BC Saturday race previews (Part 2)
    Real Writing on Racing
    Charles Simon

Welcome to the Going in Circles Saturday BC Race Preview (Part 2). We will be covering the BC Turf Mile, Distaff, Turf and Classic in the second part of the Saturday preview. As always we don’t make picks but offer previews, pointers, ideas/opinions and angles that you might not see elsewhere. We will include some videos but because of the volume of races and horses, not as many as with the two year olds. You can find a huge library of pertinent videos for all the races on our YouTube channel HERE! Let’s get to it!

BC Turf Mile Gr I $2000000 1 mile grass 3&up

Pogo (Ire) - Euro-invader should be in first flight while saving ground, isn’t among the favorites but rates a shot at a big price with inside trip. Here is his last race, The TIEF stakes (Gr II) at Newmarket. Don’t ignore!

Shirl’s Speight - upset the Maker’s Mark Mile over this course in April but hasn’t found that form again.

Dreamloper (Ire) - I’m against her considering that so many seem to be on her bandwagon based on one big race last out on very soft ground. Here is that race, the Prix de Moulin. She will beat me if she wins

Modern Games (Ire) - Appleby/Buick with the likely favorite. Hard to knock anything except the price which won’t be big. Here he is in the Woodbine Mile (Gr I)

Smooth Like Straight - always fires, rarely wins. Likely pacesetter will take them as far as he can go. If Beyond Brilliant were to scratch, it would upgrade his chances

Ivar (Brz) - tends to get shuffled back in bulky groups and this is 14 deep. Hard to believe he only has 14 lifetime starts because he has seemingly been around forever. Can see him getting on the board with a fortuitous trip

Beyond Brilliant - part of the pace, keeping Smooth Like Straight honest is his main contribution

Regal Glory - always fires and seems to be in position to get a good trip stalking a hot pace. A win here likely gets her an Eclipse award…and a fitting career capper

Malavath (Ire) - form seems a little light for this breed of cat.

Order of Australia (Ire) - missed the wedding two year ago….

Annapolis - rapidly improving three year old may be looking at tough outside trip but is in career form

King Cause - wide trip is likely from outside post for horse that looks in deep already.

Kinross (GB) - tough post for ultra-consistent invader, can he get the two turn mile especially with the potential ground loss from the wide draw?

Domestic Spending - close to impossible task off 448 day layoff, cutting back to distance that’s less than ideal. Hard to see a trip where he can win this.

    BC Distaff Gr I $2000000 9 furlongs dirt F/M

Malathaat - classy mare might get trapped on rail chasing pacesetters, loves Keeneland, can she outkick her younger stablemate?

Blue Stripe (Arg) - quality mare that might be half notch below very best

Secret Oath - has danced every dance, does she have any improvement left in her? She will need it.

Clairiere - how badly will the gate incident at the Spa still affect her a few months later? Before that she was the division leader but I’m skeptical she can get right back to that level

Awake at Midnyte - seems overmatched

Nest - taken her game to a level rarely seen by three year old fillies. She has the quickness to rapidly accelerate combined with great stamina, a lethal combination for her rivals. The one to beat.

Search Results - don’t think she is at her best at 9 furlongs, keeps Society honest on the front end though.

Society - late bloomer will try to shake free on the lead and hold on late. A surprising number of ‘experts’ are on her bandwagon and if Search Results weren’t in here, I could see it playing out that way. However Prat isn’t gonna let her steal away too long and when Nest makes that patented and powerful 1/4 pole move…

    BC Turf Gr I $4000000 12 furlongs grass 3&up

Bye Bye Melvin - pace setting type seems below grade I level quality

War Like Goddess - Mott chose to try the boys at 12 furlongs feeling the FM turf was too short for her to be at her best. This isn’t the best version of the Turf so she has a fighting shot though we prefer others

Stone Age (Ire) - tends to get one paced in big events. Prefer other Euro’s to him but prefer him to any of the domestic runners

Broome (Ire) - erratic 6yo just missed in last years Turf. Back for more and has to rate a punchers chance as he is good enough when he fires his best shot though it’s hard to know when that is coming. Reunited with Irad who rode in Turf last year

Rebel’s Romance (Ire) - Appleby gelding has been running a clinic over in Germany with 2 consecutive grade 1 (check out his Preis von Europa at Cologne) to add to his current 4 race win streak since being switched back to the grass. The 2021 UAE Derby winner on the dirt, he is 4 for 4 on grass and at 12 furlong distance! Ladies and gentlemen…Chuck Appleby!

Channel Maker - seems ready for his annual attendance of the pace in the Turf without any real chance of winning

Nations Pride - three year old has been throttling US based sophomores including Mile contender, Annapolis. Check out his latest destruction at BAQ, the Caesar’s Jockey Club Derby (Gr III). Distance won’t be an issue and Buick chooses him over Rebel’s Romance despite that one’s obvious credentials. The one to beat.

Master Piece (Chi) - one run closer might find these waters a little too deep

Gold Phoenix (Ire) - four year old gelding has had nice year though he hasn’t shown that this class of race is within his scope yet.

Red Knight - had a nightmare of a trip in the Sycamore (Gr III) but 8 year old has never given off grade I vibes before anyway.

