                        Sep 21, 2017

No. 19 Mississippi State launched itself into the national rankings with an impressive rout of LSU last week in its SEC opener, and now it hits the road for a rare matchup against No. 12 Georgia on Saturday looking to continue building itself as a challenger in the SEC West. Everything went right for Mississippi State last week as quarterback Nick Fitzgerald accounted for four touchdowns, but coach Dan Mullen acknowledged to reporters Tuesday this week presents a new challenge.

“It’s our first SEC road game, which adds different challenges to the picture,” Mullen told reporters regarding the first meeting between the schools since 2011. “We’re going to have to come out and improve a great deal off of last week.” The Bulldogs spent last week running over Samford, after posting an impressive 20-19 victory at Notre Dame. Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm has passed for five touchdowns in three games since taking over for the injured Jacob Eason early in the season opener. “We have to get him to make good decisions,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart told reporters Tuesday in reference to Fromm. “As long as he does that, we can play winning football.”

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (3-0, 1-0 SEC): Fitzgerald, the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, finished with 260 yards of total offense against LSU and a pair of touchdowns passing and rushing. The Bulldogs are averaging 47.7 points per game, tops in the conference and ninth nationally, as Aeris Williams has put together back-to-back 100-plus yard rushing efforts. Defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, the league’s Defensive Lineman of the Week, set career highs in tackles (seven) and sacks (1.5) last week.

ABOUT GEORGIA (3-0, 0-0): Fromm passed for 165 yards and three touchdowns last week after completing 16-of-29 passes and engineering a late scoring drive to knock off Notre Dame. Running backs Nick Chubb (298 yards, four touchdowns) and Sony Michel (162, two) form a powerful backfield duo. Defensively, the Bulldogs have held opponents to 14.3 points and 266 yards of total offense per game.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Georgia OLB Lorenzo Carter has recorded three sacks and two forced fumbles while making two fumble recoveries this season.

                        2. Mississippi State has scored 35 or more points in eight of its last 10 games, dating back to last campaign.

                        3. Georgia has won 10 of its last 11 meetings with Mississippi State.

PREDICTION: Georgia 38, Mississippi State 34

Coming off a humbling loss to open SEC play, LSU aims to take out its anger on visiting Syracuse on Saturday. The Tigers were pounded by Mississippi State, 37-7 in Week 3, dropping them from the No. 11 team in the country all the way to 23rd nationally.

Obviously not much went right for LSU against Mississippi State, but coach Ed Orgeron was willing to shoulder the blame after his team lost to the Bulldogs for just the second time in the last 18 meetings. "I do believe this is going to be a turning point for us," Orgeron said. "It better be. I learned a lesson; we did not prepare as well as we should. We did not play well. It's my responsibility." The Tigers, who won their first two games by a combined 72-10 margin, will hope for a better performance against an Orange squad that they beat 34-24 two seasons ago. Leonard Fournette ran for 244 yards and two touchdowns in that game and Syracuse will have to be stouter against Fournette's backup that day, Derrius Guice, if the Orange have any shot at pulling the upset.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (2-1): The Orange's road debut will follow a crisp performance in last week's 41-17 triumph against Central Michigan in which the team ran for 300 yards as part of a 579-yard effort on offense. "Coach told us 'All gas, no brakes.' We put it on them," tailback Dontae Strickland said, one week after his squad's embarrassing home loss to Middle Tennessee. "It's an incredible comeback after last week. It's hard to do as a team after coming back from a loss. We kind of bounced back as a team." Eric Dungey threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a team-high 105 yards and an additional score last week and Strickland scored on the round for the third straight game.

ABOUT LSU (2-1): Guice, who had scored twice in each of the first two games, was held out of the end zone against Mississippi State but still averaged over five yards per carry on 15 attempts. Danny Etling completed a season-low 44.8 percent of his passes for a season-low 137 yards with a long of 19 yards on nearly 30 attempts. The Tigers have committed 30 penalties this season, prompting Orgeron to say this week: "We think we're more disciplined now than we've been in the past, but obviously the penalties are not showing it. It's an area that we need improvement, and I'm sure we're going to do it."

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. Syracuse WR Steve Ishmael leads the nation in catches (34) and has surpassed 100 receiving yards in all three games.

                            2. LSU has not lost a non-conference game at home since 2000, winning its last 48 such games.

                            3. The Tigers are one of three teams in the nation that have not committed a turnover in 2017.

                            PREDICTION: LSU 37, Syracuse 27

Scoring points won't be a problem when Arkansas State travels to SMU on Saturday night. The Red Wolves average 42 points while the host Mustangs average 49.3 points behind strong passing games.

Junior quarterback Justice Hansen, who ranks second nationally with 35 completions per game, has led the Red Wolves to back-to-back games with at least 490 total yards. SMU sophomore quarterback Ben Hicks has thrown for more than 300 yards in consecutive games and tallied eight touchdown passes. The Mustangs defense has recorded eight turnovers and is one of two FBS teams - along with Michigan - to record multiple defensive touchdowns and a safety this season. The Red Wolves have won 12 of their last 13 games against teams from Texas, including a 2007 win against SMU and a 2008 win against Texas A&M.

                                TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN3. LINE: SMU -5.5.

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE (1-1): Hansen (eight touchdown passes, two interceptions) is ranked sixth nationally with 375.5 passing yards after throwing for 2,719 yards and 19 scores last year. Seven different players have caught touchdowns, led by Christian Booker (11 catches, 148 yards, two TDs) and tight end Blake Mack (eight, 62, two). Senior defensive back Blaise Taylor (eight tackles, one INT) is ranked second nationally with a 33-yard average on punt returns with one return touchdown.

ABOUT SMU (2-1): Hicks has completed 48.4 percent of his passes for 729 yards and three interceptions. LSU transfer Trey Quinn (17 catches, 265 yards, two TDs) had a career game against TCU with seven receptions for 116 yards and a score, while Courtland Sutton (11 catches, 185 yards, five TDs, including four in Week 2) was held to one catch for no gain in the loss. Tyeson Neals and Kyran Mitchell each have three sacks as the Mustangs, while Jordan Wyatt has an interception and fumble returned for scores.

                                2. SMU is one of six schools with at least 10 red zone chances still perfect in the red zone (six TDs, four field goals).

                                3. Arkansas State senior DE Ja'Von Rolland-Jones (30.5) needs one sack to tie Larry English (Northern Illinois, 2005-08) and Jeremiah Attaochu (Georgia Tech, 2010-13) for the 19th-most career sacks in FBS history, a list topped by Terrell Suggs' 44 (Arizona State, 2000-02).
