NBA Finals action report: Sharp money on Spurs, under in Game 7

The NBA Finals is down to a deciding Game 7 showdown between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat Thursday night. We talk to online sportsbooks about the betting trends and where they think the odds will close come the 9 p.m. ET tipoff:

San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat – Open: -6.5, Open: -7, Move: -5.5

After a thrilling comeback and overtime victory in Game 6, books opened the Heat as high as 7-point home favorites for Game 7, tacking a little something extra to the spread after the Spurs’ crushing collapse.

However, the majority of action has sided with San Antonio and has driven the line down as many as 1.5 points at some markets. According to Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker with CarbonSports.ag, they took early bets on the Heat before sharp wagers came in on the Spurs at +6.5 and dropped the spread to Miami -5.5.

“So far 70 percent of the action is on the Spurs but I do believe we’re going to see money come in on the Heat as we get closer to game time,” Stewart tells Covers. “Since going to Heat -5.5, we’ve seen a bit more money on them at that price, but nothing significant. I imagine we’ll be closing at the current number of 5.5.”

Plenty of San Antonio backers are waving the points and taking the Spurs to win straight up on the moneyline. The Spurs opened as +240 underdogs (Heat -280) at most markets and have been bet down as low as +210.

According to Aron Black of Bet365.com, moneyline wagers on San Antonio are outnumbering those on Miami at a 3:1 rate. Those bettors who are playing Miami’s pricy moneyline are parlaying it with other favorites on Thursday’s sports betting schedule.

“There are most likely a lot of players who if they backed Miami to win the title before Game 6, they are now possibly getting out on San Antonio straight up tonight,” Black tells Covers. “With our NBA Finals series position and our NBA futures position, we are fortunate to be happy with whoever wins the title.”

The total for Game 7 opened at 190 points and has been down to 188, despite the last four games playing over the number. Game 6, however, would have finished under if not for the Heat forcing the overtime period in the dying seconds.

Stewart says sharp money swooped in early on the under and trimmed the total to 188.5 at CarbonSports.ag before the public action showed up on the over, countering the wiseguy wagers.

“Currently we’re seeing more over action than under action, but the under action we booked we respect and we like our position at this point,” he says. “Just over 60 percent of the action is on the over and I believe we’ll eventually go back to 189 at some point later today.”

Weather: Temperatures in the mid-70s and clear skies. Winds will blow in from left field at 8 mph.

Key betting stat: The under is 7-0-1 in Boston’s last eight overall.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (-173, 7.5)

Hot pitcher: Cardinals starter Lance Lynn hasn’t picked up a loss since May 7 and is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA in six career appearances against the Cubs.

Cold pitcher: Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol recorded the blown save and loss Sunday in New York, allowing four runs on a pair of home runs in Chicago’s 4-3 loss.

Weather: Temperatures in the low-80s and clear skies. Winds will blow out to left field at 9 mph.

Key betting stat: The Cubs actually have a winning record outside the division, but they are 9-23 against NL Central opponents, the worst record in the majors within the division.

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels (101, 7)

Hot pitcher: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez has won three consecutive decisions and has a 1.84 ERA over his last four starts. He has excelled on the road with a 6-2 mark to go with a 1.74 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.

Cold pitcher: Mariners closer Tom Wilhelmsen has blown his last two save attempts, yielding six earned runs over his last 2 2/3 innings pitched.

Weather: Temperatures in the low-70s and clear skies. Winds will blow out to right field at 6 mph.

Key betting stat: Seattle continues to be a porous offensive squad and has scored only 30 runs in its last 13 games – tallying one run or fewer five times during the stretch. The under is 11-2 in the Mariners’ last 13 overall.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres (-131, 7.5)

Hot pitcher: Padres starter Jason Marquis has put together three straight wins in as many quality starts and hasn’t suffered a loss since April 22.

Weather: Temperatures in the mid-60s and clear skies. Winds will blow out to center field at 5 mph.

Key betting stat: The Padres are 7-0 in Marquis' last seven home starts.

Miami Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-175, 7.5)

Hot pitcher: Giants’ lefty specialist Javier Lopez has not been charged with a run in his last 17 outings (11 IP). Left-handed batters are just 2-for-26 (.077) against him this season.

Cold pitcher: After yielding three or fewer runs in each of his previous four turns, rookie Marlins starter Tom Koehler has been knocked around for 17 earned runs and five homers in his last three. Koehler is 0-2 with a 5.04 ERA in eight road games - four starts.

Weather: Temperatures in the mid-50s with clear skies. Winds will blow out to right field at 13 mph.

Key betting stat: Surprisingly, the Marlins are 7-0 in the last seven meetings in San Francisco. However, the last series in San Fran was back in May, 2012.

3-unit Play Take #921 Seattle Mariners (-110) over Los Angeles Angels (10:05pm ET) The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels wrap up their four-game series tonight in Anaheim. The Angels have taken two of the first three after winning a close 1-0 game last night. These teams are separated by just a half game in the standings, but for some reason the Angels are still getting a little bit too much respect in this matchup. One of the best pitchers in all of baseball is going for Seattle in Felix Hernandez, and this game is virtually set at a pick em price. King Felix is 8-4 with a 2.32 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 15 starts this season. Those are the best numbers of his career and his K/BB rate is also at a personal best. He's definitely backing up that huge contract he received in the offseason, raising his game yet another notch. The Angels will go to battle with right-hander Tommy Hanson in this one. It's been a difficult season for the 26-year old. He comes in at 4-2 with a 3.94 ERA, but his WHIP is at 1.45 and his strikeouts are way down from his norm at just 6.1 per nine innings. He's never been the same pitcher after a series on injuries with the Braves, which is why they shipped him out of town. And the Braves usually don't let good pitching talent go, so don't expect Hanson to return to his old form. The Angels obviously feature a more potent offense, but it hasn't performed like it should in 2013. The pitching matchup advantage for Seattle is big enough to warrant a play on them at this price.

Best of Luck - Doc's Sports
