I do wish you could have found a harder looking group of karatekas though instead of 6 old fat guys. But I think your view point was more about the lifestyle than actually promoting karate, so it made sense. Anyway, well done. You should post that in the OT thread so someone will actually see it.2012: +19.33

It's pretty simple, but I'm pleased with it overall. I'd like to try do something a little bigger and more elaborate next and eventually work my way up to doing something feature-length.
The guy who teaches the Friday night fighting class is pretty bad ass, though. He's trained with the US National Team and he'll fuck you up. I wish that his class wasn't only once a week, though.
I actually have forged something of an alliance with these guys and talked to the fighting class instructor for about an hour and a half after class last Friday. He'd like to get some young blood in there, like some college-aged guys who are wanting to throw down. I might try to use my status as a student at the U to help them make that happen. It would be cool if I could because then I'd have somewhere cool to train.
I think I might start attending classes for a few months and see what I can make happen.
Those guys actually inspire me a bit. Even though they're old, they're serious about it and some of them have been doing it for like 40 years now.
I actually thought about that, but was like, fuck it. Niggas shouldn't be ignoring the most awesome thread on IWS anyway.I heart cockComment

Well, you're doing it... so congrats. You're trying to do what you want to do in life, which is more than a lot of people can say. If nothing else, when it is all said and done, you will have some things to show for your effort, even if you never make any money at it or lose your passion for it- at least you will be able to do something and have a few pieces that you can point to and say "look at what I made."
I've actively had an interest in filmmaking for most of the past half of my life, but without the direction of teachers and the necessity of completing assignments, I just haven't really known how to get started, especially since I've never had other friends who were really interested in doing the shit.
I feel like I'm getting started and the fact that what I've made so far isn't totally shitty and actually makes me appear somewhat competent is encouraging. I'm actually typing this while in the middle of my last class of the semester and I'll be out of school for the next month, so I think I'm going to try to plan out a slightly larger project and try to get that going.
Yeah, the older I get, the more I realize martial arts are not strictly about being a tough guy. The guys that I look up to in BJJ the most are the old guys that do it for the joy of itself, just art for the sake of art... they just do it because they want to and enjoy it. And honestly, that is where I am at with it, I just do it because. There is a 61 yr old guy at my gym, he is 130# and a blackbelt. He can still tap out 200# college kids... he isn't a great fighter, and after about a year those 200# college kids can at least stalemate with him. But he is so consistent, he shows up almost every day and it is just a part of his life, like eating breakfast.
And that's one reason that I've always been interested in traditional styles, since many of them place a big emphasis not just on fighting competency but also on the philosophical aspects of how martial arts can help you refine your character and how it can be something that you do all throughout your life.I heart cockComment

Cool thanks, I appreciate it.
I think it's a good start, but give me a couple of years and hopefully I'll be doing shit that's more impressive.

BOL! That's Kent. He is actually the senior instructor and was one of the founding members of the dojo when it was first started at BYU back in the 70s. He's a good dude and he knows a lot, but his body is all fucked up and he can't hardly do the shit anymore. He still shows up religiously three times a week to lead the class, though.
I know. I'm a dick for that.I heart cockComment

Al doesn't weigh 130. And I have read that Al doesn't actually roll with the class, just does private lessons. I don't know if that is true or not, but the Gracie Academy is a bunch of sell-outs, so it wouldn't surprise me.2012: +19.33
