Belmont at the Big A Hotlist - October 16

      October 15, 2022

Today’s New York Hot List races to watch – Sunday, October 16, 2022
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

      Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
      * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

3rd race [Clm 20000, 6F] – (5) In Sky We Trust (C) was bet down to bet the favorite and lost a stretch duel by a neck. He was claimed for the fourth race in a row and new trainer Carlos Martin brings him back in just eight days. (6) Quick Return drops back into the claiming ranks after trying a top-level NY-bred allowance. He won his prior two starts and was also claimed many times. (3) Pianzi has been in fine form racing at Monmouth and Parx and was claimed for $30,000 two starts back. He has speed figures that are as good as any horse in this field. (2) Winning Drive has three second-place finishes in a row and was claimed back by Rob Atras.

6th race [NY, OC 45K/N2X, 1 1/8 mi] – (2) Truancy won her last two starts after running second in her debut in June. She has increased distance and speed figures in her only three starts with a first-level allowance win at BAQ last month. (7) Therisastormbrewin is back in for a tag for the first time since Rudy Rodriguez took him back in February. He did win at the nine furlong distance at Aqueduct. (3) Curlin’s Wisdom won his last two starts for Linda Rice with a maiden win on the turf and then an allowance that came off the grass. (4) Bossmakinbossmoves tried a Grade 3 last time and was a NY-bred stakes winner before that with two strong performances at the distance.

7th race [Clm 25000 N2L, 7F] – (5) Taco Bean is in excellent form in his last three starts at this level. (1) Hang Tight was claimed out of a second-place finish in similar spot at Saratoga last time with a rally from last. (2) Joey Loose Lips made a big improvement in his second start in a starter allowance which came after a claim. He gets blinkers on now. (6) Mister Candy Ride returns from a February layoff and has several past races that are good enough to win in here.

8th race [Floral Park, 6F TURF] – (2) Lady Edith has three starts since moving to the Clement barn and gets some class relief since racing against much better horses in a couple of Grade 3 stakes. (6) Kept Waiting returned from a short layoff in a third-level allowance at BAQ to win with a career best speed figure. (7) Spun Glass won her last two starts in restricted stakes at Laurel Park and Colonial Downs. (1) Igloo has been off since June and has used her early speed to run well in all seven starts. Breaking from the rail she is likely to head to lead once again.

Best bets: Truancy (6th); Lady Edith (8th). Best value: In Sky We Trust (3rd); Taco Bean (7th).

      No.

        Keeneland Hotlist - October 16

        October 15, 2022

Today’s Keeneland Hot List races to watch
        Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
        Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
        * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (5) Goodbetterbest missed by a head last time at this level and should emerge victorious today. (4) Lucky Phoenix was third behind the top pick and should be the main rival. (3) Unescorted is worth a look in her debut. (2) Key to Success may perk up in a claimer. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-5.
3rd race – (3) Maasai Warrior (D) was bet down from 3-2 to 6-5 but was no match for MSW rivals. Should prevail against claimers. (6) Mint may welcome a two-turn distance. (7) Ra’s Al Ghul fits better in this spot. (2) Grand Jury was third and second at Indianapolis and will be a contender in this field. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-7. Doubles: 2-3-6-7 with 2-3-5.
4th race – (5) Unlimitedpotential turned in a big effort in his debut and should graduate from the maiden ranks. (3) Lupo’s Legacy was a game second last time and promises to be the one to fear. (2) Speed Bias is worth a look in his first start since moving to Cox’s barn. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5.
6th race – (7) Ghostly Girl (B) rallied in the final furlong and missed by a neck in her debut. Seems poised to win here. (4) Julia Shining seems ready for a strong effort in her debut. (9) Theroanrunner is another interesting firster. (1) Penny Arcade figures to be a contender from the rail. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-7-9.
8th race – (1) Hidden Scroll has seen better days but can handle this field. (5) Briefcase Bully should be a main threat in the final furlong. (7) Uber Kirk exits a sharp win and cannot be ignored. (2) Spankster seems to alternate good and bad efforts and he’s due for a good one here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-7.

