The Texas Rangers attempt to end the season with a three-game winning streak as they host the Oakland Athletics on Sunday in their 2017 finale. Texas fell out of contention for a wild-card spot thanks to a seven-game slide but have posted back-to-back victories over Oakland, including Saturday's 8-4 triumph.

Rougned Odor went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Joey Gallo homered twice and drove in three runs as the Rangers improved to 41-39 at home and remained tied with Seattle for third place in the American League West - one game behind the Los Angeles Angels for second. The multi-homer performance was the fourth of the season for Gallo - the most by a Ranger since 2005, when Mark Teixeira recorded five and Alfonso Soriano notched four. Matt Joyce and Marcus Semien went deep as Oakland lost for the fourth time in six contests following a seven-game winning streak. Joyce, who has shattered his previous career high in homers with 25, is two RBIs away from reaching 70 for the second time in the majors.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (2-2, 3.75 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Cole Hamels (11-5, 4.10)

Mengden looks to end the season on a positive note after having his four-start unbeaten streak snapped by Seattle on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Texan yielded four runs on five hits and three walks over six innings after producing a pair of scoreless outings, including his first career shutout on Sept. 15 at Philadelphia. Mengden made two starts against Texas in 2016 - his first season in the majors - and went 0-1 while allowing six runs (five earned) over 11 frames.

Hamels lost for the fourth time in seven starts on Tuesday, when he was tagged by Houston for six runs on six hits and four walks over a season-low three innings. It marked the third time in six September outings the 33-year-old Californian, who allowed a total of six runs in his previous three turns, has given up four or more runs. Hamels fell to 2-2 with a 4.03 ERA in six career starts against the Athletics on Aug. 26 after surrendering six runs on nine hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Gallo (41) is the sixth player in Rangers history to hit 40 homers in a season and first since Josh Hamilton belted 43 in 2010.

    2. Oakland OF Khris Davis needs one blast to set a new career high of 43.

    3. Texas LHP Alex Claudio, who has recorded 11 saves, could finish with the team's lowest leading total since Greg Harris also notched 11 in 1985.

    PREDICTION: Rangers 7, Athletics 3

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (74-87) at Washington Nationals (97-64)
        DATE/TIME: Sunday, October 01 - 3:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia

        Preview: Pirates at Nationals

        Gracenote
        Oct 1, 2017

The Washington Nationals hope to get through the final game of the regular season without another injury and match their franchise record for wins when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Washington gave up four runs in the ninth inning for a 4-1 loss on Saturday to remain one victory behind the 2012 team (98) and, more importantly, National League Cy Young Award candidate Max Scherzer left the game with a right hamstring cramp.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker told reporters after the contest that Scherzer was taken out as a precaution: “He didn’t want to come out. We thought it was best. Max never wants to come out.” Washington’s other major injury concern is 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper, who is just 1-for-14 with six strikeouts in four games since returning from a knee injury that kept him out more than six weeks and may need a few more at-bats Sunday. Gio Gonzalez is slated to get the start in the finale for the Nationals as he is 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA in eight career turns against Pittsburgh, which has won five of its last seven contests. Andrew McCutchen was a late scratch from Saturday’s lineup for the Pirates due to foot discomfort and is uncertain for Sunday.

        TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Steven Brault (1-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (15-8, 2.75)

Brault makes his fourth major-league start this season after allowing just five earned runs in 16 innings over the first three. The 25-year-old Californian also has made seven relief appearances with the Pirates in 2017, including one on Tuesday in which he gave up two hits over three scoreless frames versus Baltimore to record the save. Brault, who is 1-3 with a 3.78 ERA in 10 career major-league starts, will be facing Washington for the first time.

Gonzalez attempts to reach 16 wins for the first time since collecting 21 in 2012 and needs 3 1/3 innings to log 200 for the first time since 2011 with Oakland. The 32-year-old Floridian lost three of his last five starts after permitting three runs across five innings in a 4-1 setback against Philadelphia on Tuesday. David Freese is just 1-for-9 versus Gonzalez, who owns a 2.28 ERA at home this year.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Pittsburgh 1B Josh Bell was hitless Saturday and remains tied with Jason Bay (2004) for the club’s rookie home-run record at 26.

