One of the bonuses of the Fourth of July long weekend is horse racing on a Monday. There is always horse racing on Mondays, but it’s usually reserved for the low-tier race tracks.

The Fourth of July brings some of the big players, as Belmont Park and Churchill Downs are both running. The biggest race is at Los Alamitos Race Course in California.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Late Pick 4 Analysis | Monday, July 4, 2022

The feature on the Yonkers Raceway card goes in Race 9, an Open Handicap Pace with a $39,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

1-Major Betts (9/5)-Probably needs to get on the point and to try to wire the field. From this post the chances of that happening make this Jenn B trainee a use.
5-Rolling With Sam (4-1)-Alexander claimed for $75k on 6-6, then missed a start and had the 8 hole in the next 2 races. Should get a chance to race near the top with this post draw and reward new owners.

Race 8

1-Windsun Ricky (9-1)-Has won 2 of 12 this year and when he does take a picture the formula for success is simple. Likes to get on the engine and not look back. There isn't anyone to fear in this bunch and could add some nice pop to the Pick 4 payout.
4-Shneonucrzydiamnd A (5/2)-Should enjoy the company and Dube may look to put him in play early on. Not crazy about a short price but may have met a beatable field.
6-Coalition Hanover (6-1)-Faded badly in last but will take a swing from this spot. It looked like Joe B had a choke hold on the 4-year-old in the pocket and in a blink the leader drew off and this guy went backward. This race should set-up differently. Only 13 starts so far this year so there probably are issues but worth a play here.

Race 9

5-Leonidas A (3-1)-Siegelman should have this 7-year-old lit up off the gate. Will likely get the top and will be tough to catch
but has been off since 6-11.
6-Tattoo Artist (4-1)-David Miller makes a rare Monday appearance at YR and before the Battle of Lake Erie the Artist was in very sharp form. The start will be something to watch because this 5-year-old could be leaving in a hurry as well.

Race 10

2-Escapetothebeach (7-1)-Using this price shot with the thinking Holland will leave and drop in right behind the one below. Does compete versus this company but needs a smooth trip and that could happen.
3-Shoobee Doo A (2-1)-Harrington shipper can leave as fast as the gate car and has won 2 of 8 here. Comes in with a 2-race win streak but this could be a challenge. Does like to win and from this post, with its current form is difficult to leave out.

Monmouth Park – Seventh race. Post time: 3:09 ET
7-Pass and Stow (3-1)

Loved the way this highly-promising sophomore colt broke his maiden at first asking sprinting from the rail last month, doing so while under pressure throughout but having plenty of reserve speed left in the tank enroute to a more than four length victory. The speed figure was strong, so we’re expecting this son of Medaglia d’Oro to move right up on the class ladder and win again as the likely controlling speed in this two-turn first-level allowance event. Three easy workouts since raced is another strong indicator of likely forward move by the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained sophomore. He’s 3-1 on the morning line and is a strong play at or near that price.



Los Alamitos – Eighth Race. Post time: 4:30 PT
7-Candy Caramel (4-1)

One of three from the Peter Miller barn entered in this five furlong sprint and appears the best of the trio based on several factors. The daughter of Candy Ride sports two recent five furlong gate works in 1:01 flat (both fastest of the morning) at San Luis Rey Downs to have her plenty fit to go along with a sizzling :21 flat breeze at the OBS April sale to indicate intense sprint speed. From her cozy outside draw under top rider Juan Hernandez, she looks to be extremely well-meant, so at or near her morning line of 4-1 let’s make this promising juvenile filly a win play and rolling exotic single.

DEMANDSRESPECT - Great chance for this steed. Big late speed and should have good position. A repeat of that recent performance on May 7th where she earned a speed figure of 81 looks high enough to win in this race. I look for an increased ability right here with the addition of Lasix for the 2nd time. Got to like a equine athlete who can make up a ton of ground in the stretch. This filly came flying late sprinting last time out and should relish the longer distance of today's race. PRECURSORY - This filly is in nice form. Ended up third on Jun 9th. It looks like Rosario had to come to know this filly on June 9th when riding her for the first time. Back on again today. I like this filly. Has the highest earnings per race in here today. The addition of blinks usually means that a trainer wants a thoroughbred to show more zip or to keep her attention focused. HOP PICKER - McGaughey has this filly spotted in the perfect race.

