    Re: 8-21-09

    Wunderdog NFL :

Game: Atlanta at St. Louis (Friday 8/21 8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on St. Louis +3 (-120) (risk 3 to win 2.5)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 36 -110

The Rams new head coach Steve Spagnuolo showed a desire to create a winning culture as he won his first NFLX game on the road with a late fourth-quarter TD. The Falcons dropped their opener, allowing 454 yards to the lowly Lions - truly an indication that, coming off a playoffs year, there is more evaluating going on in Atlanta than desire to win. Second-year Coach Mike Smith played things differently a year ago, establishing a winning attitude, covering three of four. How different is the approach this season? Consider the fact that Atlanta allowed three TDs in the entire preseason under then first-year coach Smith, while they allowed three in week one to the Lions. The Rams are in the role under a first year head coach and playing at home, so he will want to show the fans that there is some meaningful football to be played in St. Louis this season. Over the last eight years, they have been premier at home, playing to an 11-5 mark in their home preseason games and I look for the Rams to cover here. I also like the UNDER here as games involving home dogs in certain situations have hit at a 70% UNDER mark including 10-4 UNDER the past three seasons.

Game: Kansas City at Minnesota (Friday 8/21 8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Kansas City +3 (+100) (risk 2 to win 2)

Todd Haley, newly appointed head coach for the Chiefs, will be looking to getting his first win under his belt after dropping the opener to Gary Kubiak's Houston Texans, who are now winning 61.5% of their preseason games under Kubiak. The Vikings made a splash this week (sigh) by signing Brett Favre to a two-year $25 million contract, and the speculation is that they will be cutting Tarvaris Jackson free. That will leave them with a QB dilemma in this one as Favre is not ready to be taking snaps, and even if he does, he will not be very effective. The QB rotation for the Vikings is in trouble in this one. This definitely looks like a good spot for Haley to get win number one, so I'll go with the Chiefs here.

Game: Tennessee at Dallas (Friday 8/21 8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 38 -110

Both of these coaches, Wade Phillips of the Cowboys and Jeff Fisher of the Titans, have shown a penchant for winning in the preseason as they both have winning records with a combined record of 40-30. It is unusual to see teams put up 20 points or more in an NFLX game, but when you look at what Dallas has done under Wade Phillips, there is obviously a different approach. The Cowboys have played 10 preseason home games under Phillips, avareaging 21.2 ppg. The Titans under Fisher have taken a similar approach as the Fisher-led Titans have scored 20+ in eight of their last eleven preseason games. This one has the makings of a 40+ game, and I will go with the over here.

Cleveland is tearing the cover off the ball lately as a team in their last 5 games they have put up 29 runs and has games where they hit .316, 333, .342, and .444 last night off Lackey who had been pitching lights out. In their last 10 games they are hitting .340 off lefties and that is what they get tonight in Lucas French. French has a 5.49 road era. He is also coming off his best effort yet , a 6 inn 0 run performance vs the yanks. Young pitchers tend to struggle after a big performance like that. Look for Seattle which lost a big lead yesterday to come out flat vs the lefty Huff as the tribe get the W tonight

Milwaukee comes to town and faces a surprisingly hot Washington pitcher. The Nationals are 4-1 in the last 5 starts made by 26-year old J.D. Martin, who has a 2.35 ERA his last three starts. He doesn't walk anyone, which is a huge plus in a big park like this. The Brewers may be favored with a 10-game winner on the hill, but Braden Looper has not thrown well, with a 5.03 ERA. The team is 1-4 in his last 5 starts. Play the Nationals

                            Robert Ferringo

1.5-Unit Play. Take Philadelphia (-180) over N.Y. Mets

                            1-Unit Play. Take Philadelphia (-1.5, -115) over N.Y. Mets
The Mets are pathetic right now and the Phillies are the class of the N.L. And if you think that the Phillies are going to take it easy on the Mets because the Mets are so bad then you don’t know about this rivalry. Cole Hamels has had his issues with the Mets. But he shouldn’t tonight.

2.5-Unit Play. Take Houston (-1.5, +105) over Arizona
This is Arizona’s fourth city in six days and this team’s head has to be spinning. They just got their asses kicked by the Phillies and now they have to deal with Roy Oswalt. This is Oswalt’s first home start in a month. And I know it looks like he hasn’t been throwing well but trust me – there are a lot more circumstances that go into it than that. This is when Oswalt excels – second half of the year and at home. The Diamondbacks are 3-12 in Yo Petit’s last 15 starts and 3-8 when he starts on the road. Oswalt is 9-1 in his last 10 starts against Arizona and 6-0 at home against them. He is 60-23 in his last 83 home starts and 41-14 vs. the N.L. West. He has also won seven of eight starts.

2-Unit Play. Take Colorado (-160) over San Francisco

1-Unit Play. Take Colorado (-1.5, +130) over San Francisco
Jonathan Sanchez has a 1-3 record and a 7.45 ERA in his career against the Rockies – with much of that damage having come at Coors Field. This is a huge series for both teams and tonight the Rockies have their ace on the hill while the Giants have their No. 4 starter. Advantage, us. The Giants are just 31-63 on the road against a team that’s above .500 and they are just 2-15 in Sanchez’s last 17 road starts (8-24 in his last 32 starts overall). The Rockies are 10-1 at home against a lefty starter and 23-9 in their last 32 home games. Aaron Cook has won five of his last seven starts against the Giants and I think he’ll be ready to roll. Rockies are 13-7 overall in this series.

1.5-Unit Play. Take St. Louis (-130) over San Diego
The Cardinals just got a look at Clayton Richard and they sent him packing after three innings. Richard will bounce back strong tonight, but it's not going to be enough. Mediocre lefties like this are going to have a really hard time against the Cardinals lineup now that Holiday and Pujols are doing their thing. The Cards have won four straight against southpaws - and five of six on the road - and the Cardinals have won nine straight in this series overall. Killing myself for not being on them yesterday. Let's see if we can't get to the well one more time.

2-Unit Play. Take Chicago White Sox (-1.5, +100) over Baltimore
I’m not quite sure what’s been wrong with Jeremy Guthrie this year but the dude has an ERA of 5.66. That’s not good. He has given up five runs or more in four of his last five starts and this year his road ERA is 6.08. The Orioles are just 20-52 in their last 72 road games and they are just 8-20 in Guthrie’s starts. The White Sox are a really focused team right now and they are just so much better when they play at home. Gavin Floyd is a stunning 24-6 in his last 30 home starts and the White Sox are 17-8 at home overall. Guthrie is a fly ball pitcher against a team that loves to hit home runs. Not a good sign for the O’s.

2-Unit Play. Take L.A. Angels (+110) over Toronto
It’s the Angels against a left-handed starter. Not much more to it than that. The Halos are 36-16 against a southpaw and they are 21-7 on the road against a lefty. In fact, the Angels are 22-7 away from home and 37-14 overall. They have won seven of O’Sullivan’s last eight starts and are facing a team that is in a perfect letdown spot after the hated Yankees left town. Angels have won 7 of 10 in this series and are 5-2 in the last seven games at SkyDome. Backing the better team with plus-money and will chase out on this series if we need to.

                            System (Series) Plays

1-Unit Play. Take Florida (+210) over Atlanta

1-Unit Play. Take Boston (+105) over N.Y. Yankees

1-Unit Play. Take Seattle (+120) over Cleveland
