Belmont at the Big A Hotlist - October 28

    October 27, 2022

Today’s New York Hot List races to watch – Friday, October 28, 2022
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

    Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
    * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race [Md 40000, 1 mi] – (2) Winning Connection (B) got bumped hard at the break and then was taken up. From last he raced very wide and got up for third. (5) Going in Style moved forward in his second start which was at BAQ as he finished third after pressing the pace behind a runaway winner. (3) Outlaw Country will drop into a maiden claimer in his second start for George Weaver. (8) Uncle Dan was in a very strong maiden special weight last time where the top two finishers came back to win their next starts.

2nd race [Clm 14000 N3L, 1 mi] – (1A) Mr. Briggs (B) set the pace and finished third in his first race since a five-month layoff. (6) Lord Gatling was a winner in his first start for Linda Rice after getting claimed in July at Saratoga. (3) El Mayor will move back to the main track which looks to be his best surface and makes a big drop down in claiming price. (5) Forestwood Lane won his two races in the spring at Aqueduct and he was second at today’s level last time at BAQ.

4th race [OC 62k/N2X, 1 mi TURF] – (5) Mirth ‘n Merriment (C) was last seen in August at Saratoga as a front-end winner when she was bet down from 15-1 to 11-1 in a $50,000 claimer. She earned the best speed figure of her career in that win. (2) Oakhurst drops out of three stakes races and will make her first start for trainer Michelle Nevin who is having an excellent meeting at BAQ. (7) Bramble Bay is the recent winner of two NJ-bred turf stakes races at Monmouth Park, one sprinting and one going a mile. She is projected to be the pace setter in this field. (3) Silvestri won her first start in North America in an allowance at Woodbine for Christophe Clement. In France, she ran second in a Group 3 race at Longchamp.

8th race [Chelsey Flower, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (1) Tax Implications was an impressive maiden winner for Chad Brown at Monmouth as the favorite defeating a filly that came back to break her maiden at BAQ. (2) Implicated got her first win last month at BAQ for Chad in her second start which was her first on the grass. (6) Smokie Eyes needed three tries to her first win but was second in her other races for the Clement barn. (5) Grand Oak will stretch out for Graham Motion who sent her to Royal Ascot after a maiden win at Churchill Downs. Since then she was fourth three times in stakes races.

Best bets: Mr. Briggs (2nd); Tax Implications (8th). Best value: Winning Connection (1st); Mirth ‘n Merriment (4th).

        Friday, Oct. 28, 2022

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman

        Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
        * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (3) Chasing Rainbows was a good second at Indianapolis and should be able to handle this field. (5) Flint Ridge takes enough of a class drop to be a factor here. (6) Mahaamel flopped last time but can rebound here. (2) Lucky Boss should respond to a switch to dirt. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-6.

3rd race – (2) One Giant Leap is an interesting firster from Ward who should be tough to handle. (6) Coal Boss might be more competitive in a claimer. (3) Golden Bandit figures to be more of a threat in a claimer. (9) Hill of Tara ships in from California and is worth a look. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-9. Doubles: 2-3-6-9 with 1-2-5-9.

4th race – (1) Cees Get Degrees is a California import who should take a step forward on turf. (5) Runaway Harry looks like the one to catch in this spot. (9) Burninhunkoflove might wake up in a claimer. (2) Mr. Thunderstruck enters off a win at Prairie Meadows and deserves some attention. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-9.

6th race – (2) Scarlet Stripe (A) was an improved second last time and should prevail here. (4) Sunny River was second in her last three starts and will be the main rival. (3) Parents Pride gets Irad and merits consideration. (6) Seize the Marquet could be a contender in her debut. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-6. Doubles: 2-3-4-6 with 3-4-6-7.

7th race – (6) Key of Life (C) dropped from 6-5 to 4-5 and won easily. Can make it three straight wins against this field. (3) Baby Got Backspin has been second in all three starts and belongs in the exotics. (4) Two Minute Drill should be a main threat here. (7) Take Charge Briana will appreciate the turnback to a sprint. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-6-7.

