Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

    March 4, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia

Tonight, the Meadowlands has a competitive 14-race card. The feature goes in Race 10, an Open 1-2 Handicap Pace with a $45,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6

2-Ahundreddollarbill (2-1)-Finished a close 3rd versus this kind in the 1st start off the bench and can be better tonight. TMac gets the assignment behind this classy Alagna pupil once again. Should be tighter and forwardly placed off gate.

    Race 7

3-Truffle Dog (5-1)-Comes off a rough trip at this class and comes back in sequence with Dunn returning. Speedy Cullipher trainee only has 4 wins in 31 M1 starts but may have met a beatable field. Can win at a square price and should be racing with the leaders.
4-Duddie's Lor (3-1)-Has been in good form just missing in the last 2 starts at this level. Has trouble sealing the deal and will likely offer no value. But has won 9 times in 40 Big M starts and will respect chances with this post draw but look to others as well.
10-Action Hanover (7/2)-Competitive in the TM races and gets into the mix despite starting outside. Should offer a fair price and must be considered in a race without a standout.

    Race 8

3-As Always (5-1)-Drops after a no-move mile from post 10 and lands at the same level of a nice win at 11-1 on February 11. Loses Dave Miller to #1 but Joe B can work a nice trip and be in striking range at the top of the lane.
5-Adriano Hanover (9/2)-Drops and has been consistently in the hunt versus this kind. Bartlett has the gate speed to use to get a good early seat and should be rolling off cover down the lane.
7-Ohoka Chopper N (7/2)-Was bet some against better in last but caught a shuffle and finished a close 8th. Has been in good form, could rebound on the drop and hoping is overlooked at the windows.

    Race 9

2-Shadow Cat (8-1)-Yonkers shipper knows how to bank money and made the most of his initial M1 start. Now steps-up and faces better. Should be a test but has beaten tougher albeit at YR and could add some juice to the Pick 4 payout.
3-Bettor Memories (3-1)-Was used 2 times before the 3/8's and didn't get a breather. The trip took a toll and faded down the lane. Beaten chalk was driven aggressively by Gingras and maybe this time Joe B comes off a helmet. That could work better versus this kind.
4-My Pal Joe (7/2)-Comes off a strong effort versus similar from the 10-hole in last and was parked the mile. Should be bet and the trip can't get much worse. Won't be 19-1 tonight but looks like a player and does good work at M1 (42-7-6-6).
6-Shine A Light (6-1)-Takes a good step-up but best to not overlook the Engblom/Bartlett combo after the sharp win last time. That score came from post 9 and it was only the 2nd start off the bench. This was Bartlett's choice over the 2/9.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    2/3,4,10/3,5,7/2,3,4,6
    Total Bet=$18

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Fair Grounds - Race #6
      Picks Notes
#4 Highland Creek Probably a fool's errand to play against the reliable chalk in this one, but this guy won his only career turf start here. Maybe the surface switch gives him a small chance to turn the tables on the choice.
#6 Who Took the Money He's really reliable and just handled some of these, and he probably gets another okay setup to come rolling late. Odds-on choice can hit hard again.
#1 Smarty Alex He's a pretty solid finisher who has done good work here this season while stepping up to face some tougher groups, and he was second-best behind 'Money when they faced off here in January.
Race Summary Highland Creek is in hit or miss form, but he should be able to get the jump on the favorite turning for home, and he is still a bit of a question mark on the turf -- upside?

      Fair Grounds - Race #7
      Picks Notes
#5 Presider He was running a bit evenly late in that last one, but I think something like that try would keep him in the mix right back with these. Dangerous today.
#3 Rule Breaker Not much to argue about here with the big pedigree for a top barn, and once you get past the top choice, there might not be a whole lot in here.
#6 Gatlinburg He debuts going long here for a capable team, and I'm not sure this is the deepest spot for the local level -- so get a good look at him on the track and tote, but he could be live.
Race Summary Presider has some appeal in this one off an effort that stacks up nicely with this group despite being a little flat late. Think that was a pretty good race, and that gives him the edge with these.

      Fair Grounds - Race #8
      Picks Notes
#6 Lord Donegal He still has some upside with just the two lifetime starts to his name, and he should be able to find another really good spot spying the pace. Respect on the hike.
#5 Andthewinneris He has a bit of turf class to him compared to most in here, but he'll have to hold off some runners with decent potential upside. Baseline effort is formidble here.
#2 Tapio Interesting enough that this is where he reappears after the nice five-furlong debut win on the main track at Delaware, and the guess is this is where they really think his home will be.
Race Summary Lord Donegal didn't run big numbers in Indiana, but he has the right style for this race flow and might be a better horse now than he was last fall when making those first two starts.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Laurel Park - Race #3
        Picks Notes
#1 SHERIFF RONNIE (4-1) Steadied ‘while pulling his way forward’ as beaten debut favorite.
#7 COLLECT REDEMPTION (8-5) Changed tactics on drop from MSW ranks, dueled long way, ran third.
#6 INSPIRED IRISH (4-1) Finished behind ‘Collect’ as gelding, gets 11-pound weight shift in his favor.
Race Summary SHERIFF RONNIE, a troubled third in a heavily-bet debut at this level, showed some late interest in a faster-paced follow-up against better. He has shown enough in the morning to lay closer to the pace from the rail. Bet to win and place.

        Laurel Park - Race #4
        Picks Notes
#5 HOT N SPICY LOVE (7-5) Had good set-up in win off claim, but hard to look past in same spot.
#6 EKATI’S VERVE (9-2) Rallied inside top one on turn, found stretch seam, erratic while drifting late.
#1 SEANOW (5-2) Has speed and the rail on class drop, knows how to win, first try at this distance.
Race Summary HOT N SPICY LOVE tracked a ‘sharp’ pace, swung wide late on the final turn and won going away for his 16th victory. The classy 8-year-old should move a step closer to $300,000 in earnings in a repeat try for his new barn. Play 5-1 and 5-6 exactas.

        Laurel Park - Race #6
        Picks Notes
#5 ROMINSKI (9-2) Projects ideal trip for new barn, gets in light, good value play.
#6 BIGMANCAN (3-1) Patiently handled, rallied past top one in shorter sprint.
#1 ARISTOCRATIC (6-1) First or second in 13 of 26 starts at Laurel, doesn’t back down from a fight.
Race Summary ROMINSKI advanced steadily off a contested pace but was out-kicked by BIGMANCAN for the win at 5-1/2F. He sheds 9 pounds and can turn the tables in his second start this year with a trouble-free start. Bet to win and place.
