COMMENTS: EPICENTER has proven he can win from the front or come from off the pace as he did to top the morning line favorite ZANDON. MO DONEGAL popped a huge speed number in his last and has tremendous late pace. If jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr, can stay in touch with the leaders early, they probably will not have enough to hold him off at the end. ZANDON is another that packs a powerful late punch. He has lost to some of the projected favorites but not by much. The extra distance could be the difference. MESSIERs last race was his best speed figure, despite finishing second. 1st race – (10) Logico was second in his last two starts at Gulfstream Park and seems ready to graduate from the maiden ranks. (2) Malibu S S was bumped early in his debut, then fell back and closed fast late. Should be a main threat here. (7) Warrior Johny was second last time and fits well here. (9) Congressman tired in his debut but should benefit from that experience.
2nd race – (8) Osbourne was a good third in a stakes and should be tougher with the addition of Lasix. (4) Surfer Dude was a length ahead of the top choice and promises to be the main threat. (7) Cathedral Beach won by a nose and should be a main threat. (6) Great Escape will welcome a return to dirt.
3rd race - (7) Final Belle rallied wide and then tired. Likely to move forward here. (3) Lady Rockstar deserves a long look in her U.S. debut. (8) Talking Book can bounce back with a better effort here. (2) Community Adjusted makes her 2022 debut and cannot be ignored.
4th race – (1) McLaren Vale is a former Baffert runner who ships in from California and looks best. (10) Money Supply had traffic issues last time and is the one to fear. (12) Emirates Road graduated from the maiden ranks impressively and will welcome wet going. (8) Mendenhall will be a factor if he can duplicate his last try.
5th race – The Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, G2 - (8) Speak of the Devil makes her U.S. debut for Chad Brown and should prevail over this group. (5) Wakanaka closed fast for second last time and will be the key rival. (7) In Italian has won her last three starts and will be tough to reel in on the front end. (6) Lady Speightspeare exits a Grade 1 stakes and figures to be a factor in this field.
6th race – The Knicks Go Overnight Stakes - (2) Shared Sense rebounded with a big effort last time and should give Cox a sentimental win in a stakes named for a horse he trained. (1) A C Expressway was a troubled second last time and can complete the exacta. (7) South Bend was hurt by a wide trip on a sloppy track and should fare better here. 7th race – The Pat Day Mile, G2 - (5) Jack Christopher missed the Derby but can start off his 3-year-old season with a victory here. (11) My Prankster disappointed last time but can bounce back to top form here. (12) O Captain should relish a cutback to a one-turn test. (3) Pappacap has been facing the top 3-year-olds and merits consideration.
8th race – The Derby City Distaff, G1 - (6) Bell’s The One loves Churchill Downs and should resume her winning ways here. (2) Just Our Time is in great form and will be the top challenger. (7) Edgeway has sharp early speed and is a threat to lead throughout. (5) Obligatory seeks a third straight win and should be a stretch threat.
9th race – The American Turf Stakes, G2 - (7) Sy Dog is a perfect 3-for-3 and can keep his unbeaten record alive here. (5) Balnikhov missed by a nose in his U. S. debut and should pose the biggest threat for the top pick. (6) Portfolio Company makes his 3-year-old debut and showed enough talent at 2 to be a force here. (2) Main Event was a front-running winner last time and cannot be discounted.
10th race – The Churchill Downs Stakes, G1 - (3) Jackie’s Warrior started the year on a winning note and should prevail in this spot. (6) Prevalence seeks a third straight win and is quite capable of recording a victory. (8) Cezanne makes his debut for Pletcher and seems ready for a big effort. (1) Aloha West makes his first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and should make his presence felt in the final furlong.
11th race – The Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic, G1 - (5) Mira Mission lacked a strong enough rally at a mile but should benefit from the added ground in this field. (8) Adhamo just missed with a furious rally in his U. S. debut and will be top rival. (10) Santin has yet to turn in a poor effort but drew a tough post. (1) Ivar is classy and worth a look from the rail in his 2022 debut.
12th race – The Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, G1 - (16) Cyberknife finally put it all together with an impressive win in the Arkansas Derby and has trained sharply since then. He has the right running style for the race and gets a narrow nod in a very competitive edition of America’s most famous race. (3) Epicenter looked great in his last two wins and will be very tough to reel in during the stretch run. (10) Zandon impressed with his Blue Grass win must needs to put aside his habit of breaking slowly which could be costly here. (7) Crown Pride seems quite capable of continuing Japan’s success story in major international races.
13th race – (3) Life is Hard won his last two starts in a manner that indicates he can make it three in a row here. (8) Starrininmydreams was a distant second last time but could be closer here. (4) Rising Empire seeks a third straight win and cannot be overlooked in this field. (5) Treasury have been no worse than third in his last five starts and deserves a good look.
14th race – (11) Strobe is a firster from Cox who can close out a great card by winning in his debut. (12) Bourbon Heist seemed home free and then was caught late. Can make amends here. (7) Elite Power makes his 2022 debut and seems set for a good performance. (3) Ludwig woke up with a solid second in his second race and will be dangerous off a similar try.Comment