Keeneland $3 Min Turf Pick Three Analysis – October 28th, 2022 – By Michael Domabyl
              by Michael Domabyl

Only two more opportunities to take down the Turf Pick 3 at this Keeneland Fall Meet. The first of which comes on a Friday card that features graded stakes action in the form of the G3-Valley View Stakes which goes as the middle leg of this sequence.

              Selections

              Leg 1 (R5): 5-13-12-4-9
              Leg 2 (R8): 6-1-5-8
              Leg 3 (R10): 5-12-9-7

              Leg 1 (3:08pm): Keeneland Race 5 – Allowance N1X 110k Purse

The all-turf pick 3 kicks off with a rare allowance race for two-year-olds as often times maiden winners head straight to stakes races in their juvenile season. I’ve always felt watching the replays for juvenile debut efforts is much more important that looking at the running lines and there was one replay I watched for this race that jumped out at me. Heavenly Sunday (#5) debuted at Horseshoe Indy late last month and put on a show. She was able to rate just outside the leader early and then put forth a lethal turn of foot in the lane. That ability to shut off early will suit her well as there’s more speed in this race than her debut. While I’m normally hesitant to lean heavily in races like this, I think this filly has a bright future and now is the time to cash in. That opinion is bolstered by the fact I think her main rival is mired on the also eligible list. Freydis the Red (#13) has undoubtedly faced the toughest fields of anyone in this race. In her debut she caught Be Your Best and second time out ran into Free Look with both those fillies targeting the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In her last turf start, she had a tough time finding a seam in the lane and it allowed Free Look to blow by her on the outside. There are about five other capable fillies that could win this if my top pick stubs her toe and the other filly I mentioned fails to draw in, but I’ll relegate all of those to a distant backup ticket.
              Leg 2 (4:44pm): Keeneland Race 8 – G3-Valley View Stakes 300k Purse

The middle leg of the sequence is a graded stakes event for older fillies and mares routing on the grass. Dolce Zel (GB) (#5) is certainly going to be a tough customer from the potent Chad Brown operation. She’s already notched two victories at this Grade 3 level this year and is coming into this race off a respectable effort behind two talented fillies. The trip didn’t work out for her last time in the G2-Lake Placid as her stablemate Haughty was able to wire on the front end. There looks to be more pace in this full field and while she’s surely going to be running on late, I think there are two potential upsetters in this field. The first of which is California Angel (#1) who is cozily drawn on the inside and returns in under two weeks from a try at the G1 level. The fillies that defeated her in the G1-QEII are arguably all of higher quality that what she faces today and she’ll likely have more of a pace in front of her. My top pick though is Majestic Glory (GB) (#6) coming out of the red hot barn of Todd Pletcher. This filly displayed plenty of ability in her overseas efforts when knocking heads with the Grade 1 winner Wild Beauty for much of last year. She ran well when third to that filly in a Group 3 at Newmarket that kicked off her three-year-old campaign and her stateside debut was nothing to scoff at. That day she broke slowly and was rank heading into the turn which was made worse by the fact this race was eventually wired on the front end with a slower than average pace. The form of that Pebbles Stakes has held up well as second place finisher Gina Romantica took down the G1-QEII a couple weeks ago. I’m enticed by the rider switch from Dylan Davis to Luis Saez and hope he can get this filly’s early position in front of her shorter priced rivals.
              Leg 3 (5:48pm): Keeneland Race 10 – Allowance N4X 140k Purse

It’s a full field of turf sprinters to close out this sequence and a salty one at that. I don’t envy the job Nick Tammaro has to do to make this morning line, but my top pick in the race might be listed a bit higher than what he’ll ultimately go off at. Outadore (#5) began his career with three stellar turf efforts, then didn’t get back to that surface until last time at Kentucky Downs. Despite finishing third, he ran a career best speed figure today and I like him even more turning back to the 5.5f distance at which he won his debut. This could certainly be a prep, but I’m intrigued to see Breaking the Rules (#12) show up in the entry box here. He has never raced shorter than a mile on turf, but I’ve always thought those shorter routes suited his late kick better. You have to question whether he can be effective going this short or if he’ll improve at those elongated sprints they run at Belmont and Aqueduct, but he’ll be too big of a price with his back class to ignore today. After those two opinions, you could throw a blanket over the rest of the field, so I’ll include as many as I can afford on a backup line linked to my other two opinions.

