Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    February 14, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park has a 15-race program ready for this evening. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

3-Etbauer (5/2)-Beaten chalk broke 4th leaving from the 2nd tier and Merriman hit the go button early and brushed to the top. That move took some starch out of the 4-year-old but finished a clear 2nd best. Looking for a more efficient trip this time.
6-Jovian (20-1)-Price shot can compete versus this kind but needs a live cover flow and a quick pace. If the one below leaves the fractions should be lively and Davis Jr could close fastest of all.
7-Moscow Mitch (5/2)-The post helps the price and has the gate speed to land on the point or in the 2-hole behind #3. Has hit the board in 12 of 15 at Nfld with 5 pictures and is in sharp form.

    Race 12

2-FG's Mondo Packrat (5-1)-Got parked from the 8-hole in last at 91-1 and has missed a start. Gets a positive driver change in Myers, has the speed to beat these and now draws inside. Hoping for a good steer and for the public to overlook.
3-Lexington Avenue (20-1)-This longshot has been out racing his odds and won at this level 2 back at 38-1. Looking to fade the 8/5 morning line chalk who starts from post 9 in his 2nd start since June.

    Race 13

4-Remembering Shorty (8-1)-Camera shy 6-year-old has developed a winning touch in 2023 capturing 2 of the last 4 starts. This will be the 2nd straight steer for Myers, will look for a better trip and to be in striking range at the top of the lane.
6-Leonardo Hanover (7-1)-Gets needed post relief and has the gate speed to be on the lead or in the pocket off the gate. Does better when forwardly placed and should be a square price.

    Race 14

2-Devil Or Angel (2-1)-Looking at some droppers in this leg that could battle. Merriman takes over, so there won't be much value to be found but should be racing near the lead.
3-Step On The Gas (5/2)-Didn't show much in a needed start when dropped to this level on 2-5. Missed a couple of starts before that race and now gets a ++ driver change in Wrenn. Should perform well with this kind and could be sitting on a big try.
6-Medoland Brutus (9/2)-Comes off an improved effort versus better. Davis Jr grabs the lines and that could help. Doesn't have big gate speed but should be in the mix at the wire with this group. Needs a sharp steer and honest fractions, and the two above could help provide a quick pace.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    3,6,7/2,3/4,6/2,3,6
    Total Bet=$36

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #1
      Picks Notes
#3 Adriana Es Bonita Forward player has been racing at higher levels than this, and she'll try the locals for the first time at this basement level. Wouldn't be a shock to see her handle this group.
#4 Iron Bertie She's the proven form here at the level with a couple of decent recent tries over the local footing, and she might get the right kind of trip to get the jump on some deeper finishers.
#1 Marimba Wouldn't want too short a price here after that last one, and she has had 17 chances already without finding the exacta once. This is not a deep spot, so she wouldn't be a real surprise, but I think the top pair are more likely.
Race Summary Adriana Es Bonita has enough speed to find a good spot up close early on here, maybe even on the engine, and she's worth a look while facing the local crew at this level for the first time.

      Mahoning Valley - Race #5
      Picks Notes
#8 Forest Selection He's back off the bench after racing for twice this price on the turf at Woodbine, and he's probably a good fit with the locals while bringing some tactical pace with him. Big threat if he handles the surface.
#7 Paper Flowers He's capable of something better than that last one, and he might be in the right spot to try to grind out a win at a mid-range price. Best stuff is plenty competitive here, and he'll be on the tickets.
#4 Copper Harbor He has had 13 chances and has been a fairly reliable, if one-paced, player. Think he'd need a misfire or two if he's going to land this, but his baseline run keeps in the mix for a slice.
Race Summary Forest Selection was up the track in her most recent try at Woodbine on the turf, but she went straight to the bench after that and now returns in a cheap spot with a style that suits the flow.

