Top Horse Racing Picks for Saturday, April 30, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

We assess ten stakes races split between two tracks—Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita Park—for your Saturday horse racing wagering pleasure.

Those ten include a Grade III turf run at Golden Gate, as well as a single Grade III run followed by three Grade II races at Santa Anita. As the philosophers point out so eloquently, “Booyah!”

Be sure to check out the latest odds—as well as the full race-cards of both tracks—with a visit to one of our vetted horse racing online betting sites.

        Good luck!
My Saturday Picks for Golden Gate Fields
Race six — the California Derby

This is a $100,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles all-weather track run for three-year-olds. I have to agree with the morning line: Bet on the 9/5 favorite Cabo Spirit, ridden by top jockey Joe Bravo.

In a six-horse field, this ridgling is in real standout in this six-horse field, finishing in the money six times in his ten career starts, two of those wins, including the Eddie Logan Stakes (Listed) in January.
Cabo Spirit also notably finished third out of ten in the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (Grade III) last November at Del Mar, and second in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (Grade III) in February here at Santa Anita.

Twenty-year horse racing veteran George Papaprodromou trains Cabo Spirit for Kretz Racing LLC.
Race seven — the Golden Poppy Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles turf run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’ll call this one for morning-line favorite, Avenue de France, with Assael Espinoza in the irons.

This five-year-old French import moneyed ten of her 17 career starts, winning five, including the Luther Burbank Stakes (Black Type) last August and the Miss America Stakes (Black Type) in December.

Avenue de France also finished third out of seven in the Megahertz Stakes (Grade III) at Santa Anita in January.

Leonard Powell trains Avenue de France for the Benowitz Family Trust, Convergence Stables LLC, Madaket Stables LLC, Wonder Stables, and Mathilde Powell.
Race eight — the California Oaks

This is a $75,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles all-weather track run for three-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the morning-line’s second-favorite, Anthonys Cleopatra, with veteran jockey Frank T. Alvarado aboard.

This filly moneyed all three of her career starts, winning two. She also posted solid speed figures for all three runs.

Longtime horse racing veteran Tim McCanna trains Anthonys Cleopatra for owner-breeder Cacchiotti Ranch. McCanna has put Alvarado in the irons for all three of Anthonys Cleopatra’s races.
Race nine — the San Francisco Mile Stakes (Grade III)

This is a $250,000 purse, one-mile turf race for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 10/1 sleeper, Indian Peak, piloted by veteran jockey Irving Orozco.

While this 14-horse field has no dearth of horses with good “back in the day” stories to tell, this five-year-old gelding is still on the street, collecting paychecks. For the record, Indian Peak finished in the money 13 of his 26 career starts, winning six.

While that might not be impressive, I should note that the morning-line favorite, Vanzzy, hasn’t won anything tougher than an allowance race since July of 2020.
Indian Peak, on the other hand, finished third of seven in the Seabiscuit Handicap (Grade II) at Del Mar last November, and second (in a field of eight) in the San Simeon Stakes (Grade III) at Santa Anita just two months ago.

Oh, and he won the California Flag Handicap (Black Type) at Santa Anita last October.

Ruben D. Alvarado trains Indian Peak for owners Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber.
Race ten — the Lost in the Fog Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, six-furlong all-weather track run for three year-olds and upward. I don’t see any reason to disagree with the morning line here: Buy a win ticket on the 3/1 favorite, Bettor Trip Nick, ridden by Evin A. Roman.

This five-year-old bay gelding finished int eh money 12 of his 17 career starts, winning seven. That includes his most recent run—the El Dorado Shooter Stakes (Black Type) here at Golden Gate in late February.

Rising star Jonathan Wong trains Bettor Trip Nick for owners Gary Oetman and Ray Pagano.
Race eleven — Camilla Urso Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, five-furlong turf run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m calling this one for another Jonathan Wong horse—the third-favored (at 5/1) Dynasty of Her Own, with Evin A. Roman in the irons.

