Jeremy Plonk: Stronach 5 Analysis | Friday, March 25, 2022

    March 23, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

Coming off a whopper $12,432 return last Friday, racing’s best bet – the weekly Stronach 5 – returns with another lucrative opportunity. The $1 minimum and low, 12-percent take out work together in producing overlay returns. And don’t forget to play with Xpressbet and 1/ST BET in order to take advantage of the weekly $10 Friday Free Bet offer on the Stronach 5.

Here’s a look at this week’s action as I pinch-hit for Frank Carulli, who returns next week:

LEG A: (Laurel Park, race 8, 4:19 EST) – Part of entry #1 HEARTNESS should be the horse to beat off a third-place allowance finish to next-out $100,000 Private Terms Stakes winner Shake Em Loose. You could single here and may not be wrong to do so. #9 HEFNER, like the top pick, also comes from a high-octane barn and has faced stakes-type sophomores around one turn. #2 THE ADDISON POUR should be a late threat on the scene and lightly raced with perhaps more upside than the other selections to improve.

LEG B: (Laurel Park, race 9, 4:56 EST) – Good options abound here. Spread races to me are those with multiple good horses to choose from, not poor races where you’re grab-bagging among the bottom sorts. #5 STICK IT TO THE MAN rates top choice as protected Maryland-bred won in open company maiden claimer in her debut – often a sign of a good local to follow. #4 BANDITS WARRIOR and #8 FUHGEDDABOUDIT hail from the same Jerry Robb barn and stable pilot Xavier Perez is named on both (perhaps a scratch of one?). #1 MOODY WOMAN won a similar race here two starts back and is in for the optional claiming price now due to already clearing the condition. #2 MISTY MAUVE was beaten favorite vs. similar at a mile and may fire more late at 7 furlongs with the shorter stretch (first wire in play).

LEG C: (Santa Anita, race 3, 5:06 EST) – Since #3 FORE FLAG has been beaten favorite 5 straight times, and #4 STRAUS’S PLACE has never tried turf, there are some likely well-backed horses here to stand against. I’ll do it with #7 SQUARE CAT and #8 OVER REGULATED. Trainer Brian Koriner won with 3 of 4 Santa Anita maiden starters last week and #7 SQUARE CAT has been knocking on the door sprinting. #8 OVER REGULATED has two-turn experience and upside making just his third start.

LEG D: (Gulfstream Park, race 9, 5:16 EST) – In what might be a prototype ‘single or spread’ race, this turf allowance fits the bill. The hot pace should set up for a closer, even if Gulfstream’s lawn plays to speed. #2 FINAL BELLE gets a great set-up, runs second off the layoff for old-school trainer Bill Mott and I love when a horse’s next-to-last workout is the best on the form. She’s well-drawn to rally after saving ground and should be sitting on a big race. If not her, the floodgates are wide open with multiple speed horses that you’re splitting hairs trying to figure out which one survives the pace.

LEG E: (Golden Gate, race 3, 5:25 EST) – The absolute bottom maiden claiming level can be a significant difference from other maiden-claiming levels at any track. The class drop here takes increased influence and #3 TRIBUTE TO JAZZ and #8 CAT LADY BLUES should find the lack of competition most to their liking.

    Suggested $1 Ticket

    Leg A: 1,9,2
    Leg B: 5,4,8,1,2
Leg C: 7,8 / single if either scratches
Leg D: 2 / alternates in case of scratch 8,11
Leg E: 3,8 / alternates in case of scratch 7,6

    COST: $60

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Fair Grounds for March 25, 2022

            By: Aaron Halterman

It’s another Friday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the late sequence on the card! We will also have full card selections for Oaklawn Park and Fair Grounds for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s see if we can get this home today.

            Gulfstream Park March 25, 2022

            Race 6: Starter Allowance

#2 Miss Delicious was a winner last time out in the claiming ranks, and moves up in class running first off the claim for Klesaris, which is a good sign. #1 Act Like Artie will get back to the turf for this race today, which looks to be her best surface.

            Race 7: Claiming
            freestar

#1 Tuwaim was a nice winner over this track last time out by a nose, and is spotted in a very logical race today to make it two in a row. #3 Proud Contender also was a winner last time out over this track; however, that was against maiden claiming horses.