COMMENTS: ALIGATO never missed the board in his five races and is one for one at the distance. HAIL FREEDOM is not all that far from winning eight of his last 10 races. HOT BOX is a live longshot that has won four of six on grass. JETOVATOR usually runs well off the bench like today.

They held the Colts to just 219 yards. And, after beating the Chargers handily in week 3, 38-19, the Jags lost to Philly, 21-29 and then last week lost at home to Houston, 6-13. I was high on this Colts team early in the season. But some questionable coaching decisions have held this team to just 2-2-1 so far this season. They did beat the Broncos last week, 12-9, though that isn't any feat so far this year. They have revenge on their mind here in week six, having been embarrassed by the Jags in week two. Matt Ryan is probable this week for the Colts with a wrist injury and Jonathon Taylor is questionable with a ankle injury. Despite those hurts, I like the Colts this week to use their very good defense to keep this score low and all they have to do is basically win the the game with the line at -2 or -1. Your free play is on the Colts.

Race 4: #8 Generous Friend, #1 Big Me, #5 Amazing Rocky, #3 Dashing Triumph
Race 5: #9 Baebae Tsoi, #5 Star Contact, #4 Sweet Diamond, #7 Stunning Impact
Race 6: #11 Hit The Shot, #6 Entrusted, #10 Looking Cool, #7 Intrepid Winner
Race 7: #12 Speed Fay Fay, #2 Universal Horizon, #1 Sweet Encounter, #7 Blissful Star
Race 8: #14 Turin Redsun, #3 California Spangle, #7 Panfield, #4 Tourbillon Diamond
                    Race 9: #6 Cobhfield, #3 Tuchel, #1 Captain Win, #8 A Pal
Race 10: #2 Packing Treadmill, #1 Super Fortune, #8 Good Buddy, #5 Bundle Of Charm

                    Race 1: Corum Excellent Handicap

#5 Inspiring City put together several strong efforts last season. Expect he can return in excellent order and this race shapes as his to lose. #1 Lean Hero caught the eye with a strong third at his final appearance last term. These two shape as the standout chances for David Hayes in the race. #2 Island Golden looks well and has claims as he readies for his debut. #6 Young Sparkle did well to finish third twice last season – at both career outings – and he should get his chance again this weekend.

                    Race 2: Piaget Excellent Handicap

Expect #9 Mister Monte to roll forward and take up the running for Dylan Mo and Michael Chang. The rise in trip looks a plus and he should be able to find a soft lead early on from the draw. #1 Murray’s Partners gets down to Class 5. He’s been consistent of late, enough so to warrant safe keeping. #2 Star Of Glory narrowly missed first-up. He’s well weighted under Angus Chung and should once again get every chance. #8 Loyal Ambition is improving each and every outing. Keep safe.

Race 3: Franck Muller Excellent Handicap

#1 Lucky With You is still emerging but he is not without his own fair share of class. He did well first-up to score down the straight and he should be even better going around a bend this weekend. He’s the clear top selection. #2 Ima Single Man gets a handy 10lb taken off his back. He’s a solid operator. #3 Fantastic Way finished third first-up. Expect he’s still got a number of rating points in hand. #6 Rock Ya Heart is better than his form suggests, especially as he boasts a win over California Spangle. Keep safe.

Race 4: Parmigiani Fleurier Excellent Handicap

#8 Generous Friend appears to be doing everything right ahead of his debut. He’s very, very well bred and he caught the eye in a recent trial down the straight, pinging from the gates impressively to cross the line under his own steam. #1 Big Me is chasing back-to-back wins. He did well first-up but will have to shoulder more weight this time. #5 Amazing Rocky should fly out and press for the lead with Zac Purton up. #3 Dashing Triumph has done a stack of work. He looks ready to roll first-up for trainer Peter Ho.

Race 5: Grand Seiko Excellent Handicap

#9 Baebae Tsoi won well first-up and he shapes as an excellent chance to do the exact same again. Expect he finds the front and takes plenty of catching under Matthew Poon, especially from the ideal draw. #5 Star Contact is chasing back-to-back wins. He’s racing well and any improvement out of that win holds him in good stead. #4 Sweet Diamond mixes his form but has claims. #7 Stunning Impact is consistent and shapes to give this race a shake.