Pat Day Mile Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $500,000 | One Mile | Three Year Olds
Although this race runs through likely heavy betting favorite Jack Christopher (5), a phenomenon as a two year old who is returning to the races after seven months off, I will try to beat him. After a sensational debut last August, the colt easily won the Champagne Stakes at Belmont in October but then did not make any of the big two year old races thereafter. He didn’t make any of the three year old races this winter or early spring either, leading to talk he was injured, or something was amiss. Returning to training in February after three months off, Jack Christopher has been working consistently and without a doubt if he runs as he did in either of his 2021 races he can win. HOWEVER, there is an elephant in the room as there is with many a horse off for a long time and/or returning as a three year old, and particularly when considering wagering on one who is likely to be the prohibitive favorite.
Win contenders:
With so many of the horses here having taken their shots on the Road to the Derby in longer races, the horses which are proven sprinters (a one turn mile at Churchill Downs is just a long sprint). Tejano Twist (6) is one of those and he opens at 10/1. Now first or second in eight of 11 races, if we can excuse his last race (in which he finished 11th) as an aberration he has absolutely every right to win. He won the $200K Lively Shively Stakes at Churchill Downs last November as the 6 to 5 favorite and he returned off a two and one-half month rest in March to be beaten only three-quarters of a length with a 107 Equibase Speed Figure equaled only by Jack Christopher’s Champagne figure from last year. He should run very well.
My Prankster (11) has run six times, all sprints, winning three of those and finishing second in another. He won the similar Grade 3 Swale Stakes in February then took two months off then finished fourth last month, a race he can move forward off of in his second start back.
Major General (1) is the only horse cutting back in distance I can consider as a contender. He won his debut last summer sprinting then won the Iroquois Stakes around two turns here at Churchill Downs. After a poor 10th place effort following six months off, Major General rebounded to finish second in the Lexington Stakes three weeks ago after leading for most of the race. Blinkers added for that race, and/or the fact Irad Ortiz Jr. rode for the first time, are the reasons for that turnaround and with the same jockey in the saddle today Major General should have a big say in the outcome.

1st race [Clm 40000, 1 1/16 mi] – (1) Two Thirty Five (A) had a rough trip in which he got bumped, raced six-wide, battled down the stretch, and lost a head bob. (4) Lil Commissioner gets some class relief after racing against top allowance horses and drops into a claimer for the first time in almost two years. (3) Crypto Cash was claimed from his last two starts, both of which were victories. (5) Supreme Aura will stretch back out to a distance where he has two wins and on a track where he has two wins.

Kentucky Derby Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 5/7/22

Starting at 10:30 a.m. EST, we have 14 races at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day, including seven graded stakes races. Using TVG and Horse Racing Nation as a Guide, here are some of the best bets.
As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.
(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)
My Prankster and Trademark
TVG Odds: 4/1 and 20/1
Race 7 is the $500K Pat Day Mile for 3-year-olds. The TVG and HRN data projects My Prankster (4/1) and Jack Christopher (3/1) to decide the race with longshot Trademark (20/1) a viable contender.
The race has higher payoff potential, and Trademark was on the Derby Trail previously and finished fifth in the Blue Grass behind Derby favorite Zandon. He has sharp works and top value cutting back in distance.
Jack Christopher is the best horse in the race based on last year’s performances. He enters off a 7-month layoff and will be the front-runner into modest fractions.
My Prankster will be sitting off the leaders can run well on a fast or off-track and is sitting on his best race.
Jackie’s Warrior, Race 10
TVG Odds: 5/2
Race 10 is the $750K Churchill Downs Stakes for older horses racing 7 furlongs. The HRN data projects Jackie’s Warrior (5/2) to win and turn the tables on Aloha West (7/2) from last year’s Breeders Cup.
Jackie’s Warrior holds a tremendous pace advantage, and his early pace figures tower over the field. Jockey Joel Rosario should ride him to victory for the fifth time in his last six graded stakes starts.
Reinvestment Risk (7/2) is a reliable board hitter while Prevalence (6/1) is one to include if the track comes up sloppy.
Mo Donegal and Charge It, Race 12
TVG Odds: 10/1 and 20/1
Race 12 is the 148th running of the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby for 3-year-olds racing the classic 1 1/4 mile distance. A total of 20 runners are set to Run for the Roses in the $3 million race.
The top contenders, according to the TVG Derby Betting Guide are Epicenter (7/2), Zandon (3/1, Messier (8/1), Mo Donegal (10/1), Smile Happy (20/1), and Taiba (12/1), who has been taking more money leading up to the biggest race.
Simplification (20/1, Charge It (20/1), and Tiz the Bomb (30/1) are the big longshots with the best chance to cash in.Comment

With a reliable jockey who has won at a quite good 17 percent clip over the last month. This has to be one of the top choices. She has been running quite well recently while recording very solid speed figures. RJL CASHING IN - Has been running well lately and will most likely be up near the lead early on. Should go off at a big price and has some positives going for her. DASHES ON THE FLY - Could best this field based on the speed fig - 69 - of his last effort.