            Race 8: Starter Allowance

#7 Unprecedented will look for his third straight victory today at this class level and over this synthetic course. #3 Harrys Ontheloose can pull an upset today if he moves up running for Walsh for the first time today. He has run well over this synthetic surface, which will help his chances.

            Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Gather as You Go won in gate to wire fashion impressively last time out, and looks to be ready to move up the class ladder in this spot. #2 Final Belle was fourth last time out, but that was her first race after a long layoff, and she should run a better race today.

            THE TICKET

            $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 1,2 / 1 / 2,3,5,7 / 2,3,5,6,8,11 – $24

Aqueduct Picks: Not much Risk Taking on March 25
              By J.N. Campbell

              Aqueduct Picks - Friday, March 25, 2022

              Race 1: 4-2-3-1
              Race 2: 2-1-3-6
              Race 3: 1-2-6-4
              Race 4: 6-8-1-4
              Race 5: 3-2-9-6
              Race 6: 4-5-7-6
              Race 7: 8-4-1-5
              Race 8: 5-3-6-4
              Race 9: 1-7-5-6
**Most Likely: Impazible Donna #8 (Race 7)**
**Best Value: Eucharist #2 (Race 2)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Impazible Donna #8, 5/2):

Here is a seasoned mare by Mission Impazaible that has not won since January ’21. That isn’t a reason to not back her because I believe trainer Bruce Levine has her pointed in the proper direction. This class level is clearly appropriate, and maybe she just has not gotten the right trip. Levine could use a win at the AQU Meet, and he might get it with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons. He was on her back on 27 Feb., and she rated impressively at 12/1 on the tote. That 2nd place finish portends good things to come.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #8

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 2: Eucharist #2, 10/1):

Trainer Ray Handal continues to have a strong Winter Meet at “The Big A,” and he claimed this gelding by Flatter for himself last month. Handal is a savvy guy, having honed his trade at a number of fabulous establishments. I trust his eye, and this runner can handle the open company. Even though last out he lacked the necessary drive down that was needed, that doesn’t mean that he cannot bounce back in this spot. Using his regular go-to-guy, Dylan Davis (who is riding exceedingly well), this could be the overlay of the day at 10/1. Let’s hope it holds. I am a big fan of Ten Strike Racing, who was a part-owner, and that makes me think that Handal is onto something …

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

              Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 1/8th, OC62.5kn2x, 3+):

Here is an interesting 2-turn contest that pits a Todd Pletcher uncoupled entry against one of Chad Brown’s Derby Trailers from last year. With a total of 7 drawn-in, most bettors will be hard-pressed to nab a winner outside of these 3. With good reason … Pletcher’s pals include the short-priced Vindictive #3, and at 2/5 on the M/L, there is probably not much value in backing this son of Uncle Mo. He certainly has some solid class lines, having run already at all 3 NYRA courses. But it has been since September that he actually won a race. The layoff (since 27 Nov @AQU) is a concern, and that might be his weakness. Certainly, Pletcher has the ability to get horses ready, but it is interesting to find Too Boss #4 entered as well. This son of El Padrino did not measure up last out in a similar, and I am having a hard time believing that he can win in this spot. Manny Franco continues to ride well during the 2nd half of this Meet, but he is going to need a monumental effort to celebrate in the winner’s circle. I am much more persuaded by Brown’s Risk Taking #5. The Klaravich router was against Pletcher’s #4 last time, and did not fare too well (I admit). Maybe the mile was just too short, and this kind of stretch out is just what he wants. Eric Cancel will try to get him into position early, with a great shot to score. One other runner that strikes some interest is from John Kimmel’s outfit. The Reds #6 has not been seen since the Grade 3 Ohio Derby back at Thistledown in late June of last year, and this colt by Tonalist has some Aqueduct experience to his credit. He tried the Gotham S. (G2) against Weyburn and Crowded Trade, before moving on to Pimlico (Tesio S.), and Belmont (P. Ridge G3). Those 2 races were 2nd place finishes, but I would not say it was comforting … he was pretty short on the tote both times. Still, he could come off-the-bench, ready to fire … let’s use this one … Here is the play!

              Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 5 w 3/4/6 w 3/4/6

DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, March 25, 2022

                DRF StaffMar 24, 2022

12:15 TAM 1st HIMELSTEIN (#5, 5-2) certainly looks like the controlling speed against these five rivals in the opener, and he's also an upgrade candidate on the class drop from an open $6,250 claimer; will be tough to reel in if he can shake loose and back down the fractions. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:20 AQU 1st DINI'S DESTINY (#2, 3-1) debuted at this level for a trainer who tends to give her firsters a start for the experience and that appeared to be the case with this filly, who was far back outrun early after steadying at the start, before making a game late run to just miss third; makes her second start right back at the same level off the claim. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:33 GP 2nd DREAMING OF AUDREY (#1, 4-1) in career best form off the claim for red hot barn, can take another with repeat of last pair. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:01 GP 3rd WITH LIBERTY (#1, 9-2) caught a killer last time but has shown enough promise to give one more chance especially if able to take control early from inside post. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:17 TAM 5th MINNESOTA LUCKY (#1, 8-1) and FLY FLY AWAY are the two main speeds in this field, and if this pair can avoid a race-long duel up front they can complete a two-speed exacta. The former gets the nod because he has proven he can rate, and he ran a huge race in defeat last time when he prompted the pace from the start and held well for the show. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:33 OP 4th IGNITIS (#2, 4-1) was third to a stakes-bound winner last out and on the cutback to one turn looking for this one to be strong through the stretch. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:09 GP 7th DEMOCRACY (#5, 5-1) has been freshened a bit since another good showing at this level and seems to be training well for the return. Shaky nod at a fair price. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:27 AQU 7th SECRET LOVE (#4, 4-1) was making her first start back from a long layoff here last month when chasing from the rail and weakening late; showed some potential early on while winning her debut and then taking the Franklin Square a couple of starts later; didn't run poorly at all in her final two starts before that layoff while only second-best both times; can have one more with the return out of the way. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:04 OP 7th GO WEST (#7, 7-2) has earned Beyer Speed Figures in the 80s in two of his last three starts, and one came at this mile and a sixteenth trip. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:06 SA 3rd OVER REGULATED (#8, 5-1) is racing into shape, and gets the call to win third time out. After a dirt-sprint debacle first out, he improved a ton when sent long on turf. The son of Grazen steadied at the half, dropped back, then ran on late to miss by less than four lengths. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:10 TUP 4th HARROVIAN (#7, 4-1) was stuck on the rail in his last two and still ran OK. Today's draw is much better and this gelding doesn't face much. Weight break helps tactical speed. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:29 LRL 10th LAKE NAKURU (#2, 9-2) goes turf to dirt after just missing in Fair Grounds conditioned claimer last week. Trainer Lynn Cash likes to strike while the iron is hot (4 for the last 12, 33%, $2.66 ROI when returning in a week or less) and his charge wasn't embarrassed for $30,000 on dirt two back. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:30 MED (Harness) 4th P L OSCAR (#7, 5-2) should be firing to the front and this group could have a hard time catching him. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:00 YR (Harness) 7th KEEP ROCKIN A (#4, 7-2) paced a huge back half and just came up a little short last week upon arrival; Cullipher trainee draws a bit better in this six-horse affair and seems primed for a victory. – Matt Rose | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:30 WBS (Harness) 8th MISSION THREE (#1, 8-1) was buried with pace last week until they reached the tote board and he likely would have won had he found room earlier. I’ll side with him here in his second start off the Auciello claim. – Garnet Barnsdale

                  RACE 2: RUNABOUT (#3)