Gene McLean’s Selections for Keeneland on Friday, Oct. 28

Here’s our looks for this Friday card, which features 2 Stakes and a bunch of other good action:

1st: 3-6-2/4/5/1-7//8-9…Chasing Rainbows (3) gets in the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at the scenic racing oval in Lex-town on this kickoff to the glorious weekend. This 3YO son of Into Mischief is a gray or roan colt. Don’t see many of those by this sire. But this one can run like many of the others. Drops into the mid-range claiming level here for the first time ever. This barn wins with .28% of those kind and will cut back from the route to a sprint distance, as well. Trainer hits with .23% of the last 123 to make the distance cut. Has never run a bad race and will surely be claimed here. Worth the $. Mahaamel (6) gets the huge drop from trainer Todd Pletcher, as well. This one ran real well a year ago, when striking a record of 1-2-3 in 6 starts. But lone start this year came on Oct. 14 — nearly a year layoff. Ran just OK and now drops. Another son of Into Mischief and another who is likely to get haltered here. Rider has teamed up with this barn operation to go 4-1-3 in the last 12. Watch out. I bet the 3 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 4-5 in two smaller units.

2nd: 1-4/5-10/6-8/7-9/3-2…Willacy (1) drops to half the asking price here after running an OK 5th last time out over the sod in Virginia. Barn wins with .26% of the last 145 to get this much of a price adjustment in the claiming ranks at one time and the rider switch may help the cause. Look out for this one here. Golden Luna (4) was plucked from the claiming ranks las time out and the new barn wins with .19% on the first try after the purchase. May improve with the addition of blinkers here for the first time. Work on Oct. 21 was encouraging. I bet the 1 across the board and then box the 1-4 in the exactas. I will key the 1-4 over/under the 5-10-6-8 in two smaller units.

3rd: 3-2/5-8/4-9/6-7/1…Golden Bandit (3) drops to the very highest ranks of the claimers here after a solid effort in the first try here on Oct. 7. Tired at the end of that one. But this barn wins with .28% on 2nd tries and if she avoids the stumble at the start this time? Look out. One Giant Leap (2) will make the career debut here for a barn that is winning at a .27% rate this meet and .25% after 323 starts this year. Gets a top rider up and the dam of this one has produced 3 winners from 3 starters and has a Stakes winner on the ground. Nice. I bet the 3-2 across the board and then box these two sternly in the exactas. I will key the 3-2 over (only) the 5-8-4-9 in a smaller unit.

4th: 9-3/1/5/2-6-7/4-8…Burninhunkoflove (9) will drop into the claiming ranks here and this barn operator wins with .20% of the last 35 to do that for the first time. Will be making the 2nd start off a layoff and that should help with fitness. Ran up against Gunite in a Stakes just two starts ago. Wow. Class relief by the tons here. Mean Jakey (3) could provide some solid odds value here, as Brisnet.com has posted this 3YO son of Violence at 8-1 in its’ ML. Won just two starts ago against much better. Gets a solid rider up. Work on Oct. 22 was spot on. Chance. I bet the 9 across the board and then box the 9-3 in the exactas. I will key the 9-3 over/under the 1-5 in two smaller units.

5th: 1-4/3-(13)-9-2-11/8-5-12/6-10/7…This is a 1-mile turf event and I will go to the rail and saddle up with Buttons (1). This 2YO daughter of Twirling Candy ran a huge one last time out at KY Downs. Just tired up the hill and in a stretch that seemingly never ends. Won the debut before that. Gets a huge rider switch here and the trainer wins with .21% when returning to the gate with a beaten favorite. Blinkers could help today. C C Cruise Control (4) has run in 3 straight Stakes events and has been OK. Has gotten Stakes-placed and that’s not a bad thing at 2YOs. Has some stalking speed and could push the pace here. Chance. I bet the 1 across the board and then double down on the win bet. I will box the 1-4 in the exactas. I will key the 1 over/under the 4-3-13-9-2-11-8 in two smaller units.