Race 6: H. Moser & Cie. Excellent Handicap

#11 Hit The Shot appears to have acclimatised now. He did well first-up and looks capable of taking another step forward here. He arrived in Hong Kong as a high-class import and it wouldn’t surprise to see him return to near those levels soon. #6 Entrusted narrowly missed upon resumption at odds of 41/1. He’ll relish getting up in trip following that effort. #10 Looking Cool draws well and does appear to still have a number of rating points in hand. #7 Intrepid Winner has a powerful finish on his day. Next best.

                    Race 7: Girard-Perregaux Excellent Handicap

#12 Speed Fay Fay makes the stable switch. He’s always performed consistently and he’s dangerous stepping away off a mark of 49. Strong booking of Silvestre de Sousa commands respect. #2 Universal Horizon should improve with that first-up run under his belt. #1 Sweet Encounter is chasing back-to-back wins after his impressive debut success. Gate 14 makes life hard, however, expect he’s thereabouts this weekend. #7 Blissful Star is unlucky not to already be a winner. He gets his chance once more.

Race 8: G2 Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Handicap

This will be a challenge but #14 Turin Redsun appeals under what appears to be favourable conditions. He gets in light and he’s currently making very, very rapid progress. His run two starts ago at Group 3 level was exceptional, he can step up here. #3 California Spangle is the likely favourite and he may just prove too strong. Expect he leads this one. He’s super talented. #7 Panfield has trialled well and looks wound up. #4 Tourbillon Diamond is nothing short of consistent. He’ll be thereabouts.

Race 9: IWC Shaffhausen Excellent Handicap

#6 Cobhfield returns first-up this season following surgery for colic. He moved well in his latest trial and does appear ready for a return to racing. Take a chance on him doing enough to win upon resumption. #3 Tuchel is tracking towards the Four-Year-Old Classic Series. He draws well and gets his chance once more over a suitable trip. #1 Captain Win is reliable. He rarely runs poorly and gets his opportunity. #8 A Pal caught the eye at the tail of the field last start. He can improve again.

Race 10: La Suisse Watch Excellent Handicap

#2 Packing Treadmill is a serious talent in his spot with three wins from five starts in Hong Kong. Zac Purton’s done a stack of trackwork with this guy ahead of his return. He’s trialled well and looks wound up to take this out. #1 Super Fortune has the class on his day. Keep him safe. #8 Good Buddy is chasing back-to-back wins. Expect he’s holding his condition. #5 Bundle Of Charm is talent on the rise and his first-up effort deserves forgiveness. He can bounce back.

Horses in Focus at Aqueduct for Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022
                      By: David Aragona

                      RACE 4: MONTATHAM (#8)

There appears to be plenty of pace in this allowance affair, which could work against potential favorite King Angelo (#6). This horse beat a decent field at Saratoga in July and did so in fast time. However, he benefited from a clear early lead and it seems unlikely he can work out the same trip this time given the presence of speeds like Ikigai (#2) and Fluid Situation (#7). The other runner who figures to take money is Gianni Lambo (#9), and I do think he’s dangerous. He has the right running style for this race, as he showed the ability to close from off the pace in his return from the layoff last time. The winner of that race is quite talented, but Gianni Lambo was never a serious threat while just picking up pieces late. He’s a major player, but I don’t think he’ll be much price with Irad Ortiz retaining the mount. If I’m going to take a closer, I’d rather go for a longshot like Montatham (#8). He might look overmatched at this level at first glance, since he hasn’t officially won a starter allowance yet. However, his speed figures stack up pretty well against this field, and I’m skeptical that the shorter prices will be able to produce their best form in this spot. While he was legitimately taken down two back, he ran quite well to cross the wire first that day, and I thought he put in a similarly strong performance last time as the only horse to close in a race dominated up front. Joseph Lee’s runners rarely take much money, but this horse has run well for him and should get the right setup here.

