1st race – (4) Desert Wolf (D) was bet down from 9-5 to 7-5 and took a step backwards in the slop. Can rebound here. (3) Sense You Asked could be a threat in his debut. (5) Shopper’s Revenge is another interesting firster. (8) Determinedly was a distant second at the wire but could be closer today. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-8. Doubles: 3-4-5-8 with 3-4-5-7. Pick 3: 3-4-5-8 with 3-4-5-7 with 1-2-6-8.
2nd race – (7) Comparative was third in her two starts but adds blinkers here and that may put her over the top. (5) Towhead was a game second last time and should be the main rival here. The Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes is not only a good race to watch and to wager upon, but it can give us a few contenders on the Road to the Kentucky Derby to keep an eye on for next year. Davis Stakes and Tampa Bay Derby and ended up 11^th in the Kentucky Derby, while last year’s third place Jockey Club Stakes finisher White Abarrio won both the Holy Bull Stakes as well as the Florida Derby before finishing 16^th in this year’s Run for the Roses.
Win contenders:
Red Route One (5) made his career debut running two-turns on grass this past summer at Saratoga, which is no easy question to answer for a young colt. After a fifth place finish in that debut, Red Route One improved markedly to win by almost four lengths in September, also on turf. Moving to dirt for the first time in the Breeders’ Futurity one month later, the colt broke 11^th in a field of 14 horses and although wide on the far turn, rallied for third while the top two had drawn off by seven lengths. That was a strong field, as winner Forte returned to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, a race Red Route One passed to run in the Street Sense Stakes one month earlier. However, that choice did not help as the track came up sloppy and the colt finished fifth of 10. Still, with his effort in the Futurity resulting in a strong 94 Equibase speed figure (which is tied for the best dirt figure in the field with Instant Coffee), Red Route One might be the horse to beat if he runs back to that effort. This is particularly true as jockey Tyler Gaffalione gets on for the first time and has won 25% of the time he rides for trainer Steve Asmussen over the past couple of years.
Instant Coffee (8) finished on even terms, or very close to it, when fourth in the Breeders’ Futurity just inches behind third place finisher Red Route One. That was his first attempt in a two-turn race following his debut win at seven furlongs at Saratoga one month earlier. Like others in this field, Instant Coffee is on a recognizable pattern of improvement, going from an 89 debut figure to 94 last month. As such, and since the Futurity produced next out Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Forte as well as the runner-up finisher in the Bob Hope Stakes last weekend, this colt should be considered strongly as a contender in this year’s Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.
Freedom Trail (6) sports the best last race effort in this field, moving his record to a perfect two-for-two when winning the Awad Stakes four weeks ago with a 96 figure. That win, as well as his debut win one month earlier, were on turf but the colt does have good breeding to suggest he can transfer his top form to turf. Additionally, trainer John Terranova has won six times in 27 starts the past two years back-to-back, a pretty strong 22% win rate which suggests Freedom Trail can run well again. Given this is only the third start of his career and he improved off an 82 figure in his debut to 96 last out, logical further improvement suggests Freedom Trail has a big shot to win for the third time in three starts.
If you are wondering why I haven’t listed Curly Jack (1) as a win contender, even though he won the Iroquois Stakes in September at Churchill Downs and at the distance of this race, the reason is even if that effort is repeated, it doesn’t appears to be good enough to beat any of the top three. That’s because that effort earned a lowly 83 figure compared to 94 to 96 for the recent best efforts of Red Route One, Freedom Trail and Instant Coffee, and I don’t expect much improvement considering Curly Jack only earned an 88 figure when fifth of 10 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last month at Keeneland.

Win bets:
Looking at the odds of both Red Route One (5) and Instant Coffee (8) any time with about 15 minutes to post or so, I would bet the one at the highest odds to win provided those odds are 5 to 2 or higher.

#6 Photon moves back to the dirt for this race, which is where we has seen her at her best. Going one-mile on the surface should lead to her best performance yet. #3 Summer Takeover debuts in this spot for Abreu, who is solid with first time starters. Jose Ortiz jumps aboard, which is a good sign.

Race 8: Fall Highweight Handicap (G3)

#7 Runningsonofagun goes for two in a row today after a nice Grade 3 over this track in his last start. He was run consistently well against some of the best horses in the crop all season long. #1 Greeley and Ben moves up in class after a solid win over this track in his last start. He has the back class to get the job done today.

Race 9: Red Smith Stakes (G2)

#9 Solider Rising gets some class relief after running well in back to back races at the Grade 1 level on this circuit. This is the perfect spot for him today. #1 Highest Honors has run well against similar runners in his last four races since stretching out in distance. He should run well again today.