      Mahoning Valley - Race #8
      Picks Notes
#4 Raceday Attire She'll make her local debut after a modest effort when last seen in December in Chicago, and she should be in line for a great trip while spying the speed here. Interesting.
#1 Years Ago She has proven a good fit since showing up with the locals late last year, and she has a little versatility that might help her work out a trip from the fence.
#12 Awesomely Shy Her form is a bit all over the place, but she has faced some deeper groups than she's going to find here, and something like her last keeps her in the picture throughout.
Race Summary Raceday Attire has a bit of mid-range price appeal while trying to bounce back today off a flat effort last time out. She still has some class questions to answer about the allowance level overall, as her form has been in cheaper claiming spots, but I think her better running lines stack up well with the locals.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Turf Paradise - Race #1
        Picks Notes
#6 HIGH GUNNER (5-2) Wide trip, loomed boldly in stretch, out-kicked in return.
#7 ASK THE KING (5-1) Rallied 4-wide on turn at 5F, ran second, takes another class hike.
#2 KNIGHT EYES (9-2) Breaks outside of rival that she dueled with in solid debut.
Race Summary HIGH GUNNER was bet down to favoritism off a year layoff, stalked a spirited front-end battle in the 4-path and had dead aim on victory. She finished second but projects a similar trip with an extra half-furlong to cover. Bet to win and place.

        Turf Paradise - Race #6
        Picks Notes
#4 RIVIERA CHAMP (10-1) Can be excused for comeback try, fits on best, price attached.
#5 FABSTRACTION (4-1) Shook duel, held off closers in win two back, runs for cheapest tag yet.
#2 FLYUNDERTHEGRAYDAR (9-5) Blew stretch leads in 3 of last 5 starts at this level.
Race Summary Taking a longshot stab on RIVIERA CHAMP, whose last 6F try in September was good enough to win this race. He dueled with winner Turn the Switch – a recent $7,500/nw4 runner-up -- to the top of the stretch and finished second. Bet to win and place and play 4-2 and 4-5 exactas.

        Turf Paradise - Race #8
        Picks Notes
#6 MY SWEET LORD (5-2) Roughed up, raced wide, rallied into slow pace in latest, today’s Best Bet.
#1 CHARLIE’S MAN (10-1) Tries turf route after series of dirt sprints with ‘some late run.’
#7 ANOTHERFORBROOKS (5-1) Rallied for second on dirt; dam was a two-time turf allowance winner.
Race Summary MY SWEET LORD, bumped and forced wide by the favorite into the first turn, was carried out again while launching a 5-wide bid into the stretch. He was hard-ridden throughout but still managed to finish second. In his most recent start on turf, he ran second to My Man Biggie, who came back to finish second in a $50,000 optional claiming race. Bet to win and place and play a 1-6-7 exacta box.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #1 - Post: 12:35pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 50

              Rating:

              #1 MARIMBA (ML=5/2)

MARIMBA - Horse's last race was at Mahoning Valley Race Cour in a race with a class figure of 55. Dropping a significant amount in class rating today puts her in a solid position in this field. Mare's finish positions keep getting better with each race. Maybe today's the day. Bernardini brings her right back. I recommend you stick with this live mare. This mare earned a nice speed fig of 44 in her last event. That speed fig should be strong enough to score this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 IRON BERTIE (ML=2/1), #3 ADRIANA ES BONITA (ML=3/1), #2 STRAIGHT TO GO (ML=4/1),

IRON BERTIE - Didn't make up ground at any point on January 30th. Hard to wager on in today's event at the expected odds. Will be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class figure, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list. ADRIANA ES BONITA - 3/1 is not offering enough value for any thoroughbred in a sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a short distance affair of late. STRAIGHT TO GO - Just cannot bet on this steed. Didn't show me anything positive last time around the track or on Nov 9th. I find it hard to wager on this less than sharp equine today. Make her show you something in a short distance event before you play her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. The speed rating last out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class figure of today's contest. Mark this horse as a likely underlay.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - MARIMBA - My take on the data says it usually takes a pony one - Two races after a layoff to get back into proper shape. That's just what we have here, so I expect a solid race for this horse.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 MARIMBA to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE AUGUST 14, 2022 OR WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES

                # 6 MY BOY LOLLIPOP 10/1
                # 1 STRAUS'S PLACE 8/1
FLY BUDDY FLY is my selection and the potential return justifies the hazardous nature of the long odds. The handler wheels this entrant back in next to no time to race again. MY BOY LOLLIPOP - Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good handicapping angle. This one ranks at the top in this field of horses. Sanderson is serious with this one, wheeling him back in next to no time. STRAUS'S PLACE - Love when any horse makes a quick turnaround. Put up a very strong speed figure last time out.

