Friday MLB Free play. My selection is on Tampa Bay over Detroit at 7:10 pm et on Friday.
While the bullpens are virtually a wash in this matchup, we do have a decisive starting pitching edge with the Rays sending Corey Kluber to the hill against Chi Chi Gonzalez of the Tigers.
Kluber has ‘turned back the clock’ this season, posting a solid 3.37 FIP and 1.15 WHIP while allowing just shy of 4.3 runs per nine innings. He’ll have the benefit of starting on a full five days’ rest after pitching on just four days’ rest in his most recent outing.
Chi Chi Gonzalez somehow continues to find starting jobs at the big league level, despite his continued poor pitching. Gonzalez checks in sporting a 6.01 FIP and 1.53 WHIP in 18 1/3 innings of work at the major league level this season. He’s allowing a whopping 6.87 runs per nine innings (small sample size I know but the rest of his career hasn’t gone much better). Take Tampa Bay.

The Chicago White Sox ended an 11-year postseason drought in 2020 with a wild card appearance. They then ran away with the American League Central title last season with a 93-69 record, winning the division by 13 games over Cleveland. Chicago was a heavy favorite to win the division in 2022 but the White Sox have so far underachieved (more in a bit). The Texas Rangers appeared in back-to-back World Series in 2010 and 2011 (lost both) but continued to be competitive, making the playoffs in THREE of the next five seasons. However, it's been FIVE consecutive losing seasons for Texas since 2017, including going 60-102 (.370) last season.
The White Sox arrived in Arlington last night for a four-game series with the Rangers, having won SEVEN of their last 10.and at 53-51, had climbed within TWO games of the AL Central-leading Twins. Chicago was also just two games back for the AL's third wild card spot, in what has become a crowded field. Texas was 41-49 at the break, putting them on pace to win 74 games, 14 more than in 2021. However, after splitting their first four games of the second half, the Rangers had lost SEVEN of 10, including just getting swept in a three-game series at home by Baltimore (Texas scored just SEVEN runs in the three games). However, the Rangers prevailed 3-2 on Thursday. Friday's pitching matchup will be Dylan Cease (11-4, 2.01 ERA) and Glenn Otto (4-7, 5.50 ERA).
Cease had a breakout season in 2021, going 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA. was just 4-3 (3.14 ERA) after 12 starts, but the White Sox were 8-4. However, he's been near-unhittable since, going 7-1 (team is 8-1) in his last nine starts, allowing only four ERs over 53.2 innings (that's an ERA of 0.67!). Otto made six starts last season, going 0-3 (team was 1-5) with a 9.26 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. His ERA is 'down' to 5.50 in 2022 and his WHIP to 1.46 but he takes the mound tonight 0-5 with a 7.11 ERA over his last seven starts (Rangers are 0-7!). The price is a little steep but Cease over Otto seems like a 'no-brainer!'

The Royals have the third-worst record in the American League at 42-64. They have lost seven of their last 10 games. They also are 3-7 the past 10 times hosting Boston.
The Red Sox are the superior team. Boston got better at the trade deadline while the Royals got worse dealing their leadoff hitter Whit Merrifield.
The reason the Red Sox are cheaply priced here is they are starting rookie Josh Winckowski. He'll be facing Zack Grienke.
Winchkowski's overall numbers aren't good. But he did have a respectable outing in last start, holding the Brewers to two runs in five innings five days ago.
Greinke is just an innings-eater at this late stage of his once great career. His July ERA in five starts was 4.50. He has a 4.41 ERA on the season. Greinke doesn't have a good track record versus Boston with a 2-5 mark and 5.09 ERA in nine career appearances, including eight starts.

I like the Kansas City Royals to win this game against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. The Red Sox haven't looked good in their games lately and they are now under .500 for the season with their loss to the Royals last night. They have been dealing with pitching issues lately, giving up a ton of runs in their games, and I think the Royals can get another win off them here. Zack Greinke (3-6, 4.41 ERA) is up for the Royals here and he has looked pretty good in his starts this year. He has looked a lot better in his previous few starts and I think he will pitch well against this Red Sox lineup that hasn't been hitting well lately. Josh Winckowski (4-5, 5.00 ERA) is up for the Red Sox here and he hasn't looked good in his starts this year. He is still in his rookie year but he didn't look very good in July giving up a ton of runs in a majority of his starts. The Royals lineup is starting to get a bit hot lately with the runs they have been putting up and I think they can put up some runs on him in this game. The Red Sox bullpen hasn't looked good lately either and I don't see them winning this game here with their recent struggles. I like the Royals to win this game.
