    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#5 Mahjong Girl She has never been able to stay a trip, but there is really no other pace signed on in here, and she might be able to steal this if she can move forward in the third career start and ration that speed a little bit better today.
#4 Grinning Guessing she'll be settled a few lengths off the top choice waiting for her turn to take a shot, and she might turn in her best try yet while racing with Lasix for the first time with some added maturity into her 3-year-old season.
#2 Banana Pudding She's supposed to make a little sense here for top connections while bringing reasonable upside off the Aqueduct debut, but you've got to be hoping for pretty much a total 180 today at what might not be the most appealing price.
Race Summary Fun race to open the card -- wouldn't be totally shocked to see #1 Blame The Warrior in the mix, too. Mahjong Girl has a lot of proving to do, but she should control the tempo and might be a bit more comfortable early going long this second time around?
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#7 Colonel Poppy Liked him a bit last time around and will give him another chance after a troubled run that day, and he might get a nice run of things while just tucked in behind the quicker players early. Spy to score?
#8 Straightouttadutton Think he's in line for a great attacking trip from the start in a race with a few other forward players but not a ton of committed front-end pace. He was in the frame with similar a couple starts back.
#5 Tony Small He's an honest finisher who just couldn't sustain his run last time out, but he makes sense for a share of this when the chasing players start to come back.
Race Summary Colonel Poppy is worth another look after his last one, and he might offer an OK price in a spot where #2 Hector looms tough again at a likely short price.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#1 La Panda She won a couple races here last year before the cutoff for this race's condition, and she can probably move forward off the Colonial comeback. She should be in a great spot throughout.
#2 Protectthewitness Reliable player has has positional pace similar to the top choice, and they have similar sorts of recent running lines, too. Interested to see how the wagering shakes out between these two, but I think it's tough to get past them.
#5 All Bizz She has been dreadful in two starts this year, but she has a few Finger Lakes races on her page from before the layoff that would make her interesting enough. She has some questions to answer, but I think she might be able to wake up a bit with the new scenery? Might get a jump on the deeper finishers.
Race Summary Have a slightly difficult time seeing someone other than La Panda or Protectthewitness landing this one -- the former might offer a touch better price on the board in what feels like a top-heavy race.

      #3
      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Colonial Downs - Race #1
#9 SHUT IT CALI (9-2) Right set-up, right price but clean trip needed, picks up McCarthy.
#1 HUMOR SENSE (5-2) ‘Responded when headed’ but got beat as fave at one mile two back on dirt.
#3 CORINTH (4-1) Gets needed class relief, also changes riders for third start of cycle with Lasix.
Race Summary Troubled starts and wide trips have been a problem for SHUT IT CALI, who draws outside. But she’s a steady closer, gets McCarthy and gets pace to rally into. She made up ground on the fleet-footed 6-1 winner as the favorite at 6F last out. Bet to win and place.
      Colonial Downs - Race #2
#8 HAZELMOOR BEACH (6-1) Gets class relief, switches pilots, duplicate of 1M race two back fits well.
#1 CAT ONE (5-2) Romped in lone try at this level on synthetic track two starts ago, draws rail.
#6 HOUSE OF MELODY (2-1) Gulfstream shipper might need to find passing gear for top barn.
Race Summary HAZELMOOR BEACH was ‘reserved’ while following winning favorite Catch The Kitten (20/3-3-4, $97k), bid 2-wide at the top of the stretch and settled for second best for a $20K tag two back. She should sit an ideal trip at a good price. Bet to win and place and play a 1,8/1,5,8/ALL trifecta.
      Colonial Downs - Race #5
#3 GUILDENSTERN (7-5) Met sharp allowance foes, drops down for score, today’s Best Bet.
#6 VALUE ENGINEER (2-1) Has speed, gets Lasix for second start as a 3yo for high-percentage duo.
#1 CATALINA EXPRESS (30-1) Steady check-getter just won for $16k, turf and distance the questions.
Race Summary GUILDENSTERN kept quality company in his two starts in the U.S., earning competitive speed figures against the likes of repeat winner Won An Award ($89k) and Justintimeforwine (12-53, $296k). The class drop should pave the way to the winners’ circle. Bet to win and place.