This five-year-old dark bay mare moneyed 15 of her 21 career starts, winning eleven. While her two stakes wins were in 2020, in this otherwise unremarkable field of 12 she has the best 2022 success stories to tell.

Wong trains Dynasty of Her Own for Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC.
Saturday Picks for Santa Anita Park
Race four — the Kona Gold Stakes (Grade III)

This is a $100,000 purse, 6-1/2 furlong dirt track race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 8/5) Miles Ahead, with veteran jockey Victor Espinoza in the irons.

This five-year-old dark bay gelding finished int eh money 15 of his 21 career starts, winning eleven, including his two most recent. Notably, he also won the Smile Sprint Invitational Stakes (Grade III) at Gulfstream Park last July. His speed figures give him a very slight edge on the favorite.

Thirty-year horse racing veteran Brian J. Koriner trains Miles Ahead for Jay Em Ess Stable.
Race six — Californian Stakes (Grade II)

This is a $200,000 purse, 1-1/8 miles dirt track race for four-year-olds and upward. There are some very fine horses in this short field of five, but I’m sticking with the 4/5 morning line favorite: Express Train, ridden by Victor Espinoza.

This five-year-old bay gelding finished in the money 14 of his 17 career starts, winning seven. Those victories include his four most recent runs: the San Antonio Stakes (Grade II) in December, the San Pasqual Stakes (Grade II) in February, and the Santa Anita Handicap (Grade I) in March.

Horse racing veteran John A. Shirreffs trains Express Train for C R K Stable LLC.
Race ten — the Santa Margarita Stakes (Grade II)

This is a $200,000 purse, 1-1/8 miles dirt track run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. While I believe the 6/1 sleeper Blue Stripe is worth a value show ticket and could very well provide us with an upset, I’m backing the 5/2 favorite, Miss Bigly, with Ramon A. Vazquez in the irons.

This six-year-old bay mare finished in the money 21 of her 27 career starts, winning eight. Those victories include the Bayakoa Stakes (Grade III) at Oaklawn Park in February.

Philip D’Amato trains Miss Bigly for owners Agave Racing Stable, Living The Dream Stables, LLC, and Rockin Robin Racing Stables.

Incidentally, the Argentinian import Blue Stripe aced two graded stakes races—the Arturo R. y Arturo Bullrich (Grade II) in March of 2021, and the Criadores (Grade I) in May of 2021—both at the Hipodromo Argentino De Palermo. The only reason he isn’t my sleeper pick for the win is his mid-pack seventh-place finish in his US debut race, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Grade I) in November.
Race eleven — Charles Whittingham Stakes (Grade II)

This is a $225,000 purse, 1-1/4 miles turf run for three-year-olds and upward. Looks like the morning line is right again: Bet on the 9/5 favorite, Beyond Brilliant, with Victor Espinoza aboard.

This four-year-old bay colt moneyed eight of his eleven career starts, winning three, including the Hollywood Derby (Grade I) at Del Mar last November. In fact, he’s moneyed three of his last four races, with that Grade I win wedged in between a third in the Twilight Derby (Grade II) in October and a second in the Santa Anita Mathis Mile Stakes (Grade II) in December.
This is a talented and experienced field of seven, but Beyond Brilliant has proven that he knows how the lawn gets mowed.

Incidentally, he hasn’t posted less than a triple-digit speed figure since last August.

John A. Shirreffs trains Beyond Brilliant for C R K Stable LLC.

            #6
Churchill Downs Picks: Under the Twin Spires, opens on April 30 ... with new Matt Winn Turf Course
            By J.N. Campbell

Churchill Downs Picks - Saturday, April 30, 2022

            Race 1: 3-5-1-2
            Race 2: 5-7-1-2
            Race 3: 1-4-3-6
            Race 4: 7-5-1/1A-4
            Race 5: 3-5-1-4
            Race 6: 4-3-6-2
            Race 7: 5-9-10-4
            Race 8: 6-9-10-2
            Race 9: 1-5-2-3
            Race 10: 5-6-1-9
**Most Likely: Mucho Macho Momma #3 (Race 5)**
**Best Value: Grandeur #7 (Race 4)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 5: Mucho Macho Momma #3, 7/2):