Mishriff (Ire) - absolute top class horse hasn’t been in the best of form in 2022. Adds blinkers off of poor effort which seems a little desperation, trying to reverse that trend. Hard to recommend in current form

Nautilus (Brz) - Brazilian import is a mystery at this class level. Hasn’t run since June 26 but first time Lobo is 39%, though admittedly none were a South American import in the Breeders Cup Turf.

Highland Chief (Ire) - got dream, rail-skimming trip in the Sycamore (Gr III) a few weeks back. Post 13 means that another inside trip is unlikely, as are his chances to win

    BC Classic Gr I $6000000 10 furlongs dirt 3&up

Taiba - three year old has displayed improvement throughout the year after getting a late start on the Kentucky Derby trail. Faces elders for the first time and figures to sit behind the expected duel between Life is Good and Flightline. The question is does he move forward once again and become a threat to those two or is he just jockeying for position to pick up minor spoils?

Life is Good - has sprinters speed that he has been able to stretch out to 9 furlongs but failed to last the 10 furlong trip in his only attempt at it (Dubai World Cup). The track surface that day was unusually deep and has been blamed for the defeat yet a couple of less than powerful performances in the Whitney (Gr I) and Woodward (Gr I) have not exactly been flattering in regard to him getting that extra furlong. When you add in the presence of Flightline, another colt who has that same rapid early foot but who is a proven performer at 10 furlongs…the doubts grow louder. He has one chance to redeem himself in that regard and that’s Saturday and while it seems the entire world has abandoned his bandwagon, IF he can pull off the upset, go wire to wire and beat the mighty Flightline…a Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame nod await. If not…neither…a single race has rarely meant soooooo much to a horses legacy.

Happy Saver - has been in chase mode most of the year picking up nice runner-up checks while never really threatening to win. Has been battling a quarter crack on a hind foot which seems like poor timing more than anything.

Flightline - The Tapit colt has loomed all year as he rarely appears in the starting gate but when he does, the racing world stops to see him burn. He was super impressive in the Met Mile (Gr I), overcoming a poor start to dust a representative field and then otherworldly when dispatching a mediocre bunch in a Pacific Classic (Gr I) rout. This isn’t an ordinary group he is facing Saturday, Life is Good is the highest quality speed horse he will ever face, Epicenter and Taiba are very good, progressive three year olds, Olympiad and Hot Rod Charlie had solid four year old campaigns, Rich Strike won the Derby. Yet no one expects him to lose, the question asked is just how far will he win by…and a three race, horse of the year campaign seems oddly acceptable which is as good of a measure as to how the big colt is viewed as any. This is likely it for his career, at least on the track as there really aren’t any worlds left to conquer, there are no mystery horses out there that might be lurking, he has won grade 1 races with ease at 7f, a mile and 10 furlongs already. Secretariat won his final two on the grass but that won’t happen today with a horse that is likely worth in excess of 80 million dollars already. Let’s just hope that Life is Good is up to the task, that the two hook up and provide us with a glimpse at what racing at the very highest level used to look like, where the two best horses leave it all out there, there is no “other race” to worry about, the only thing that matters is today and winning now. To the victors the spoils…

Hod Rod Charlie - he won the Lukas Classic (Gr II) with a game effort before “shoe gate” erupted and the silliness of HISA’s rules came into play. Figures to get a front two seat to Life is Good/Flightline and should be in a stalking position down the backside, hoping to pick up the pieces left by that clash of titans. Can he outkick the three year olds and Olympiad for a big piece of the pie? I’m fading.

Epicenter - the leader of the glamour boy, three year old division seems like yesterdays news considering he hasn’t run since August where he destroyed most of the rest of the crop in the Travers. His quality isn’t in question but he has a lot to lose here as a win by Taiba or (gasp ) Rich Strike will cost him the three year old championship while the Not This Time colt winning would trigger all the spoils heading to his corner, the three year old championship PLUS Horse of the Year title as well. He figures to lurk in fifth or so down the backside, biding time to see who emerges from the speed duel and trying to steadily pick up the leaders while outrunning the rest of his rivals, who are also going to be in chase mode. Epicenter has surprised us with unexpected improvement a few times already in his career, he will NEED to do it once again to have any shot at glory in the tenth and final furlong on Saturday.

Olympiad - He is the steady grinder of the division. Not flashy, not super fast, not displaying high speed, yet still very effective, he just keeps coming at you. That style seems like it would be at a disadvantage on Saturday as the pace figures to be rapid and he may strain to stay within striking distance. The Speightstown (how great of a sire has he turned out to be!) colt doesn’t have a huge finishing kick to make up 10 or more lengths if the leaders get away from him so look for Alvarado to push him early to stay closer than he may feel comfortable naturally doing.

Rich Strike - somewhere this summer the unlikely Derby winner started to improve and while it hasn’t translated into wins, he clearly has not only gotten better but looks to be a real player heading into next season. Still he has done his very best work at Churchill and this Keeneland track surface doesn’t figure to match up well with his favored running style. Leon should just lag and make one late run, trying to pick up as many pieces as he can and if the other main contenders get burned by laying too close to the potential supersonic pace, might hit the board…which would be an accomplishment in itself.