6th: 4-2/8/3/5-6/1-7…Sunny River (4). Oh, oh, oh. Has run 5 times already. I think I have touted 5 times. And, this one has 5 runner-ups. Has faced some good ones. Has run some good ones. But this one returns as a beaten favorite in the last 4. Should pop the cork here. I’m hoping. Scarlet Stripe (2) ran a very good 2nd to a filly who came right back to win the next time out, too. This one is a daughter of Gun Runner and that has to boost the chances, right? Gets a top rider back up. Big time shot. I bet the 4 across the board and double down o the win bet. I will box the 4-2 in the exactas. And, I will key the 4-2 over (only) the 8-3-5-6 in a smaller unit.

7th: 6-11/1-3/2-4-7/5-10/8-9…Myrtlewood Stakes…Key of Life (6) gets the slight nod in this Stakes tilt. The 2YO daughter of Mo Town comes in off back-to-back easy wins and goes for a barn that wins with .28% of those that captured the last race out. Has high-end cruising speed and should either be on or very near the lead. That style has played very well here this meet. Somebody’s Problem (11) has a win over our top pick in her resume. That came in the career debuts for both. And, this daughter of Runhappy put the top number away. But? Our top pick had a very slow start that day and nearly lost all chance with racing just 5 furlongs. I bet the 6 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 6-11 in the exactas. I will also key the 6-11 over (only) the 1-3-2-4-7 in a smaller unit.

8th: 5-9-1/7/2-3-6-8-11/4-12/(14)-10…G3 Valley View Stakes…This Stakes event will be contested at 11/16-miles over a crusty brownish turf course and a rather firm base. I give the edge to Dolce Del (5). This 3YO French-bred filly has never missed the board in 7 lifetime starts and comes in off two very nice races in a row at Saratoga. Won the G3 Lake George Stakes there just two starts ago. Classy type. Sparkle Blue (9) nearly won the Virginia Oaks last time out and has been a different filly since being equipped with blinkers just two starts ago. Take note. California Angel (1) just ran a very competitive 4th to Gina Romantica in the G1 QE II Challenge Cup on Oct. 15. Won the G2 Jessamine Stakes over this sod in 2021. Will be doing her best running late. Can she get through? I bet the 5 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will also key the 5 over/under the 9-1-7-2-3-6-8-11 in two smaller units.

9th: 3-5/6-8/1-7/2-4-9…Powder River (3) returns as a beaten favorite here and the barn wins with .18% of those kind. Has really nice, high-end cruising speed and should be in a very comfortable stalking spot from the get-go. Could be tough to handle from there. Love the work on Oct. 21. Sitting on a good one, IMO. Emmeline (5) is our first “Upset Special of the Day.” This 4YO daughter of Violence didn’t fire last time out in the G3 Stakes, but the race before was a win over the AW track. This barn wins with .28% when converting from the AW to the main dirt. Interesting. Also, this one may like the extra distance here, too. I bet the 3-5 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 3-5 over/under the 6-8-1-7 in two smaller units.

10th: 10-5/(14)-1-12-2/3-7-9-8/4-6-11…The finale is a 5.5-furlong sprint over the sod and I will go with one of my favorites and veteran runners — Totally Boss (10). This 7YO gelding will be making his 4th start this year and should be sitting on a big one. Love this sod, having gone 1-1-1 here in 3 previous runs. Has run only twice in non-Stakes races in the last 10 outings. Won one of those. Looks ready and poised. Like the work here on Oct. 22. I bet the 10 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I box the 10-5 in the exactas. I will key the 10 over/under the 5-14-1-12-2-3 in two smaller units.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene

Neil Morrice Best Bets And Tips – Friday 28 October 2022

Neil Morrice shares all of his best bets and tips for Friday’s racing coming your way from Newmarket, Wetherby and Southwell on 28 October 2022.

