Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 18, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card with the 0.50 Pick 5 starting in Race 5 and the sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below will be based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

1-Captivate Hanover (5/2)-Steps-up but has won 2 of the last 3 and might handle the promotion. Has the gate speed to get on the engine and could be tough to collar if Dube steals a quarter.
2-Sonny Weaver N (6-1)-Finished a nice 2nd from post 7 against this kind on 9-4. Does good work at Yonkers winning 9 of 20, and Buter should be able to work a very cozy trip.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

4-Rocknroll Runa A (9/2)-Holland will steer the Stalbaum trainee and his driving style should fit this veteran. Finished 2nd to the one below and should be in the hunt again. Needs a quick pace, and my thinking is that can happen.
6-American Mercury (3-1)-Has won 7 of 8 since joining the Jen & Joe barn in early July. Has been climbing the class ladder and got up in time to win the last start at this class. Could be on the lead or in the pocket and extending the 2-race win streak is a distinct possibility.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Euphoria N (6-1)-This veteran is a check-getter and has finished 2nd in 5 of the last 6 races. Can be a trip-out candidate, could land in the 2-hole behind the one below and might be overlooked at the windows.
4-I Did It My Way (5/2)-Beaten odds-on chalk got on the engine versus better on 9-7 and sizzled to the half in 53.2. That plan ended with a 7th place finish. Buter gets the assignment, has the gate speed to land on the point and will look for a more reasonable trip.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

2-Flow With Joe (9/2)-This will be the 2nd start for the Laterza barn after a claim. Got on the engine and almost wired the field last time, did fade to finish 3rd. That was an aggressive try and getting on the point wasn't the typical course of action. Could be better here and should offer a square price.
3-Decoy (5-1)-This will be the 3rd start after a claim for the Dicostanzo barn. Was taken for $30k and found the $40k claimers too tough. Now back in versus $30k claimers and had won 2 straight at that level. Joe B takes the lines, he should be aggressive and could be sitting on a big try.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,2/4,6/2,4/2,3
    Total Bet=$16