Race of the Week: Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland | Saturday

        November 3, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

The Breeders’ Cup culminates with the $6 million Classic on Saturday at Keeneland. Let’s meet the contenders for the 1/ST BET Race of the Week.

        1-TAIBA
The Santa Anita Derby and Pennsylvania Derby winner may have been too lightly raced to be his best in the Run for the Roses in May, but that’s to his advantage as a fresher horse for the Classic. He should be finishing with interest from mid-pack.

        2-LIFE IS GOOD
Hero of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile as well as January’s Pegasus World Cup – when defeating reigning Classic winner Knicks Go – there’s no denying his speed. He’s expected to be in front early and take them as far as he can. The hurdle will be the mile and one-quarter distance.

        3- HAPPY SAVER
This two-time winner of the prestigious Jockey Club Gold Cup will be the longest shot in the race, testament to the depth of this year’s Classic. He has been battling some hoof issues this week at Keeneland, increasing the difficulty of his challenge.

        4-FLIGHTLINE
Unbeaten in 5 career starts and the world’s No. 1-ranked racehorse, Flightline has answered the call traveling outside of California (winning the Grade 1 Met Mile at New York’s Belmont) and handling the Classic’s mile and one-quarter distance (by nearly 20 lengths in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar). Expect his speed to put him into the race early, likely sitting just behind Life Is Good. From there, race on!

        5-HOT ROD CHARLIE
Veteran of the 2021 Triple Crown, he’s training as well as he’s ever looked going into a race. It’s likely we see his very best performance – and he’ll need it against the toughest challengers he’s faced. He finished fourth in this race last year behind Knicks Go and typically does his running near the front of the pack.

        6-EPICENTER
A victory in the $6 million Classic would erase some of the sting from second-place finishes in this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness. His Travers victory in August stamped him America’s leading 3-year-old. Epicenter has won races from nearly every spot in the pack, so his pace versatility will come in handy In a race expected to be very fast early.

        7-OLYMPIAD
He’s had a fantastic 2022 in races between 1-1/16 and 1-1/4 miles, winning 6 of 7 starts. The Classic will be a major distance challenge with the obvious pace presence of Life Is Good and Flightline. The slow pace in his Jockey Club Gold Cup victory at a mile and one-quarter will be a distant memory when these runners hit the far turn at Keeneland on Saturday.

        8-RICH STRIKE
Last, but not least, meet the Kentucky Derby’s most unlikely winner in about a century. His 80-1 shocker on the first Saturday in May will remain historic. Do it again in beating Flightline and company? That would be epic. His rallying style would benefit if Flightline, Life Is Good and perhaps Hot Rod Charlie decide to duke it out too early, too fast.

Now that you know the Classic contenders, head to the 1/ST BET Breeder’s Cup Wager Guide for picks, stats, analysis and more from Eddie Olczyk, the 1/ST BET artificial intelligence and our stable of handicappers.

His 5 1/4-length Travers triumph was stellar

          Nice-price danger: none

Note: Flightline is my choice as the “most probable winner” at this year’s Breeders’ Cup. My most probable Breeders’ Cup winner has won in 13 of the 18 last years.

Nick Tammaro has installed Flightline as a 3-5 morning-line favorite. That’s fine. But as someone who has made the morning line for seven Breeders’ Cup, most recently last year at Del Mar, I would have made him 2-5.

As I have written previously for Xpressbet.com, I think he has an excellent chance to break Easy Goer’s record for lowest odds by a BC Classic favorite. Easy Goer was 1-2 when he finished second to 2-1 Sunday Silence in the 1989 BC Classic at Gulfstream Park.

One of the reasons I will not be surprised if Flightline’s off odds are lower than 3-5 is he’s undefeated in five starts by a combined margin of 62 3/4 lengths, which gives him an aura of invincibility. Also, I don’t expect any of Flightline’s BC Classic opponents to attract enough money to be anywhere close to 2-1. That’s an indication to me that Flightline’s BC Classic odds will be lower than Easy Goer’s 1-2 price in 1989.

Other than Flightline, my next “most probable winner” this year is Golden Pal in the BC Turf Sprint.

Below is a list of my most probable Breeders’ Cup winner for each year going back to 2004:

2021 Gamine in Filly & Mare Sprint (finished third)
2020 Golden Pal in the Juvenile Turf Sprint (won)
          2019 Midnight Bisou (finished second)
2018 Newspaperofrecord in the Juvenile Fillies Turf (won)
2017 Bolt d’Oro in the Juvenile (finished third)
2016 Dortmund in the Dirt Mile (finished fourth)
2015 Songbird in the Juvenile Fillies (won)
2014 Goldencents in the Dirt Mile (won)
2013 Wise Dan in the Mile (won)
2012 Groupie Doll in the Filly & Mare Sprint (won)
2011 Goldikova in the Mile (won)
2010 Goldikova in the Mile (won)
2009 Zenyatta in the Classic (won)
2008 Zenyatta in the Ladies’ Classic (won)
2007 Midnight Lute in the Sprint (won)
2006 Ouija Board in the Filly & Mare Turf (won)
2005 Ouija Board in the Filly & Mare Turf (finished second)
2004 Ouija Board in the Filly & Mare Turf (won)

          UNDERCARD SPOTLIGHT

In the first race at Keeneland on Saturday (Nov. 5), Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert unveils a $2.3 million auction purchase by the name of Arabian Knight. Yes, the Uncle Mo colt is the 2-1 morning-line favorite. But I can tell you that I will be thrilled if he does not go off at lower odds than 2-1 because I will be making a win wager on him no matter how low the price goes.