                  NEWMARKET
                  Race 1 No3 TIRIAC
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: David Egan

Ehraz is an older horse taking on juveniles and not far short of Group class. He will start at prohibitive odds, but a chance is taken that TIRIAC could stage a bit of a shock. The Sixties Icon colt was too green to do himself justice when down the field on his debut at Newbury but could improve substantially with the benefit of that outing under his belt, and he’s getting 19lbs from the favourite.
Race 2 No5 GLORIOUS LION (Each Way)
Trainer: James Ferguson – Jockey: Cieren Fallon

Only four of the fourteen runners have public form which leaves room for one of the newcomers to prevail. One that arrives with good messages from the gallops is GLORIOUS LION. A son of Roaring Lion out of a Galileo mare who certainly has the credentials on pedigree alone.
Race 5 No1 DUAL IDENTITY (Nap)
Trainer: William Knight – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni

DUAL IDENTITY carries a welter burden in this middle-distance handicap, but the Belardo gelding keeps earning in smart company, and after dodging an opportunity last week is strongly fancied to take away another cheque. His third to Majestic in the Cambridgeshire is very solid form, and if repeated should see him safe home.
Race 8 No12 GIVE IT SOME TEDDY (Each Way)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Duran Fentiman

It’s been a fruitless season for GIVE IT SOME TEDDY, but the eight-year-old can change that with what could be his last roll of the dice. The selection has eased in the weights, and should give his supporters a good run for their money at an elevated price.
                  WETHERBY
                  Race 7 No1 UKANTANGO (Nap)
Trainer: Olly Murphy – Jockey: Aidan Coleman

UKANTANGO has looked the part landing a bumper and novice hurdle since joining his trainer. The former Irish pointer is well regarded, and although in a competitive heat can complete a hat-trick and chart a course for even better things.
                  SOUTHWELL
                  Race 4 No9 HAMAAMM (Nap)
Trainer: Simon Crisford – Jockey: Harry Burns

This first division of the novice looks a weak affair, and gives HAMAAWW a fine chance to open her account. The Le Havre filly has troubled the judge on each of her three starts and also has a good draw from which to gain a handy position on this lap of the track contest.
                  Race 6 No2 AERION POWER
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Richard Kingscote

AERION POWER side stepped an engagement last week owing to unsuitable ground, but now moved onto the all-weather can prove a bet worth waiting for on his belated seasonal reappearance. The Kingman colt earned at Grade 1 courses on each of his final three outings last year, while his record on sand reads an impressive 211.

                  Place Accumulator Perm (Races 2-8)

                  2, 5 x 8, 10 x 9 x 3, 9 x 2, 3, 5 x 5, 3, 10 x 3, 9, 6

Race 7 is a 6 furlong run on dirt with an impressive 200,000 dollar purse. The favorite in the race is Key of Life at 8/5 odds. With the combination of a good trainer in Brad H. Cox and Florent Geroux as the jockey it will be very easy to see the favorite getting the win in this race. Race 7 Pick: Key of Life.

Race 8 is a 1 1/16 mile run on turf with a purse of 300,000 dollars. The favorite in the race is Dolce Zel from France at 5/2 odds. The horse that should be able to pull out the win in this race is coming from Great Britain and it is Majestic Glory who is coming in at 6/1 odds, but is trained by Todd A. Pletcher. Race 8 Pick: Majestic Glory.

The 9th race of the day is a 1 1/16 mile run on dirt with a purse of 120,000 dollars. The favorite in the race is Powder River at 2/1 odds. Look for the favorite to get the win in the race here to be Moon Swag who is coming in at 7/2 odds. Race 9 Pick: Moon Swag.