                      RACE 5: GENERAL BANKER (#4)

The first inclination for many in this maiden special weight will be to lean toward lightly raced runners, and there are certainly a few of those to consider. Liar’s Poker (#6) has the pedigree to be successful in a spot like this, since she’s out of 6-time turf winner Epping Forest, who was primarily a sprinter. However, this colt is by Empire Maker, so he appears to be spotted appropriately. Christophe Clement does fairly well with first-time starters, but this feels like one who could take money. The two first-time turfers with the best pedigrees are Sounds Spooky (#5) and Stow On the Wold (#10). The former goes out for strong connections, and should handle turf as a son of Mendelssohn out of a dam who has produced turf winners Fast N Fearious and Gambler’s Fallacy. He didn’t run that well on debut, but could benefit from that start. Stow on the Wold figures to be a much bigger price and you have to search a bit deeper for his turf breeding, as his dam hails from a strong family, being a half-sister to G1-winning European turf horse Campanaologist. I’m instead siding with experience. General Banker (#4) ran fine in his first couple of turf starts sprinting, but I thought he took a step forward when stretched out on turf two back. He was off a step slowly that day and then was always in an awkward position under Jose Gomez. He appeared to have plenty of run at the quarter pole, but had trouble working his way into the clear and ultimately finished with something left while running on through traffic. I like the addition of blinkers, and would hope that he’s more forwardly placed this time.

                      RACE 8: SPUN GLASS (#7)

Lady Edith (#2) is clearly the horse to beat as she looks to inherit the favorite’s role after being bigger prices in all of her prior starts for Christophe Clement. She’s certainly earned some respect from bettors, as she’s run well against tougher company in all of her prior starts on this circuit. She was closing well into a moderate pace in the Caress two back and last time was always wide while attempting to make up ground. She may just be finding the right field here and it doesn’t hurt to get a rider switch to Joel Rosario in races like this. I do much prefer her to the other mare who could take money, Kept Waiting (#6). I thought she beat a weaker field at the optional claiming level last time and would have to step up to defeat this group. If I’m going to try to beat the favorite, I would rather look for a new face. Spun Glass (#7) has been in great form out of town, winning 3 of her last 4 starts. Those two recent stakes wins did come against weaker company, but she finished up powerfully on both occasions. She may have to overcome a lack of pace in this spot, but she’s been more forwardly placed when necessary in the past. I like the 6-furlong distance for her, and Mike Trombetta tends to bring live horses for races like this. He’s 10 for 62 (16%, $3.43 ROI) in stakes at NYRA over the past 5 years.

                          LISMORE: RACE 4 @ 3:35PM:

DEELOSH (8) has shown promising signs in her four career runs but has yet to put it all together. Has enough early dash to offset the wide draw and will be sharpened by the Blinkers getting applied first time. Mallyon and Lees both running hot. Expect her to be very hard to beat. TENACIOUS LAD (6) pulled up with cardiac arrhythmia in his only run last prep before heading to the paddock. Has been readied for this with a sound trial placing. Booking of M McGuren a positive. GOLD PREMIUM (9) failed to fire a shot fresh at the Gold Coast. Usually improves with each run in and her best form can see her be competitive. TYCOON'S DELIGHT (13) returns. Fitter for a recent Eagle Farm trial placing. Will pay to watch for any market support.

                          SELECTIONS: Deelosh hard to knock.

                          HORSHAM: RACE 6 @ 4:15PM:

VITRUVIUS (4) creates plenty of interest resuming here having not missed a place in four first up attempts including a win. His form last preparation was excellent with close up efforts behind Lina's Legend, Sir Davy and Le Don De Vie prior to recording a win. That reads very well for this. HEAVENLY EAGLE (17) first up is lightly raced and progressive. He built his form nicely last preparation and with natural improvement he can figure in the finish here. He looks over the odds in early markets. INTELLECTIVE (6) races well first up and has plenty of ability on her day. Look for a forward showing with Yendall taking the ride. REALEZA (11) just missed in town last start and looks ready to win up to this trip. Back each way. WISH I MIGHT (15) has close up efforts to her name at her past two behind Savonia and Do You Reckon. Don't take lightly at big odds in early markets. JAY GATSBY (10) is racing well and should be thereabouts again from a forward position in the run.