Check out Arabian Knight’s Oct. 29 workout at Santa Anita on XBTV: https://www.xbtv.com/video/into-misc...ber-29th-2022/

In that Oct. 29 team drill, Arabian Knight, a 2-year-old, held his own quite nicely with 4-year-old Laurel River.

Laurel River is a contender in the fifth race at Keeneland on Saturday, the BC Dirt Mile. In his most recent start, Laurel River won Del Mar’s Grade II Pat O’Brien Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths on Aug. 27, a sparkling effort that produced a 108 Beyer Speed Figure.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival wraps on Saturday afternoon with a nine-race card scheduled for VRC Champions Stakes Day. Headlined by three Group 1 events — the VRC Champions Stakes, Champions Mile and Champions Sprint — the day is littered with superstars of the turf. The day of racing commences at 12:40pm AEDT.

Perfect conditions are set to greet punters with the track coming up a Good 4, whilst the rail comes out 9m the entire circuit.

                  Race 1: BM90 Handicap (1600m)

We kick off Champions Stakes Day with a competitive BM90 over the infamous Flemington mile and we are hoping that Unannimous can bounce back into the winner’s stall. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained five-year-old managed to get the better of subsequent Coongy Cup winner Gunstock two starts back, but then was found out in tougher company at Randwick last time out. From barrier one under Ben Melham, he is sure to gain the suck run in transit and with even luck in the home straight, we expect Unanimous to bound clear and prove too hard to gun down in the opener.

                  Selections:

                  Race 2: Grand Handicap (2000m)

We do not need to wait too long for our best bet of the day, as the Phillip Stokes-trained Aesop steps out in the second event of the day. The five-year-old gelding was a complete forgive run at Caulfield last time out where he simply did not handle the Heavy 8 and is sure to appreciate the firmer ground on Saturday. From barrier 11, look for Jamie Kah to have this bloke settled midfield with cover and if he is anywhere near his performance in his dominant victory at Sandown two starts back over 1800m, he looks the one to beat. He should be rock hard fit and under a well-rated steer from Kah, Aesop should have a bit too much class about him in a field like this.

                  Selections:

                  silks8

Race 3: The Amanda Elliott (1400m)

The Amanda Elliott at Listed level looks to be one of the more open contests of the day on Saturday and we are looking to strike some value with the Grahame Begg-trained Magic Time. The three-year-old filly was breathtaking on debut on the Pakenham synthetic and despite this undoubtedly being a big step up in grade, she strikes a winnable stakes race second-up. From barrier 15, look for Magic Time under Jordan Childs to charge across and find the rail and take up an uncontested lead. If Childs can gain a cheap sectional or two, the Hellbent filly looks to have a fair bit of class about her and should give a sight out in front at a nice each-way price.

Race 4: Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m)

It paid to be with the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace and Mark Zahra combination in the Melbourne Cup and we hope the same partnership can lift Persan to an overdue victory. The six-year-old gelding has been racing in decent enough form on rain-affected ground this campaign but comes back to a firmer deck on Saturday and it should suit him perfectly. He is a dour stayer these stays and with four wins and two minor placings to his name at Flemington, we anticipate he will relish getting back to his favourite track. In a race where there does not look to be too much early speed, we anticipate Zahra will take up the running from the low draw of barrier four. If he can get away with a cheap run out in front, there is no reason why Persan cannot outstays his rivals in an all the way victory.

                  Race 5: Matriarch Stakes (2000m)

The ever-prominent combination of Chris Waller and James McDonald look the one to side with when they partner up with Atishu in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes. The five-year-old mare was entitled to finish closer than what she did in the Empire Rose Stakes last time out where she was held up for a run at just the wrong time. She looks to be screaming out for 2000m which she gets on the weekend and considering she has already won at the trip, with a few of her rivals questionable at the distance, she’s the one we are happy to side with. Look for JMac to have her parked towards the rear of the field, but armed with a blistering turn of foot we expect to see Atishu flash home over the top of her rivals and bring up an overdue victory.

                  Race 6: Champions Sprint (1200m)

The Group 1 Champions Sprint is the first of three Group 1 events on Saturday’s card and is also the first leg of the quaddie. Nature Strip ($2.20) and Giga Kick ($6) are set to duke it out down the Flemington straight in what online Bookmakers deemed to be a two-horse affair. Last start Manikato Stakes winner Bella Nipotina ($7.50) is the only other runner under a $20 quote.

Can Nature Strip bring up a third win in this race? Or can Giga Kick spoil the party once more?

