He is a solid grappler, and he may very well be top ten skill wise... but I was laughing at the poster who was acting like it was crazy to say Palhares is not top 10 (in sub-grappling). he has only competed once, and he went 2-1, that's it. Not enough info there to be ranked in the top 10, when there are dozens of guys who actually have won their divisions still competing (5 of which competed in that very same tourney).

Even if he competed more I don't know that I would just rank him in the top 10 because he's a leglock savant. Cody McKenzie might be awesome at snagging and finishing chokes but that doesn't make him a top grappler.

Yeah, but Palhares hit those heel hooks on legitimate grapplers in Lovato and Avellan. It is not like he was tapping scrubs out on TUF. Palhares is more than a leg lock machine though, he has other stuff, I recall him snagging an armbar from the back in one his first UFC fights (maybe he didn't finish it, but he got to teh back and transitioned off). I doubt he would be top 10, but you could at least argue that he has the potential... you can't argue that he actually is top 10 though. I mean, he probably isn't even top 50.

There is a huge difference between Palhares and McKenzie for real. I cannot emphasize that enough. It is like comparing JDS's striking to someone like Brett Rogers. JDS has a real foundation with fundamentals and could probably hang with any striker in the world in a striking only match. Rogers... could not. Though they both knock dudes out in MMA.

I'm not comparing him to Cody, I'm just saying people see the heel hooks which is clearly his go to maneuver and automatically think he's a full on grappling elite because he is extremely good at one kind of attack. There's a difference between being all around skilled and being a savant at one piece of it.