        2. Washington INF Stephen Drew, out since July 25 with abdominal injury, was activated Saturday and is eligible for the playoffs.

        3. Pirates OF Starling Marte’s run of five straight contests with two hits ended Saturday, but he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

        PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Pirates 2

GAME: San Diego Padres (71-90) at San Francisco Giants (63-98)
            DATE/TIME: Sunday, October 01 - 3:05 PM EST

            Preview: Padres at Giants

            Gracenote
            Sep 30, 2017

One day after San Francisco Giants veteran Matt Cain bid a fond farewell to the game, his teammates are set to conclude one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history. The Giants have lost 98 games heading into Sunday’s season finale against the visiting San Diego Padres, who have won 12 of the first 18 meetings between the teams this year.

Cain tossed five shutout innings in the final start of his 13-year career Saturday but San Diego scored two runs in the ninth off Giants closer Sam Dyson and escaped with a 3-2 victory. Dyson has been a pleasant surprise since being acquired from Texas in June but figures to return next season to his role as a setup man for closer Mark Melancon, who had pronator release surgery on his right pitching arm earlier this month and plans on being ready for spring training. The Giants have struggled all season against the Padres and first baseman Wil Myers, who has hit six of his career-high 30 home runs at AT&T Park. A major part of the team’s rebuilding effort, Myers is the first Padre with 30-or-more homers in a season since Chase Headley hit 31 in 2012.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Luis Perdomo (8-11, 4.65 ERA) vs. Giants RH Johnny Cueto (8-8, 4.43)

Perdomo is looking to finish the season on a high note after giving up four runs over five innings in an 8-4 loss to Colorado last Sunday. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic has struggled with his control this season with 64 walks in 156 2/3 innings. Joe Panik has eight hits in 16 at-bats against Perdomo, who is 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA in eight career games (six starts) against San Francisco.

The New York Yankees play their final tune-up before Tuesday's wild-card game when they wrap up the regular season against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. With wins in 16 of their last 21 games, the Yankees kept the heat on Boston in the American League East before the Red Sox finally clinched Saturday.

That leaves New York with a wild-card matchup against Minnesota on Tuesday night at home, with the winner taking on Cleveland in the AL Division Series. The Yankees hope that slugger Aaron Judge stays hot into October after he finished a 15-homer month with a solo blast in Saturday's 2-1 victory. His 52nd home run tied him with Mickey Mantle (1956) for the eighth-most in franchise history for a single season and gave him at least one RBI in seven straight games. With the game now meaningless in the standings, New York will give the ball to rookie Jordan Montgomery as he aims to become a 10-game winner, while Toronto turns to veteran Brett Anderson.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Brett Anderson (4-4, 6.97 ERA) vs. Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (9-7, 3.96)

Anderson picked up his second win in a Toronto uniform with five innings of three-run ball at Fenway Park on Monday, rebounding from a dismal showing against Kansas City five days earlier. He has eight strikeouts and nine walks over his last three starts after fanning 11 and walking none in his first three outings with the Blue Jays. The 29-year-old was pounded for five runs in one-third of an inning against the Yankees earlier this year while still a member of the Cubs and he is a woeful 0-5 with a 7.92 ERA in his career versus New York.

Montgomery has allowed one run in 12 innings over his last two starts - both at home - to improve to 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA in the Bronx. The rookie's lone matchup with the Blue Jays resulted in six scoreless frames at Toronto on June 3. Montgomery, who is vying for a spot on the postseason roster, has gone six straight starts at Yankee Stadium without allowing a home run.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Yankees RHP Luis Severino will start the wild-card game against Twins RHP Ervin Santana.

                2. Toronto RF Jose Bautista, who is expected to play his final game with the Blue Jays, is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in the series.

