I pretty much never do this, but I liked Cloud Atlas so much that I bought the book today. Hopefully it will be awesome.Leave a comment:

I think there have been a few mass consciousness experiments that have demonstrated some interesting results.Leave a comment:

I thought it was a joke at first, but then I realized they were serious. I'd actually like to see that shit go down.Leave a comment:

I'm actually really looking forward to the Blu-Ray now. Not only do I want to re-watch it but I'm sure--or at least I'm hoping--that it's going to be packed with extras.Leave a comment:

So I did it. I went and saw Cloud Atlas.
I was very iffy about it and walked in with a certain sense of dread because the last thing I wanted to do was get stuck in a three hour movie where I was confused and bored the whole time. After all, even most of the positive reviews said, "So what's the movie actually about? Fuck, I don't know."
But I have to say that my fears were unfounded: It's a fucking incredible movie.
I think you need to go into it with the proper understanding of what it is that you're about to see. The overriding theme, at least from what I took from it, is that our souls travel from body to body across time, living out different lives, and throughout the process our paths intersect with many of the same people. And the movie is essentially a handful--maybe six?--individual short films that are pulled together by this connecting cord that binds the characters throughout the ages.
These individual story lines are easy enough to understand and, for the most part, I was never really confused about what was happening. What IS kind of confusing is exactly the ways in which each story is connected to the rest. I'm certain that there were a lot of things that I didn't catch in this regard. But as long as you just have an understanding of the connection then it's enough.
One thing I did notice was that some storylines were more interesting to me than others. So I found myself excited to return to those storylines and disappointed when we switched to one that I wasn't particularly into.
The visuals are amazing. The acting is amazing. The different types of characters that Tom Hanks plays and the ways in which he looks and acts completely differently are mindblowing. On a couple of occasions it took me a little while before I realized it was even him.
All in all I just thought it was fucking great. The $10M it made on opening weekend is a tragedy. I think that with this film the Wachowskis are back in a big way and it's arguable that, if Cloud Atlas is not as great of an achievement as The Matrix was, it is at least close to it.
If the trailer has caught your eye, definitely go see it.Last edited by SPX; 11-02-2012, 05:29 PM.Leave a comment:
