So basically you wanted to learn how to do what was done to you? I'm not seeing a huge leap between that story and the person who wants to learn a martial art for self defense. It's just a slight variant on the whole concept since you sort of knew what you were getting into at the time.

I like the game. To me it is like tennis or basketball or whatever. If it was a fight, i would have killed him.

Which brings Me back to being more or less ignorant of something being put in front of you. If you have no experience with something chances are you won't know how to properly deal with it.

I guess what I'm getting at is that it's not like tennis or basketball. You just said you've done some fairly extensive kickboxing training, you wouldn't have done it if you didn't have some kind of motive whether it was just finding a "different" way of staying in shape or if you liked it to some degree. If it was all the same I don't think you would have chosen jiu jitsu or kickboxing or any kind of combat sport that happens to be a good way to stay in shape too because it's generally much more expensive and injury risking than say basketball or soccer.

Im not sure what you are saying. This wss 1999, i knew what bjj was, and tried to train it, but had to settle for judo. I knew what a triangle choke was.

As for combat sports, i just think they are more fun. I also enjoy ping pong, and i dont care if it has any other application.

Aren't you two the only ones?

Oh, how much are hand wraps? I'm going to be training the night they do boxing around the end of the month. I'm supposed to try and KO everybody in sparring right?

Being aware of the existence of something and having had a personal experience with it are two entirely different things. What I said before about not being familiar with something was in reply to your comment that if it were a fight you'd have killed the smaller jiu jitsu player.

Ping pong doesn't really have any other direct application. Combat sports do, and it is because of this that many people decide to train in them whether it's for self defense or the fun of it or to get/stay in shape. I don't necessarily buy that you just liking combat sports is the only reason you took up jiu jitsu when it holds no more significance than ping pong to you.

You're very money conscious, and you apply a practical logic to most every situation, at least from what I've observed. I find it very difficult to believe that you just like jiu jitsu and sort of fell into it, especially after settling for judo in the beginning, if you hadn't had a genuine passion for it in some sense.

I always figured Scientist kind of just fell into BJJ because he was/is a wrestler. When you wrestle and another type of grappling art comes up I'm sure it sparks curiosity.

no wiseman, spx, and ludo all have done some training. I just meant that I really don't know jack shit about striking, despite having done is casually for 3 years as an adult.

I didn't know SPX trained in striking. I thought he has only done that gay TKD stuff. And didn't know Ludo did either...maybe he is butterbean and that's why he won't post a pic

I don't know... I definitely have a passion for it. I think about grappling multiple hours of every day. It does have other benefits that make me like it even more, but I think I would still do it even if there were no other benefits. It is just fun for me. Grappling has always been fun for me since I used to wrestle with brother when I was a toddler. There are probably psychological reasons why I like it, but for me it just seems like a fun thing to do. Maybe when I started looking for it, it was because I wanted to be the toughest guy, like Royce. But that wore off pretty quick, I really don't even remember thinking that.

lol. I consider TKD striking. Ludo says he has played around with a few different MA's, including MT. I said that, now that I read it- I sound kind of douchy, I meant it in a self deprecating way. I really never took to it, I am not good at it, and I never really figured out how to make it more useful than raw aggression. My (ex) step dad was a boxing instructor in the Army, and he used to try to teach me stuff when I was in Jr High and High School. I can make a speed bag look pretty cool... but when it comes to actually hitting someone, I am pretty hopeless (actually that's not true, I can hit, but I am really not good at avoiding being hit, or having an actual edge in the battle... it is more like, lets just start winging and see what happens). I think it is because I am a big brother, and spent nearly every day of my childhood fighting (seriously), I just have a natural disposition to get in there and trade and expect it to work on everyone.

The UFc used to be there, maybe they will bring it back since the Arnolds seem to be improving again. There were a ton of MMA fighters just walking around when I was there. I was walking behind Mark Coleman for a long time, no one said anything to him. He is really not very big, I am way bigger than him (not more muscular, just a bigger man- taller, wider).