SELECTIONS: Vitruvius has the form to go close fresh.

KALGOORLIE: RACE 5 @ 4:20PM: MACK MACK (4) was better at Northam and then came here and demolished the Maidens from the front. Peaks now and he will push forward again. Rates to take the next step. LATHAMS WISH (1) missed a whisker this grade building on the easy Maiden win. Has a handy barrier and small claim and should go close. RISKY LYRICS (5) draws out but has been racing well without winning. Has a 2kg claim today and can also make the finish. GALAHS DO ROAR (6) is also going well enough to consider.

                          SELECTIONS: Backing Mack Mack.

ALICE SPRINGS: RACE 5 @ 4:25PM: ROUGHLY (1) is backing up quickly after finishing in the money at this track over 1100m just eight days ago. Good effort last start and is worth following up. Looks hard to beat. FANTASY EAGLE (2) nice effort to score two runs ago over 1400m at this track. Couldn't follow that up last time out when fifth over 1400m at this track, clocking in 3.5 lengths from the winner. No reason he cannot return to winning ways. JUST HANG UP (4) was narrowly beaten at a huge quote last time out, finishing second over 1600m at this track. One of the main contenders. HARD WORK REWARDS (3) lines up on the back of a 2 length fifth over 1200m at this track. Has sound form here including a win and three minor placings from 10 starts. A bold showing is expected.

                          SELECTIONS: Roughly to win.

NOWRA: RACE 6 @ 4:40PM: ALLGEMEINE (7) is a promising Maurice mare building a nice record. Looks placed to advantage today after hitting the line late when second over 1200m at Canberra in BM70 grade on September 16. No excuses here and Penza will give her every chance. SHADDY (1) is racing well through his grades and breed love the heavy going. Raced on the pace when a tenacious winner over 1400m at Canberra last time out. Back in trip here and claim helps. Go close. I AM BRAZEN (5) resumed over 900m when a game second at Newcastle on September 17. Won second-up last time in and will have little trouble with the extra trip and heavy conditions. Value runner. HONEY SUCKLE CHOICE (10) has been mixing her form in similar grade and has a fair record on the heavy. Can sneak into the minor money.

                          SELECTIONS: Box Quinella 7,1,5.

SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 8 @ 5:10PM: ISLAND MAGIC (3) has been saved for this and is suited. Wasn't too far away at Doomben off the 4.5L Maiden win and Maloney goes on and is lethal with the Gollan barn. NEXT TO EXCEL (4) resumes and is also in good hands. Has been away an age but looked sharp winning the recent Doomben trial and Thompson's booking is a lead. Has figures that would see him very competitive. ROARING THUNDER (2) resumes for the new barn and has won fresh. Has trialled well and won't be far away. SNEAKY THREE (6) is speedy and gets weight relief. Can build on the solid first-up run.

SELECTIONS: Backing Island Magic to win.

                            RACE 1: CLAIMING $5,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 MILE

                            7-3-6-2

It’s Tesio day! There’s 10 races, including four stakes races, on today’s program. #7 Captain Cardo (8/5) has stepped up his game big-time in his last few starts, including a career-best brisnet figure of 78 earned in his last race. He rated off the pace and fought hard in the stretch for the win. #3 Dejohn (2/1) has consistently sharp figures as of late, and has hit the board in his last three races against similar without a win. A good candidate to round out the exacta, but a bit of a tough win proposition. #6 Loulovestheriver (5/1) broke his maiden three races back at Parx and should close strongly late.

                            RACE 2: MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT, 3-YEAR-OLDS, 5 1/2 FURLONGS

                            2-5-4-1

All eyes will be on the excellently named #2 Sugar Gray Leonard (3/5), a second-time starter for Brittany Russell. He broke slowly and rushed up to the lead in his first start at Aqueduct, before fading in the stretch. He held on to finish third in that race, and now comes home to find a very inexperienced field. As long as he runs anything like he did in his debut, he should have these at his mercy. #5 Run Away Empire (9/2) has been working sharply, with a few bullet drills in his lines. However, Hugh McMahon usually isn’t that great with first-time starters. Going to wait and see with this one. #4 King Seraf (8/1) also has some decent workouts and could make some waves on debut at a decent price.