When it comes to Dallas Stewart at Churchill Downs … it is a match made in heaven. The wily conditioner might not always have the best “numbers” under the Twin Spires, but he is going to take his shots. I like this filly by Mucho Macho Man because she is dropping out of a Fair Grounds ALLW Co. contest that was mighty tough on the Stall Turf Course. Returning to the dirt @CD is something she should excel at … Last year at this time, she performed well on the stuff, and expect that to happen again. I like Rey Gutierrez in these spots because he has the ability to utilize aggressiveness, and given the “right mount,” he can score. If I get 7/2 then that qualifies as an overlay in my book.

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Grandeur #7, 8/1):

It might not look like it, but Rudy Brisset has a nice one entered in the 1st turf race on the new Matt Winn Course that looks pretty inviting. A gelding by Into Mischief, he took over the training duties on this one from Graham Motion last fall. I am not sure why the former accomplished conditioner never decided to put this one on the grass because his bloodlines look pretty solid. Brisset started working his new charge out on the Tapeta at Turfway, before shifting him down to Keeneland. I like the price off-the-bench at 8/1, and getting Florent Geroux is not too shabby a reason to back him either.

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #7 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

            Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Dirt, 6F, Roxelana S., $160k, F&M 4+):

Looking at this dash that will be burning along the backstretch, I will be pretty interested to see who garners the prize of being on the top of the tote come post time. I suspect that it will be Al Stall’s Carribean Caper #5 (and yes, it is spelled that way) because this filly by Speightstown comes in with an undefeated record … yes, that is right too! She is 5/5 for the Louisiana-based trainer, and now is looking for more. Columbine Stable and WinStar Farm got together on a deal, and expect this one to take money. However, the layoff is a major concern. You just never really know when a 3-yr-old that had major success, turns 4-yrs-old. I want to try and beat her, but I am not going to do it with Ben Colebrook’s Club Car #4. This 6-yr-old mare has just never done it for me, and I have watched her go to pieces during a race one-too-many-times. I know she has talent, but instead, I am much more interested in backing Bernie Flint’s Euphoric #1. Talk about a speedball … This filly by Frosted is an absolute reactor, and she will be a square price around 6/1. Last time out at the Fair Grounds, she just got nailed at the wire by rival Cheetara #2. I think coming into this spot at Churchill, she has had some rest, and will have Gerardo Corrales in the irons. These Frosted runners are some of my favorites, and this is the spot where she can make some moves. She has a history of winning from that rail spot, and maybe it will be hot, hot, hot, down there … Here is the wager …

            Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 1 w 5

Belmont Park Picks: All turfers after a Value Proposition on April 30
              By J.N. Campbell

Belmont Park Picks - Saturday, April 30, 2022

              Race 1: 4-6-1-5
              Race 2: 2-4-5-3
              Race 3: 3-7-6-4
              Race 4: 1-2-7-6
              Race 5: 6-9-3-10
              Race 6: 8-2-9-7
              Race 7: 8-3-6-2
              Race 8: 7-3-4-10
              Race 9: 7-6-3-8
              Race 10: 6-8-1-11
**Most Likely: Dame Time #8 (Race 6)**
**Best Value: Harvard #8 (Race 7)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Dame Time #8, 5/1):

I know that you might not see it at first, but this filly by Into Mischief (now trained by Michelle Nevin) is going to be the one to back in this longer sprint on the grass. She was previously in the barn of the excellent Kelsey Danner, and that means she was doing well. Danner had this female over the winter for Nevin, and she was 2nd on the AW at Gulfstream against some sturdy foes … MSW60k. Now, back at Belmont, I think she will fire with Trevor McCarthy aboard. He has already had a good couple of days at the young Meet, and should be a solid bet at a square price. Exiting the gate cleanly will be key …

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #8

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Harvard #8, 8/1):

I do love it when a runner from Oaklawn ships to Belmont this time of year. I am sure that this Rudy Brisset runner will get overlooked, but that will be a mistake … I liked this colt by Pioneerof the Nile when she ran in Hot Springs because it was up against tough company in an OC50kn2x and an OC62.5kn3l. Francisco Arrieta did not get to visit the Larry Snyder Winner’s Circle either time, but his mount showed promise. This is the right level for him to enter at Belmont, and the addition of Jose Ortiz is welcome. This 4-yr-old can handle the 1-turn, 1 1/16th, and should not be underestimated. Brisset wins … the price … shoo wee … it is going to be excellent around 8/1 … “Harr-vaard” for the score!