The 10th race of the day is a 5 1/2 furlong run on turf with a purse of 140,000 dollars. With the favorite here the horse that is favorite is Boldor who is coming at 4/1 odds. The lack of competition in this race here will definitely make the Steven M. Asmussen trained horse to secure the win here. Race 10 Pick: Boldor.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-The Key Is Unity; 5-Baldoro
                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The Key Is Unity was a bit unlucky when going down by a head in a similar maiden $50,000 turf affair last month and today gets an extra furlong to work with. As a one-paced grinding type, the Bill Spawr-trained gelding should appreciate today’s longer trip and with continued improvement may be capable of producing a winning late bid. Baldoro is worth using on your ticket as well. Freshened since June and exiting a series of tougher maiden special weight affairs, the Leonard Powell-trained colt is solid in the speed figure department, picks up Juan Hernandez, and appears to have found his proper level.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Butkus 3-Shady Empire
                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Butkus is racing in good form and a repeat of either one of his last two starts should be good enough to handle this modest assignment. He’s lightly raced (just nine starts) and has room for improvement that most of the others don’t. Shady Empire has been winless for a couple of years and clearly isn’t one to trust, but in this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 claimer the Kristin Mulhall-trained gelding is somewhat of a contender. First or second in four of nine career starts over the local main track, the son of Empire Way has recent numbers that fit with this group and in his second start off a layoff he has a right to produce a forward move.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Wrong Turn Cupid; 7-R Girl’s Werth It
                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Wrong Turn Cupid shows up in a $20,000 claiming grass sprint for the first time in her brief career after falling short in state-bred allowance company in her last two outings, most recently in her first start in almost a year. This is a realistic class drop for this four year old filly, who probably has her share of issues, but if she can produce a forward move she should be capable of getting back on track. R Girl’s Werth It flashed good speed for a half before faltering in a much tougher $50,000 starter’s allowance sprint at Del Mar in her first start since arriving from Gulfstream Park. If she can shake loose early without undue pressure, the Mike Puype-trained filly may take this field a long way.

                            Notable Workouts:

                            R Girl’s Werth It (Oct. 8, Santa Anita, 4f, :48h TT). Grade: B
In blinkers, in hand early, chirped to late and finished with interest, final three furlongs in :35.2. Freshened since late August and appears perked up for a good effort.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-A Little Bit Crazy; 1-Tecumseh Caroline
                            Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: A Little Bit Crazy turns back to a dirt sprint after failing as the favorite in her last two outings over a mile on grass. The switch in surface and the shortening in trip should have a positive effect on her form, so let’s put the Jonathan Wong-trained filly on top in this shallow maiden special weight state-bred affair for older fillies and mares. Tecumseh Caroline is strictly the one to beat. Solid on numbers and showing a good third place performance at Del Mar in her only prior main track outing, the daughter of Grazen isn’t a quick type and is drawn uncomfortably the rail, but in a six runner field she should be able to secure a decent trip and then have every chance.

                            Backups/savers: 2-Barnfield

Forecast: Oncoming will have to overcome his extreme outside draw in this grass miler for restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claimers, and with the auxiliary rail set at 30 feet it won’t be an easy task. However, the son of Quality Road, now in the Eddie Truman barn, has speed figures that tower over this field, so with any kind of decent racing luck he should be able to regain his winning form. For protection, you may want to include Barnfield on your ticket as a backup or a saver. The John Sadler-trained gelding exits a tougher starter’s allowance race and is lightly raced with room to improve. The son of Lookin At Lucky should be heard from late.

                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Silver Lightening was a disappointing fourth when a distant fourth and failing to duplicate her impressive debut maiden claiming victory at Del Mar two weeks previous. Perhaps the quick turnaround had a negative effect, so after being given a two month vacation she could easily bounce today. It’s encouraging that the Doug O’Neill-trained daughter of Union Rags remains protected, and with a healthy series of recent workouts on her local tab she should have every right to step forward. Smiling Princess broke her maiden two races back by seven lengths vs. maiden claimers, returned to dispose of a $32,000 field of winners by four widening lengths, and today is protected vs. starter optional claimers while seeking her third straight score. The concern is that her two victories were earned at Los Alamitos, and form from the Orange County track doesn’t always hold up at Santa Anita. We’ll see what she’s made of today.

