The San Diego Padres have dropped the first two games of this series to the Colorado Rockies as favorites. I can't see them getting swept, so I'll back them as another short favorite here Sunday. Blake Snell is looking stronger with each start and just held the Rockies to two earned runs in six innings in his last start. Snell is now 2-0 with a 3.34 ERA in six previous starts against the Rockies. He is better than Antonio Senzatela, who is 2-3 with a 4.79 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in 10 starts this season. The Padres are 9-1 after a loss by two runs or less this season. San Diego is 24-13 in road games this season. Give me the Padres.

The San Diego Padres ended a 13-year playoff drought in 2020's 60-game season and were expected to contend for the NL West title in 2021. However, the Padres would finish 79-83, 20 games behind the first-place Giants. The Colorado Rockies also snapped a long playoff drought in 2020 (13 straight playoff-less years) but also went 79-83 in 2021. The two NL West rivals opened a three-game series at Coors Field Friday night, with San Diego rolling along at 41-24, while Colorado sat just 27-37. The Rockies took the field Friday night, having lost SEVEN straight at home, but have won the first two contests of the series, 10-4 and 5-4. I guess(?) we shouldn't have been surprised, as the Rockies have now defeated the Padres NINE straight times at Coors Field!

That said, while the 41-26 Padres are just a half-game behind the first-place Dodgers in the division, the 29-37 Rockies are in last place, 12 games back of LA. Blake Snell (0-3, 5.04 ERA) will start for the Padres on Sunday, while Colorado counters with Antonio Senzatela (2-3, 4.79 ERA). Snell will make his sixth start of the season since being activated on May 18 after recovering from a left-adductor strain. He's finished six innings in only TWO of his 2022 starts and has given up 15 runs (14 earned) on 21 hits and 13 walks with 29 strikeouts in 25 innings.

Senzatela also missed time on the injured list with a lower back strain and this will be his fourth start since returning. This marks his 11th start of the season and Colorado is just 4-6 in his first 10. He has given up 29 runs (25 earned) on 75 hits in 47 innings. He has a .375 opponents' batting average but has issued only 10 walks and three HRs. Since returning from the injured list, Senzatela is 0-1 in three starts (Rockies are 0-3), as he has allowed 10 ERs on 27 hits and two walks with 13 strikeouts in 17.1 innings for a 5.19 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP and a .355 BBA.

Senzatela has a career 7-3 record with a 3.30 ERA in 17 career appearances against the Padres. He is 5-1 against them at Coors Field in 10 games (seven starts) but he takes the mound against a VERY good team in San Diego, with the Rockies having lost his last FIVE starts (5.87 ERA) since his last win (May 5). Getting back to Snell, he turned in his second-best start of the season against the Rockies this past Sunday, allowing two ERs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over six innings and 94 pitches (no-decision in a 4-2 Colorado win). NO sweep here, as NINE straight losses at Coors is enough!.

Today’s match-up is a battle of the “also-rans”, with a pair of poor offenses facing off. KC won the opener and are 5-5 L10. The A’s have won just 2 of 10 games, scoring 2 runs or less in 5 of those. The A’s start largely untested left-hander Koenig today. With just two appearances to date, he has a very ugly ERA of 11.25, with lots of the wrong stuff given up in just 8 innings total.
He faces Brady Singer, who pitched very well in May with just 3 ER over 3 starts. He has been less impressive in June. After one very poor outing, he rebounded somewhat in his last 2 starts, allowing 5 runs in 10 innings.
The Royals have been hitting better lately, especially vs. left-handers. The A’s are struggling in all categories lately, especially offense and relief pitching. Singer has had some quality starts this year, and faces a very weak lineup. Koenig has yet to prove himself, and will get no support from the pen. Take the better team, the Royals, to win.

Reason: The Royals looking for the sweep here in Oakland today. KC took the first two games of this series, holding the A's to just one total run. Brady Singer will start today for the Royals with a 3-1 record in his six start and a 3.89 ERA. He has pitched very well in five of his six starts, allowing three runs or fewer. It's just the one start on June 3 vs the Astros where he gave up seven runs over five innings that has hurt his ERA. The Oakland A's continue to flounder, losing their 2nd game in row last night and their 15th loss in their last 17 games. Jared Koenig makes his third start of the season today for Oakland. Koenig is 0-2 with a 11.25 ERA and has yet to go past four innings in either start. He has also allowed four walks against six KO's. Looks like a high scoring contest today with Koenig on the mound.
