I am sure that this Jim Ryerson runner ridden by Manny Franco will get hammered at the windows. I don’t see 4/1 holding up because in the colt’s last race, just off-the-claim from Brad Cox, he ran-on impressively against OC50k open company. He might not be as short a price as he was that day, but you never know. Ryerson is a quality NY conditioner, and I would not be surprised if he takes this group of state breds to the cleaners.

Best Value Play: Race 2: Tale of Mineshaft #6 (9/2)

Trainer Linda Rice has solid numbers off-the-claim, and even though her “win” record at the Winter Meet was not up to scratch, she certainly gave it her best … despite a multitude of “distractions.” I have not tipped many of her runners lately because they just do not seem that “live.” Here is a colt by … you guessed it … Mineshaft, that is dropping to a more appropriate level. The break in class is splendid, and we all know there can be a difference between Clm35knL3 and a Clm25nL3 … Maybe the difference will be reflected in the 2 results because the last time this runner was seen, he did not do well. The best news is that Dylan Davis gets the call, and his riding (much like his father’s) can be textbook … and at a high level. That’s how he made leading rider at the Winter Meet!

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Dirt, 6F, OC62.5n2x, F&M 3+)

The “spotlight” on this Thursday card at Aqueduct is a tough nut to crack to start the shortened Spring Meet. The track set-up over the last week looked to be pretty fair to my eye, as I was alongside the rail for many of the races. Speed held when it needed to … and some closers were able to assert themselves at the right time down the lane. No golden rails to be had here, Andy Serling … In this spot, I particularly like the look of Ray Handal’s Rossa Veloce #7. This filly was against of a field of 5 others back on 4 March, and she ended up getting outkicked in the end—3rd. As you will see in a “Feature Story,” I have coming out next week, Handal knows how to recalibrate, and make the necessary changes when it is needed. This daughter of Girolamo is elevating at the right time, and she could be sitting on a big race. The young worker, Jalon Samuel gets the call, and Handal uses him regularly. A couple of other runners that are worth a look are Natalia Lynch’s Halo City #4, and Chris Englehart’s Eloquent Speaker #3. Both runners are owned by a single individual, but their prices on the tote will be very different. Lynch is still relatively new to conditioning on her own, but she is a quick study. This entry is her top earner of all-time, but she has only been a trainer for just under a couple of years. The mare by Commissioner has the chance to bounce back, especially after such a dismal effort against similar females back in December. She is a much better runner than that race reflects. As for Englehart’s daughter of Flatter, she is going to be well-bet because even though her last dash was less than stellar, her recent form speaks to something much different. Lynch actually trained this runner back on December off a claim from John Kimmel, and she almost won a “Non-G” against some tough state bred co. It will be interesting to see how well she runs against her now-rival trainer. Here is the bet that I feel most comfortable with …

Trainer Tamara Levy has a solid runner in her barn that looks the part this time around. With a bunch of OC20k-type races under this filly’s saddlecloth, I think she has what it takes to get the job done in this spot. The 4-yr-old has a pair of wins to her credit, one of them by just a head bob. Jockey Chantal Sutherland rides well for Levy, even if it is not on a regular basis. If this filly hovers around 3/1, then I am going for the gusto with a hefty wager. Let’s go get this one …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Eagle Chief #2, 12/1):

If you are looking for a major play on Thursday (and you should be), then I would not hesitate to back this runner from the Tharrenos Barn. A former runner in both John Sadler and Mike Maker’s keep, this 4-yr-old gelding by super sire Into Mischief looks poised … as in looking up! He gets one of the best all-time turf riders in the world … Javier Castellano … and even though his figs on the grass are not quite where they once were, he is by no means off his game. I like the price, the pedigree, and the style of a turf jockey like this one.

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 6: AW, 1m70yds., OC16k, 3):

Taking to the Tapeta surface, it is looking more-and-more like equine fatalities can be lessened overall by the use of this surface. That is coming from scientists who gather data, and not gossip around the 2nd Floor ticket machines. I picked this race because it has a decent field of 7, and I particularly like the look of Victor Barboza’s Cashier Check #7. With 6 starts to his credit, he has already broken his maiden, and has 4 others in-the-money efforts. The presence of Jose Ortiz is comforting, and I would not be surprised if he tries to steal the show. After this top pick, I am inclined to back Antonio Sano’s Birdman Richie #3. This gelding by Noble Bird was in the Larry Rivelli’s outfit, before coming over to Sano’s 2-races back. He has not gotten on very well in this company, but I do like the rider change to Tyler Gaffalione. He has the ability to “check” the Ortiz Bros. and their hegemony. Let’s use one more … and we cannot forget about Fausto Gutierrez and his abilities. With a young colt by Protonico (Medina Spirit’s sire), he certainly has a contender on his hands with Protonic Power #1. Miguel Vazquez gets the call, and maybe these 2 can take a trip to the winner’s circle on Championship Week. Let’s use all three of the aforementioned routers. Should be a fun one to wager on …

#7 Mystic Lancelot is the one to beat in this spot from a speed figure standpoint, while it is a good sign Saez jumps aboard, with the horse coming off of a long layoff. #9 Performing Arts runs second off of the layoff today for solid connections.

Race 6: Starter Optional Claiming

#2 Volte Face nearly won over this surface last time out, and gets Saez back aboard in this spot, which is a good sign. #3 Birdman Richie was third at this level two starts back when facing similar horses. He can win if he bounces back from a poor effort last time out.