            Colonial Downs - Race #9 - Post: 5:15pm - Maiden Special - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $60,000 Class Rating: 80

            Rating:

            #7 SMART UNCLE (ML=8/1)
            #12 OSKAR MARTINEZ (IRE) (ML=7/2)
            #1 BEE PLUS (ML=9/2)
            #5 SPIN IT (ML=6/1)

SMART UNCLE - Fisher is solid in turf routes. This animal should have no justifications if he doesn't win. Ran a less than stellar race at Great Meadows in the last race. Racing on a fast track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders roll call. This gelding gets a weight break of -24 pounds from last race. This certainly could make the difference today. OSKAR MARTINEZ (IRE) - Carrasco was aboard this gelding last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. This trainer brings horses to the grass in shape and ready to win, winning over 20 pct of the time under similar conditions. BEE PLUS - If you review the PP's for this animal, you'll see he has recorded the top speed rating at the distance and surface. A repeat race in this event and this horse has a superb chance to win. Taking a trip to a lower level; has the ability to make his presence felt. The addition of Lasix might make this equine wake up and smell the coffee right here. Looking like a potential overlay right here at odds of 9/2. Finished fourth in last race at Gulfstream Park but was close at the wire. SPIN IT - The May 18th race at Churchill Downs was at a class level of (91). Dropping down in class ranks a significant amount, so he should be in a good position.

Vulnerable Contenders: #11 FALL LINE (ML=6/1),

FALL LINE - If he goes off at the morning line of 6/1, I'll have to pass.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #7 SMART UNCLE to win. Have to have odds of at least 4/1 or better though
EXACTA WAGERS: Box [7,12] Box [1,7] Box [5,7]

              # 4 GHOST COWBOY 7/2
              # 2 GUTZY 5/2
PINCH HITTER looks to be a strong contender. Must be in good form if the handler is bringing him back so quickly. This racer has some longshot angles going for him. Ought to be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. GHOST COWBOY - This gelding with Dominguez in the irons makes him a solid choice. Has quite good early pace and will most likely fare strongly versus this field. GUTZY - Wilson has him trained solidly to break promptly out of the starting gate. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class numbers of this group.

                # 9 ANYTHING PAZIBLE 6/1
                # 2 JACOBA 7/2
MAX FOSTER looks very good to best this field. This gelding gets a boost with Navarro in the saddle. Navarro will almost certainly be able to get this gelding to break out quickly for this event. Garnered a reliable Equibase Speed Figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this race. ANYTHING PAZIBLE - Is hard not to examine based on Speed Figures which have been respectable - 69 avg - of late. Has performed quite well as of late in route races, posting a nifty 71 avg Equibase speed fig. JACOBA - Could best this group of horses based on the speed figure - 71 - of his last race. With a nice class figure average of 87, has one of the top class advantages in this field.

                  Rating:

                  #1 BLAME THE WARRIOR (ML=9/2)

BLAME THE WARRIOR - Ran against the males in her last race on July 15th. A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a nice effort is a good sign.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 GRINNING (ML=5/2), #2 BANANA PUDDING (ML=3/1), #3 LITTLE MISS MUNNY (ML=7/2),

GRINNING - I normally try to beat this kind of chalk. Extended layoff and no drop in level of competition. BANANA PUDDING - This filly garnered a rating in her last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's race. LITTLE MISS MUNNY - Tough to put any cash on this filly on the top end. Likes to land in the money though.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 BLAME THE WARRIOR to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better

                    # 2 LOST MY SOCK 7/2
WRIGHT UP FRONT looks decent to best this group particularly if the morning line of 8/1 holds. Is worth a close look and may be a wager - strong Equibase Speed Figures (86 average) at today's distance and surface lately. Ran a solid last race. She has been running well and the Equibase Speed Figs are among the best in this field. SHARE THE BLESSING - Should be given consideration - I like the figs from the last race. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong speed figures (84 average) at today's distance and surface recently. LOST MY SOCK - With a reliable 80 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's competition. The speedy return to racing points to a solid effort this time around.