                  Race 7: Champions Mile (1600m)

The Champions Mile has attracted a strong field of 11 milers where seven of the combatants have already saluted at Group 1 level. The surprise packet of the spring Private Eye ($3.50) has opened as favourite, whilst My Oberon ($5), Cascadian ($6) and Alligator Blood ($6.50) are all expected to feature in the finish of the Champions Mile.

Race 8: VRC Champions Stakes (2000m)

The VRC Champions Stakes has assembled a star-studded field that has the race feeling like Cox Plate 2.0. Anamoe ($2.10) headlines the field and is a deserving favourite in the event, but can the likes of I’m Thunderstruck ($4.40) and Zaaki ($9.00) cause an upset in the feature event of the day on Saturday?

                  Race 9: Grand Handicap (1100m)

We will be looking to round out the Melbourne Cup Carnival with Hypothetical at a nice each-way price over the 1100m. The four-year-old mare from the Anthony & Sam Freedman barn managed to overcome a tough run when wide and on speed at Geelong on October 19 and won in pretty dominant fashion. She has won three of her four starts so far in her short career and as long as she handles the straight, there is no reason why she cannot build on that record on Saturday. With an abundance of early speed in the race, we expect Ben Melham to take a sit just off the hot tempo and when asked for an effort, Hypothetical looks to have the turn of foot to put a field like this away in a couple of strides.

Rosehill Gardens will close out the Sydney Spring Carnival with Five Diamonds Ladies Day. The last day of the carnival will feature massive 10-race program on Saturday, highlighted by the Five Diamonds. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with some good weather on the forecast once again this weekend, we should still be on a Good track come Saturday. The rail will be in the 3m position, and racing gets underway at 12:25pm AEDT.

                    Best Bet: Naval Seal

Our best bet of the day will come up in race four, where we are siding with the Chris Waller-trained Naval Seal, who will be second-up this Saturday after running a very good race first-up over 1600m behind Mahagoni on October 22. This lightly race four-year-old gelding will have taken a lot of benefit from his first run back from a spell, and will now be ready to win in a race that looks very winnable over 1800m. William Pike will stick with this talented galloper after riding him first-up last start, while he also rode this guy when he won last preparation over the Rosehill 1800m. This son of Snitzel has been to this track and trip once before for a win, so we don’t see any reason why he cannot go two from two on Saturday. Pike will have him out the back and looking to run on, so we expect to see him getting to the outside on the home turn and letting down with a big finish late.

                    Next Best: Barber

We were with James Cummings-trained Barber at his race debut on October 22, where he just got over the line to win over 1000m at Randwick. This son of Exceed And Excel was able to win on debut, but he didn’t want to put them away and win with ease, so with the race experience and the extra 100m on Saturday, this guy should be much better second-up. Hugh Bowman will take the ride on Saturday and from barrier 16 this two-year-old colt will need all of Bowman’s experience to get him into a good position upon settling, whether that be out the back or pushing forward to be on-pace once again. If he gets any luck in running and gets a chance to let down with 200m to go, this guy will take a lot of beating.

                    Best Value: Ventura Ocean

In the fifth race of the day, we think that the Kris Lees-trained Ventura Ocean looks to be a great value chance to take out the Benchmark 78 over 1200m. This seven-year-old gelding will return from a four month spell and he has a decent fresh record, with the two wins and a second from seven first-up starts throughout his career. This son of Raven’s Pass will benefit from Dylan Gibbons’ 2kg claim which brings him right into this race, as he is handicapped with the top-weight on Saturday. From barrier eight, we expect Gibbons to try and cross the field and slot in just behind the speed to give him every chance to record his sixth win.

We head to Doomben in sunny Queensland this weekend for a competitive nine-race metropolitan program. The rail is out 5.5m for the entire circuit, and with nothing but clear weather forecast, we’ll be racing on a Good 4 surface. Let’s see if we can find some winners on what looks a difficult card on paper. The first race is set to get underway at 1:08pm AEDT.
                      Best Bet: Chrysaor

We don’t have to wait long at all for our best of the day as it comes in race one on the card. Chrysaor is a two-year-old colt out of the Chris Waller yard and will be looking to break his maiden on debut in this 1110m contest against his age group. While he obviously lacks race experience, so does most of this field with several of the market-favoured runners coming from the trials to the track. This colt by Better Than Ready looked to have trialled impressively at Beaudesert on October 11, leading throughout to take it out by 0.8 lengths. The Waller team has put him away since, and this looks to have been the target a long way out. James Orman gets the booking and will look to lead and get his rivals chasing a long way from home, but we think Chrysaor will prove too strong.
                      Best Bet

                      Race 1 – #3 Chrysaor (3)

                      $2.70 with Bet365
                      Next Best: Bulloo

We tipped Bulloo last weekend, and although she was scratched due to unsuitable conditions, we’re happy to back up yet again with this mare by Written Tycoon. Stuart Kendrick is clearly looking for dry ground to kick off her campaign this preparation and should get exact that this weekend at Doomben. With a terrific trial under her belt and a great first-up strike rate of three starts for two wins, Bulloo looks set to run a bold race over the 1200m. Her form references last preparation behind horses like Ranch Hand on May 14 and Minsk Moment on April 30 at Eagle Farm have her set to be much better than the BM70 company she finds on Saturday. Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s claim of the 1.5kg will be much appreciated as he looks to get on the leader’s back from gate two before motoring past them to score well.
                      Next Best