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #8 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 7F, Elusive Quality S., $100k, 4+):

The “feature” on this Saturday, named for an amazing turf sire, is a tough sprint on the “unique” Widener Course. A run through the form tells you that Chad Brown has the Klaravich-owned, Value Proposition #6, and we all know what that means … probably a heavy-favorite come post time. This experienced ridgling by the great Dansili (GB) comes back to a track where he has 4 wins in 7 starts. Ridden by Manny Franco, he has tactical turf capability, and that ability to “rate,” makes him dangerous. The last time he won a race, it was at Belmont in the Oyster Bay S. I doubt seriously that he will be 3/1 when this race goes off around 5:32 EST. If you are looking to take a shot against Brown, and the red-lettered “KS,” then consider Mark Casse’s Proven Strategies #3, and Steve Asmussen’s Snapper Sinclair #7. Both of these value plays have strong turf backgrounds, but in different ways. The former was quite successful down at Gulfstream Park, and is elevating in class … in other words, he is in-form. The latter, owned by the excellent Bloom Racing Stable, is finally getting back on the grass after running over in Dubai on the WC undercard. I like the prices, the jockeys aboard, and the chance to back a couple of seasoned runners like these. Here is the bet I want to construct, and it should be a good one with such a large field! Nothing like a well-drawn race for the turf …