RIVER OF BABYLON is my choice. Overall the Speed Figures of this horse look solid in this affair. GUS'S GAMBLE - This rider and conditioner team has produced some strong return on investment numbers at this track. Ought to go to the front end and could never look back. SENSIBLE PORTIONS - Recorded a solid Equibase Speed Fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. With a formidable 66 average Equibase speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's race.

                        Mountaineer Park - Race #2 - Post: 7:25pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $11,300 Class Rating: 73

                        Rating:

                        #4 CHASE LIL ME (ML=6/1)
                        #1 MOON OVER DUBAI (ML=3/1)
                        #10 WILD WINE (ML=10/1)
                        #12 NICKANDME (ML=10/1)

CHASE LIL ME - Many positive 'vibes' attached to this thoroughbred and his brain trust. MOON OVER DUBAI - Dropping in class rating points from his August 4th race at Mountaineer Park. Based on that data, I will give this thoroughbred the advantage. WILD WINE - When Aviles and Pizzurro combine forces on animals the ROI has been fabulous at +103. 'Horse-for-the-course' is a classic handicapping angle. Since this horse has won on this turf course it may give him an advantage. After a pair of sprints, he's routing today, which is probably what this horse wants to do. NICKANDME - Was in an Allowance race at Mountaineer Park last time out. That race had a class rating of 86 and he is moving down in this event. A certain contender. We have a turf route race here. Secret Circle's offspring have run well on the grass with a win percent of 20. Gelding's win percentage is better than 50 percent in first and second starts off a vacation.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #7 TAPINTOYOURBEER (ML=8/5), #11 DISASTER RECOVERY (ML=6/1), #2 HARTEL (ML=8/1),

TAPINTOYOURBEER - Hard to keep stabbing at this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. July 17th is the last time we've seen this gelding around. Have to be a little bit leery. Didn't close any ground whatsoever on Jul 17th. Hard to wager on this time around at the expected odds. DISASTER RECOVERY - This horse just hasn't looked fit of late. This horse ran a mediocre speed rating last race out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably get beat in today's event running that rating. HARTEL - This gelding is always in the money, but just doesn't finish first. Difficult to wager on him on the top end. 8/1 odds isn't enough for this horse when scrutinizing the most recent outings.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #4 CHASE LIL ME to win if you can get at least 9/2 odds

                              Louisiana Downs - Race #1 - Post: 4:05pm - Maiden Special - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,000 Class Rating: 59

                              Rating:

                              #6 BIG NICKEL (ML=3/1)
                              #1 AMPITUP (ML=4/1)

BIG NICKEL - Jock jumped on this gelding's back for the 1st time on July 29th. Should 'know' the animal even better in today's contest. This pony coming off a sharp performance in the last 30 days is a contender in my opinion. AMPITUP - The recent bullet 47.1 work should put this gelding on track for today's outing. I think that the addition of the 'shades' today will keep his mind on the race at hand.

                              Vulnerable Contenders: #7 A MILLION MOONS (ML=5/2), #2 MAGNOLIA WEST (ML=9/2), #5 FRIENDLY HINT (ML=6/1),

A MILLION MOONS - The speed rating last race out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's contest. Mark this mount as a likely underlay. MAGNOLIA WEST - Can't wager on this vulnerable equine in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint affair lately. FRIENDLY HINT - Just don't believe he is worth it at the expected odds.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #6 BIG NICKEL on the win end if we get at least 3/2 odds
