See, i didn't like season 3 as much as 2. So far, I like season 4... the only thing I am finding tough to swallow is that Dexter has gotten more and more bold/superhero-ish/good guy as time goes by. I don't really care for the Harry as subconsious thing. And the plot lines are becoming a little convenient. Still compared to most of the drivel out there...

I think it's bad ass. I've always liked it. Most younger people who see it don't seem to really understand what all the fuss is about, but I think they're too used to shit-jumping-out-at-you kind of horrow to appreciate something like The Exorcist.

On the same topic, I saw The Omen for the first time a couple of nights ago. It was okay. I'm glad I saw it just so that I can add that notch to my belt and talk about it if the subject comes up, but The Exorcist kicks its ass.

Yeah, horror flicks don't scare me. I usually just think they are really shitty movies. But I saw the Excorcist when I was in college, and it is not "scary" in the traditional sense that you jump at the loud noises or guy in the mirror. But later on when you are trying to sleep, you are just creeped out with actual fear that you might become possessed by a demon.

Most horror flicks, they are either too unrealistic or I it is some killer in the room. I am not afraid of killers, I always just think "I would just whoop his ass and take his knife." I have known too many criminals, including murderers and they are not scary, they are just stupid. Monsters/vampires/werewolves don't exist and as such I don't fear them.

But the with a possession, you are sort of like "could that really happen?" Even though I don't really belive in demons or demon possession, there is enough doubt and realism in that movie there to make it actually legitimately frightening. I have never seen "The Omen" but I have heard the same thing about it.

The Shining was scary to me because I saw it when I was a kid and it just sort of creeped me.

This is me with the Godfather. I waited to see it until I was in college. By that time I had already seen a lot of gangster flicks, so I was didn't care for it. I still don't. I appreciate it for what it is, having been really the first movie to look at crime families and also creating a lot of what we think about the mob now. But I still am not going to sit down and watch that movie again.

Yeah, you're right. The evil in The Exorcist is in many ways so much more terrifying than a serial killer or the like because it's something non-physical. We at least know the ground rules for dealing with psychos. They are mortal and if you're able to kill them, then you can win that way. But who knows how to kill a demon? Who knows the rules of their world and what exactly their nature is? It's that reality of the unknown which should conjure fear.

I've been reading around on the IMDB board for the movie and one of the posters made a good point. He said that the level of fear the movie generates is directly related to one's belief in demons, or at least in some unseen, supernatural evil in the world. If you believe in that--or at least have the capacity to believe in it--then The Exorcist is truly terrifying. If not, then it's not.

I saw the Godfather for the first time a few years ago. I thought it was good, but like you say, a lot of gangster movies have come out since then.

This is kind of the position that Citizen Kane is in as well. A lot of people who see it today with no background information don't understand why it's remained at the top spot of many lists for decades as the greatest film of all time. Having recently seen it also for the first time, I can understand someone being underwhelmed. I watched it and was like, "Really? That's it? Greatest of All Time?" But to really know why it holds that spot in many minds, you have to understand that Orson Welles pioneered many film techniques that are still being used today and that he forever changed the way movies are made.

The greatest film of all time is clearly Goodfellas. Now go home and get your fuckin shinebox.

I think the film GOAT is Bloodsport.

At least it will always be so in my heart.

Pulp Fiction is one of my all-timers. I cant argue with the Godfather or Goodfellas either.

                        Everything QT does is awesome.

The only Tarantino movie I don't really get into is Reservoir Dogs. I know a lot of people think it's the shit, but I just have never really liked it. Everything else is great, though.

I loved Reservoir Dogs too. I saw it, like most, after Pulp fiction.

Yeah, Reservoir Dogs is no Pulp Fiction, but what is? Reservoir Dogs is great. QT movies are all about the ride, not the end result. And style too. RD is way better than say Jackie Brown or Death Proof.