                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The Great Haynes, first or second in six of 12 career starts, is solid on numbers and appears ready for a forward move in this allowance optional claiming turf sprint for state-bred fillies and mares. She likes to settle early and produce a late kick, and over a course that often favors the closers in one-turn races the daughter of Haynesfield should offer decent value at or near her morning line of 4-1. Queen Molotov is strictly the one to beat. She is the fastest in the field on pure numbers and projects to be forwardly place throughout and then have every chance from the quarter pole home. She is based at Golden Gate Fields and her recent workouts over that track’s all-weather surface are impressive.

                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Granada Flavor has much in his favor in this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 main track miler, and with a repeat of any one of his last three starts the Brian Koriner-trained gelding should be along in time. He was more than six lengths clear of the rest when beaten a nose last time out at this level three weeks ago and had a nice recent breeze to tick him over for a top performance today. At 5/2 on the morning line he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Gillian Elizabeth; 4-Buzz of New York
                            Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Gillian Elizabeth had a bit of rough go when beaten as the favorite in a similar turf miler for first-level allowance fillies and mare but with a clear trip today the Carla Gaines-trained filly can make amends. A two-time winner (from three starts) over the local lawn, she stretches out again to her preferred trip, retains regular pilot Joe Bravo, and should draft into a favorable second flight, stalking position. Buzz of New York, in the frame in six of seven starts since arriving from Ireland, earned a career top speed figure when a sharp runner-up at this level at Del Mar last time out and a repeat of that performance today makes her a major threat. She will be running on from off the pace. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play, with a slight preference on top to Gillian Elizabeth.

Al Cimaglia: Mohawk Park Breeders Crown Late Pick 5 Analysis

                              October 28, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the weekend with Breeders Crown Finals for two-year-olds. The top freshman trotters and pacers will square off competing for a $600,000 purse, $810,000 CDN, in Races 6-9. The 0.20 Late Pick 5 starts in Race 6, and the sequence will be my focus.

                              Race 6

1-Gaines Hanover (7/2)-Hard to find a fault with this Moreau pupil and should offer a fair price in a tough race. My only concern is drawing the rail but has been too good to leave off the ticket and should be a main player with a clean trip.
4-Celebrity Bambino (9/2)-Winner of 2 straight comes off a sharp score from the 9-hole last week. How good is this Burke trainee? My take is really good, and could gain some respect tonight. Has won 3 of 5 since returning from a sick scratch and could keep rolling.
9-Oh Well (3-1)-Wasn't super impressive last week but did what was needed to get ready for the Final and was off almost a month between starts. Melander should have this fine colt tuned up nicely and the post helps the price but may not hurt his chances.

                              Race 7

1-Charleston (5/2)-This Pelling freshman lost to #5 by less than a length in the Great Lady on 9-24 and might be peaking right now. Showed some guts to edge out #2 at the wire last week. This versatile filly likes Wbsb (3-2-1) and Dunn should provide a smooth trip.
2-Strong Poison (5-1)-Always B Miki filly raced big in the 1st start north of the border. Got on the engine from the 8-hole and lost by a neck to #1 last week. That was an impressive effort and in the last 8 starts has been now worse than 2nd with 4 pictures.
5-Slyvia Hanover (8/5)-The race should go through this gal and has only one blemish so far going 7 for 8 this year. Strutted her stuff with a strong brush down the lane after being used once to get the lead. Draws well, is looking for its 7th straight and it should be noted, was off almost a month before the last victory.

                              Race 8

4-Special Way (2-1)-This Svanstedt filly has banked over $401k in 2022 and we may not have seen her best yet. Not so sure she can win without being on top turning for the wire and there is a lot of gate speed in this field. But may not give up the lead if she gets the top.
7-Righteous Resolve (5/2)-This Ontario bred Bax trainee earned the right to take a buy last week and did just that. Sometimes the added rest is beneficial and other times not. This filly has won 8 of 9 and last started on 10-15, so should come into this race ready. Has a perfect 8 for 8 record at Wbsb and best to respect her hometown record will stay spotless.

                              Race 9

3-Confederate (7/5)-Needed a single and this wasn't a difficult choice. That said, 2-Handlelikeaporsche and 7-Stockade Seelster are not slouches but this filly was off almost a month, was 1st time Lasix and still toyed with the field. This race could easily go in sub 150 and Tetrick won't hold back as the Brown pupil has that type of speed beyond the clay at the Red Mile.