                3. New York LHP Aroldis Chapman retired 36-of-41 batters in September.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4

Asdrubal Cabrera's three-run homer in the 11th inning was the difference in the 7-4 win and it capped a four-hit effort for the veteran infielder, who is hitting .371 in September. Maikel Franco homered for the third time in his last four games and Rhys Hoskins - along with Franco one of many promising young bats Philadelphia will continue to build around - drove in his 48th run in his 49th game as the Phillies fell to 18-38 against New York since the start of 2015. Noah Syndergaard will make his second start since returning from the disabled list for the Mets but is expected to be limited to a pitch count of around 25 pitches.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (1-2, 3.18 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (7-10, 6.26)

A notable moment in New York's spiral this season came when Syndergaard was rocked for five runs in 1 1/3 innings of a 23-5 loss at Washington on April 30 before the big righty was shelved with a tear in his lat muscle. He fought his way back to make a one-inning start Sept. 23 - also against the Nationals - and yielded a single in a scoreless frame that required only five pitches. Syndergaard's last full start was against Philadelphia on April 20, when he struck out 10 and allowed three earned runs in seven innings, which left the 25-year-old at 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in his career versus the Phillies.

Pivetta has won two straight starts while yielding two runs and nine hits with 12 strikeouts in 12 innings. He had perhaps his best start of the year at New York on July 2, allowing a run and one hit over seven innings to get the win, but was reached for 12 runs in 9 2/3 innings over the next two meetings with the Mets. The Canada native is 3-3 with a 5.80 ERA, but has 69 strikeouts in 59 innings at home.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Philadelphia is 15-11 on Sundays, compared to 50-85 on all other days.

                    2. Phillies C Jorge Alfaro has four doubles and a home run during a five-game hitting streak.

                    3. Mets OF Norichika Aoki has seven walks and zero strikeouts over his last five games.

                    PREDICTION: Phillies 6, Mets 5

The Seattle Mariners look to wrap up the season with a second straight series win when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday for the rubber match of their three-game set. Seattle, which began its season-ending road trip by taking two of three in Oakland, used a five-run eighth inning to post a 6-4 triumph on Saturday and even the series.

Mitch Haniger registered his fourth multi-hit performance in six games - going 5-for-5 with three doubles - while Kyle Seager and Yonder Alonso hit back-to-back homers during the eighth-inning uprising, with the former's being a three-run shot. Jacob Hannemann added his first career shot as Seattle remained tied with Texas for third place in the American League West. The Angels sit just one game ahead of the Mariners and Rangers after losing for the 10th time in 13 contests. Albert Pujols registered his 1,918th career RBI in Saturday's setback, moving him past Eddie Murray for eighth place on the all-time list - according to when RBIs became an official stat in 1920.

TV: 3:07 p.m. ET, TBS, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (12-5, 3.12 ERA) vs. Angels RH Parker Bridwell (9-3, 3.87)

Paxton is 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA in three starts since returning from a pectoral injury that cost him more than a month but has not allowed more than three earned runs since surrendering seven on June 16 at Texas. The 28-year-old Canadian worked 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Oakland on Tuesday after totaling five frames in his first two turns following the absence. Paxton is 4-2 with a 2.26 ERA in 10 career starts against the Angels, including a 1-0 record and 2.50 ERA in three outings this season.

Bridwell is coming off a road victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in which he allowed three runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old Texan has served up four homers and recorded only two strikeouts in 12 frames over his last two outings after keeping the ball in the park and fanning seven across six innings against Texas on Sept. 16. Bridwell is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in three starts against Seattle this season - his first in the majors, including a home loss on June 30 in which he was tagged for five runs and 11 hits over six frames.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Mariners DH Nelson Cruz needs one blast to reach the 40-homer plateau for the fourth straight season.

                        2. The Angels will finish with a losing record for a second consecutive season for the first time since a three-year run from 1992-94.

                        3. Seattle's Jean Segura (.300 batting average), who sat out Saturday's game, likely will do so again for the finale and join Felix Fermin (1994) and Alex Rodriguez (1996-98, 2000) as the only shortstops in franchise history to hit .300 or better.

                        PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Angels 3

Giancarlo Stanton enters the final game of the season Sunday looking for his 60th homer as the Miami Marlins host the Atlanta Braves, one day after one of his teammates reached a pair of milestones in a 10-2 victory. Second baseman Dee Gordon swiped a pair of bases, giving him 60 on the year and the major-league lead entering the final day of the campaign, and had three hits to reach 200 for the second time in three seasons.