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JANUARY 14 ALLOWED 2 LBS.

                  # 11 PURDY PUMKIN 12/1
                  # 1 YEARS AGO 3/1
                  # 6 SKY 20/1
My choice for this event is PURDY PUMKIN especially at 12/1. Recently Dacosta has provided bettors with a quite good winning percentage with horses running in dirt sprint races. Could beat this field given the 78 Equibase Speed Figure put up in her last outing. With one of the most competitive jockeys in terms of returns at the window, don't count this filly out. YEARS AGO - Could best this group based on the speed rating - 80 - of her last effort. Is worth considering and may be a wager - strong Speed Figures (65 average) at today's distance and surface recently.

                    Rating:

                    #10 BACK TO BUSINESS (ML=3/1)

BACK TO BUSINESS - Great chance for this horse. Solid late speed and should have good position. The jock and handler combination have a lucrative ROI when they partner up.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SHAMAN'S PRODIGY (ML=7/2), #8 TOP REFERENCES (ML=4/1), #4 FEARLESS FACTOR (ML=5/1),

SHAMAN'S PRODIGY - This filly is always in the money, but just doesn't finish on top. Hard to play her on the win end. TOP REFERENCES - 4/1 odds isn't enough for this thoroughbred when examining the most recent outings. FEARLESS FACTOR - This questionable contender didn't do much for me last time finishing seventh. No reason to expect any improvement in today's race.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - BACK TO BUSINESS - I scan the TrackMaster Platinum PPs for this type of horse. Has the top Power Rating by at least 5 points.

Racing heads to Hawkesbury on Tuesday afternoon for a very competitive eight-race program from 1:15pm. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit and the track is currently listed as a Good 4; however, with a likely downpour on race-day, we’re doing the form for a Soft 5.
                            Best Bet: Sports Legend

Sports Legend looks extremely hard to beat in the second race of the Hawkesbury program and we’re happy to launch into our best bet on Tuesday. Trainer Les Bridge has given this gelding out of Deep Field a lengthy break away from racing with a 181-day spell; however looks ready to break his maiden status first-up in this 1100m maiden contest. His form in his first preparation reads really well too, with solid efforts behind Buenos Noches and Northern Beaches back in August. He’s had two trials in the lead up to this first-up assignment and he won both when leading throughout and asked for only minor efforts in both to score. Kerrin McEvoy took the reins in both trial wins and elects to hop aboard Sports Legend on Tuesday and we think he’ll jump, lead, and be mighty hard to chase down.

                            Next Best: Stanislaus

We jump back to the opener to find our next best of the afternoon with Stanislaus a cracking bet to kick-off proceedings at Hawkesbury. It’s a really nice maiden for the two-year-olds to be fair; however, we’re siding with a galloper with proper race experience to go along with eye-catching barrier trials. You only must look at his debut performance behind his stablemate and Blue Diamond Stakes hopeful Barber to see why he’s a massive chance in this company. He finished 2.7 lengths off the eventual winner, but covered significant ground throughout, before holding on strongly. He had two hit outs at the barriers trials to ensure he’s ready here and team Godolphin are flying at the moment with their two-year-olds, so expect a very bold showing. Joshua Parr takes the ride on this son of Exceed And Excel and from the wide draw should be somewhere mid-field trying to find cover throughout. If he does, he’s the one to beat.

                            Best Value: Sundida

We tipped Sundida as our best value runner in her first-up effort at Gosford on February 2 and wanted to follow her wherever she went next. It just so happens to be in a 1400m race that looks open enough for this daughter of Fighting Sun to get the chocolates. We thought the debut effort showed plenty of ability when rattling home into third behind Surreal Lily at a massive each-way quote. There was zero tempo in that race for her to sprint off and in hindsight the 1200m was going to be a question mark regardless with just one barrier trials under her belt. She now has race experience and have more of a guide of what to expect from this filly. Joseph Ible trains this three-year-old and will likely give instructions for Louise Day to get back and find cover again; however this time Sundida should be able to round up her rivals if they can sit within striking distance. We’re getting an each-way price with online Bookmakers again to find out, and we’re happy to oblige.