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/6/7

                #8
DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, April 30, 2022

                DRF Staff

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:55 TAM 2nd MUTANNAAHY (#1, 8-1) took a huge step forward with the addition of blinkers, beating maiden claimers with relative ease at better than 23-1, and she can win another with a similar effort; dangerous with a clean break from the fence. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:05 GP 1st INDOMITO (#2, 20-1) worth a look at square price making second start and exiting pretty sharp main track drill for this. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:10 WO 1st SNOW SQUALL (#5, 5-1) had a productive fall campaign going long on the Tapeta and should be fit enough to make some noise in this seven-furlong sprint off five drills on the main track. Her trainer has a 10% strike rate with new acquisitions. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:42 LRL 3rd DOOMSCROLLER (#10, 5-1) tried to rally over speed-favoring tracks in two dirt appearances and exits a key race won by Candy Light (returned to finish second in the Beyond the Wire Stakes with an 80 Beyer). The dam was a Grade 2-winning dirt router, but she also won the turf debut earlier in her career. Blinkers on for barn that is 7 for the last 19 (37%, $2.81 ROI) with the move. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:08 WO 3rd CEFALO (#7, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:09 GP 3rd EXTRACTION WILL (#4, 5-1) one of only two older horses in the lineup and one to catch if hustled away to control things on turn back to 5 1/2 panels. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:28 TAM 5th FORTUNATA (#1, 15-1) is kin to five starters, and though only one was a minor winner on turf this filly's work tab suggests she'll come out running for trainer Lynn Rarick; worth a shot if overlooked some in the wagering. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:37 WO 4th BLAZING SKY (#6, 12-1) has a Tampa tightener under her girth. The 4yo could put it all together in this NW2 tilt on the Tapeta, over which she ran well in her final two 2021 outings, both under Civaci. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:57 TAM 6th BION MAGIC (#2, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:11 LRL 6th TORCH CARRIER (#5, 8-1) must take a step forward as she double-jumps in class, but the lightly-raced filly was a game winner at the bottom earlier in the month. Broke sharp, then pushed a slow pace from the outside. Forced to go three wide as the runner-up skimmed the rail, she dug down deep to prevail by the slimmest of margins. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:31 LS 3rd STAN'S GOLDEN PATH (#3, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Randy Goulding). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:40 LRL 7th BRIDGE TO SUCCESS (#9, 6-1) is a half-sister to stakes-winning dirt sprinter Tricks to Doo, a colt that was also multiple stakes-placed sprinting on grass. The dam won three turf sprints, and is a half-sister to Grade 1-winning dirt sprinter Her Smile and multiple stakes-winning turf sprinter Moon River. Ran on for a piece in dirt debut against Boss Man J J (returned to place second in a $25,000 starter with a 59 Beyer). Distance a question, but there should be enough pedigree to handle turf. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:10 LRL 8th KRUG (#1, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:42 WO 8th HOWDYOUMAKEURMONEY (#6, 9-2) might be poised to run a big one in her third start off the shelf after a third-place finish in a stakes over Turfway's Tapeta. Trainer Mike Trombetta won a stakes here opening weekend with a sharp Arzak. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:51 GP 8th MANUELA (#1, 8-1) back where she belongs and taken to move forward off much needed try last time. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:22 GP 9th SEPTEMBERTEN (#7, 6-1) finally slips in with state bred company after steady diet of open company races. Not badly beaten in key race under straight starter conditions last time, should find this group more to his liking. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:39 OP 8th CUMBERLAND AVENUE (#2, 6-1) was third two back to Greeley and Ben, who has since run third in the Grade 3 Whitmore at Oaklawn and also won a $62,500 optional claiming sprint with a Beyer Speed Figure of 94. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:40 WBS (Harness) 3rd SUNDOWN KID (#8, 15-1) missed a week before his last start and now he comes back in seven days. He is capable of beating these if he gets put into play and a big speed try could be coming here; call to upset. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:15 YR (Harness) 5th WAR DAN DELIGHT N (#6, 6-1) raced once at Yonkers against $40,000’s on March 22 and is back tonight after competing in their NW7500L5 class. He starts out of the Peter Tritton barn for the second time and picks up Stratton at the bottom level tonight. – Greg Reinhart | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:35 MED (9th) J M MANDAMIN (#7, 3-1) gets gifted a spot in this race as he was written in on the “NW 1 race in 2022” condition. Last week’s race versus much better should have him tight and I’d expect a wire-to-wire attempt. – Derick Giwner |

Rocket Picks : Churchill Downs, Santa Anita, and Belmont Park for April 30, 2022
                  By: Aaron Halterman

The Kentucky Derby is now ONE WEEK away. You know it’s getting close when Churchill Down opens, which is what is happening today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Belmont Park for the late sequence on the card. We will also have full card selections for Churchill Downs opening night and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s go!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Belmont Park:

                  Belmont Park April 30, 2022

                  Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Southern District was an impressive winner last time out and should make it two in a row in this spot. This horse could be progressing into something nice. #5 Tiergan was second in a tougher starter stakes event last time out and defeated New York bred allowance runners two starts back.

                  Race 8: Allowance
                  freestar

#6 Mr Breadwinner can pull the upset today if he takes to the surface. His last race over a muddy dirt track at Aqueduct was impressive. #8 Lord Flintshire is a very consistent runner who is usually around at the end with a chance. He fits in well this this class level and his only win came over this track.

                  Race 9: Elusive Quality Stakes

#6 Value Proposition was a solid third in a similar race to this one last time out, which was his first start off of the layoff. He should progress today. #8 Toro Strike makes his second start in this country, while also stretching out in distance today, both of which should help his chances.

                  Race 10: Maiden Special Weight

#7 Basis Risk debuts in this spot for Chad Brown, who has been fantastic with first time starters lately. This horse is working well leading up to this debut. #1 Sinful Dancer runs third off of the layoff here, which should lead to improvement, while cutting back in distance should help his chances.

                  THE TICKET

                  $.50 Pick 4 (Races 7-10) 3 / 4,6,8,10 / 3,6,8,11 / 1,7,8,11 – $32