Race 7: Starter Optional Claiming

#2 Trappezoid was a nice winning for this track last time out and also at this distance, but must move up in class for this race. #7 Brasstown will look to make it two in a row after winning at this level and distance last time out.

Race 8: Claiming

#6 Basilia runs first off of the claim for Tharrenos in this spot, and gets Saez aboard, which is a good sign the horse is ready to roll. #2 Winter Princess runs second off of the layoff in this spot, while running for the Klesaris barn for the first time today.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Newcastle, Pakenham, Kyneton, Ipswich and Ascot.

NEWCASTLE: RACE 5 @ 3:40 PM

STELLAR PERFORMER (4) drops in grade after contesting a Midway at Rosehill last start. The win prior at this track was strong and after scratchings she looks very well placed to be winning here. SACRAMENTO JOE (2) has trialled in between runs and was a strong on-pace winner at Gosford before a let-up. Provided the stable have him fit enough, he should be competitive. ROSOVO (6) finished strongly to score by a nose here last start and looks suited stepping up in trip. THEO LEGION (15) is consistent and should be thereabouts again.
SELECTIONS: Stellar Performer to win.

PAKENHAM: RACE 4 @ 7:15 PM

GOLDEN VITRINE (4) looks the one to beat. He was highly fancied on debut at Sandown-Hillside but could only manage 4th after having a god run. Prepared to give him another chance off the stylish jump-outs and with the race experience under his belt. O'LUCKY (1) boxed on well at this circuit last start and looks ready to break through. He draws wide but looks a danger. STAR PATROL (6) has won three trials leading into this first up run. He failed on debut at Hawkesbury but has a host of gear changes today. AND SHE WAS (8) should be running on late and can run a place.
SELECTIONS: Golden Vitrine to win.

KYNETON: RACE 6 @ 4:00 PM

CITALEON (1) raced on the speed in scoring a narrow but solid win last time. Drops in weight this time and is expected to give this a shake. ANGLIAN (4) resumed with an excellent performance at Bendigo. Is going to take benefit from the outing and a forward showing is on the cards. Has to be respected. TYDEUS (2) is resuming from a break and in new stable. Has the ability and first-up should not be left out of discussions. LIVE IN HOPE (5) failed to fire first-up but will strip fitter here. Did win maiden here in December and is worth keeping in mind.

HARROW looks like being a big player in this small field having had a reappearance run under his belt a month ago.

That was in a minor event at Kempton in which he was beaten by rival Blue Trail who he faced again on Thursday.

Harrow landed three wins from seven runs last year and he was only edged out by a nose in that reappearance run.

He’s likely to be sharper and dominate the ratings.

BLUE TRAIL benefited from his latest run at Kempton not really getting up to a strong gallop.

He got the win over Harrow which made it back to back successes for the youngster.

He is pushed up a long way here at this higher level. While there should be more he will likely need improvement to topple Harrow once again.

MR PROFESSOR is the pick of the rest, for this very interesting Stakes fixture at Chelmsford City on Thursday.

Mr Professor won three times last year and there has been solid stuff in defeat from him this season.

He was last seen in a Listed race in France and will have the cheekpieces for the first time.

Tip: Harrow 7/4

CUBAN BREEZE has gone very well this season for his new yard and another bold run is expected from her.

There was a course and distance win for Cuban Breeze In February and she landed her second success of the season with a score at Wolverhampton two weeks ago.

Cuban Breeze is flying up the ratings and has to deal with an extra 7lb on Thursday, but she is thriving right now.

ATIYAH warrants some respect because she has banked some solid performances this season, despite failing to get a win.

Atiyah will move to the Polytrack for the first on Thursday and she looks to push on from a credible fourth in a Southwell handicap three weeks ago.

SHAMSHON can’t be counted out of this one after finishing a nice turn of form for a place finish at Lingfield a month ago.

He hasn’t quite hit the type of form that saw him win three times last year. But Shamshon looked competitive last time out and could offer more.

Tip: ATIYAH 6/1

TEMPLBREDIN looked sharp in landing a runner up on his latest run. There is a caveat to that.

That was in April last year so he’s been away for the best part of a year.

But this is a really thin field that he is opposing on Thursday.

Also, Templebredin comes in for his first run for a new and top yard, so there’s every chance that he will be ready.

LORD SPARKY has been nice and consistent lately. The pick of his form was a victory at Huntington in December by ahead.

He has been in the places in each of his last three races, both times having gone as the favourite.

While that winning touch has just been missing for Lord Sparky, he will likely be very competitive once again.

MIDNIGHT MOSS gets on the shortlist as he returns with the cheekpieces on for the first time.

His yard is in form as well which could give him an edge.

There was a good effort from him after a huge absence 42 days ago at Fontwell even though he was pulled up.

That’s excusable on his first run since landing a score in February 2020. He should be better for the effort.

MISS AMEILA came on very strong in chasing last season, scoring three times over the fences.

It’s been a while since she has scored and Miss Amelia has her first run in 9 months on Thursday.

But Miss Amelia is in action for a winning yard and top jockey Brian Hughes has been booked, which could be telling.

ROSE SEA HAS scored a win at Fontwell in a chase fixture a couple of weeks ago.

There’s been what looks like a fair 3lb rise for that winning effort.

She’s largely been consistent all the way and could have a reasonable shout at a follow-up.

CRACK DU NINIAN lost his rider at Bangor on his latest run, unseating mid-race.