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#6 Cantstealmythunder Interested to see how much of the 20/1 ML price he'll offer with some appealing upside and a wiseguy sort of look that I'd eagerly join today. His form is really progressive, and he has shown a little versatility in running style and plenty of talent. Think he can prove he fits.
#3 Wolfie's Dynaghost He's the clear one to beat on form with several graded tries on his page and a big win in the Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway earlier this year on synthetic footing. Probably supposed to be tough.
#2 Carrothers I do think you can make a case for almost any of them finding their way into the trifecta, but he's another with a little bit of recent class to him that makes him a good fit if he can hold form from the last.
Race Summary Love this meet and love their big day with the Mile and Masters on the program today. Cantstealmythunder steps up as a new, lightly raced, face. His form has hinted that there may still be more in the tank.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#12 Loyalty Think she gets the right trip from out here while tracking the speed, and her ability to relax should serve her well with a handful of potential pace players lined up inside. Expecting her to hit hard today.
#7 Roses for Debra Think it's a top-heavy race between these two today, as they both have similar ability to settle just in behind the pace and move when asked. She's an easy filly to root for.
#9 Opening Buzz Would want her on a couple backup plays with finishing form that could serve her well if the pace heats up and draws the spying players, including the top two choices, in too early. Move back to the synthetic might help her fire fresh.
Race Summary Loyalty and Roses for Debra both have super solid running lines and figure to land similar trips, but the former might offer a touch better price and might use her wider draw to track the chalk the whole way.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#2 Van Taking a bit of a price swing with this guy who has only been turning in modest finishing efforts, but he hasn't been too far off a couple of recent winners and should offer a nice number after finishing behind some of these lately.
#5 Saketumi His form can be a bit all over the place, but the better tries fit really well here at what should be a playable price. I wouldn't be against taking a shot and trying to get through this with just these top two.
#7 Starship Empire He's got pretty reliable local form and has enough versatility to give his rider a couple options out of the gate. The running lines say he fits, but I wouldn't want to land here at too short a price.
Race Summary Van and Saketumi might both offer midrange prices, and I don't think either of them are as far off the main characters here as their prices might suggest.
      Golden Gate - Race #6
#3 Classy City He has a couple of decent tries under his belt already, but he hasn't quite found the final gear to punch home. Wondering if he might like the new footing here.
#4 Haywood No doubt he's the one to beat, but he has already landed three underneath shares from as many starts, so it's easy to get the feeling that he can be tough here, but that he also might find another one to beat him.
#1 Melanie's Tiger He was along late in the debut for a piece, and he could come alive a bit better with that race under his belt as he gets on synthetic footing. Wouldn't shock.
Race Summary Classy City might be the right one to handle the likely chalk Haywood, as he has shown some speed and might appreciate a more modest race shape today.
      Golden Gate - Race #8
#7 Kerry Gold He has had more than his share of chances, but I think he might be a bit better at this kind of trip than he showed here in June, and he figures to at least show up with another honest effort. Wouldn't shock.
#8 Defensor Fortis His form is heading in the wrong direction since a decent debut run at Santa Anita, but I think something like his two-back run probably still keeps him in the mix here. That said, not sure what kind of price I'd want to land here, but I doubt we get anything too appealing.
#1 Mogollon Rim He has some decent turf races on his page, and he has some likely upside in this second run off the break. He's another who has an obvious claim on this but might wind up overbet.
Race Summary Kerry Gold gets another chance going two turns on the turf here, and I think he might be in line for a dreamy spying trip. If he can do even just a tiny bit better than his only previous turf run, I think he's in the frame today.
      Golden Gate - Race #9
#2 Fresno Chile Her best career try came here around two turns on the turf, but I get the feeling she's going to like this first local route try. Curious to check her post-time price, but I'd be pretty happy at anything like the 8/1 ML number.
#8 Koko's Mom Very seriously considered her on top in career start number 53 (!), and I think she has a logical place on a lot of tickets here. She's a 5-year-old with $119k in earnings, so maybe it's not my place to criticize as they're getting checks with her, but I don't at all understand the entry and class management of this one. This would be the easiest spot she has seen after trying winners and special weight company in every race on her page.
#4 Prestigious She went evenly when trying the local level for the first time, but she's probably better going long and has some upside while getting around two turns today. Barn wins a lot of races like this here.
Race Summary Fresno Chile has some appeal while trying this trip for the first time, but I'm most curious about seeing reliable, winless warhorse Koko's Mom here. She has landed a bunch of checks through while facing winners and much better special weight company, and I really appreciate that she's as honest as she is with 52 starts under her belt in just 3 1/2 years.

Race 8 - Maiden Claiming - 330y on the Dirt. Purse: $12800 Class Rating: 68

QUARTER HORSE 330Y, FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 5 LOTA BLUE BAYOU 8/5
            # 10 BLAZIN LEGACY 8/1
            # 7 LOTTAPPEAL 8/1
I've got to go with LOTA BLUE BAYOU. Is worth a close look and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (63 average) at today's distance and surface lately. With a very good 71 speed rating last time out, will definitely be a factor in this race. The average class rating alone makes this entrant a contender. BLAZIN LEGACY - Ran a strong last race. The average Equibase class figure of 50 makes this entrant difficult to beat. LOTTAPPEAL - Has put up solid speed figures in short races in the past. Griffin has him trained very well to break promptly out of the gate.

Race 4 - Maiden Claiming - 5.0f on the Turf. Purse: $20000 Class Rating: 72

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $20,000. IF THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF, IT WILL BE RUN AT 5 FURLONGS ON THE MAIN TRACK.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 10 KING OF KENTUCKY 4/1
              # 3 RUFFLED WATERS 7/2
              # 6 FEELINGOODBILLYRAY 20/1
I've got to go with KING OF KENTUCKY. He has posted strong numbers under today's conditions and ought to fare well against this group. With Prescott getting the mount, watch out for this equine. Boasts sound Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses in this race. RUFFLED WATERS - Put up a competitive speed fig last time out. With a reliable 62 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. FEELINGOODBILLYRAY - Must be given a shot given the class of races run recently. The odds should be right on this entrant.

Golden Gate Fields - Race #9 - Post: 5:40pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,500 Class Rating: 79

                Rating:

                #7 ALL HALLOWS (ML=2/1)

ALL HALLOWS - Rider hops back aboard after getting to know the race horse by riding last time out. That's always a positive sign. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Antongeorgi gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. I really like that recent race on Aug 27th at Golden Gate Fields where she ended up second.