                      Race 3 – #3 Bulloo (2)

                      $3 with Neds
                      Best Value: Moktaffy

We look to the first leg of the quaddie for our best each-way play of the afternoon with the Chris Waller-trained Moktaffy. After a month let-up, this gelding by Lope De Vega steps back to the mile after running behind So Dapper over 1800m at Eagle Farm last time out on October 1. He was only beaten by 2.4 lengths that day and was in a much tougher BM75 race than what he finds on Saturday. This Class 3 contest over the 1630m looks a much more winnable task for Moktaffy, and with a very manageable 57.5kg in the saddle, he looks well placed to make it career win number three provided James Orman can find a midfield sit with some cover. He’s been beaten favourite his last two starts, so at close to double-figure odds with top online Bookmakers he’s got to be a bet here.

We go back to the Morphettville Parks track this Saturday for a competitive nine-race card. The track is currently rated as a Soft 5, but with good weather around on Friday and Saturday, we should get an upgrade to a Good track on race day. The rail will be in the 4m position for the entire circuit, and racing gets underway at 12:22pm ACDT.
                        Best Bet: Daring Move

In the Benchmark 86 Handicap over 1000m for the speedsters, we will be siding with the Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained Daring Move as she looks to complete a hattrick of wins on Saturday. This four-year-old mare has compiled an ultra-impressive record throughout her career, winning four from six to date, with all four of those wins coming at the 1000m. Even though this girl hasn’t been to Benchmark 86 grade before, her last two wins have been impressive and her on-pace racing style gives her every chance, especially on the Parks track which seems to favour leaders. With a lot of natural leaders and many of them coming from wider barriers, Barend Vorster should be able to sit in the one-one and come off the leader’s heels in the straight to hopefully run away with the prize late.

                        Next Best: Neodium

Our next best bet of the day will be the Phillip Stokes-trained Neodium who will be looking to notch up his third win in a row for the preparation. This six-year-old gelding has been very good this preparation winning his last two starts over 1550m and considering he now drops back to the 1400m, he is a very live chance in this race on Saturday. This son of Terango will aid from Logan McNeil’s claim of 3kg, helping him roll along at the front of the field at his own pace. He has drawn a sticky barrier, drawing barrier 14 of 18, but he will want to lead, so if McNeil can cross the field and not do too much work early on, this guy will take some catching in the concluding stages.

                        Best Value: Territory Titan

The James & Lisa Dodgson-trained Territory Titan will come back from the Listed Seymour Cup to a Benchmark 82 and he looks a very good chance at odds to take out this race over 1550m. This seven-year-old gelding will push forward from barrier 11 of 12 and look to lead the field for the majority of the 1550m. Jarrod Lorensini will retain the ride after his ride on this guy in the Seymour Cup, and hopefully with his superior gate speed he should find the front and be very hard to run down.

Ascot Racecourse will host a huge nine-race card this Saturday, highlighted by the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes over 1400m. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with warm weather and no rain on the forecast, we should still be around that rating come race day. The rail will be in the 3m position, and the first race kicks off at 12:34pm AWST.
Lee Steere Stakes Tip: God Has Chosen

The feature race of the day is the Group 2, $250,000 Lee Steere Stakes over 1400m, and we will be siding with the Donna Riordan-trained God Has Chosen. This five-year-old gelding has a very impressive record for his career, recording eight wins in his first 15 starts and he is also three from three second-up, which is how he hits this race on Saturday. Returning from a spell last start, this son of Playing God was too far back in the Group 3 Eurythmic Stakes but he did run the fastest last 400m in the race to finish eighth by just over three lengths. If Joseph Azzopardi can get this guy to settle at the back of this smaller field and be hitting the outside on the turn, he will be very strong late and hard to hold out.

                          Best Bet: Bustler

In the Listed Farietha Stakes for the three-year-old colts and geldings over 1400m we have sided with the unbeaten, Bustler, for the Neville Parnham yard. This three-year-old gelding has won his first three starts in his career over 1000m and 1200m, meaning this race on Saturday will be his first start over 1400m. After running away from the field at his most recent start, we expect that the 1400m will be no problem for this son of Playing God, who will be looking to go four from four to start his very bright career. Steven Parnham has ridden this talented galloper at all three of his race starts, so he will know exactly what this guy likes and how to settle him. All he needs is a bit of luck in running and he should be winning his first Listed race of his career.

                          Race 5 – silks#5 Bustler (5)

Next Best Bet: Swear To God

Another talented lightly raced galloper is the three-year-old colt for the Russell Stewart yard, Swear To God, who will be looking for his fourth win at his sixth career start. At his first five starts, this son of Playing God has never missed the placings. At his most recent start he had to weave his way through a gap halfway down the straight and he was punched out to record a tough win over 1200m at Ascot. Laqdar Ramoly will take the ride once again on this talented colt after riding him to victory last start, and if he can find a similar position in running on Saturday this guy will have every chance to record win number four of his career.