Race 10: Maiden Special Weight

#1 Mariachi was a solid second on debut over this track and at this distance. If he moves forward off of that race he is the one to beat in this spot today. #2 Victory Money debuts in this spot for Todd Pletcher, with Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard, which is always a dangerous thing. He has been working fairly well in the mornings leading up to this start.

RACE 4: LUNI SIMA (#1)

Up to the Mark (#4) figures to go favored here as he turns back to a sprint distance after Pletcher had tried to gradually stretch him out. He obviously possesses plenty of talent, as he showed in his first couple of one-turn starts this summer. However, he just wanted no part of 9 furlongs last time, and he also didn’t get the right trip, as he was rated farther off the pace than he had been in any of his prior starts. Perhaps it’s as simple as getting back to basics with this horse, but I’m hesitant to trust this horse at a short price – and he will be pretty short with Irad Ortiz named to ride. Pletcher is an uninspiring 29 for 156 (19%, $1.32 ROI) with 3YO+ non-maidens going from routes to sprints on dirt over 5 years. The two most obvious alternatives are Life Changer (#2) and Reggae Music Man (#3), who faced off in a race at this level earlier this month. I wasn’t particularly impressed with either one’s performance, though I would give slight preference to Life Changer given his positive experience at 7 furlongs. My top pick is a runner exiting a different race at this level. Luni Sima (#1) was facing a tougher field last time when he finished behind the promising Winit going a mile. I didn’t think he got the best trip that day, as he was shuffled back on the far turn and his apprentice rider seemed to have some trouble finding a clear path for his mount until the race had gotten away from them. He was beaten by Life Changer three back at this distance, but it seems that he’s improved a bit since then and now he’s getting a rider upgrade to Javier Castellano.

RACE 5: DANDY HANDYMAN (#7)

General Jim (#10) figures to vie for favoritism in this race as he seeks to stay undefeated on turf in his third attempt on this surface. He was a workmanlike maiden winner at Saratoga two back before impressively winning an allowance race last time at Keeneland. That was a slightly weaker spot than this one, and he also worked out an absolutely perfect trip, saving ground on the turns before tipping out into the clear at the head of the lane. Now he’s stuck in the far outside post position with a pretty quick run to the clubhouse turn. He has the talent to win here, but I wanted to look elsewhere at a short price. Another runner who I wanted to avoid is Bat Flip (#2). He won a fairly strong maiden event last month, but he is another who got a great trip in victory. He was setting a moderate pace while riding an advantageous rail path in a race where those racing outside were compromised. I instead want to focus on a couple of runners coming out of the Awad Stakes. Let’s Go Big Blue (#9) is the one who had the obvious trip in that race, as his rider Eric Cancel didn’t do the best job of putting him in the right spots. He was wide every step of the way, and Cancel was unable to secure a clear path for him at the top of the stretch. Another rival was blamed for fouling him by the stewards, but this horse caused a lot of his own problems before finishing up with good interest late. He has the ability to win a race like this, and perhaps the addition of blinkers will help him focus. My top pick is Dandy Handyman (#7), who finished second in the Awad. While he stayed clear of all that trouble, he did have a hand in producing problems for those in behind him as he drifted out through the stretch. That said, he had done plenty of hard work prior to that, setting a fast pace that set it up for the closers. The TimeformUS Pace Figures for the early fractions are color-coded in red and the race was dominated by closers, with the exception of this gelding. I like the versatility that he’s displayed in his first couple of starts and he figures to be a better price than the aforementioned runners.

RACE 9: DYNADRIVE (#11)

Likely favorite Soldier Rising (#9) just missed in this race last year when he was a 3-year-old facing older rivals. He arguably got left with a bit too much ground to make up, as he came with a late rush for third despite being well behind with a quarter mile to go. Since returning this year, it took him a few starts to reach his peak at the start of the season, but he has run well twice in a row against Grade 1 company in recent starts. He closed well two back in the Sword Dancer, and then last time was unlucky in the Turf Classic, as he got buried in traffic in deep stretch. He finished just behind today’s rival Astronaut (#4), but Soldier Rising surely ran the better race, all things considered. He’s the horse to beat. Chad Brown has entered a couple of runners. Highest Honors (#1) finished ahead of stablemate Balthus (#3) in the Sycamore last time at Keeneland, but I much prefer the latter runner. Highest Honors drew a wide post position last time, but he actually got a great trip, as Tyler Gaffalione guided him over to the rail and he just followed the winner. Balthus had a more difficult trip, as he was never inside and encountered traffic when set down for his best in deep stretch. He appeared to finish with something left in the tank and still has upside. I’m going in a different direction with Dynadrive (#11) at what figures to be a better price. It looked like his career was heading down the wrong path earlier this year, but he completely turned things around off the trainer switch to Tom Morley this summer. He worked out great trips in his first two starts for the barn, but he also showed up with some of the best efforts of his career, culminating with a win in the Lure. He’s been off the board twice since then, but has had excuses. He didn’t like give in the ground two back in a race dominated by a front-running winner. Then last time he never had a chance, going wide against a rail bias while also compromised by a slow pace. He has to prove he can handle this marathon distance, but he figures to fly under the radar and fits here with his best effort.

