Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks
Charles Town - Race #6
Picks Notes
#6 Xanthe She has tables to turn off the modest debut run, but she offers a bit of appeal at what should be a pretty solid price. The barn rarely starts horses in this kind of race, and the only other horse they have run in similar spots in the last few years graduated at second asking after a flat debut run -- just like I hope this guy does.
#9 Sing a Lullabye She's an obvious player while likely to flash her pace again from the outside draw, but this barn is just 12% with a pretty noticeably negative ROI with these types over the last few years. The one to beat -- but I have to try.
#8 Patti Blue Eyes She's a tough call. She is an obvious player in this spot with three runner-up finishes from as many one-turn tries, but she hasn't been a particularly serious threat in any of them. She'd be no surprise, but she's probably not a fair price here even as the likely second choice.
Race Summary Xanthe meets a couple logical players who have some questions from where I sit, and this filly goes second out after showing little in the debut run, just like the barn's only other 2-year-old special weight sprinter here in the last few years.
Charles Town - Race #7
Picks Notes
#2 Manhattan Weave I worry that he gets bet a bit too hard here, but I think he's the right one in a race where nearly all of them have trouble finishing off even this short trip. This guy's ability to pass horses late should serve him well tonight.
#3 In High Gear It took him 11 tries to graduate, but he has been really sharp in some of those recent efforts, and he doesn't appear overmatched while rising to face winners.
#6 Talking Teddy He occasionally finishes from off the splits, so maybe he gets a bit outrun in the early stages and finds a way to get past some of these for a piece of this. Wouldn't be surprised to see him bring something better after the form went sour and he went to the bench earlier this year.
Race Summary Manhattan Weave has a right to be tough while tracking the pace from close range, and his ability to grind on at one pace might make him the right one if the rest are failing to finish out the trip again.
Charles Town - Race #8
Picks Notes
#10 Subject to Change He won his only start here and gets a good draw to show some pace in a spot where he might be classy enough to discourage the rest of the pace chasers early on. Think he's tough in the finale.
#8 Air on Fire He was beaten about 17 lengths by the top choice in that two-back start, but he showed up here after that race and promptly posted a sharp five-length score. Not impossible, but he has some work to do.
#1 Rock File Not sure his ceiling is high enough to win this right now, but I do think his ability to finish a bit might allow him to offer some price appeal in the gimmicks.
Race Summary We already know Subject to Change handles the local footing, and he was certainly flattered when Air on Fire showed up here and rolled a similar group. Guessing he's bet -- but also that he wins this one.