                              Race 10

1-Heavens Showgirl A (9/2)-McClure takes over for Roy and this gal comes off a sharp score with a 54.2 back-half and a 26.2 last quarter. Faces tougher foes and it will be a test. But starting from the rail shouldn't hurt, there aren't any monsters to deal with and the price should be right to take a swing.
2-Voelz Delight (5/2)-On paper the race should go through this mare, and the one below but both seem vulnerable. This Tourigny trainee is the classier of the two and can win racing on the point or coming off a helmet.
3-Dabarndawgswatchin (3-1)-This is the other dropper who faced-off in a BC Elim last week. Roy sticks and this mare is probably more trip dependent but has the speed to top this bunch.
5-Shes Got It All (10-1)-Here's a price shot to add some juice to the Pick 4 payout and Zeron taking the lines could make a considerable difference. Likes to stay inside and then rally down the lane in a hurry. This pilot knows how to master that trip.

                              0.20 Late Pick 5

                              1,4,9/1,2,5/4,7/3/1,2,3,5
                              Total Bet=$14.40

Frank Carulli: Laurel Park Late Pick 4 Analysis Friday, Oct. 28

LAUREL PARK LATE PICK 4 ANALYSIS
                                Friday, October 28

There are 10,400 combinations available in Laurel Park’s Late Pick 4 wager based on entries for this Friday, Oct. 28. It won’t be easy to hit it, but it will be rewarding for those who do. Here’s a look at the action, with a suggested $50 Late Pick 4 ticket below:

LRL 6th race (2:52 EST) -- PRINCE OF JERICHO needed one race but might not need another to break his maiden in a deep field. He chased speedy runner-up LANDON JACK while 3-wide in the second flight of runners, stayed on willingly to the wire and can turn the tables on the likely pace-setter with an extra half-furlong to run today. BARZINI improved with blinkers in his second start, dueling to the stretch in a two-turn sprint at Timonium. He finished behind R B’s The Boss, who came back to romp in a $40,000 claiming race, and ahead of two more next-out winners.

LRL 7th race (3:24 EST) -- QUEEN SHEBA tested stakes company after a deceptively strong allowance win against Maryland breds, when she was steadied along on the backstretch, trailed at the top of the stretch and surged between rivals to win. She gets plenty of pace to rally into and is a must use on the ticket in a wide-open race. EIFS, who rallied to finish in the money in all three of her grass sprints this year, is another who benefits from a projected lively pace and added ground to cover. (NOTE: If the race is switched to the main track, use numbers 4 and 8 on the ticket).

LRL 8th race (3:55 EST) -- In $5,000 starter allowance races this year, the five runners listed at 6-1 or lower on the morning line are a combined 28/6-8-5, often taking turns beating each other. Use all five on the Pick 4 ticket.

LRL 9th race (4:26 EST) – CANDELSTICK MAKER arrives for her first start at Laurel Park after a dull try in a Maiden Special Weight marathon at Delaware Park. She showed a pulse in her three previous turf routes this year against the likes of Masabeeh, who won a $30,000/n2L claimer at Aqueduct this month, and Miss Bonnie T and Bayou Wind, who came back with allowance victories in their next starts. CHASING ARTEMUS is a live longshot to include on the ticket. She adds Lasix and blinkers for a 21-percent claim barn and her dam, Thunderous Lady, was 3-8 with $82k in earnings on the lawn. BALI KUTA stalked a solid pace at Kentucky Downs while 4-wide and tired, but she finished ahead of She’s All Class, a wire-to-wire MSW winner on the Keeneland main track next out. SINGALONG finished gamely for third at this distance two starts back, a neck behind favorite LUMINIST, who is a must use on turf or dirt if she draws into the race from the also-eligible list.

                                Suggested 50-cent Ticket
                                LRL 6th Race: 2, 12
                                LRL 7th Race: 1, 9
                                LRL 8th Race: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8
                                LRL 9th Race: 2, 4, 5, 10, 12