2022 Seabiscuit Handicap Cheatsheet

1. SANTIN (3-1) – Mastered Churchill Downs‘ new turf course better than most this year by scoring G1 wins in May and August, though hasn’t delivered at all at other times recently; showed little after a slow start at Keeneland last time, but returns to a course over which he was a strong second in the Hollywood Derby (G1) last fall; the primary concern is that, despite a couple overnight wins going a mile, he might find this trip a bit shorter than what he prefers these days.

2. MASTEROFFOXHOUNDS (12-1) – Got away with a soft, unpressured pace going 10 panels in the John Henry Turf Championship (G2) last time, but was well held against several of these rivals earlier this year on multiple occasions; more effective over longer distances than this, but the apparent class differential is the main knock against.

3. HONG KONG HARRY (7-2) – The leading candidate of the three D’Amatos enters fresh having last seen action in the Del Mar Mile (G2) Sept 3., in which he rallied from 13 lengths down to win going away by more than two lengths; won the American (G3) over the summer, too, and had a legit excuse when a rough-trip second in the Eddie Read (G2) in between; can get an honest pace if the two to his immediate right both go; plenty to offer.

4. SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT (4-1) – Although swallowed up late after setting a pressured pace in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), no doubting this one’s top-level credentials on this circuit; the obvious downside is that he’s seemingly forgot how to win over the past year and a half, settling for numerous minor awards in what has to be a frustrating development for connections; figures to be around or thereabouts at the finish, but expected short price would be tough to take after a long stretch of falling short.

5. BEYOND BRILLIANT (4-1) – Last year’s Hollywood Derby winner seemingly a need-the-lead type, and he didn’t get that advantage in the Breeders’ Cup Mile; situation might be different now that he’s on more familiar and preferred ground, but again might have to tussle with Smooth Like Strait for early supremacy; however, if he can avoid the pressure, he could turn this into a repeat of the Charles Whittingham (G2) or City of Hope Mile (G2).

6. LINCOLN HAWK (20-1) – While generally hard to dismiss a D’Amato trainee in a spot like this, especially after a solid prep race, this four-year-old has had limited experience facing this kind and prior form against graded foes doesn’t stand out; winless in four prior starts over this lawn, too; relatively fresh, but can’t endorse for more than a small slice.

7. IRIDEO (10-1) – Runner-up to Hong Kong Harry in the Del Mar Mile two back, but again didn’t quite settle as well he could have in the City of Hope Mile; much closer to the pace than he had been at Del Mar, his late kick was blunted and he failed to muster a rally; perhaps a better effort possible if he can deliver one big run late, but overall seems a cut below from a class perspective.

8. SET PIECE (5-1) – Not quite as consistent a contender this season as last, his only wins coming against softer at Pimlico; a good try last out in the Coolmore Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland despite falling well behind, and the foes that beat him to the wire are all legitimate G1 types; the pace should be honest here, so it’s just a matter of whether he can get involved sooner and his late kick is good enough.

9. KENTUCKY GHOST (20-1) – Looks a cut or two below these from a class perspective; his only stakes win came in the Cliff Hanger, a Listed event, at Monmouth over the summer, and previous forays into graded company this season leave something to be desired; has also done some of his best work of late with Lasix, and goes without that here.

Top Pick: 3-Hong Kong Harry (7/2)

Has been freshened since his convincing victory over the local lawn in the Del Mar Mile S.-G2 in early September and should be set for a similar effort in this year’s renewal of the Seabiscuit H.-G2. The Irish import has rising numbers, a strong recent work tab, a comfortable inside draw, and retains Flavien Prat, who is a perfect two-for-two aboard the Phil D’Amato-trained five-year-old. A winner of eight races from 12 career stars, this thoroughly genuine and consistent gelding is listed at 7/2 on the morning line and offers plenty of value at that price if you can get it.

Top Pick: 5-Aligato (7/2)

Wasn’t knocked about when finishing a willing fourth (beaten two lengths) in the California Flag Stakes for California-bred turf sprinters last month at Santa Anita in his first start since January and seems certain to produce a forward move with that sharpener under his best coupled with this return to the conditioned allowance ranks. The Mark Glatt barn has strong stats (20%) with the second-off-the-layoff angle, and with the stretch out in trip the son of Kitten’s Joy should be set for a major effort. A healthy series of workouts at San Luis Rey Downs since raced is a further plus, so at 7/2 on the morning line he offers excellent value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.