While the milestones are nice for Gordon - he is five shy of his career high of 205 set in 2015 - the focus remains on Stanton, as the right-fielder is one longball short of becoming the sixth player with a 60-homer season in major-league history. Atlanta’s setback Saturday clinched its third consecutive 90-loss season and extended its losing streak to six games, further raising speculation manager Brian Snitker may not have his option picked up for 2018. Outfielder Lane Adams and second baseman Ozzie Albies each extended their hitting streaks to five games for the Braves on Saturday. Miami has won three in a row and eight of its past 12 games, but will finish under .500 for the eighth consecutive season.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Max Fried (1-1, 3.74 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (14-7, 3.77)

Fried makes his fourth start and ninth appearance of his rookie season, looking to build off a strong outing Monday despite taking a loss to the New York Mets. The 23-year-old gave up one earned run across 5 1/3 innings in that defeat, the second time in three starts he has given up just one earned run. Fried, who has posted a 3.21 ERA in his three starts, gave up three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Marlins on Sept. 9.

Urena established himself as a key part of Miami’s rotation in his third major-league season, and makes his 28th start of 2017 after going 7-3 with a 3.58 ERA in his past 13 appearances. The 26-year-old struggled in his last appearance, giving up six runs on nine hits over five innings Tuesday in a loss at Colorado. Urena has pitched well against the Braves this season, going 2-1 in four starts with a 2.22 ERA.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Braves CF Ender Inciarte, who leads the majors with 662 at-bats this season, did not start for the second consecutive game Saturday with a sore left thumb.

                            2. Stanton has 131 RBIs on the season - a franchise record - while OF Marcell Ozuna’s 122 RBIs rank second in team history.

                            3. Atlanta has won the final game of the regular season each of the past five years.

                            PREDICTION: Marlins 5, Braves 1

The Tampa Bay Rays hope to finish the season with four straight wins as they go for a three-game sweep of the slumping Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. The Rays routed the Orioles in the opener before holding on for a 4-3 victory on Saturday as closer Alex Colome pushed his major league-leading total to 47 saves, leaving him one shy of matching the franchise record set in 2012 by Fernando Rodney.

Logan Morrison recorded a single for Tampa Bay in the victory and remains at 38 homers - the third-most in franchise history behind Carlos Pena, who is second at 29 and also owns the club record of 46 - which he set in 2007. Blake Snell looks to end his season on a high note when he takes the mound for the Rays (79-82) against Baltimore’s Kevin Gausman, who has registered 17 strikeouts in 13 scoreless innings during two victories over Tampa Bay this season. The Orioles (75-86) continue to struggle down the stretch with four straight losses and a 4-18 record since being three games over .500 and in the middle of the American League wild-card race on Sept. 5. J.J. Hardy, who could play his final game in a Baltimore uniform on Sunday, has recorded three multi-hit performances in eight contests since coming off the disabled list.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (11-11, 4.81 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (4-7, 4.27)

Gausman has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last six starts but is just 2-2 during that stretch after giving up six over four innings at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The 26-year-old LSU product is 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA since the All-Star Game as opposed to 5-7 with a 5.85 mark before the break. Trevor Plouffe is 4-for-9 with a homer versus Gausman, who is 5-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 13 career appearances (11 starts) against the Rays.

Snell struggled against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, when he permitted four runs on four hits and four walks without recording an out in the second inning. The 24-year-old Seattle native had posted five quality starts in his previous eight outings, going 4-0 in that span. Adam Jones could miss Sunday with a leg injury but is 3-for-5 with a homer against Snell, who is 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA in two career starts versus Baltimore.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                1. Baltimore DH Pedro Alvarez, who spent most of the season in the minors, is 9-for-23 with four RBIs over his last seven games.

                                2. Tampa Bay SS Adeiny Hechavarria is 6-for-12 at the plate in his last three games and has not committed an error since July 30.

                                3. Orioles rookie 1B-OF Trey Mancini went 0-for-2 with two walks on Saturday, putting an end to his 17-game hitting streak.

                                PREDICTION: Orioles 4, Rays 2
