              Wake Forest at Syracuse
              Play: Wake Forest

To show the lack of enthusiasm for this Orangemen team the Stadium which seats 50,000 is expected to have just 37,000 in attendance for the season opener. After five straight seasons of four wins or less Syracuse managed a solid 8-5 season including a bowl win over Kansas State. While Doug Marrone has done a fine job we expect this club to regress this season. They were very healthy last year and they benefitted in close games going 4-0 in contests decided by 7 points or less. The non-conference slate was much easier last season while they face the likes of USC on the road this campaign. The offense returns eight starters but they only produced 22.2 points last season. The defense was very good last year but only five starters return on that side of the ball. Syracuse has been a far better team the last few years on the road so they don't deserve the traditional home field advantage.

Jim Grobe has done more with less than just about any coach in the country. Coaching at a university which is known for their basketball and not football prowess is a major challenge. That said in his ten year career in Winston-Salem he has posted five winning seasons. Off back to back losing campaigns and with 17 returning starters we expect the Demon Deacons to return to respectability. This is the most experienced team Grobe has had in the last decade, and after a huge 9.5 ppg defensive drop last year we expect Wake to be much better defensively. Grobe is 34-24-2 ATS getting points at Wake Forest and the line here is much higher than we projected.

Mid level squads like Syracuse and Wake Forest tend to have a certain level of play based on history and talent. Syracuse exceeded that level last year while Wake Forest regressed. That gives us plenty of pointspread value to open the year as we grade out Wake Forest as the slightly better team catching a touchdown.

Mike Davis (of powerhousepicks) free play
9-3-1 in preseason. does anyone have his paid play for tonight?

                            Play is on the Patriots.

The Giants (1-2) head into Foxborough to face the Patriots (2-1) in the final preseason game for both teams.

New England was very flat last week as Detroit attacked them early and often. Brady and his offensive bunch had a tough time getting going and the defense was just as putrid. This didn't look like the Patriots team that had annihilated it's first two preseason opponents. Although Belichick hasn't said how much (or if) Tom Brady and the other starters will play, it wouldn't shock me to see them out there for at least a quarter. Last year in the preseason finale, Brady played the entire first quarter.

However, my selection is not predicated on how long (or if) the Patriots' starters are going to play (if they do, it certainly favors the Pats). My play is more about how much better the Patriots' back-ups are than the Giants, the fact that the G-Men have had only 2 days rest, and I like the Patriots scheme and back-up quarterbacks better. Also, the Patriots are very deep at running back and you could see 2nd round draft pick Shane Vereen make his pro debut this week.

Add to it the fact that Belichick wasn't happy at all with last week's effort and you have a combination that I can't pass up.

My free play is on the Patriots for 1*

                              NFL: Packers Host KC Chiefs
                              By: Matty Simo

Kansas City Chiefs at Green Bay Packers (-2, 37)

The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers will wrap up the 2011 preseason at home on Thursday night against the winless Kansas City Chiefs.

The Packers (2-1) earned a 28-20 victory against the Arizona Cardinals in their only game at Lambeau Field this preseason two weeks ago. They will be looking to take a three-game winning streak into their regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints next Thursday night.

Green Bay is a 3-point favorite according to the Don Best odds screen with the total set at 38. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (ET).

Despite coming off a successful regular season, the Chiefs (0-3) have lost five straight games both straight up and against the spread dating back to last year. The ‘under’ is 4-1 in those games, as they have totaled only 23 points this preseason.

Kansas City is the defending AFC West champion but has looked nothing like the team that won 10 games in 2010. A lot of that has to do with the lack of playing time for starters in the first three games, including quarterback Matt Cassel, running backs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.

Cassel has thrown just 27 passes while Charles and Jones have totaled 15 carries between them and Bowe has made four catches.

Bettors can expect more of the same in the preseason finale from both teams, with reserves logging most of the playing time to avoid injuries and give young players one last opportunity to win a spot on the final roster. Veteran quarterback Tyler Palko and rookie Ricky Stanzi figure to split the snaps under center for the Chiefs. The Packers will likely turn to Matt Flynn and Graham Harrell to run the offense in place of reigning Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Green Bay wide receivers Greg Jennings and Randall Cobb did not play in last week’s 24-21 win at Indianapolis due to bruised knees, and both will probably rest again to get ready for the Saints. Neither of them was needed as the team rallied back from a 14-10 halftime deficit behind Harrell and kicker Mason Crosby, who connected on three field goals including the game-winner from 50 yards out as time expired.

Harrell had thrown a touchdown pass and converted a two-point conversion to Ryan Taylor with 35 seconds on the clock to tie the score at 21.

Rodgers did not play in last year’s preseason finale, and the NFL’s top-rated passer is expected to watch from the sideline this Thursday after spraining his foot against the Colts. He enjoyed a phenomenal preseason for the second year in a row, completing 34 of 43 passes for 375 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions to help the ‘over’ cash in all three of the Pack’s preseason games.
