Leading rider Ry Eikleberry gets the call, and he is head-and-shoulders above the rest of this colony. This ALLW Co. event is not going to be easy for this gelding by Due Date, but he has 56 starts under his saddle … he will be fine. As for Asmussen, he has a Three Chimneys homebred named Ottothelegend #9 that is coming to Texas after running in a variety of environments … including Oaklawn, Santa Anita, Keeneland, and Churchill. The colt by Uncle Mo was streaky over the past year, and I would think that the HOF conditioner would like to get him a win against an easier group like this one. That doesn’t mean it is going to happen though, since class does not always shine through … fitness does. Stewart Elliott, Eikleberry’s main rival gets the call, which is not a surprise. I like both of these entries, and plan to use them, but on top, I am going to go with Eduardo Ramirez’s entry. Sniveling #6 was a horse I watched throughout the Delta Meet, and the gelding by Will Take Charge had some solid moments in ALLW Co. Most bettors overlook the track that is just on the other side of the LA border … they shouldn’t. Jose Alvarez, the local jockey, “takes charge.” He should be riding a square price, and look for him to be running this one from off-the-pace. I am sure both leading trainers will watch their entries bet down … this is a very good price play option, with a chance. Here is the wager … and yes, it is ice-cold!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Cold, 6/9/1

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs for March 16, 2022
                      By: Aaron Halterman

It’s time to start another week of great racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park, which has the best card of the day. We will also be covering Tampa Bay Downs for the paid Rockets as they have a solid day of racing as well. Let’s cash this ticket!

                      Gulfstream Park March 16, 2022

                      Race 5: Maiden Optional Claiming

#2 R Girls Werth It ran well in her turf debut last time out, and should move forward off of that effort. #3 Anna and Mia makes her debut in this spot for Wesley Ward, who is always solid with first time starters. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount as well.

                      Race 6: Starter Allowance
                      freestar

#5 Shes All Woman was a nose away from victory last time out, and runs for the Sano barn for the first time today. #8 Pino in a Purse will make her dirt today in this spot, while running for Saffie Joseph Jr. for the first time, which will lead to improvement.

                      Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#4 Running Legacy was a nice debut winner last time out over the synthetic surface, and that form should translate well to the turf. #1 Beechnut Trophy was a winner over this surface last time out, and has solid connections at this track.

                      Race 8: Maiden Claiming

#5 Dreaming of Audrey was second at this level last time out, which was her first race for DAngelo, and we could see more improvement today. #7 Black Swan also was second in a similar race to this one last time out, and can win in this spot today.

                      THE TICKET

                      $.50 Pick 4 (Races 5-8) 2,3,5,7 / 5,8 / 1,4,7 / 5,7,8,10 – $48

                              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                              Picks Notes
#3 Pink Channel She had a tricky start last time out and is capable of something better, and she might be able to work out a decent kind of tactical trip with a cleaner getaway.
#5 Nana's Gray Her Indiana graduation run on the turf remains her only really solid try, but she is getting into a much easier spot than she has seen in recent starts and looks likely to be tough at what might be an underlaid price.
#9 Hohohoho Forward player will have to hold form off the claim, but she has generally been in with better company than she's going to find here, but she'll probably have to hustle just a touch to find the front from this draw. Capable.
Race Summary Pink Channel might be the right mid-range price horse to beat a pair of really logical runners who have been facing better company, and a better start today might keep 'Channel in a bit better spot early .

                              Fair Grounds - Race #8
                              Picks Notes
#5 Boss Moon Benny Very few pedigrees interest me more than Street Boss runners getting in turf sprints, and he's meeting a decent bit of potential pace in here, so maybe he's outrun early and gets a finishing trip right out of the box.
#6 Sharp Double Edge He showed some good pace when pressing the speed in the debut, and he figures to get involved in the early going again here. Guessing he can take a step forward with that last one under his belt?
#3 Lapis Laz He makes a lot of sense in here as he gets back on the grass after an even kind of effort racing on the main track last time out, and I love that he can relax just off the early splits. Would want him on the tickets.
Race Summary Boss Moon Benny might be ready to go at first asking in a race with a handful of projected forward players, so I'm hoping he's legged up enough to turn in a nice rally late with these at a square price.

                              Picks Notes
#1 Beep Beep I had pretty high hopes for him off the maiden win, but he didn't come through with allowance company prior to finishing up the track in the Risen Star. He's a better fit back with these, and he might be able to get a cozy trip while saving ground from the fence.
#9 Charge the Line He's fast enough to get in the mix early here, but he has been giving away some ground late in recent races, making his suspect again in the final yards after likely having some company into the turn.
#6 Bootsie's Galaxy He doesn't have much early speed, but that might serve him well if all the pace shows up in here, and he seems like a logical player for an underneath spot.
Race Summary Hoping someone can come calling late in a race where there are a handful of sharp pace players who all draw near the outside. That early hustle might set things up for Beep Beep, who isn't likely quick enough to battle early off the bench.