#6 Crypto Cash is the horse to beat in this $16k claimer even as his connections dump him in for this price tag after he just missed by a nose for $32k last time out. He was only claimed for $16k back in January, so perhaps this is just a realistic assessment. My issue with him is that I haven’t been thrilled with either of his performances for the Atras barn. He was somewhat disappointing when bet down to favoritism two back. And last time he worked out a great trip to lead at midstretch before getting nosed out at the wire. There isn’t a ton of pace signed on in this six-horse field to set up his late run, so I’m not inclined to take him at a short price. The problem is that his main rival #1 Chris and Dave is hardly a reliable alternative. After getting claimed for $50k by Linda Rice in October, he’s struggled to finish his two races for this barn. He was admittedly overmatched in one of those when put in for an $80k tag in November. However, now his claiming tag is getting slashed in half for the second time in a row. He was eased for $40k last time and now Linda is just begging someone to take him of her hands. He should play out as the controlling speed here, but he’s hard to take at what could be a relatively short price. I prefer #3 Runabout, who is moving up in class. This gelding is easily the most trustworthy runner in this race. He doesn’t always win, but he usually shows up with a respectable effort. He showed no ill effect from a 6-month layoff when he returned earlier this year, and I like the confidence being displayed as he’s bumped up in class off the claim. Trainer Jeffrey Englehart is 5 for 10 (50%, $2.86 ROI) first off the claim at Aqueduct at this current meet. This horse also has the tactical speed to work out a stalking trip in a paceless race.

WIN: #3 Runabout, at 5-2 or greater

                  RACE 3: SOLIB (#5)

If you want the speed in a race without much pace, #2 Towering Orbit is the one for you. She possesses plenty of early zip, but she’s had trouble finishing off her races at this level. This filly picked up some minor awards over the winter, but is coming off one of her poorer efforts when fading to fourth last time. She did get involved in a quick pace that fell apart that day, and is unlikely to face as much early pressure here. She goes out for a barn that has had a strong meet, and is arguably the horse to beat given the pace scenario. I just can’t take another short price on her. #4 Captivating Caraearned a speed figure that makes her competitive here when second at this level two back. She didn’t quite replicate that when she came back just 7 days ago, but she was meeting a tougher field. All three of the horses who beat her in that spot would probably be favorites in this race. She now gets a rider upgrade to Dylan Davis and has the tactical speed to sit right off Towering Orbit early. The only issue is that she'll be a fraction of the price she was in her last two starts. I want to get a little more creative for my top pick. #5 Solib, the lone 3-year-old in this field, improved with each start last year as a juvenile. The switch to turf may have had something to do with it, but it would seem that she’s just matured in the overall sense. She was a little green and very wide in her lone dirt start, a race run after a heavy Saratoga downpour. That performance may not be a true indication of her dirt ability. It’s not as if she’s bred to only handle turf, as her dam was actually best on the dirt. She may want to go longer than this, and some might say it’s just a prep for a turf race. Yet she has upside in a race where we’ve already seen what many others have to offer, and she may possess the speed to be forwardly placed.

WIN: #5 Solib, at 7-2 or greater
                  USE: 2,4

RACE 7: MY ROXY GIRL (#3)

I have no major knocks against the likely favorite #8 Impazible Donna, who is the logical horse to beat. She seemed to take a step forward with blinkers added last time. She was more engaged in the middle portion of the race, ranging up outside of the leaders and taking over before Betsy Blue ran by her in deep stretch. The only problem with taking her off that effort is that she was 12-1 last time you have to accept a fraction of that price here as her good form is totally exposed. It’s not as if her best efforts give her a massive advantage over the other logical contenders, but she does seem primed for another strong performance. I prefer her to the other horses exiting that same race. #4 Secret Love has a right to improve second off the layoff, but she was dull last time and may just not have stepped forward since her 3-year-old season. #1 Beautiful Karen is always dangerous as the controlling speed, but she rarely wins race and has a tendency to cough up leads in deep stretch. I want to go in a different direction with #3 My Roxy Girl, who drops in class from the open N1X level. She actually ran well for that condition two back when getting a wide trip on Jan. 20, a day that seemed to favor rail runners. She didn’t fare as well last time, but that race was dominated by the improved Kept Waiting, as all of the horses chasing outside seemed to be spinning their wheels. I think she’s better than that, and she would be awfully formidable here if she could run back to any of her prior efforts from earlier in the winter. She was probably best on Jan. 8 when getting a rough trip, and this is her first start against NY-breds since then.

WIN: #3 My Roxy Girl, at 3-1 or greater
                  USE: 1,8
