    Preview: Capitals at Lightning

    Gracenote
    Oct 9, 2017

Captain Alex Ovechkin has produced an emphatic answer to his lowest-scoring full season since 2010-11 and hopes to continue his offensive surge when the Washington Capitals visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. Ovechkin followed up a hat trick in the season opener with four more goals in a 6-1 victory over Montreal on Saturday and has netted 41 tallies in 63 career games against Tampa Bay.

“I think the biggest thing is, Alex is skating and he’s getting to those pucks, and his shot is undeniable,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz told reporters of Ovechkin, who scored 33 goals in 2016-17. “When he’s moving his feet, you just need that space.” Ovechkin may be able to add to his total against the Lightning, who have given up eight goals in their first two contests - both against Florida. Brayden Point is off to a fast start for Tampa Bay after a strong finish to the 2016-17 season with five points, while captain Steven Stamkos has contributed three assists in his return from knee surgery. The Lightning’s best player in the first two games has been Andrei Vasilevskiy, who turned aside 76 of the 84 shots he faced and gave his struggling team a chance to win both contests.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (2-0-0): Evgeny Kuznetsov has been a help and a beneficiary of Ovechkin’s scoring barrage with seven assists in the first two contests while fellow linemate Jakub Vrana has set up three tallies. Washington recorded just one of its 10 goals on the power play but has been perfect on the penalty kill, keeping opponents scoreless on nine attempts with the man advantage. Nathan Walker, who was born in Wales but grew up in Australia, scored a goal and received 11 minutes, 23 minutes of ice time in his NHL debut on Saturday as he became the first Australian ever to play in the league.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (1-1-0): The line of Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov has combined for nine points in the first two games while Point and Ondrej Palat have teamed with Yanni Gourde to produce the same amount. Rookie defenseman Mikhail Sergachev has made an impression in his first two games by registering five shots while playing with the veteran Anton Stralman, who has posted a plus-3 rating in the early going. The Lightning had 13 giveaways in Saturday’s 5-4 loss at Florida, and Norris Trophy finalist Victor Hedman was credited with four of them.

    OVERTIME

    1. The Capitals have earned at least a point in eight straight games (7-0-1) against the Lightning, outscoring them 10-4 last season.

    2. Point has registered seven goals and five assists in his last seven NHL contests dating back to last season.

    3. Washington RW Thomas Wilson will serve the third contest of his four-game suspension for an illegal hit.

    PREDICTION: Capitals 5, Lightning 3

        Preview: Jets at Oilers

        Gracenote
        Oct 8, 2017

The Edmonton Oilers host the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, looking to put a less-than-stellar showing in Saturday’s loss at Vancouver behind them and return to the form shown in a season-opening victory over Calgary. Everything that went right for the Oilers in that victory over the Flames went wrong in the 3-2 loss to the Canucks, from Connor McDavid being held off the scoresheet to goaltender Cam Talbot being chased after allowing three goals on seven shots.

“At the end of the day, our power play hasn’t been good enough,” Edmonton forward Milan Lucic told reporters, citing the team’s 1-for-5 performance with a man advantage that coach Todd McLellan described to the media as, “abysmal.” The same adjective can be used to describe a Winnipeg defense that has surrendered a staggering 13 goals through two games, including five unanswered by Calgary in a 6-3 defeat on Saturday. Center Mark Scheifele scored for the second consecutive game, but new Jets goaltender Steve Mason allowed six goals on 45 shots after surrendering five on 20 shots in a season-opening 7-2 defeat to Toronto. “You want to play well in front of a new guy, you want to let him get comfortable,” center Adam Lowry told reporters afterward. “We haven’t done that in the first two games.”

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), Sportsnet Oilers (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE JETS (0-2-0): After trailing 5-0 in the opener against Toronto the Jets started quickly Saturday, getting goals from Brandon Tanev, Scheifele and Patrik Laine to lead 3-1 after the first period. Winnipeg lost control by allowing four goals in a 9-minute, 56-second span of the middle period, including a power-play marker as the Jets are just 6-for-10 on the penalty kill through two games. Jets head coach Paul Maurice confirmed to reporters Sunday that Connor Hellebuyck, who played the third period in the Toronto loss, will start Monday.

ABOUT THE OILERS (1-1-0): McDavid - who opened his season with a hat trick - was held pointless Saturday, snapping a 15-game regular-season point streak dating to March 14. Talbot, who was outstanding in recording his 19th career shutout in the season opener, was yanked 32 seconds into the second period after allowing his third goal. Edmonton is 1-for-7 on the power play through two games and spent 19 minutes on the penalty kill Saturday, successfully killing six of seven Vancouver man-advantages.

