5 STAR PICK (5-2 on the year):
Baltimore Orioles @ Pittsburgh Pirates - ORIOLES TO WIN (-112)
Tonight the Orioles have their ace Jeremy Guthrie on the mound, who has had struggles getting wins despite pitching well. Guthrie is just 2-8 on the season, but has a 3.56 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Batters are hitting .258 against Guthrie.
The team is 5-9 when he starts, but they just haven't given him much run support on the season. He has not allowed an earned run in 5 of his 14 starts this season, and in his last start he pitched 5 scoreless innings in Toronto, but had to leave with back spasms. I think he has recovered fine from the minor back spasms if the team has him right back in rotation.
On the mound for the Pirates is James McDonald, who is pretty much opposite of Guthrie. McDonald hasn't pitched all too well this season, but is 5-4 on the year. He has a 4.80 ERA and 1.57 WHIP, with batters bitting .279 against him. His last time out he pitched 5.2 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs. McDonald rarely makes it deep into any ball game, going more than six innings just once in 14 starts. In last night's meeting between these two teams the Orioles had 14 hits on their way to a 8-3 victory. Derrek Lee is 11 for 18 over his last four games, and Nick Markakis is 20 for 48 in his last 11 games. The bats seem to be heating up for the Orioles, which can be bad news for James McDonald. The Pirates are averaging just 3.09 runs per game at home this season, and should have a tough time with Guthrie on the mound. Note that the Orioles are 4-0 in their last 4 games as a road favorite and 12-4 in their last 16 games vs NL Central opponents.
The Pirates have lost 4 straight coming into tonight's game and are 7-16 in their last 23 vs AL East opponents. The Pirates are also just 2-6 in their last 8 home games vs a team with a losing record, and 27-62 in their last 89 interleague games. Baltimore has taken 3 of the past 4 meetings between these two teams (last series was in 2008). Guthrie has been pitching well all season, and should be able to take care of this Pirates line up tonight. I expect the Orioles to keep their bats going tonight against McDonald, who seems to struggle with his control. Gladly take the Orioles on the money line tonight as just small favorites here in Pittsburgh.
50 DIME MLB release on the ROCKIES as the road favorite vs. the Indians at Progressive Field. At the time I publish this selection at slightly past 11:30 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, the consensus odds have the Rockies as a -130 favorite both in Las Vegas and overseas.
Note: When placing your action, you MUST list Jhoulys Chacin of the Rockies and Mitch Talbot of the Indians as the starting pitchers. If either Chacin or Talbot doesn't start this game, this play is voided!
