Just watched it again. Hector is clearly a pressure fighter who just keeps coming and coming and wearing your ass down until you break. Vick likes to fight from range and potshot with his kicks. If anything, this underscores what we were talking about earlier about the importance of having good punching skills. Almost all fights end up in clinch range at some point or another and you need to have the punching (and grappling) skills to either finish the fight there or disengage and get back to where you're comfortable. Still, though, I thought that Hector won round 1 and clearly won the last two rounds when Vick looked like he was about to be carried out on a stretcher, but for every round in between I thought Vick was mostly able to keep the fight where he wanted it and kick, kick, kick.

Did you watch both parts? What did you think of the decision?

The grappling tourney used to be run by Relson. They got out of it and it was being run by a bunch of TMA guys that didn't know jack shit about grappling. It was a complete joke, and everyone stopped going. But I think Relson got back involved and it was supposedly a good tourney again this year. In the past it was one of the major tourneys in the U.S. The year I went, there was 1 purple belt, and that was the highest rank there.

No, definitely not. Just meant that the event promoters might be trying to build the whole thing back up again.

I didn't think there was any doubt Pena won the fight overall. He took those first three rounds without any trouble, and the last two without any trouble. Vick got better in the middle portion of the fight but still lost a couple rounds in there as well. Pena was just constantly in his face and throwing wicked hooks despite being kicked to shit.

I just watched some of the TKD vids from the Olympics. It really is a peculiar sport.

Although you still see some really risky moves, watch how the fighting style becomes more conservative without all that padding and begins to resemble kyokushin (moreso the second fight than the first)

It's interesting you mention the comparison to Kyokushin. I hadn't really thought that, but after you mentioned it, it does seem something like a TKD version of KK. These guys are great kickers but damn they really need to work on that punching.

BTW, this is clearly WTF-based and I see they're going under the Pro TKD name. I'm guessing that is (or was) a different organization than the more kickboxing-like Pro TKD that is being run out of Europe?