3^rd race [Md 40000, 7F] – (3) Suppressor switched from a Midwest barn of Steve Asmussen to that of Rob Atras after 11 tries to break his maiden with five top three finishes. Ownership also changed and the horse has been at Belmont since his last race in April. Atras often improves horses that are new to his barn. (2) Inspiration Point made a big improvement off the claim to finish second last time. (4) Sharpoon dropped into the claiming ranks in his third start and finished third when he was hard held in the early going. (6) Fazaro had the lead and got caught nearing the wire for a $20,000 tag at the seven furlong distance.
5^th race [Clm 16000 N2L, 7F] – (5) Trinity Titoli (C) made her second start following a layoff, dropped into the N2L condition, pressed the pace, had the lead, and finished second when she was bet down from 7-1 to 4-1. (1) Simple Sugar and (2) Game Theory traded second and third-place finishes in their last two starts and are hard to separate. Both like to press the pace. Simple Sugar gets a favorable rider change to Trevor McCarthy. (4) Handle the Truth ran behind the top choice last time and that race may have had a better field.
8^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (1) Demandrespect made her 2022 debut and finished second on a sloppy track for Chad Brown. In all three of her starts she was in fields where the top finishers came back to win their next starts. (5) Precursory gets blinkers on for Bill Mott in her third start after running fourth and then third. (4) Hop Picker was third in her second start for Shug McGaughey while stretching out in distance. (3) Don’t Overlook Me has two starts for Todd Pletcher and made improvement when she got on a dry track last time.
9^th race [Manila, 1 mi TURF] – (5) Boston Tea Party (A) was an impressive three-length winner in his debut for Tony Dutrow who is a trainer that usually does not win with firsters. That means this guy is likely to improve as he stretches out and tries stakes company. (2) Annapolis was second in his 2022 debut in the Penn Mile (G2) that was run on a SOFT turf that was more like a swamp. Last year, he won the Pilgrim (G2) on a FIRM grass course. (3) Ready to Purrform had the lead and was second in his first start of the year in the JW Murphy at Pimlico for Brad Cox. (1) Chanceux has early speed and the mile distance in this one-turn format seems ideal for this Todd Pletcher runner.
Best bets: Suppressor (3^rd); Trinity Titoli (5^th). Best value: Demandrespect (8^th); Boston Tea Party (9^th).

1st race – (4) Candy Tycoon was a game third last time and looks best. (5) Injunction comes off a solid victory and should not be ignored. (6) Keystone Field seems ready for another big try after a victorious effort. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6.
3rd race – (3) Cold as Hell should return fresh after a break and turn in a strong showing. (5) Nepotism was second in his last three starts and can complete the exacta again. (8) Mount Athos could rebound in this spot. (1) Perfect Cut should turn in a better effort without blinkers. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-5-8. Doubles: 1-3-5-8 with 2-4-5-8.
4th race – (4) Stunningly is a firster from Asmussen who could be a good one. (2) Callie’s Passion should also merit attention. (5) Brisbane Road cannot not be ignored while debuting for Amoss. (8) Naughty Gal may move forward off her debut. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-8.
8th race – (7) Cody’s Wish is a perfect 3-for-3 at Churchill Downs and can add a fourth win today. (6) Plainsman is highly consistent and is the one to fear. (1) Mish has speed from the rail and could be tough to catch. (3) Weyburn will be dangerous on his best try. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 6-7. Exactas 6-7 over 1-3 and 1-3 over 6-7. Doubles: 1-3-6-7 with 3-5-9-11.
9^th race – (9) Warrior Johny (C) dropped from 3-5 to 1-5 and won by a pole. Can make it two in row here. (3) Brigadier General looks like the one to catch in this field.
