man how the hell o you score jiu jistu competitions. From what i saw, they were in a neutral position most of the time. Maia had the one legit sub attempt that he almost finished, but okami passed guard a couple times and almost took his back.

ADCC is not bjj, Maia was given a judge's decision. No points were scored in the match. Maia would have gotten a bjj equivalent of an advantage on the armbar. Okami never passed guard and was warned twice for stalling. He should have gotten an advantage for the back take attempt, but he didn't get the back, so no points. I think the combination of Maia's advantage for a very close submission, the fact that he (Maia) basically controlled the match and Okami just responded the entire time, and Okami's stalling are why he got the nod. In ADCC, in the qualifying rounds, there is no overtime. Had this been in the finals, there would have been an overtime round.

But, yeah, not a good fight to look at grappling scoring, as some people would have given Okami the nod. In my opinion, Okami did not try anything earlier because he was scared to open up, he didn't go for anything until the very end of the match, something like getting a takedown in MMA with 10 seconds left- nothing too bad is going to happen.