                            White Clay Creek
Alma Rosa romps to White Clay Creek win
Alma Rosa, twice beaten by tigers, found the White Clay Creek Stakes for 2yo fillies at Delaware Park more to her liking en route to a three-length win.

RACE 3: STARTER OPTIONAL CLAIMING $25,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 5 1/2 FURLONGS (GRASS)

                            8-4-7-1

It looks as if this’ll be the first grass race of the year at Laurel Park. #8 Flank Speed (4/1) consistently ran in the 70s on the grass last year, and has a race this calendar year under his belt, albeit one on January 4. He’s been working well getting ready for his grass return and has lots of early speed. #4 Bardolino (8/1) has been plenty busy this year, with six races already under his belt. He’s won on grass before and will likely press the pace. #7 Smitten Enough (5/1) cleared his n/w2L condition last out with a pace-stalking win over this course. This’ll be his first outing since that October 3 race.

                            RACE 4: ALLOWANCE (N/W1X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, MD-BRED, 6 FURLONGS

                            7-3-1A-6

#7 Bear Force Won (2/1) has faced some tough open n/w1x fields in his last few races, and got up to win at that level last out. He surged late and beat Nashvegas, a hard-knocking sort who won three in a row last fall, by a nose. He’s run at least a 90 in each of his last three races. #3 Coastal Mission (3/1) has been getting better with every start, peaking at a 90 with a n/w1x win against fellow 3-year-olds last out. He’s been stakes-placed three times this year. #1A Royal Thunder (7/2) looks like the much stronger half of the Hugh McMahon entry, with very sharp early speed and consistent form as of late. He’s overcome wide posts to earn big figures in his last two starts and shouldn’t have much trouble with post seven here.

RACE 5: MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 MILE (GRASS)

                            11-4-10-3

#11 I’m Blushing (9/5) overcame a poor start and a lot of traffic to close for fourth in her grass debut at Fair Grounds last out. Should easily handle these with a cleaner journey. #4 Charmed Way (7/2) made her grass debut in the “flamingo race” at Gulfstream Park. While racing on the first turn, one of her rivals bore out in an attempt to avoid a goose and a flamingo on the track, and ended up carrying Charmed Way several paths out. She recovered nicely and finished third. There are no flamingos around here, so barring some other unforeseen bizarre incident, she should work out a much smoother trip. #10 Joyful Applause (5/1) has been working sharply for her debut and ships from Kentucky for Helen Pitts. This one looks bred for grass. Watching the board with her.

RACE 6: WEBER CITY MISS STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES, 1 1/16 MILES

                            5-2-3-4

The stakes action kicks off here, with a field of six 3-year-old fillies. This race is named after the Maryland-bred winner of the 1980 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. #5 Luna Belle (3/5) hopes to follow in her footsteps and clinch a spot in this year’s Black-Eyed Susan with a victory here. She’s won four stakes races in a row by open lengths, with figures comparable to some of the country’s top 3-year-old fillies. This will be her two-turn test; she’s never gone beyond a mile before. #2 Khuluq (9/2) broke her maiden in professional style last out at Aqueduct and ships down here for Chad Brown. She’s raced four times at a one-turn mile, but has also never gone two turns. Should rate another great trip. Feargal Lynch gets the mount for the first time. #3 Chardonnay (7/2) showed speed in each of her last three races at Fair Grounds, and went gate-to-wire to break her maiden two races back. She finished second to Malibu Marie last out, who extended her winning streak to four in a row with a victory at Keeneland last Friday.

                            Jameela
                            BackTracks: Jameela, Maryland’s first millionaire
In today’s BackTracks, Jameela tackled the best of her generation en route to becoming the first Maryland-bred millionaire.