        OVERTIME

        1. Winnipeg did not have a player with a plus/minus rating greater than zero on Saturday.

        2. McDavid has failed to score a goal against only seven teams in 129 career games, including the Jets, but has five assists in five career contests versus Winnipeg.

        3. Edmonton swept the three matchups with the Jets a season ago, outscoring Winnipeg 12-5 as Talbot earned all three victories in goal.

        PREDICTION: Edmonton 5, Winnipeg 2

            Preview: Flames at Ducks

            Gracenote
            Oct 9, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks continue their season-opening four-game homestand when they face off against the Calgary Flames on Monday. Anaheim began the campaign by edging Arizona 5-4 on Thursday before dropping a 3-2 overtime decision against Philadelphia two nights later.

The Ducks have earned at least one point in each of their first two games for just the fourth time in franchise history despite being without a number of key players, including Ryan Kesler (hip), Patrick Eaves (lower body) and captain Ryan Getzlaf (lower body). Calgary bounced back from a season-opening shutout loss in Edmonton to roll past Winnipeg 6-3 on Saturday in its first game at home. Defenseman T.J. Brodie and Johnny Gaudreau each registered a four-point performance, with the former recording two goals - including one on the power play - and the latter tallying once. Gaudreau's goal was the game-winner, putting him two away from matching his total from last season.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Flames (Calgary), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (1-1-0): Calgary continues to await the debut of Jaromir Jagr, who signed a one-year, $1 million contract (plus performance bonuses), on Wednesday. The 45-year-old future Hall-of-Famer, who ranks second on the all-time scoring list with 1,914 points, has participated in only a handful of practices after not being on the ice since April 9 with Florida. Brodie is one-third of the way toward matching the total of six goals he recorded both last season and in 2015-16.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (1-0-1): Antoine Vermette registered his 500th career point in the overtime loss to the Flyers by scoring his first goal of the season. The 35-year-old center is expected to reach another milestone soon, as he is 16 away from 1,000 career games. Defenseman Cam Fowler recorded his fourth career short-handed goal on Saturday and first since Dec. 9, 2013 against the New York Islanders.

            OVERTIME

            1. The Ducks also have been without Ds Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen, who both are recovering from shoulder surgery, while LW Nick Ritchie (lower body) sat out Saturday's contest.

            2. Calgary RW Kris Versteeg's next point on the power play will be the 100th of his career.

            3. Anaheim concludes its homestand Wednesday against the Islanders but returns to Honda Center for two more contests after visiting Colorado on Friday.

              Now about this complimentary winner

For my free play today, going to have to side with the Chicago Cubs over Washington Nationals, and I want you listing the scheduled starters. I really don't see why Max Scherzer is laying money to Jose Quintana, as the value is certainly with Chicago in this situation.

The teams split the first two in D.C., and Washington won the regular-season series, but this is the playoffs and these are the defending World Series champions.

Chicago is 3-0 in Quintana's last three starts, while the Nats are 2-1 the last three times Quintana toed the slab. For the season, Quintana is 7-3 since arriving in mid-July, from the Chicago White Sox, while the Cubs are 10-4 when he is on the hill.

And I'm not sold on Scherzer's health, as he left his last outing with a right hamstring cramp. So even though he is expected to start in Game 3 of NLDS, let's not be so sure his foundation is right for this one.

              5* CUBS (Quintana over Scherzer)

                  Chris Jordan

My free play is on the Arizona Diamondbacks, againt the Los Angeles Dodgers, and I want you listing both scheduled starting pitchers: Yu Darvish and Zack Greinke.

It's do or die, tonight. There is no other important game for the Snakes, and they have their No. 1 guy on the hill.

Greinke takes the hill to face his former club after lasting just 3.2 innings against the Colorado Rockies in last Wednesday's NL Wild Card Game on Wednesday. The right-hander yielded four runs on six hits and a walk, and will have to do much better.

I think he will. He's been the go-to guy for the Diamondbacks all year long, as they've built around him. This is a guys who loves challenges, and will rise to the occasion for Arizona.

Darvish, meanwhile, was obtained to be the No. 2 starter, but the Dodgers stuck with Rich Hill there, and had him pitch at home. Darvish was 6-4 on the road and tonight will be his first game in two weeks. The Diamondbacks have belted six home runs in the series, and remember Darvish was knocked around for five runs on four homers in five innings of a 5-3 loss to the Blue Jays in the second game of the ALDS last year.

I like Arizona in this one.

                  1* DIAMONDBACKS (Greinke over Darvish)
