    #46
    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Charles Town - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#6 Xanthe She has tables to turn off the modest debut run, but she offers a bit of appeal at what should be a pretty solid price. The barn rarely starts horses in this kind of race, and the only other horse they have run in similar spots in the last few years graduated at second asking after a flat debut run -- just like I hope this guy does.
#9 Sing a Lullabye She's an obvious player while likely to flash her pace again from the outside draw, but this barn is just 12% with a pretty noticeably negative ROI with these types over the last few years. The one to beat -- but I have to try.
#8 Patti Blue Eyes She's a tough call. She is an obvious player in this spot with three runner-up finishes from as many one-turn tries, but she hasn't been a particularly serious threat in any of them. She'd be no surprise, but she's probably not a fair price here even as the likely second choice.
Race Summary Xanthe meets a couple logical players who have some questions from where I sit, and this filly goes second out after showing little in the debut run, just like the barn's only other 2-year-old special weight sprinter here in the last few years.

    Charles Town - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#2 Manhattan Weave I worry that he gets bet a bit too hard here, but I think he's the right one in a race where nearly all of them have trouble finishing off even this short trip. This guy's ability to pass horses late should serve him well tonight.
#3 In High Gear It took him 11 tries to graduate, but he has been really sharp in some of those recent efforts, and he doesn't appear overmatched while rising to face winners.
#6 Talking Teddy He occasionally finishes from off the splits, so maybe he gets a bit outrun in the early stages and finds a way to get past some of these for a piece of this. Wouldn't be surprised to see him bring something better after the form went sour and he went to the bench earlier this year.
Race Summary Manhattan Weave has a right to be tough while tracking the pace from close range, and his ability to grind on at one pace might make him the right one if the rest are failing to finish out the trip again.

    Charles Town - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#10 Subject to Change He won his only start here and gets a good draw to show some pace in a spot where he might be classy enough to discourage the rest of the pace chasers early on. Think he's tough in the finale.
#8 Air on Fire He was beaten about 17 lengths by the top choice in that two-back start, but he showed up here after that race and promptly posted a sharp five-length score. Not impossible, but he has some work to do.
#1 Rock File Not sure his ceiling is high enough to win this right now, but I do think his ability to finish a bit might allow him to offer some price appeal in the gimmicks.
Race Summary We already know Subject to Change handles the local footing, and he was certainly flattered when Air on Fire showed up here and rolled a similar group. Guessing he's bet -- but also that he wins this one.

      #47
      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Golden Gate - Race #1
      Picks Notes
#2 HOLY JAZZ (3-1) Can make good use of his speed on cutback in distance for new barn.
#1 REALLY EASY (8-5) Finished in the money in all five starts but was favored in four of them.
#5 HABANERO KID (5-1) Tired off 10-month layoff, worked bullet since then, gets class relief.
Race Summary HOLY JAZZ disputed the pace and held on for minor awards in his first two starts at 6F, then he prompted the even-money winner in the 3-path before fading in a long sprint. The 5-1/2F distance should suit him well on the barn switch. Play 2-1 and 2-5 exactas.

      Golden Gate - Race #3
      Picks Notes
#2 AWKWARD MORNING (2-1) Awaited room, got up for second for 30-percent sprint-to-route barn.
#1 WHISPER AND WINK (9-2) Improved when stretched out to this distance, landed share in three straight.
#4 KING ROB (7-2) Blew leads in five of his last 10 starts out of town, worked in 1:00.4 over strip.
Race Summary AWKWARD MORNING ran into a traffic jam midway on the final turn, then regrouped to finish a willing second between rivals as the favorite. He galloped out well and should go better at one mile than he did to start his career early this year. Bet to win and place.

      Golden Gate - Race #7
      Picks Notes
#2 DESCARTES (8-1) Inhaled leaders in turf sprint, could return quick claim dividend.
#4 RESPECT THE HUSTLE (9-2) Plays to a steady beat, no matter the surface, as he nears $300k.
#8 VIA EGNATIA (9-5) Carried his speed to a win at Del Mar and a second at Santa Anita.
Race Summary DESCARTES was far back early as a fast pace developed, but he unwound with a powerful rush to sweep by the trip-sitting favorite and win going away at 5-1/2F. He steps up in class and stretches out off the claim but is well worth the 8-1 morning-line price. Play a 2-ALL exacta.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            The Walker Group Picks

            # 1 AIDEN LITTLE KING 2/1

            # 3 SOUTHERN EMPIRE 3/1

            # 8 SILVER PATH 8/1

My selection in this event is AIDEN LITTLE KING. His 75 average has this colt with among the strongest Equibase Speed Figures here. Ought to compete admirably in the early pace contest which bodes well with this group. Ought to be considered here if only for the decent Equibase speed fig garnered in the last competition. SOUTHERN EMPIRE - Is hard not to consider based on speed figures which have been respectable - 72 avg - of late. With a formidable 87 speed rating last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this contest.