RACE 7: FRANK Y. WHITELEY STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 7 FURLONGS

                            1-3-4-7

Eight sprinters will line up in this contest named after the Hall of Fame trainer. #1 Sir Alfred James (3/1) narrowly missed in the Fishtown Stakes at Parx behind Hollywood Jet two races back, just missing his lifetime-top mark with a 105. He surged to win a stakes-quality allowance last out over stakes-winning Rock On Luke. Should put in a strong rally late. John McKee comes in for the mount. #3 Borracho (4/1) is in similarly sharp form, with gate-to-wire wins against allowance company here in his last two starts. He has the best early pace figures in the race by a decent margin, so he should be able to take the early lead without too much trouble. #4 Youngest of Five (7/2) has finished in the superfecta in his last four races against stakes company and should battle on for a piece here.

RACE 8: HEAVENLY CAUSE STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 MILE

                            6-10-2-4

This race is named after the Maryland-bred 1980 champion 2-year-old filly. #6 Primacy (8/1) is another Chad Brown shipper. She’s won two in a row at Aqueduct, having overcome a wide trip to win a n/w2x race last out. It looks as if she’s rounding into her best form. I don’t know if you’ll get 8/1 because of the Brown factor, but she looks very interesting. #10 Fille d’Esprit (7/2) won the Conniver Stakes in explosive fashion last out. She loves Laurel Park and has a strong kick, but has never raced beyond seven furlongs. Then again, I doubt she would’ve lost last time if the race was an eighth of a mile longer. #2 Miss Leslie (4/1) won two stakes in a row here to wrap up her 2021 campaign and looks for a rebound off a disappointing third-place finish in the Nellie Morse Stakes last out.

                            RACE 9: FEDERICO TESIO STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS, 1 1/8 MILES

                            2-7-9-5

The local road to the Preakness Stakes wraps up here. Three horses in here are Triple Crown nominated, and as such would take advantage of a “win and you’re in” berth to the Preakness if they win this race. They’re my top three picks in this race. #2 Shake Em Loose (3/1) is a two-time stakes winner, having proven himself around two turns with a victory in the Private Terms Stakes last out from off the pace. He’s one of two in here to have run in the 90s in each of his last two starts. He shouldn’t have any problem with this distance and will make for a great story if he gets to the Preakness. #7 Smarten Up (9/2) is the other one in here with back-to-back figures in the 90s, having earned both of them at Parx. He made decent ground last out when closing into a very slow second quarter, and will look for a more honest setup here. #9 Secret Alliance (10/1) broke his maiden going six furlongs at Parx last out and now stretches out around two turns for the first time. He battled on the lead and pulled clear to win in an impressive performance. We’ll see if he can stretch out his speed.

RACE 10: CLAIMING $16,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 7 FURLONGS

                            4-7-3-9

#4 Startwithabang (2/1) got up to break her maiden at Charles Town last out, just missing her career-best mark with a 75. Anthony Farrior and Arnaldo Bocachica are always a dangerous trainer/jockey combo. #7 Kinky Frolic (5/1) has had some up-and-down form lately, but at her best, she has great closing speed and can rally for a piece. #3 Chica Rabiosa (5/2) crossed the wire first by open lengths last out, but was disqualified for bumping. She came from off the pace in that race, a change of pace from her usual front-running style. We’ll see which tactics are employed here.

Today’s Horse Racing Tips October 16th

There are 4 meetings in Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with NH racing finally coming to the fore and fixtures at Cork, Kempton and Sedgefield sure to provide some great variety of action (with the recent rain extremely welcome for easing the ground and increasing competitiveness). Naas stages the only flat card of the afternoon, with two listed contests providing some quality and the first race scheduled for 1.10pm.

                              Ridgeway

                              Kempton 2:15 (UK time)

Dan Skelton’s winning hurdler produced a cracking effort on his final run over timber, shaping better than the bare result in a hot novice handicap hurdle. That form looks very solid for the grade, and he looks just the type too make a cracking chaser for his in-form yard.

                              Kempton 3:25 (UK time)

Amy Weaver’s course specialist has optimum conditions to make all the running back at Kempton on Sunday, with race fitness on his side and the decent ground expected to suit. He has won four times at this venue in the past, and still seems well capable of reproducing his best even at the age of 11.

                              Odds: NA

Odds are best odds available as at 2am October 16th. Odds may now differ.