                          Best Value: Capricorn Man

The Sean & Jake Casey-trained Capricorn Man presents good value in the second race of the day, after running a good third behind Bustler on October 22 last start. This three-year-old colt has a good record at the Ascot 1200m, recording two wins and a third place at four career starts. This gelding is in great form at the moment and coming into this three-year-old One Metro Win Handicap, he finds another winnable race with the aid of Kershaw Dhurun’s 2kg claim. With no other speed influence in the race, this guy should be able to find the lead uncontested, and if that is the case he will be very hard to run down in the straight.

We are back in Alice Springs this Saturday afternoon for a five-race meeting out of Pioneer Park. HorseBetting’s NT racing analyst has looked over the card and picked out his best bets for the day’s action.
                            Race 1 (1.36pm) – $19,425 Centreline Saddlery & Country Outfitters 0-66 Handicap (1200m)

Brat has produced mixed form since arriving in the Red Centre after six winless starts in Victoria, but he appears to be back in business after stringing two wins together. The four-year-old gelding started out with three runs at Pioneer Park in July for a fourth over 1200m (Class 2) and victory in a 1200m maiden before coming eighth over 1400m (Class 2). Brat was a little rusty when he returned after a month in the paddock finishing fifth over 1100m (Class 2) before clicking into gear. A win over 1200m (Class 2) on September 11 was followed by a win over 1200m (0-58) on September 25. He is also in the box seat as neither of the four other runners in the race for the three- and four-year-olds have won over 1200m. Kikuyu produced a big finish last Saturday to win an 1100m maiden in impressive fashion. Last start winner Ginger Creek, who has a 3kg claim, won on his NT debut over 1100m (Class 2) on October 16 when he just pipped Esashi and Manhattan Man, who has a 4kg claim – the two other starters on Saturday.

                            Race 2 (2.16pm) – $18,375 Congratulations Premiership Trainer Lisa Whittle Class 2 Hcp (1100m)

Delago Lad made his debut at Pioneer Park last Saturday and left his mark with an outstanding win over 1000m (BM54). The five-year-old gelding jumped from the outside barrier in the eight-horse field and settled three wide outside the two other leaders. Turning for home, Delago Lad found another gear to street his rivals by three and a half lengths. Only has to repeat that effort and he will take some stopping, but he has never won beyond 1000m and once again jumps from the outside gate in the six-horse field. It was hard to fault the start of Delago Lad’s career in SA mid-way through 2021, but his form soured and in five starts in 2022 he finished 4th, 9th, 10th, 10th and 14th. Bold Tropic was placed in two of three starts and then won a 1000m maiden on October 8 before a last start fourth over 1000m (BM54) three weeks ago. Vega Prince hasn’t been too far away in his past four starts, so can he win the race named in honour of his trainer? Fat Impacta claims 4kg and should complete your first four.

                            Race 2 – #1 Delago Lad (6)

                            Race 3 (2.56pm) – $19,425 Ladbrokes Odds Boost 0-64 Handicap (1000m)

Intercontinental also starts from the outside gate, but it shouldn’t prove a hurdle. The six-year-old gelding is the best horse in the race. He should start as a warm favourite and it would be surprising if didn’t win. In 21 starts in NSW and the ACT at the start of his career, Intercontinental won a 1460m maiden at Queanbeyan in November 2019 and over 1200m (Class 1) at Canberra in May 2020. A horse who can prove tough to beat if he settles in front, Intercontinental boasts a terrific record in the Red Centre since debuting in November last year – 14 starts for five wins, three seconds, a third and two fourths. A second over 1000m (0-70) on September 25 was followed by a win over 1200m (0-64) on October 8 before a last start second over 1100m (0-70) three weeks ago. Me Cabo is handy and claims 4kg, but hasn’t raced since August 26. Lido Beach, who claims 3kg, and Military Forces return from long spells. Fair Go debuts in Alice after a last start eighth over 1100m (0-58) at Wangaratta on October 2.

Qualis has had his ups and downs in his career, but he has suddenly sprung too life. In three of his past four Alice starts, the five-year-old gelding has saluted and is aiming to make it three in a row. Returning from the Darwin Cup Carnival, Qualis was a first up seventh over 1100m (Class 2) on August 20 before winning over 1200m (BM54) the following week. A fourth over 1200m (Class 2) on September 11 was followed by a win two weeks later over 1400m (BM54) carrying 58kg before a last start win over 1600m (0-58) lumping 59kg a month ago. In seven other starts in the NT since July 2021, Qualis has managed a third in Darwin and Alice Springs. The Chaplain is racing well and finished strongly for a last start second over 1400m (0-64) last Saturday, but carries an extra 1.5kg. Dismiss Harbour Express at your peril as he has posted two wins and a second in his past three starts, but he hasn’t had much of a break since April. Despite having never won over 1400m, Abreha must be respected.