              Penn National - Race #4 - Post: 7:22pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,100 Class Rating: 86

              Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

              #6 CHEWY CHEWY GOOD (ML=4/1)
              #2 MIZ CHAPLIN (ML=3/1)
              #1 SINISE (ML=5/1)

CHEWY CHEWY GOOD - Jockey hops up atop after getting to know the beautiful animal by riding last time out. That's always a great angle. Taking a trip down the class scale; has the power to make her presence felt. Have to give this mare a shot. Ran a solid outing last out within the last month. MIZ CHAPLIN - This mare's last race was back on July 8th but I do believe she can run a good one coming off a layoff. This mare notched a good speed rating of 86 in her last event. That speed fig should be lofty enough to prove victorious this time around. SINISE - I like to see consistency in a racehorse. Look at this filly's PPs. Almost always in the money. Leahey's agent must like anytime Johnston gives them a mount; win percent together is terrific. The morning line odds on this filly are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of handler Johnston. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. I like to bet on this angle, a pony coming back off a sharp race within the last month.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SEEKING THE DREAM (ML=5/2), #5 POLISHED GEM (ML=4/1), #4 CONFIRMED GENIUS (ML=6/1),

SEEKING THE DREAM - She showed not much at all in the last clash. You think this animal is going to be first just because she's always close. Just doesn't finish on top frequently. This pony ran a disappointing rating last time out. She shouldn't improve and will probably get beat in today's event running that figure. POLISHED GEM - Disappointing speed fig in the last race at Charles Town at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this mount will improve too much in today's event. CONFIRMED GENIUS - I'd like to see more preferred recent showings with morning line odds of 6/1.

              STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #6 CHEWY CHEWY GOOD on top if we're getting at least 7/2 odds

                Laurel - Race #9 - Post: 4:47pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 90

                Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

                #10 STANDUP (ML=5/1)
                #6 STRIKE SILVER (ML=10/1)
                #1 PASSWORD PROTECTED (ML=4/1)

STANDUP - Several positive 'sensations' associated with this thoroughbred and his barn. STRIKE SILVER - The thoroughbred with the top average class figure in turf events is usually a solid play. This horse fits the bill. This mount could be tough this time around, especially since Monterrey rode last out and now should be more familiar with this one. You should overlook that last affair at Laurel on the soft turf where he finished outside the top 3. Should do well in this race on a fast track. PASSWORD PROTECTED - This animal didn't run well on a sloppy track in his last start at Pimlico. You probably should disregard that performance.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #12 JOE PHILLIPS (ML=3/1), #11 FILIGREE (ML=7/2), #8 BOSS IS A PAL (ML=7/2),

JOE PHILLIPS - The shortage of zip in the last one, a route affair, is a bit disconcerting. Should be difficult for this racer to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class rating, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list. FILIGREE - When checking today's class rating, he will have to earn a much better speed rating than in the last race to compete in this turf sprint. BOSS IS A PAL - Can't really be sure that the most recent speed figure of 89 is true since it was earned on the soft turf. Pace is so influential, and this speed merchant is going to have a speed duel on his hands.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - STRIKE SILVER - This horse is utmost in the field in earnings per start. I'm making a wager on this one.

                  The Walker Group Picks

                  # 5 ARROGANT LADY 7/5

                  # 4 STORMARELLA 12/1

                  # 2 SHE'S AWESOME 7/2

ARROGANT LADY is the most respectable wager in this race. Could provide positive dividends based on respectable recent speed figs with an average of 73. I think having Rodriguez ride this filly is a smart move. Clement has her trained solidly to break promptly out of the starting gate. STORMARELLA - Has to be given a chance as she drops to compete against this less demanding field. SHE'S AWESOME - Looks decent to be on or close to the lead at the first call. Should be given consideration - I like the figs from the last affair.