PRESTIGIOUS - In the last race this vulnerable equine finished fourth. Doesn't show much potential for her chances this time. If you keep betting these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be disillusioned regularly. Earned a common speed figure in the last race in an $8,000 Maiden Claiming race on August 27th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure. AUTISM SHINE - This runner hasn't been close to the winner at the finish line recently. KOKO'S MOM - This mount likes to finish in the money, but doesn't usually win. Leave out of the top spot.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - ALL HALLOWS - This racer should be your gambling choice today. This filly has posted improving speed figures in her last two affairs.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 ALL HALLOWS is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                  Thistledown - Race #3 - Post: 1:50pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 85

                  Rating:

                  #1 MUGSY MALONE (ML=4/1)

MUGSY MALONE - The most dangerous animal in racing is the lone speed horse. If they let him get away early they probably won't catch him. I have to like this gelding's chances to win at the shorter trip. Possibly a peak effort for this gelding today. Been getting closer at the finish with each recent start.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 RAVEN MOON (ML=5/2), #7 SAMMY'S SMILE (ML=7/2), #6 MASTER OF WAR (ML=5/1),

RAVEN MOON - Finished first in his most recent performance with a mediocre speed fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this bunch. This less than sharp equine hasn't been on the track since August 24th. Not even any morning drills. May bounce off of that last strong effort. SAMMY'S SMILE - Awfully hard to play this runner when he hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness of late. MASTER OF WAR - This sustainer looks to have little chance without a speed duel up front. Notched a pedestrian speed rating last out in an Allowance race on Aug 28th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #1 MUGSY MALONE on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: None

                    Race 8 - Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $10100 Class Rating: 65

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 117 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE IN 2023 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 2 FINGER TIP 30/1
                    # 3 BITS OF LEMON DROP 8/1
                    # 9 ANNAKHOZANA 5/1
FINGER TIP is the strongest wager in this race and could score at a price in here. Will almost certainly go to the lead and should never look back. Gittens and Belle have a good winning percentage together. Trainers don't bring ponies back this quickly for no reason. BITS OF LEMON DROP - Could best this group based on the speed rating - 65 - of her last affair. ANNAKHOZANA - Has run solidly when racing a dirt route race. This filly obviously likes the distance, going 1 for 3 in her races as of late.

UOTTALIKEIT looks to be a competitive contender. Might best this field here, showing very good numbers of late. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this colt. With Barbaran on top him, this colt ought to be able to break out sharply for this event. AUTHENTIC COWTOWN - Has to be given consideration based on the competitive speed figure garnered in the last outing. DUKE OF DARKNESS - Has been running soundly lately and will probably be on the lead early on. Conditioner boasts sharp win figures at this distance and surface.

                            Prairie Meadows - Race #9 - Post: 7:25pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $29,484 Class Rating: 49

                            Rating:

                            #1 JUPITER MISSION (ML=4/1)

JUPITER MISSION - When this rider and conditioner join forces you have to take a look. Roman and Arnett have been great together. Faced tougher last out at Prairie Meadows. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker field, so I will put this horse on my list of contenders.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #4 WICKLOW LADDIE (ML=6/5), #6 DO IT LIKE KEVIN (ML=3/1), #5 GUNPOWDER N' LEAD (ML=5/1),

WICKLOW LADDIE - Improbable that this horse will finish better than he did last time when placing third. This gelding registered a fig in his last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's race. DO IT LIKE KEVIN - The fourth place finish position in the last event was not the best. Tough to invest in any mount in a sprint event at 3/1 when he hasn't shown any competitive efforts in sprints in the last two months. When looking at today's Equibase class figure, he will have to register a better speed figure than last race out to battle in this dirt sprint. GUNPOWDER N' LEAD - In any event of 5 1/2 furlongs, I like to support a contender that has been looking good in sprint affairs recently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 JUPITER MISSION is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                              Vulnerable Contenders: #4 PRESTIGIOUS (ML=7/2), #5 AUTISM SHINE (ML=9/2), #8 KOKO'S MOM (ML=6/1),