Arrogant Miss ended a drought that extended back to Anzac Day 2020 when she won just her second race over 1400m (0-64) last Saturday. The six-year-old mare settled behind the leaders in third place before taking off at the 600m to record an emphatic three length victory. A second over 1000m (Open) on May 29 was followed by a third over 1000m (0-70) before Arrogant Miss wound up in Broome and Kununurra. Since returning to the Red Centre, she has managed a third over 1000m (0-70) on September 25 and a second over 1200m (0-64) on October 8 before her last start win. The mare has never raced beyond 1400m, but she was good last weekend lumping 54.5kg and this week a 4kg claim will see her carry 51kg. Roughly, who still continues to race well and will pose a threat, had never won over 1400m and 1600m at Pioneer Park before saluting on September 25 and October 16. Winter Harbour hasn’t missed a place over 1400m or 1600m in his past five starts and with a 3kg claim is a strong contender. Lunch Session has a good record at Pioneer Park (7-2-1-2) and although he hasn’t raced since posting back to back wins at Kununurra on September 3 he’s clearly in the mix.

The Group 1 Champions Sprint (1200m) has attracted a strong field of 15 of the country’s best sprinters for the weight-for-age event down the famous ‘Flemington six’ on Saturday afternoon.

Nature Strip ($2.20) and Giga Kick ($6) dominate the market with online Bookmakers, with ‘The Strip’ looking to turn the tables on Giga Kick from when they clashed in The Everest. Last-start Manikato Stakes victor Bella Nipotina ($7.50) is the only other sprinter given a chance.

The speed map looks to be a simple one. Nature Strip and Front Page will be setting the pace out in front, with Rothfire and The Astrologist not far away throughout. The likes of The Inferno, September Run and Masked Crusader will be the ones looking to swoop from the rear of the field.

Continue reading for HorseBetting’s top selections and $100 betting strategy for the 2022 Champions Sprint.

Nature Strip is the best sprinter in the world and he returns to one of his favourite tracks, where he boasts six wins and two seconds from nine starts down the straight. He forced to travel three wide with no cover in The Everest last time out when swamped inside the final 100m by the likes of Giga Kick and Private Eye. However, his win the start prior in the Group 2 Shorts suggested he is still the big dog at the table and with a near bomb-proof third-up record (9: 7-0-0), Nature Strip looks a clear on top selection in the Champions Sprint. Look for James McDonald to have him cruising out in front and when asked for an effort, we expect Nature Strip to have too much left in reserve.

Giga Kick has not even begun to reach his ceiling, which is scary considering he has already conquered The Everest. The Clayton Douglas-trained three-year-old is unbeaten through five runs and handled the step up in class with great aplomb and who is to say he cannot ruin the Nature Strip party once again? He’ll have a camp on the Champion sprinter throughout and with a 5kg weight advantage on The Strip once again, it shapes up as a two-horse affair. He has two wins to his name down the Flemington straight and if there is any chink in the Nature Strip armour, then it will be Giga Kick who takes advantage.

Roch ‘N’ Horse is a genuine Flemington specialist and will be looking to put in a repeat performance of his Newmarket Handicap success where he saluted at a big price. Bella Nipotina deadset smashed her rivals in the Manikato when putting close to five-lengths on her rivals at Moonee Valley and can only be respected based on recent performances.

There is class everywhere you look in the field of 11 accepted for the Group 1 Champions Mile at Flemington on Saturday afternoon. Nine of the 11 runners have earned connections over $1 million in prizemoney, and with $3 million on offer on Saturday, it looks set to be a must-watch event.

Having taken out the Nature Strip Stakes on October 29, Private Eye ($3.50) has opened favourite with online betting sites, while last-start Crystal Mile winner My Oberon ($5) looks to be his biggest danger. Cascadian ($6), Alligator Blood ($6.50) and Mr Brightside ($10) are all given a chance in what looks to be an open Group 1 race.

The speed influence in the race looks to be obvious, with Alligator Blood expected to make this a genuinely run mile. Look for Tuvalu, Kolding and Mr Brightside to all be within the first half a dozen upon settling. Cascadian and My Oberon will most likely settle at the rear of the field and be the ones having the last crack at the leaders.

Cascadian has been nothing short of impressive so far this campaign and looks to be a great play at a nice price in the Champions Mile. The James Cummings-trained veteran was a class above in his last two starts in Sydney in weaker company than this, but visually has been dominant. He is sure to appreciate the tempo that Alligator Blood will set and under a well-timed sprint under James McDonald, the old marvel certainly has the form and the turn of foot to finish over the top of his rivals and bring up a third Group 1 win.

Private Eye has been one of the surprise packets of the spring and his win in the Nature Strip Stakes last week has him as a deserving favourite in this. He won at 1200m in the Gilgai Stakes, finished a half-length off Giga Kick in The Everest and smashed his rivals last time out to suggest he is in career best form. He gets back out to his pet distance of the mile and is set to appreciate the improving surface he gains on Saturday. He will be at the rear of the field close to some of his main rivals and with a sharp turn of foot, there is no reason why he cannot bring up a third win from four starts this campaign.

Mr Brightside is another who will appreciate getting to the mile again having won seven times from 10 attempts and wasn’t beaten far in this race last year. Whilst the win of My Oberon in the Crystal Mile has him as a deserving second elect in markets and just needs to replicate that effort to go close in this.

On form, there is about six or seven genuine chances in the Champions Mile, but we are happy to side with Cascadian in the Group 1.
